who really wants to win a playoff game? does anyone really care that the ravens made it to the afc championship game? I certainly wouldn’t, especially now that you draft according to how well you do in the playoffs.

I don’t think that winning a playoff game makes you any more or less relevant. What is relevant is getting to the playoffs and getting to the super bowl and then winning that game.

Who cares?

right, but what is the difference between them winning their first two playoff games and still not going to the super bowl when it’s all said and done.

(totally agree, btw)

Who cares?

by Zak on Sep 21, 2009 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree but...

I do think that would take a little pressure off. I personally am all about super bowl wins, just like in college football I care about national championships and not just bowl games.

maybe since Ray Rice and Flacco are in their second year now

the experience of having a pro season under their belt will help them get further.

I do

First, there is experience to be had by getting to the playoffs.

But also I refuse to ackowledge the idea that “there is only one winner” in a football season. Especially when half the nfc playoff games seem to come down to a fortunate play or two.

I have respect for any team that makes the playoffs (aside from those that come from the afc or nfc west), it means in what is in a 16 game season, you more likely than not deserved to be among the best teams in the league.

They nfc playoffs are such a total crapshoot, the nfc representative in the superbowl for a year means ZERO cause these are not consistently elite teams – often they will follow that up with a poor regular season the following year. The reason for that is generally poor qb play compared to Roethlisberger, Brady, Peyton, Rivers.

by foyesboys on Sep 21, 2009 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

that was exactly my point. once you get to the playoffs there is a plateau (in terms of achievement) that happens until you get to the superbowl?

do you think that the eagles would trade 4 nfc championship games for one more shot at the superbowl—you bet your ass they would.

Who cares?

by Zak on Sep 21, 2009 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

yea i guess

but to be perfectly honest, going to the NFC championship 5 times in 9 years shows you were far more dominant than a team that won one superbowl (like the Giants currently).

In today’s league with all the parity, I’m far more impressed by the team that consistently wins and consistently goes deep in the playoffs regardless of final result than the one that has one great year one season and is just a team for opponents to walk over the rest.

even the last two superbowls have come down to rather lucky plays…I know it sounds crazy, but winning a superbowl means far less to me than being consistently great.

There just isn’t enough continuity year to year in this league anymore. At least in the nfc. I guess in the AFC you have that dynasty/heavyweight battle feel among the Pats, Colts, Steelers and Chargers, where it feels more significant.

Manning and Clark

I’ve got Manning in one league where I’m behind, and I have Clark in the BTB league where I’m ahead, but high505 has Manning and Vinatieri, so I need Manning to have a monster night, but only throw TDs to Clark lol. So far so good!

FF can be so frustrating, last week, I started Schaub with Flacco on the bench, so this week I switched them and of course Schaub goes of and Flacco is flaccid. Actually looks like I might manage to win both weeks despite missing on the QB, so I don’t have too much to complain about, but still it would be nice to have a QB go off who is actually in my lineup lol…

I'm usually not abig fan of overemphasizing single regular season games.

But the panthers game will be HUGE. They are a good physical team that will come out with their backs to the wall and their season on the line. 0-3 and its over.

If we start 1-2, with our schedule after the bye…we’d need to play flat out great football in november and december to make the playoffs. Not impossible, but it would be hard.

by foyesboys on Sep 21, 2009 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

McCoy or Mcgee

I couldn’t help but notice the piece about colt being a huge cowboys fan, and a huge staubauch fan. I was thinking dang, its too bad we won’t be interested, but w romo doing so horrible, maybe we will.

I doubt it, and from romos presser it sounded much better than that crappy philly presser. He sounded like he accepted the blame that his teammates played more than adequate but his stubborness, cost his teammates the game. It sounded genuine, I don’t think there is a better alternative right now, so I hope he gets it turned around.

Raf, you say the cowboys scout themselves, doesn’t it seem that they know that when he throws pics they come in bunches? If that’s the case why don’t the pull him for a series, a quarter, a game? Its like finding a benign toomer, cut it out before it spreads.

by TONYINCC on Sep 21, 2009 9:09 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

you run a major risk putting kitna in there

As we found in the 4th quarte, you’re one turnover (say…fumbled snap) away from losing the game.

