All Hail Tony Romo

I hate to do it, because I knew every fanpost would somehow mention Tony today, but I really need to get this off my chest.  Tony Romo is and will be our qb for at least another four years so stop all the comments that we need a new qb.

Tony is the best qb I have seen in Dallas for a very long time, and I think it is almost selfish for people to even call him out.  I know fans always expect the best, but Tony Romo is definitely a top Qb in the league.  I know that our Rbs had 251 rushing yards, so you are not gonna agree with me when I say that we could not have put up that many points without out him, but do you realize that teams are worried about him beating them through the air, so it did not allow them to stack defenders to stop the run?  For the Giants it was almost the opposite last night.  We schemed to shut down the run, so Eli (who is nowhere near Tony's caliber) was able to light it up last night.  Without Tony our team is very mediocre.  We saw this when we had to bring in Brad Johnson last year.  The one thing I have come to expect with Wades supposedly genius defensive scheme is that the other team is going to put up a lot of points against us, so Tony has to counter if we are going to win.

I know that his three turnovers created 21 points, but seriously where the heck was the pressure on the defensive side of the ball.  Why give Ware 100 million dollars if he is not gonna even touch Eli?  It seems like a waste of money to me.  I am tired of people calling for Tony's job, and we would be much much worse without him.  If anything it is time to get that Marshmellow off our sidelines he is definitely outstayed his welcome.  If we can not touch Byron Leftwich and then we do this against the Giants this is the head we need to be calling for!!!!!!

For some positives, we created three turnovers and still were in the game against a team that created none.  What this tells me is we are the better team... Tony just had a bad game, like all qbs do.  Did anyone see Brady's performance yesterday?  We are the better team, and I fully expect to return the favor to the Giants when we play them again.  Yes we lost last night, but am I sad or upset????No way I really like our team this year and we have only played 2 games.  I am excited for this season and am very confident we will finally win a playoff game (That is of course if we actually can pressure the qb.....It might have been a bad idea to let Ellis go).

laughable

Eli has a ring, he accomplished that by going on the road to beat Tampa, then went into Dallas to beat a 13-3 number one ranked team in the NFC, then went into Greenbay to beat the second ranked team in the NFC, then in the superbowl lead his team on a drive in the last minute to beat an undeafeated team ranked number one in the entire league to win the superbowl, and you think Eli is nowhere near Romo’s caliber, laughable…This team is average with Romo

please, after all these years just go root for a team you actually like. Redskins, Giants, Eagles, whoever it may be because it definitely isn’t the Cowboys.

Romo has had significantly better stats than Eli over the years, ya Eli has a ring but so do a lot of just decent QBs. I know Romo has some bad games like yesterday but he has a lot of games that are better than Eli could ever hope to play.

I’ve said it many times before stats just don’t impress me. You can argue stats all you want, but at the end of the day Superbowls are what count! There just no arguement that can top it!

But...

Winning a game is a team thing, not a one player thing.

Would you really rather have Trent Dilfer than Tony Romo? Really?

No, but I'd rather have fewer PIC 6's

Trent Dilfer - Brad Johnson

Football = Team Sport.

I rest my case.

Trent Dilfer has a ring and Marino doesnt who cares about rings

Tony’s stats which are the only thing that u can compare not rings because that is a teams effort not just the qbs are a whole heck of a lot better

end stats don't mean anything, it's about championships

who cares about rings….are you serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every offensive play starts with the ball in the quarterbacks hands, why do you think they are the highest paid players on average in the league???

by Deke on Sep 21, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who cares about rings?

Ask anyone who roots for Philadelphia!

I’m sorry Rio, but that is sheer arrogance to think that people don’t care about getting to the top of the mountain.

I think he just meant that evaluating player versus player at the QB position

should not be just done with Super Bowls considering that they are won and lost as a team.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Most QB's with great stats also have supporting casts that contribute

I’m not clear what distinction we are trying to make, but let me just crystallize my viewpoint;

From a fan’s view, it’s safe to say that Trent Dilfer’s win for the Ravens is head and shoulders above any accomplishment of Dan Marino’s.

The Blings are historically significant. The same cannot be said about some career yardage mark.

Say what you want

The most I was ever impressed with BRady was with a makeshift offensive line and a whole bunch of garbage receivers in 2006, when he put up decent offensive numbers and made jabar gafney look like a legitimate #1. Yet he went out in the first round to a denver team that year in which he made one single mistake (the bailey int).

Well I agree on some level..

i agree that on a player’s level, a Super Bowl win is exponentially more important to them (as it would be for me) than any personal accomplishments. I am sure that Dan Marino would trade his records for a ring any day of the week.

However, I think it is a disservice to real objective analysis when you simply judge a QB’s place in history only by their rings (or lack thereof). By doing so, you are ignoring so many other factors that it hardly reflects a real individually based break down of a QB’s skill. To use this example, when discussing Trent Dilfer versus Dan Marino as quarterbacks, the comparison must take into account all the records Marino broke (and not just his lack of rings) because otherwise, you would come to the conclusion that Trent Dilfer was a better QB (something I think we can all agree is not true). I surely think that Dilfer’s ring and performance in the playoffs is fair game for inclusion in the discussion, but far too often these comparisons become too simplified in a battle of stats versus team success. I think that the best place to look to for the truth in a player’s skill is by factoring in some combination of those two schools of thought.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

This argument is not winnable

…because it revolves around a value judgement. Plus, the Dilfer versus Marino thing is a tired argument.

