State of the BTB Address

As you might guess by my lack of participation here recently, I've been extremely busy with a variety of projects, partly behind the scenes trying to make good things happen on BTB, and partly some other work I took on for SB Nation. (Shameless plug sbnation.com). Hey, I got to make a living somehow.

In my recent absence, Rafael and Aaron have been doing the lion's share of the work on the blog and I can't thank them enough. When Rafael approached me about merging blogs last year, I was thrilled. No one does analysis like Raf. I want you guys to know, Raf puts in a lot of work behind the scenes, too. Stuff you guys don't see, but he and I are in discussion continuously about all the things we're doing on BTB, and we don't move ahead unless we both agree. It's been a great partnership and we are already planning more new stuff. Stay tuned.

Let's give some love to Aaron, too. He'd been applying to write on the site for a while, and I should have been smart enough to bring him on sooner. He's part of BTB's plan for total Cowboys coverage. His VRR's do the work of finding Cowboys news so you don't have to. He's also doing a gameballs segment this season and a NFC East roundup. Aaron puts work in for BTB almost everyday of the week. So give him some love.

There were a few questions in the comments about Jim Vance and Carl Shelton. Sorry I didn't do a better job of communicating on this one. Just got really busy and blew it.

Anyway, Jim has addressed his absence from the front-page in the comments of another rthread. But I'll re-post it here for convenience.

The pressure to come up with relevant and cogent stories is tremendous. Add to that the BTB bloggers are all very knowledgeable and have rapier wits and will challenge anything they don't agree with. I really started to feel like I was in over my head.

I went through a couple of personal issues recently (but all is well now) and I still read every BTB article and post.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate them and I enjoyed my stint on the front page. Honestly though, I'm enjoying the blog much more now without the pressure. I'm still part of the family and will make comments (when I have something brilliant to add) or if I'm FIRST!!! to post.

Thanks again for the kind words, it is a monster. Be appreciative of the writers here, they are doing a phenomenal job.

I want to join in thanking Jim for his contributions over the offseason. They were invaluable. Thanks Jim, you're always part of the BTB family.

Carl has a variety of reasons he can't post to the front-page right now. He's still around but he's on hiatus for now. It's possible he could return some day, we'll just have to wait and see.

I echo Jim's thoughts on just how hard it is coming up with stuff all the time. And not get repetitive or boring. It's not easy. I'm very happy to see that most of you are enjoying our latest addition to the blog, Mike Fisher. We think he brings something new and exciting to BTB. We like to offer a buffet of different styles and viewpoints on the front-page.

Basically, I just wanted to update you on the changes around here lately. And wanted to thank you guys for supporting BTB. Raf and I always feel the need to provide the best here, because you guys deserve it. We are constantly striving to improve, so even though I'm a little less visible lately, it doesn't mean I'm not hard at work on BTB, but more behind the scenes for now. Besides with Raf, Aaron and Mike writing, we are more than covered.

I'll be around watching football this weekend. I'll check back on this thread regularly and answer any questions you guys might have about BTB.

Thanks,

Dave

P.S. - Thanks for being respectful of the community guidelines in the comments, even without me on here haranguing you daily. You wouldn't believe how many times I get compliments about BTB and the way the comment threads are classy and not ridiculous flame-wars like elsewhere; something everybody can read and enjoy. That's because of you guys, so thanks.

Awesome stuff

I was one of the curious ones. Thanks for filling us in, and great job to you all for the hard work you guys do maintaining this blog!

You guys do an awesome job. It's obvious just by visiting the other teams' blogs

the amount of work that gets churned out here far exceeds the others. I’m not surprised a few writers decided to step back from the fire as I would imagine it consumes hours and hours of time. Much admiration to all the writers for that, as well as admiration for the posters’ many different opinions and viewpoints. These are the things that keep me coming back daily and will continue to do so.

Sometimes I have to remind myself how lucky we are at BTB

I work exclusively behind my computer all day and I am constantly checking BTB looking for the next great piece written about our beloved Cowboys and find myself disappointed when there is nothing new. I have to remind myself that I am just spoiled by all the great coverage and that is easily done by going over to some of the other blogs (Hogs Haven comes to mind). So thank you for spoiling us with a plethora of information and analysis, I don’t even go anywhere else for Cowboys information anymore this site is that awesome. Thanks to everyone to writes and contributes to the site to make it the best on the web.