The Giants would happily put 8 in the box and force kitna to throw on us. There would NOT be a safety 20 yards deep if Kitna was qb.

by foyesboys on Sep 21, 2009 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

They are trying to pile on. Why didn’t they ask this question last week?

Do you think the results would be different?

by TONYINCC on Sep 21, 2009 9:25 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

12,000 responses

I think there are more than 12,000 fans out there. Including those who watch ESPN only because there is no other choice, especially if a game is blacked out……

12,000 haters can easily come from Philly,NY,Wash area….

Throw in Pittsburgh and no problem to get to that result.

Also agree with the throw in hasselbeck/brees into the question and you have a better idea of which team will win due to their QB.

Prime example is Eli. Did he win the SB or was a large part the miracle catch.

Also Mondays game, he played great for him, but their D played a large part in keeping them in the game.

We don’t turnover the ball, run the way we did, and they don’t sniff the end zone as much as they did….

by oldtimer on Sep 22, 2009 6:57 AM CDT up reply actions

because it’s a lame question.

will marc bulger ever win a superbowl? will matt hasselbeck ever win a superbowl? will drew brees ever win a superbowl?

Do you have a keypad...

that has random negative things to spout out at?

Like F1 puts out “Romo will never win a big game.”

F2 “Cowboys will never be champions with Wade Phillips.”

.. you get the idea.

The consistentcy of it is pretty impressive. Most people would get bored with the same song and dance, not you. You got that mp3 on repeat, jammin with the volume at full blast.

Harsh but very true.

by TONYINCC on Sep 21, 2009 9:31 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Wondering,

Did anybody else notice the intensity that A Pierce changed the def alignment on the first Romo INT? I had a flashback to the Ravens’ game last year where they admitted to knowing our calls, reads, calls, audibles or something. Is Dallas that simple minded in line calls? I take no blame away from Romo as I am fed up with the long term results on him, but Red seems very predictable or at least easy to read.

by rocklaw on Sep 21, 2009 9:31 PM CDT reply actions

Pierce was audibling off of Romo's audible, not the original playcall

if I’m thinking about the same play you are. Romo would’ve had to call a timeout becuz he wouldn’t have had enough time to audible again.

by Aaron Novinger on Sep 21, 2009 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Just *isses me off

that they so accurately changed their defense to make the perfect play on a Romo air ball. I mean, they are recognizing Dallas’ alignments and audibles so easily that they can pull that off? Something’s gotta change…

by rocklaw on Sep 21, 2009 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup. It looked like the MLB recognized it and threw the D into a Cover2.

In hindsight, he probably thinks he shoulda called a timeout; but, at the time those are valuable.

by Aaron Novinger on Sep 21, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Weak.

The 90’s boys could tell you what they were going to run/do and then just do it. They were so talented they could get away with it. Not saying that 2009 Cowboys purposely telegraph there intentions, but the talent is not there to overcome the predictability/readability.

by rocklaw on Sep 21, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree

We made most of our yardage with Emmitt , slants to Michael, or Novacek as the checkdown.

Most long balls were sideline high passes to allow Harper a leaping opportunity.

I don’t recall many deep posts or 10 yards from the sidelines deep throws, as the long ball interception appeared to be.

by oldtimer on Sep 22, 2009 7:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe they know Red's tendency

Throw in he coached with them, and I think they know a little more about what he will
do in certain situations.

Remember, he was a Giants assistant for a few years…

one dropped ball on 1st and 10, pretty much forced to run on second, and now you’re in 3rd and long…thats the problem with an offense that can’t generate big plays

by foyesboys on Sep 21, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

What is with all the Wade hate?

He really doesn’t deserve the heat. It is all the players’ fault. He put it on Scandrick and Newman to do their jobs and cover man to man. They couldn’t do that. It was the d-line’s responsibility to get to Eli. They couldn’t do that. It was Romo’s responsibility to at least not lose the game. He couldn’t do that. It was the WR’s responsibility to get separation and catch the ball. They couldn’t do that.

It is really easy to blame the Coach because he is just one guy. But at least in this instance it is the players’ fault. Wade’s D’s always get sacks. You’ll have time convincing me it’s Wade’s fault we are not getting sacks.
