well, I will just leave this here.

you normally need to win 10 games to make it to the post season. as long as dallas wins 9 before they lose 5, they should be set.

Who cares?

Tony Romo...

snatching defeat from the jaws of victory… again. The worst big game quarterback in recent memory.

by Montecito Tex on Sep 21, 2009 3:25 AM CDT reply actions

This was a big game

The opening of the most expensive stadium in the world is a pretty big event.

The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!

by aussie_cowboy on Sep 21, 2009 3:56 AM CDT up reply actions

If your a player, or a coach, a game that decides you going to the playoffs or an actual

playoff game is big. Not a regular season game in sept. There aren’t any big consequences to losing this game. Losing always sucks, but it’s not like the pressure of losing and your head coaching career being over.

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 4:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

regular season games cant be “big” games. And tonight was one of them.

The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!

by aussie_cowboy on Sep 21, 2009 4:37 AM CDT up reply actions

You don't think...

losing a home game to a division opponent is huge? Games in December won’t matter with performances like last night.

I’m just glad I didn’t let myself be fooled by last weeks overachievment.

This team is gutless.

from Vince Lombardi

If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?

by BishopWest on Sep 21, 2009 4:33 AM CDT up reply actions

The context of the phrase "Big Game" was that Romo can't win a big game

It was in reference to his poor record in December and his one playoff loss. The reason the games in December are called BIG is because you don’t have anymore chances to make up ground.
If you say that all games are big, then Romo’s pretty good at winning those games, if you are refering to his record in December then this game doesn’t qualify. You can’t have it both ways. Romo is wins games like this one.

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 4:59 AM CDT up reply actions

if you win enough games in Sept through Nov

you could lose ALL of DECEMBER’s games and still make the playoffs

The only reason Dec games are “big” is because you put yourself in bad situation by losing games earlier in the year.

by BishopWest on Sep 21, 2009 5:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Again, the context is that Romo doesn't win big games

He has a pretty good record in “big” games, just not the ones in december. besides, this is as much the defenses fault as it is romos

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 5:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I must disagree

it was much more Romo’s fault – even he said so in the presser

by BishopWest on Sep 21, 2009 5:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, if you have a lead with 3:20 to go, and the other team

is deep in your territory, there is no excuse for letting them run out the clock in route to and easy field go. The coverage was horrible, and there was no pass pressure. The defense, made Manningham and Smith look like hall of fame wide receivers both had well over 100 yards and 10 catches, BOTH of them. Last week they made Byron Leftwich look good.

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 5:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I like TNew and Scandrick

but, they were horrendous on the last drive. For being a “shut down” corner Newman got schooled by a second year reciever on the TD. Romo was bad, but the entire secondary forgot how to cover, and Ratliff and Spencer were the only bright spots all night.

by GunsUp on Sep 21, 2009 7:27 AM CDT up reply actions

+1 Does Ware even have a sack yet?

Yeah, I think we can stop worrying about Spencer now…It was the secondary and Romo to blame for this loss..Terry has no juice in this argument sticking up for his boy. That was just horrendous on his part. Blame Garrett some also because he shouldve kept pounding the ball until the Giants stopped us, especially with Romo playing as badly as he was in the second half…

by Boyzfan94 on Sep 21, 2009 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

His second half was actually better

But I’d look to the pass rush before the secondary. Some of that has to be covering receivers while Eli has time to text with Peyton.

I dont think losing Ellis had anything to do with it...

Spencer has been getting some good pressure, but they seem a step late.

by Boyzfan94 on Sep 21, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

What I meant.......

without Ellis we don’t have any good depth to bring in extra pass rushers. Remember how we would put Ellis next to Spencer to get more pressure? Just a thought.

Newman

Nah, he was still fast as lightning, I just rewatched the whole thing on DVR. It seemed to me he was very worried about the run.

Don't think so

He looked fine to me.

Manningham burned everyone of the CB’s. I watched him do the same thing last week to the WASH CB’s.

So it begins...

by APerfectStar on Sep 21, 2009 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

It was definitely more his fault than anyone's

he seemed to get confused or something out there and his decision-making looked off. The one bright spot is that he made great decisions on when to check to runs at the line. Collinsworth made a great observation about the chess match with Romo and Pierce.

The defense though should concern you more because for the second week in a row they have barely sniffed the QB. That will make for a long season if they can’t play better, and it won’t matter whether you have Romo or Brady back there.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

by dunkman on Sep 21, 2009 7:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I am concerned with the lack of sacks

But don’t forget the caliber of the 2 offensive lines Dallas played. They were on the field a lot last night, and often had a short field to defend. There was decent pressure on Manning. Romo laying an egg in another “must win” game concerns me a lot more than DL. I’d rank the CB play my 2nd biggest concern, they were horrible too. I"m not sure Newman is healthy and Scandrick and Jenkins don’t seem to get it yet.

by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 21, 2009 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I know they are good

But we all know Romo has games like this and every time has rebounded. And it’s frankly easier to fix one player – through his own focus and through play calling to compensate. For example Eli was a pick machine until Coughlin adjusted the game plan to elminate what was killing them.

