I think this team may be a little light at OLB and CB

but i figured Stewert and Brown would fill in if they had to.

I think most would agree that Preston beats out Proctor,

even though we haven’t even seen Preston.

I’m thinking Octavien has a better chance than Stewart, but I didn’t notice Octavien as much against the 49er’s.

And I don’t think there is any way Courtney Brown survives the cut after last night. Giving up that TD drive wasn’t all his fault, but he’s been really struggling and that was a boneheaded penalty. I actually think Mickens makes the team because of his potential.

Maybe they cut Stanback and go longer at LB, or keep one of the younger guards, Gibbons or Bright?

1) Brown is going to get cut, he’s done after that game.
2) Proctor is showing no improvement, making mental mistakes and just stupid plays. Dukey will probably replace him
3) Stanback isn’t a certainty, he may be the fifth WR, there was another guy that the Cowboys liked that could replace Stanback, his injuries don’t help his chances. Then again, the Cowboys may take 6 WR’s, not unusual.

Octavien makes it

and it might be at the expense of Stanback. “You can never have too many LBs” but 5 WRs will do…and Octavien will be more valuable to special teams.

Trades

The other item not yet accounted for is trades. I would expect the Cowboys to look to make a trade this week for a position or two (LB, NT, OL). If they do it will be interesting to see if any players are traded away or just future draftpicks. I’d like to see Stanback traded so that we can get something for the 4 years invested and 4th round pick expended. Other trade candidates, and perhaps even more likely than Stanback, may be Lattimore or Crosslin. They’ve both looked good enough to warrant interest from other teams. Some may argue that a team need not trade for them since they’ll be on the open market shortly. However, if a team has particular depth at an area we have weakness but has weakness where we have depth, they can do a trade and not have to out bid, out persuade other teams for the services of the player they are interested in. I think those 2 players have shown enough that multiple teams will be interested in them, and therefore a trade might be plausible without hurting our 53 man roster.

so no one thinks Bheuler will be cut

i tend to agree since there seems to be lots of emphasis on special teams this year

by Becho on Aug 30, 2009 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

Absolutely not

I don’t see Dallas trading a draft pick who has done exactly what he was drafted to do

You're in for disappointment

He’s too athletic and contributes on special teams.

We kept 6 WRs last year and many teams keep 7.

Buehler has had more praise than bad talk, so I don’t think he’ll be cut.

Stanback has to be special in whatever playing time and training time he’s got to get on this roster.

by Why on Aug 30, 2009 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

Brown will not be on the team

Watkins will be though. I think 4 CBs is light and I think Wade will think the same way. 5 CBs, 5 WRs.

by Key19 on Aug 30, 2009 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

Oh and

I almost forgot Octavien. I think he makes it. Another reason we can only have 5 WRs. I know that puts my list at 54, but I don’t know who they’ll cut to make room for Octavien. I just think they’ll definitely have him on the team.

by Key19 on Aug 30, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Scratch/Add

Scratch : Procter, C.Brown, Stanback

Add Octavien, and/or possible FA pickup to LB

Add someone (maybe a FA) to CB

Training Camp '09 = Mega Thunder Dome....80 men enter, 53 men leave.

Is there any chance both McQ and Proctor are cut?

I assume Preston makes it, how about any of the other 2nd or 3rd teamers?

by StillHateTheGiants on Aug 30, 2009 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

I think they keep Stanback if they can't trade him

too much potential and not enough tape to really know whether he’s worth keeping around, since he’s been injured so often. They’ve invested too much time in him up to this point and there is really nobody who you can really say they would rather have on the team than him who is currently on the roster. This is his last year though if he doesn’t step up or if he gets injured again.

I agree with the rest of your list except that C. Brown and Procter are both gone.
Watkins makes it, but only buys himself one more year as well, and I also think they keep Octavien over Stewart.

by Waterloo Joe on Aug 31, 2009 9:28 AM CDT reply actions

I agree

I don’t think the Cowboys are quite yet ready to give up on Stanback. I think they are fascinated by his off the charts athleticism.

In Romo we Trust

Ya, kind of like Antonio Bryant right!

He will always be a head case, and Stanback will always be fragile.
