Flo,  Flo, Flo

I think I'm going to start keeping track...here we go.

Yesterday Flozell Adams had one penalty for 15 yards.  But, actually, As I pointed out last year, many penalties cost more than their allotment of yards, and Flo seems to have a knack for this.  His play negated a 16 yard play.  That means that Flo cost the Cowboys 31 yards, at what was still a bit of a critical point in the game.  31 yards.  That's a lot folks.

Combined, Choice and Felix had 32 yards of rushing.  So basically, Flozell Adams negated two backs worth of production, not to mention the killing of momentum after picking up a nice 1st down inside enemy territory.

I had to post on this, because of all the things in this game that were less than stellar, this is the one that had me swearing at my computer screen.  This is a leftover problem that hasn't been fixed in six years.

At what point are we gonna start yelling to get this guy outta here?  That may sound extreme, but think about this.  If we've got third and 10 at the NYG 40 yard line next week and we have a nice 16 yard throw and catch, but Flo has a penalty, then what.  When we are backed up to our own side of the field, rather than well within field goal range against a good team, 31 yards becomes a lot.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

I'm in the minority

I really want to find a replacement for Flo. I can’t stand his penalizing.

gotta give your comment a rec

He absolutely engulfs Trent Cole. Cole isn’t anything spectacular, but he has a high motor and flow doesn’t even let him have any cleanup.

Who else can block Osi one on one all game? Nobody, that’s who.

Give him a cochlear implant, but do not get rid of Flo.

Hey, no false starts this game!

I didn’t see the incident and neither did any of the other folks in my section. Flo just took out a little aggression on TB. I can live with that as football is an emotional game. Mr. Wilson is correct. Find a suitable replacement before you throw him under the bus (make sure it’s a Greyhound, since he’s kinda big)

Stop hating on Flo for crying out loud

He kept a very good Gaines Adams off of Romo’s blindside all game long so I’ll take that penalty every game in exchange for keeping Romo upright.

Flo is one of the best LTs in the game and you nitpick about one freaking penalty, unfreakin believable.

Flo is one of the best Deke, just face facts

How many times was Romo sacked yesterday by Adams?? That’s right, none. I’m also not too concerned with Osi next week either because of Flo.

When healthy, Flo is one of the best and that’s a fact.

With that kind of logic

then don’t expect the cowboys winning anytime soon. As I told you many times, penalties, turnovers and poor decisions by the quarterback will give you just what you’ve seen the last three years, either no playoffs, of one and done..and alot of empty numbers

by Deke on Sep 14, 2009 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt it

Believe it or not Deke, good teams, playoff teams and even SB tams commit penalties, the players are human and will make mistakes, just part of the game.

But how often?

That’s the problem with this team, too many mistakes are excused as things that Super Bowl teams have also done on occasion. Well, this team is not a Super Bowl team yet, and as long as they consistently make mistakes and just accept them, they never will be. That’s why fans get so frustrated with Romo and Wade’s attitude about things.

I don't think 4 penalties is a lot for one game

and neither is one false start or penalty per game on Flo as well. Actually, he didn’t have one false start yesterday which was awesome.

by Terry on Sep 14, 2009 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

16 False starts on one guy is a LOT.

But yesterday was a good job by them. I hope that becomes their norm rather than an aberration like it is now.

Still, 16 procedural penalties on one player is a ton, and as a team, we just have WAY too many. In fact, almost half of their penalties last year were from lining up wrong or starting too early:

29 – False Start
15 – Defensive Offsides
5 – Delay of the Game
3 – Illegal Formation
3 – Encroachment
2 – 12 men on Defense
1 – Neutral Zone Infraction
1 – Illegal Motion

If they cut those in half, they are 16th in the league instead of 1st. Cut holding in half too (16), and they are 19th in the league.

While I agree with you Terry

about FLo being a quality LT, his deafness is not an excuse, its a weakness. Your argument is like praising Brad Johnson for throwing the ball a long way for someone with a weak arm. It doesnt make sense.

it is what it is

It’s not going to improve that much so it’s something the team and fans have to live with.

Flo is by far our best LT on the team and Free isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Adams so you have to accept his occasional false starts until we can acquire another LT or Free gets considerably better.

Is everything now "hating"?

Calling out a player for a dumb penalty necessitates a shot at the poster.

That is really going to serve this site well.

No he didn't

Just for clarity's sake

the end of that quote is “at what point are we going to start yelling to get this guy outta here?” That sounds an awful lot like asking for the guy to be benched. And clearly Terry isn’t the only one that interpreted his comments as such based off of other responses.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

this sums it up perfectly

The guy kills drive with penalties, but he also makes sure that opposing Defensive Ends don’t kill the quarterback

I really like Flo, but...

I think it is either time to move on, or get a new tackle and consider moving Flo inside to LG if he would be comfortable with that. I can’t help but think his hearing problem attributes to, at the very least, his false start problems. And being that he is starting to lose his speed at his old age, he could dominate at guard for at least 3 or so more seasons.

But yeah, if Flo continues to do stuff like he did yesterday, we need to get a replacement.

by Zach22 on Sep 14, 2009 9:33 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Zach, from what I've heard over the years, you're right on on the hearing thing

He’s legally deaf in one ear, and he has trouble hearing the snap count. That’s the explanation for the false starts that I’ve heard cited most frequently.

Why do you say he’s starting to lose his speed? I thought he looked very good yesterday.

Gotta dump Flozell Adams!