The lack of pressure is now two weeks in a row. The DBs are impacted by that as well. Several that Newman gave up were probably because Eli had way too much time and great passing lanes. If you want to win in the East, it’s all about stopping the QB.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

by dunkman on Sep 21, 2009 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

In theory I would agree

But this is not a new problem with Romo. Listening to him after the game last night talking about taking responsibilty (good) and promising to get better (good) sounded like an alcoholic promising not to drink again. This is the same MO he’s had since becoming a starter. He intellectually gets it but can’t seem to overcome it. Maybe it’s the coaching, maybe it’s him. The DL has proven they can rush the passer,

by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 21, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree.......

did you hear Tony Dungy talking about Romo before the game and half-time? He basically said that it’s common knowledge that you can pretty easily force Romo into a turn-over because of his decision making. Whenever you have that kind of reputation, it’s pretty hard to beat. Not trying to beat on the guy, but other teams don’t respect him all that much.

by texstar on Sep 21, 2009 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

The Giants certainly seemed to respect the deep ball

and that my friend, is because of Romo.

The point I was making was only that

Romo is obviously respected enough to gameplan around. Not absolving him from blame, but I think to say that teams don’t respect him is off base. Because honestly, even if the players don’t, I assure you that the D-coordinators do. In fact, I would bet Dungy was wishing his defense had a better plan when Tony tore his undefeated Colts up back in 2006.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I don't think that's true

I think teams basically game plan to take him out of the game because when he’s on, he’s nearly unstoppable – mobile, accurate, improvisational.

But I do think they know that confusing him and getting to him can lead to turnovers and they game plan that.

by dunkman on Sep 21, 2009 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

If he threw three picks a game I'd agree

but he doesn’t. That’s all I’m saying. Even if he never gets it under completely control, he doesn’t lose a lot of games. He’s like 41-13 as a starter?

i think he needs to play better than last night, hands down. He looked rattled and uncertain.

My point is, the defense is now bad two weeks in a row. If you want to find something to make you worry about for playoff chances, it’s that. Romo could snap out of it completely and they’d still not get very far. They havebn’t proven anything this season.

Not really

leadership is about motivating other people. Romo’s performance over time might impact his ability to lead, but his ability to lead doesn’t impact his performance.

He had a bad game. It happens. If it happens a lot more frequently, he’ll be out of a job. If he gets back on his feet like he has in the past, he’ll be fine.

If you make it generic, sure it sounds great

but making specific indivdual decisions, not decisions that change the group dynamic, no. The President’s decision on breakfast cereals doesn’t impact his relationship with Congress.

So no, Tony making the wrong read and throwing a bad pass isn’t cause by his lack of leadership. It’s caused by not reading the situation correctly. Leadership is about influencing group dynamics. Now, if he blamed other players for his mistakes or refused to take accountability, those would be leadership flaws.

Can his mistakes over time affect his ability to lead? Absolutely. He has to have the confidence of his team mates. But it won’t affect his individual decision-making ont he field.

Making a loss about one person

is more satisfying than a faceless “pass rush” or “secondary”. Everyone likes a single person to blame.

Romo had a bad game, but every QB in the league does, we just don’t watch every snap and every throw as it were the last one on earth. If Romo is the real deal, he’ll show it over the span of his career not in one Sunday night game. I think he has what it takes, hejust needs to keep working on decision making and execution.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you

Here’s the pattern since Romo has become the starter 3 years ago (he’s not some young QB any more, he’s half way through his career). He will have a lot of good and a bunch of great games. His stats are nearly off the charts. Then, on the biggest stages, in the most imporatant games, he lays a big egg. He’ll make the same judgement mistakes as the last time he had a stinker. That’s the pattern he’s established.

I wasn’t thrilled with the defense last night but you can’t discount the amount of time they were on the field and how often it was a short field. 3 of the 4 turnovers were complete momentum changers; Dallas had it and lost it. The fact is, take away the gift points and the Giants would have scored less than 20 points. I would take that over the course of a season.

by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 21, 2009 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Eh

he’s won some big games on big stages. Have you already forgotten virtually the same circumstances last September, the Eagles shoot-out. Holy cow. He was awesome.

I think teams at times figure out how to rattle him, show him things he isn’t expecting and sometimes he doesn’t react well. Last night he looked very uncertain to me. I think that’s when the “impulse plays” happen.

