Marion Barber Injury Update

[UPDATED]: The Blue Star Blog reports that Marion Barber will be out for one to two weeks with the injured quad.

In seemingly related news, DC.com says that the Cowboys will sign RB Chauncy Washington to the practice squad. Washington is a speedster, most recently released by the Jaguars, who may be brought in more for return purposes.

Interestingly Enough

Matt Mosley just reported the following about 20 minutes ago

A league source told me Tuesday morning there’s a “50-50” shot that Barber will play against the Panthers on Monday. The Cowboys will see how Barber’s quad responds to treatment over the next few days and then make a decision. Having one extra day certainly helps the situation. But if Barber, who ran for 124 yards on 18 carries Sunday against the Giants, isn’t ready to go, second-year player Tashard Choice will take on a larger role on the offense. When Barber and Jones were out with injuries last December, Choice stepped in and made a very favorable impression.

Here's Felix chance to introduce himself to the NFL

and earn himself more playing time. Hopefully they take him off kick returns too, that scares the crap out of me.

I love Barber, but I’m glad they are going to let him heal up. We are very deep at RB and there is no reason to rush him back.

I kinda agree

that Felix should get more carries any time MB3 is sidelined, but I hope we don’t have a repeat of last year where they didn’t use Choice until he was the only one left. I think Choice should get about 35%-50% of the carries

I wouldn't worry

I’m sure it will be like a 60-40 kind of thing between Jones/Choice. I just think that Jones will earn more carries if he gets the opportunity.

Side note: Carolina just signed a NT to replace the one they signed to replace the starter.

After watching our O-Line destroy the GMen in the run game, I’m looking forward to seeing Felix go off this week, as well as Choice.

I'm really excited about the signing.

That will allow them to pull Felix off of KR if they “promote” Chauncy from the PS. Dude is super fast.

The next question is: who gets cut?

Yeah, I remember watching him play on tv for USC

Chauncy Washington was dangerous once he got through a crease and into the open field. I wonder too why he hasn’t stuck with a team as an NFL player.

That was a helluva find.

Even if it’s a temporary thing.

Anyone care to venute a guess...

as to how much T. Choice will actually be used if MBIII can’t go? Somewhere along the lines of 7-10 carries and maybe a few passes sprinkled in?

To Venute a guess

is a mish-mash of Latin and English that means, “The QB didn’t pick up the FS and heaved up a duck for an interception.” Like: Romo venuted a guess that Phillips was enjoying tea on the play and not covering a WR deep like one would expect.

by Boundforbeach on Sep 22, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

They don't like to use felix too much..

It appears garret thinks of him as a speedster that does best when he is thrown out there when the Defense is used to a slower more powerful back. With that, I think T. Choice will get more carries than that if MB3 can’t go. I’d say he’ll get 60 – 70 percent of the touches. So probably in the 15 – 20 range

by SDTrueblue on Sep 22, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I would think so too

They’ll want to keep their philosophy of using Felix to take advantage of certain situations. Interestingly they’ve been suing Felix a lot more in goal line and he’s done really well.

But I think Choice is a good idea for carrying the load. He seems to get better with more carries. So Delix might get a few more carries, but probably not the “starting” type numbers.

A concern about Felix

is his blocking on blitzes. Which is why Choice is the 3rd down back. We may find out why shortly

It was discouraging

to hear on the Dan Patrick show this morning that Dan Patrick was watching the Cowboys game with Rodney Harrison and Tony Dungy, and they said of Terence Newman that his elite speed is gone. He’s too old and too consistently injured to rebound and he no longer has the wheels he did previously.
I tend to trust their eyes and estimations.
If they can see this on TV, NFL coaches can see this in game film. I have a feeling that Sensabaugh and Hamlin are going to have to play out of their minds. And a pass rush has to materialize from somewhere.

by Joey2zs on Sep 22, 2009 1:10 PM CDT reply actions

After watching the game again with sober eyes

TNew still looked real fast on his tackles. He’s got that closing speed still…just got caught looking on that amazing EZ catch by Manningham.