He’s an 11 year Veteran and he can’t focus enough to avoid drive killing penalties? He has to go. This team has to get smarter and mentally tougher. Replacing Flozell Adams would be a good step in that direction. That isn’t hating, that is facting. He is the most penalized player in the League over the past 2 seasons. Not hating, just facting.

by HutHut on Sep 14, 2009 9:46 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

replace him with who?? Free??

Free would get abused by the elite pass rushers in this league. Romo would never had the day he had yesterday with Free at LT, thats for damn sure.

by Terry on Sep 14, 2009 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate Flozell's penalties a lot

but you are delusional if you think simply replacing him with Free will make this team better. Free could be good, but he is very unproven and has no continuity with the offensive line. Plus, I think we can all agree that just throwing Free in after one week of the season would not be great for his development since he would have almost no time to adjust to the other four guys and would be facing one of the best pass rushers in the game. I am wiling to commit to Free down the road, but only after he gets a preseason to prepare to be a starter.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Not sure why this is a surprise to people

Flozell Adams is not a 24 year old tackle. He is a veteran with a huge track record to evaluate him on. Did you expect his penalties to suddenly drop this year?

As others on these boards have said, penalties are part of his DNA. They’re going to happen. Just like Andre Gurode is going to mishandle some snaps this year for us, Tank Johnson is going to take some plays off in Cincy, Terrell Owens is probably going to drop some important passes in Buffalo, etc. I understand expecting rookies or younger players to change their habits significantly from year to year, but with 10 year veterans, it seems like unrealistic thinking.

Of course, the reason that Flozell is still a starting LT and paid the huge salary that he is is that even with his penalties included in the equation, he is still an excellent player, and in general the thinking is that we net more with having him on the field than not.

So if Doug Free evolves into a top flight tackle who also doesn’t commit penalties, then sure, plug him in there. That’d be great. But at the moment, a healthy Flozell is our best option at LT by a significant margin, even with the penalty yardage included, and I expect that to be the case for at least the remainder of this season.

The penalties are part of who he is as a player— we don’t have to be ecstatic about it, but to continue complaining or hoping him to change seems silly. And to suggest getting him out of here when he is by far our best LT option doesn’t make sense to me.

by Tim Wilson on Sep 14, 2009 9:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Have to agree with Tim

As frustrating as the penalties are, Flo is capable of being a dominant LT if he can stay healthy.

I’d still like Free to get another season in as apprentice LT. Also hope the Cowboys can pluck a talented OT prospect out of next years draft.

So it begins...

by APerfectStar on Sep 14, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not there yet...

He is getting older and more likely to drop in productivity before too long. He is going to be more likely to suffer injuries. However they are very, very hard to replace and he is still very productive. He will drive us crazy with false start penalties. That being said…

I will take that penalty, even when it came! It wasn’t a false start, it was for unsportsmanlike conduct. No, they never showed it so It may have been something stupid…but if your LT is going to be penalized, don’t you want some nasty, set the tone type?

by shaneshot on Sep 14, 2009 12:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

options

I don’t think we have a better option. He is an elite player still. Cane we get a olinemen equal to or better or even a small downgrade? I don’t see any.

So what are you going to do? He is good and you must take the dumb plays in there.

by bad knees on Sep 14, 2009 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the concern

and I hate it too. But Flo is just too valuable….would you trade a penalty a game for two more pressures on Romo? I don’t think thats a good idea. Flo is one of the top 10 pass blocking LTs in the game.

Now, one guy I would like to see replaced or moved over is Gurode. A center who can’t snap consistently and is imo a pretty overrated run blocker should not be a surefire starter.

by foyesboys on Sep 14, 2009 5:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Flo is good, not great

He has a knack for stepping it up in contract years, look it up.

His penalties are infuriating, and the OP is right, a LOT of them seem to negate a big play which totally kills our momentum.

That being said, Free is not better than Flo, and neither is any FA or anybody we can trade for, so hopefully Jerry and Stephen address it in the 1st or 2nd round next year.

by ChrisRichey on Sep 14, 2009 11:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

This post and most of the comments extremely short sighted.

Fans are frustrated by his false starts and they have killed a few drives but 10+ yard penaltys are the true drive killers. Still, a sack is a much bigger drive killer than a false start.

What is frustrating is someone writing a post about a penalty and not even knowing what the penalty was called for. Then ganging up about something that didnt happen.

I went back and saw the penalty. Its hard to see but if you freeze it and then go frame by frame you can see it. It was a reverse and Flo released off the line in what look like a guy looking to cut off the LBs. There was a safety who saw his big ass and rolled away from him. What look like the CB coming from across the field to pursue Crayton was seen by Flo and he step up to cut him off. The CB saw him and gave him a little shake and tried to cut back inside of him. Flo appeared to try to stick a palm out and strike him in the chest or shoulder pad. Unfortunately for Flo is he is 6’7" and the CB was 5’10" and ducking a little and Flo caught his head right smack in front of the Ref. It look like more of an accident than a bone headed play. He was hustling and caught a bad break in the wrong place.

If Im not mistaken then we signed him to an extension before the draft of Felix.

Had we not signed Flo to an extension we would have had to draft one with the felix pick. I believe that was 20th. That wouldnt have gotten us much as good tackles go early. That means a 4th or 5th would have been tied to it to move up enough. Not signing Flo would have probably cost us Felix and either Scandrick or Choice. Kinda scary when you think of it like that.
If Free developes then this is a case of management or GM Jerry getting it right. If not we may have to sell out a bit to get one in this draft or the next.

KICK ASS every day!!!