There are lots of patterns on this team over the past three years. How about giving up long passes. Not getting pressure on the QB. Not getting turnovers. We choose to look at the QB because he’s most visible and influential position, but do you really think they win a SB this season with the defense you’ve seen the past two weeks?

Of course, that was Romo’s fault. /sarcasm.

Manning was way too comfortable and regularly throwing for 10 – 15 yards each. Romo has his share of the blame, but so does the defense.

Nah, i got yah, Wade must be sweatting. If this team goes 10-6

and loses in the first round and the defense is average, It’ll be a lot easier for Jerry to consider firing him (as he is supposed to be the defensive guru) and bring in Shanahan (rumor has it jerry has him on speed dial). The defense is his bread and butter, but he may have put too much stock in Spencer. I really think he doesn’t “lead” the team as much as he should. We may be need to reflect on the firing of the defensive coordinator last year… Wade was really the one calling the shots. Maybe the problem last year wasn’t the defensive coordinator, maybe the problem was Wade.

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 3:38 AM CDT up reply actions

The rumor

is shanahan. I remember back during the dark ages that was the Barry Switzer years, we were about to play SF when they had Rice (and we had Bill Bates, Deon Sanders). Shanahan called jerry to warn him that “there is a problem with your defence”. Our coaches didn’t listen and Rice torched the D pretty good. So, they go way back, and are reportedly good friends. It would make a lot of sense.

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 4:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I definitely agree about the over pursuing

There was one play in which we seriously almost let Jacobs cut back against us. With his running style, that is kind of ridiculous. Overall though, the running defense was much improved and showed a better understanding of gap assignments. Hopefully they approach the pass rush problems with the same tenacity this week that we approached the run defense problems this week.

And although Romo has games like this, he doesn’t have that many. The defense not getting to the QB is now a mini-trend and there is no shot at playoffs if they can’t pressure the QB.

I've never been one to blog while I'm trying to watch the game.

And when the Cowboys lose, I’ve been known to take a week or more before I’m ready to blog again. Well, I was doing good. I logged onto the blog this morning and saw this story. Must have been some kind of night on here. This is what took down the DMN blog. When I started blogging a few years ago I was amazed at how hateful Cowboys fans were during and after a loss. I still don’t think the DMN has recovered. Actually I think it’s a bunch of fans of other teams on there now that have totally polluted that site. I’m glad to see BTB taking a strong stance against this type of behavior. As if losing the game was not enough of a bummer, to have pissing contests with other “fans” just makes it that much worse.

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "where the heck is the ceiling?"

I hate it when we lose I don’t want to talk to anyone or hear from anyone. However this blog should be the place we can go to express our thoughts and feelings, if you can’t do that amongst people who you supposedly have alot in common with then where can you go. We all have diff. opinions, feelings and Ideas. To put someone else down especially in a manner that is hateful an mean spirited is just wrong. We are not Philly… we can do without the internal bashing.

We are starting to now paint the bulls-eye on Wade instead of Tony. Tony was kinda -sorta crappy last nite, but I don’t think Wade will give him the spanking he deserves. Cowher or Shanahan would have his little pieces lookin for each other this a.m.

if we keep getting to the QB a tad bit late....

…would it not make sense to play bump & run to delay the receivers’ routes and throw off the timing so that the QB has the ball for half a second longer or throws an errant pass?

Or are we already playing bump and run and are just terrible at it?

Or do we not have the personnel to play bump and run?

Or has the defense decided against sacks and interceptions and for hurrys, hits and “bend but don’t break” coverage?

Tony Romo is not Tom Brady 2.0

As a whole, I think that Cowboys fans need to wake up and realize that Tony Romo is the not the second coming of Tom Brady. Lightning did not strike twice. We don’t have an all-time great that was miraculously discovered sitting on our bench. He’s not our diamond in the rough. Tony Romo is what he is. He’s an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois. He hasn’t improved or developed as a player in the time since that first interception he threw against the Giants way back when and I think some of it just comes down to the basic fact that he doesn’t have the skill set required as much as he or the Cowboys fans would want him to.

To the people that say that the Cowboys wouldn’t be winning at all without Romo: Maybe. But even if the Cowboys had 2-3 really bad seasons instead of 2-3 almost-was seasons, at least the problems would be addressed and the organization could develop. As is, Romo is a band-aid and Tylenol for a broken arm. Eventually, you’re gonna have to get that cast.

And no, Romo isn’t the only problem. He’s just the biggest one, but they all come down to the basic fact that no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room. This team has been losing the same way since Parcells was still on the bench. Turnovers, Penalties, Bad QB Play, and a horrible secondary. It’s time to blow up the Cowboys and start again. The current team has talent, but eventually, you gotta realize talent alone doesn’t win championships and in some cases, it can’t even win a playoff game.