Without a doubt the best place to go for Cowboys news.

The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!

Grizz, Raf, Bigrigga, Fish...

I love your stuff. Keeps me coming back for more. This has been a great way to interact with people that have the same passion as I do.

The great part of your analysis is that it passes the eyeball test. I am not nearly as well versed in the intricacies of football as you are. But I know what is good and what’s not when I see it. You guys don’t use statistics to prop up the team or any one player. You are after the truth, and I dig that. 99% of what you say passes the eyeball test. I feel smarter on football every week.

One request for columns. Can you educate us knuckledraggers on the systems that are run? For instance, our offense runs x scheme where we try to exploit this part of the D. Or, Marcus Spears is a good d end in our scheme because of x and y. For the most part, I have very limited knowledge of our schemes and what the goal of each position or unit has. Raf does a great job of taking metrics (KC Joyner stuff) and incorporating that into the posts, which is quite enjoyable.

Bottom line, love it. Can’t get enough.

Guys,

I’ve been lurking for a long time and have recently started posting comments as well. I just wanted to agree, and say that you are doing an amazing job. This is my favorite site to visit about Cowboys, and i’m here at least a couple times a day. Great job, and I hope you all keep up the good work! Thanks everyone!

by Rickyy. on Sep 19, 2009 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

Keep up the excellent work all... BTB is second to none.

It’s easy to forget how much work goes into the writing, not to mention all the organization behind the scenes. Grizz, Raf, Aaron, Fish and everyone posting … you make following the Cowboys all that much more entertaining!

I have rarely said it

Thanks for all you do. This is the first site I go to to get the latest and most accurate Dallas Cowboys updates and analysis.

I have been following Rafael from his last 2 sides, because as you said his anlysis is the best. I often check this site and in the past the previous 2 sites looking for his latest Tread. I will say this site has been the best. The SB nation has done an excellent job with the format and the quality of the writers.

Beside thank you, Aaron and Rafael I wanted to let you know your last comments are very true and have allowed me to turn even young readers to your site. Keep up the good work.

P.S. Besides policing bad behavior I wish you would police some people from bad mouthing ex-cowboys (primarily Emmit). I know that sometimes he has deserved it, but it’s just a pep-peeve of mine. To me it’s kind of like talking bad about your family.

Writers,

Please write an Tread as to why Woodson deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. I know I am very bias, but the longer he has been gone the more I know how good he was. IMO we have struggled more to replace Darren than we have to replace Troy.

Woodson is a Hall of Famer!

Thanks for the update Dave...

A big thanks to you, Raf, Aaron for all the work you guys have put into improving on an already superb blog, and welcome to the new addition, Fish (good for both parties, I think).

A special shout out to Jim Vance and Carl (GloryDays88) Shelton for filling in with some good articles over the long boring off-season. Glad to hear Jim is OK now, and hope to see the occasional Carl Shelton article during the season.

I’ve started reading some of the other team’s blogs more this year, and there are some good writers out there, but for overall quality content, selection, and contribution by the bloggers, I have to say this blog is the best of the bunch. Congrats guys.

So it begins...

Absolutely

It has to be next to impossible to come up with good stuff during the offseason and you folks do an awesome job. Like many on this blog, I don’t even look anywhere else for Cowboys news.

Thanks for providing the best place to talk Cowboys anywhere

I’m here far too often, and shockingly enough every time I come back there’s more to digest.

Kudos to all involved.

Thanks for the update

I was wondering what happened to those guys.

I have only been coming here since this last offseason-got the link for the DMN, but I am glad I found it. It is wonderful to read well-written articles from the writers here, but also Fanposts from other bloggers (5Blings & One Cool Customer are 2 of my favorites)about my Cowboys that you can’t get anywhere else. The comments are always entertaining, I can’t get enough.

Appreciate all you do!

You guys set THE standard for premium news coverage and information

I can’t even believe that months ago before I found this site, I was satisfied with ESPN or dallascowboys.com. BTB is second to none, and it is all due to the unbelievable passion and work ethic that you writers have. Keep it up, and congratulations on setting the bar so high.

Many thanks to the writers and contributers

This is, and has been my “go to” site for a couple years now. I read every morning with my coffee and sneak in as many visits as possible throughout the day. Combining the 2 sites has really turned this place into a monster that shall not be rivaled any time soon. Frankly, I doubt it’s even possible. So thanks a lot guys and keep up the great work!