Big Ben vs. Marino is a better comparison. Who is more worthy of Canton in your eyes?

I place more weight on how QB’s lead their teams and set the tone.

Some people see more value in consistently high statistical performance.

It is what it is.

The same Eli in 2008 had 3 TDs and 3 INTs in the last 5 regular season games. Then in the playoff game had 0 Tds and 2 ints. That means in the last 6 games of 2008, Eli could not pass for 200 yards, but is elite. Oh, that’s right, if you win a Super Bowl, it gives you a pass. I just don’t understand why some people are still Cowboys fans since Romo is not going anywhere for a long time.

My favorite semi pro teams are the Eagles and Giants

by RealAlbertEinstein on Sep 21, 2009 2:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

who ever said Eli was elite

Eli had 13 turnovers last year in 16 games, Romo 21 in 13 games. Which player protects the football??

If Eli was playing for the cowboys last night and Romo for the Giants, the Giants get blown out, end of story

How many turnovers did Romo have the last fives games in 2008, the number is 14, again who protets the football..

If Romo has another December like the last two years, this organization will be starting the search for his replacement beginning at the end of this season…

A little early to judge

Just like it was to early to assume that we were going to the Super Bowl in week 2 last year (as many fans did).

same could be said for rex grossman

or eli manning prior to the 2007 playoffs. Or the eagles or cards when EVERYONE thought they were dead in the water last year.

We have a qb who just needs to have that lightswitch go on, like Eli. Romo sure as heck has the ability to make it happen. That makes him one of 7-10 guys in this league with that potential. I’m not gonna throw the next 5 years down the toilet while our oline, witten, roy, barber, ware, newman, bradie waste their primes with some average FA qb

Ellis

I completely agree that it was a bad idea to let Ellis go. I guess all that time he was grumbling about not getting enough respect, he had a point.

Spencer just ain’t getting it done. He can’t beat his blocker despite the fact that Ratliff and Ware are the ones drawing double teams— Spencer is alone with his man and still can’t get to the QB.

Meanwhile, Ellis has 3 sacks and a forced fumble so far in Oakland. We could have used that production.

+1 And it isn't the competition

Some might say he did that against KC. But KC will probably finish with a better record than Tampa Bay.

We Will Live and Die With Romo

And I strongly stress the word DIE. He’s a gunslinger with a penchant for choking when it matters most. His numbers make him an amazing fantasy quarterback, but unless something clicks in his head that hasn’t clicked yet, he will NEVER be an elite quarterback – one who you give the ball to when you’re down 4 points with 2 minutes to go.

Could it happen? Sure it could, but ignore his gawdy stats and look what he’s done in big games – meaningful games – and he’s somewhere between Quincy Carter and Danny White.

by GhostofGaryHogeboom on Sep 21, 2009 5:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I want to tar and feather Romo just as much as the next guy

But I wanted to say this:

I would absolutely give Romo the ball if we’re down 4 points with 2 minutes to go because I consider him an excellent QB when we’re behind and the clock is against us. It’s when he’s most focused and dangerous.

It’s just that there’s a high risk at other times that he’s going to lose concentration and make the wrong choice/play/decision because he is so committed to the home run. Maybe someone should beat that out of him.

Everything's looking up, Milhouse!

I'm sick of the "would you rather have (random terrible QB)?"

No, I don’t want another crappy QB. We could have drafted a decent QB in any of the last 2 drafts (drafting McGee is the biggest joke I’ve seen as a Cowboy fan). If we had drafted Brady Quinn instead of trading that pick to the Browns, I think we would be a much better team right now. We need to stop settling for Romo because he can beat the teams he should. All I’ve seen the last three year is a QB who rides a very talented team to a decent record and then play absolutely terrible when he is suddenly counted on in pressure situations. I’ve seen too many games where a sullen Romo talks about his mistakes and how they cost us the game and how he is going to work on his mistakes, and it never materializes into better play. Wasn’t ball security supposed to be a point of emphasis all summer? Why should we believe a word he said last night when he talked about getting better?

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Sep 21, 2009 6:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Take it how it is

We owe ROMO nothing he gave us zero playoff wins and zero rings he owe Jerry Jones for not drafting Brady Quinn and taking a chance on him.

And Jerry Jones as a GM and an owner owes us fans more than what we saw last night. How many fans went out to watch that game? How many fans buy the sunday ticket just to watch every Cowboy game? How many fans buy Cowboys merchandise just because we love them?

All i am saying is right now its bigger than ROMO. We are at a cross roads. THis is the same stuff from last year but there is no T.O. to blame.

We are good we are a darn good team. But the turnovers ROMO supplied burnd us point blank.