It is game 2 dude...

If this was the last game of the season, I would be much more inclined to agree. If you asked me a year ago, it was clear to me that we were going to make a huge run and all that got us was a 9-7 season. I know it is tough, but at least let this season run its course before we decide to blow up and build a new foundation.

Can anyone count

the times we blew a tackle in the backfield? How many times did someone from the secondary blow right past the play or slide off of someone’s leg behind the line of scrimmage? If we are going to get to the ball carrier in the backfield, how about a good tackle next time??

I can place blame like everyone else, but the Giants had way too many yards after first contact.

I’ll leave Romo alone…for now.

Romo and the Defense suck!!!!

Romo did well at times but he made too many mistakes. The Giants were missing 2 starters in their secondary and still sucked. I don’t understand how you can play this poor KNOWING how big this game is.

Is the question answered NOW?? Manning is soooo much better than Romo. No questions asked. I used to disagree on that but I realized last night, Manning is waaaaay better than Romo!!

The defense played very poor. They stopped the run but the secondary was HORRIBLE!!

This Defense has to improve ASAP or Coach Wade Phillips will be gone very soon!!

the part that gets me the most.......

even with all of Romo’s bone headed plays last night, if the defense had just played that last series, we would all be happy today. The Romo lovers would be out in force saying how he pulled another one out and everything would be rosy. The only thing positive that I can pull out of this is hopefully Romo is learning, that more times than not, the Buffalo miracles just don’t happen. Early in his career, he was able to pull off miracle games but you can’t keep sustaining that and win.

by texstar on Sep 21, 2009 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Especially when

the reason a miracle is required is from a stupid gift mistake to the opponent.

by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 21, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Part of our problem too is the inability to take the gifts that the Giants tried to give us...

Eli throws it right to Spencer and I understand that it isn’t the easiest catch, but that is a play that has to be made. The Giants get a holding on their last drive, but we then give up a 15 yard pass to let them get back in favorable position. The things that the Giants used to kill us could have worked equally well for us and we just didn’t make it happen.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I noticed something

And this may have been pointed out before or maybe I’m way off base, but it seems like none of your guys have a “nose” for the football. The Giants got unbelievably lucky, but there was always one of their guys around the football. I’ve noticed a trend the last couple of years that our guys are never around when those lucky breaks can fall our way. Offense and Defense. I find it hard to believe that we have not forced a turnover and don’t have a single sack. Scandrick and Romo both need their butts kicked for their incredibly terrible play last night.

by Mr. Patrick on Sep 21, 2009 10:43 AM CDT reply actions

the problem with this team the last TWO games is the lack of focus

and sloppy play. this team has underachieved two games in a row. This was supposed to be a the new “tough” wade. Apparently, someone has forgotten to coach the players. Same mistakes and sloppy play, team wide, as last year. I believe teams take on the personality of their head coach. And ours is soft, just like his team.

by just4fun on Sep 21, 2009 10:53 AM CDT reply actions

a large percentage of these players, played for Parcells. As Parcells used to say, Stupid Players make stupid plays. Kinda have to agree. I’m not rationalizing for Wade, cause it is on him as well as the players, but these guys keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

I'm sorry coaching+philosophy changes just stunt your growth,

the teams that win or have the chance to win don’t keep rotating coach’s or philosophies. In our division alone the Eagles,Giants have been together longer than Dallas+Washington and it shows in their consistency. The Eagle’s win games with less talent than anybody,The Giants win by adding young players with Vets but none of it works if you change constantly. Washington drafts Cambell and every year he has to learn a new system or HC, he’ll never take the next step. Romo and the defense would start over, maybe we get lucky, maybe we get worse.

bummed out also

hi all, i live here in Giant country and man do i have to hear it this week..

at the beginning of the season, reastically, what would you call a ‘BIG’ game??
1) any playoff game – includes the SB
2) any game during the regular season that is like a playoff game (win and ‘IN’ type games, like last years finale vs. Philly)
3) any division home game
4) any division game
5) any conference game
6) any other game

i.e. we can lose a game to an AFC opponent and it’s not near as bad as losing to a division opponent…

stack on top of this that the Giants are early favorites as one of the better teams in the NFC and NFL for that matter, and this WAS A BIG GAME…

Romo has not proven he can win a ‘BIG’ game and until he wins a few, or a bunch, that is the way it is…. not just for him but for anyone….

simple as that…

by stephena on Sep 21, 2009 1:32 PM CDT reply actions

Romo has a 4-2, 3-3 record in the division so that is 7 division wins home and away together. Taking home field

advantage against GB in dallas in 07 and keeping it for the remainder of the year; those are all big games by your and my definition.