If I could add anything to the site it would be a weekly blogger appearance by one of the Cowboys, kinda like Marty B. does for the DMN. Easier said than done, right? Oh, and more cheerleaders.

Trying to remember what it was like before I found BTB in 2006...

That’s tough…all we had then was Mosely and the DMN. I was a big fan of C-F as well, but it just wasn’t enough. Then I came across this site and it became a staple of my daily internet browsing .

Back then it was just Grizz, and I have no clue how he did it.

Being able to see how this community has grown, as SB Nation has grown, and how Grizz has put together the absolute best Dallas Cowboys website on the net….it’s special. No doubt about it.

THank you to all of the contibutors

of BTB… those that have contributed in the past, the recent past and the present… I have enjoyed every writers comments, articles, posts, etc… not once have i thought to myself “this guy has no idea what he’s talking about” (ex. DMN, espn, etc)… the thing i appreciate the most is when the contributors question what needs to be questioned… SO, I appreciate the work of BTB and keep up the good work, and I look forward to each and every post I read!

Thanks for the update Grizz

A lot of really mean-spirited bloggers said you had outgrown us, but not me! OK, maybe me, but only after DalaiLuke talked me into it.

Nothing I could add that wouldn’t be obvious. This site has great writers, but because of the tone you guys have set, we also have some of the best bloggers with the sharpest football discussions I’ve ever seen. It’s a package deal that you guys have made possible through hard work and a clear vision. Thanks again.

Only site I even really visit.

The only “mainstream” columnist I really paid much attention to was Dr. Z and it’s sad to hear he’s been taken out of the game by unforeseen natural circumstances. I find Raf to be the most balanced but never downtrodden Cowboys analyst out there. Keep up the good work. Why would I even consider going elsewhere for my Cowboys fix?

by MadMick on Sep 20, 2009 7:03 PM CDT reply actions

Keep up the good work Grizz.

I’m sure there are a lot of people like me that have been coming the site for years, but are posting a little less, even though we are still around. Be assured, that we know this is THE site for Cowboys fans.

Some love for Jim

Jim… first of all— thanks. I enjoyed all of your posts. And I understand your comments about being constantly challenged. Personally, I think there are a number of people who offer very little in terms of contribution to the site, instead choosing to scour each post and the comments in an attempt to tear down, belittle, or simply rip someone. I don’t think that will ever change, so I guess you need a real thick skin to post on here. But thanks for everythign and keep the comments coming…

I'm a recent disoverer of BTB and I have to say, GREAT SITE!

I was thinking in the months coming into the season about starting a blog about my beloved Cowboys and then I found BTB. It’s just what I was looking for as it allows fans to post their thoughts and have their own columns, more or less. It’s also a great way to connect with other fans around the country who LOVE our ’Boys and HATE our other NFC East rivals. One thing in particular I do enjoy is the ability to post our thoughts as the game is going on and either vent our frustrations or celebrate a sweet victory.

Thanks for providing this site guys. I know it’s got to be a challenge keeping this all going and satisfying all of us die-hard Cowboy Fans.

Great job!

Greets from an old timer

Grizz—just wanted to tell you that I’m so impressed with what you’ve done with the site. I usually only get to read the RSS feed so I don’t comment much, but it’s amazing how far this thing has come from your original blog.

Congratulations for a fantastic site and best of luck on keeping it going!

You guys became part of my daily rotation of websites. Raf has been a superb addition and will help keep me coming back for years to come. Congrats guys, keep up the great work.

I've been a long time follower of both blogs, pre-merger

So its nice to come to only 1 spot.

One thing that I would LOVE to see added again is the summaries of Wade’s press conferences. I often don’t have time to listen to them, so I really appreciated this site providing a loose translation. Is this something we can add again soon?

Thank you.

BTB rocks, and we can't thank all the contributing writers enough for your hard work.

Thanks to everyone who is contributing and has contributed in the past for making this the best Cowboys site ever.

This is a Great Site...

I can definitely see why there are so many people active on the Boards here….my knowledge of football let alone Cowboys has increased exponentially reading this site. The fact that you guys are maintaining this site purely out of your own volition and not driven by the financial rewards of it speaks volumes for your commitment and passion for the game. Keep the good stuff going…..
Just wondering…the DMN blog has the cowboy players blogging for them…is there a plan to have some of the cowboy players ex or current write some guest columns here…i am sure Marty B would be willing!!!