He looked as fast as ever coming across the field to tackle Manningham on that 3rd down play.

So it begins...

by APerfectStar on Sep 22, 2009 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Strongly Disagree Here

The Speed is still there… T New’s problem on the TD was that he didn’t pick up the ball early enough – classic mistake by plenty of high school, college, and pro corners. After 15 yards, you have to get your head around and use one of your arms to “feel” the WR. T New turned and slowed down, that’s all. On the P.I., same thing happened, if he turns early, he picks it off, instead, he draws the penalty.

by BK Arsonist on Sep 22, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Would have never thought that people would be suggesting that TNew has somehow lost a gear this season.

from behind Romo, you could not see the safety because Hurd and the corner blocked his view the whole way.

I agree with both of you but you could see his eyes light up when he thought Hurd

running down the field wide open. It was an impulse, a bad one, but I see why he did it. He had someone open short too.

He's 6'2" and not 6'5" like Manning, Brady, Rivers, Roethlisberger and others

He passes the ball through open lanes and as such, needs to know where the center fielders are on every deep ball.

Its a good thing we have Choice

Granted he’s no Barber, but after watching him play against Pitt last year, I’m very intrigued to see what he can do again.

hear me out. It’s not because i think he is better than felix, i just think he is more of a work horse like barber. I just really like the way we pounded the giants with barber and then jones came in and swooooooooosh! I guess im saying i would like to see things stay as close to the same as we can get. Last thing i want to see is jones get 20 carries and get dinged up this early in the season.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Sep 22, 2009 3:52 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

It seriously frustrates me that felix is only getting 5-7 carries a game

I think that is totally absurd. He should be getting no less than 15 touches a game not including KO returns IMO, anything less is a complete waste of a 1st round pick.

Summarizing the Dallas Cowboys in two words; inconsistently amazing.

by sublimezg on Sep 22, 2009 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

if his 5 touches

produce 96 yards and a touchdown not including ko’s then that is not waste of a 1st round pick. would i like to see him get a few more touches?Sure, but there are only so many balls to go around. T offense has put up 34 and 31 points with it working just like it is now. If it aint broke dont fix it.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Sep 22, 2009 4:16 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

yea ok but

what if Felix can put up 200 yards with 10-15 touches? The way they’re using him now, we’ll never really know. The saying “If it aint broke then don’t fix it” only really applies when no upgrades are readily available. We may have such an upgrade. Hell, look at Chester Taylor in Minn, he’s still a very productive back. What if they opted to only use Peterson 5 plays a game?? I’d call that a major miscalculation.

Summarizing the Dallas Cowboys in two words; inconsistently amazing.

by sublimezg on Sep 22, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Comparing the situation in Minnesota to the one here is even close..........

Peterson is a big back that is taylor made to handle the rock 25-30 times a game. Felix is not. I guess your right in sense that you don’t know unless you try it but while we’ve got other guys to share the load I just wouldn’t be willing to risk losing him just because i want to get him 25 touches a game. Why risk that when we have productive backs to complement him? I’m with you on the 15 touches a game thing. And the truth is, if Choice wasn’t our third down back then he might get 15 touches a game. But Choice is the 3rd down back because he can pick up a big blitizing linebacker. Felix hasn’t shown he can do that.

by TARHEEL PAUL on Sep 22, 2009 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

also, I've read Felix is better at picking up blitzes than Choice

so If you believe NFL.com and the DC.com on their weights, and if what I’ve read is true, then what you’ve said really holds no water.

Felix

He is a speedster. But people have begun to declare him this massively fragile guy. He has only been hurt once majorly in his career, including college. That was his injury last year. It at least seems that Garret likes Felix as a change of pace home-run hitter. After very capable backs like MB3 and T. Choice (who is actually smaller than Felix) hammer away with an aggressive style … throwing Felix at them it’s hard to adjust to his speed. This remains to be seen if this is really the most effective way he could be used..but we have the luxury of not seeing much drop off with whatever back we have in the game.

Felix will get more touches.. but I wouldn’t imagine more than 10 – 12. I see T choice getting in the 15 – 22 range
