Therapy Post

Wow! This was the hardest I have taken a loss since I was nine years old. Like many others, when Romo threw that deep int to Phillips I wanted his head on a platter. Thankfully I didnt have access to the internet after the game. I read many of the comments and as mad as I was I would have been in the thick of it. It might be best just to make your comment for stress release but maybe avoid reading posts by individuals you dont agree with on a good day. nothing good is gonna come out of being that riled up.

By waiting a day or two emotions die down and more information becomes available that gives a clearer picture. Romos throw infuriated me but when hearing Collinsworth saying that the Phillips was really at an odd, deep location and Romo saying he didnt see him, I wasnt quite as mad.

For me, I dont have a problem when a QB has a bad day throwing the ball. Micheal Jordan was the best player I ever saw(BB) and he had games when he was 4 for 20 shooting with 3 dunks. What I have a problem with is bad decisions. That has to stop or we will see duplicate careers of Kitna and Shaub. Good numbers but with little substance or post season success.

Romo was off on his throwing. When he isnt in sync with Witten you know he is having an off day throwing. Romo and Garrett need to take a veiw from above and see whats working and not working and adjust.  The call really was a good call, but completely un neccessary. Its ok to pound a team into submission.

.

Spencer seems to be everywhere and active. He doesnt have a sack yet but neither does Ware. Comparing him to Ellis is short sighted. Ellis by the end of the season will be fading and look old and tired. Spencer having his first full year of starting should be coming into his own by the end of the year. Remember, we dont need more guys who fade in Dec.

Can we please sign Ware immediately. Most guys step up in a contact year. Ware has always stepped up. I cant help but think signing him now will allow him to focus on playing ball and not on a contract. 90% need the money for motivation in a contract year. The other 10%, its just a distraction. Ware and Jerry need to put this to rest.

I wrote a comment right after the release of TO that this new offense might need 8-10 games to become fully in sync. With the optimism of Felix, Bennett, the new season, the easy early season schedule, and the double TE, I conviently forgot about that post. There is no doubt about the matchup problems it creates. The big plays and the trouble even a great D like the Giants have matching it shows its vast potential. Trouble is its still a work in progress. These guys are still bringing it all together but their are times they still arent all on the same page. EX. Bennett looking for a jump ball and Romo throwing a stop fade against Tampa. Difference,  4 points and confidence/momentum.  Its coming guys, its coming. just be patient.

Leave Flo alone. He is playing well and his 2 penalties were not dumb penalties. The tripping penalty was as smart as Crayton kicking the ball out of bounds. We can ill afford for Romo to go down.

Scandrick, this isnt the 215lb Austin,214lb RW, or the 210lb Hurd. This is the 185lb Manningham or the 180lb Desean Jackson or 190lb Santana Moss. Their first step is lethal. Do not come barreling up there out of control or you will find yourself full time in the slot.  I prefer Jenkins on the outside. He gets his hands on more balls. I like Scandrick just as much but like him in the slot more. No matter what our DBs need to take a major step forward. Newman included. I thought these guys would be  one of our strengths not a weakness.

We went into the Giant game with the intent to stop the run and if we are going to lose it will be on Eli's arm. Well he did it. He played a fantastic game. Maybe his best. Thing is, without those TOs and lucky bounces the game plan would have worked. With the exception of 2 runs we shut Jacobs ass down.

Great post

I mean it, I agree with much of what you said. That was by far, the best I have ever seen Manning.

Can’t argue with much of it. The only thing I hate more than how a heartbreaking loss makes me feel, is having to listen to “half-fans” talk about who we should get rid of and why based on one game. I generally steer clear of anything Cowboys-related (except for BtB, of course) for days after a loss.

Thanks, he was sharp as I have seen him.

When we rushed 4 he took his time. When we rushed 6 he dumped it off quickly. When our CBs played off 10 yards he threw immediately to the WR on the line of scrimmage and allowed them to make a play.

It's the turnovers...

Manning didn’t have any. We almost played like a prevent defense against the Giants this game. We did not go after Manning enough. That is wrong. You have to go after him. This defense can. especially on that last drive Squidlo. Manning would have made a mistake, trust me. We just didn’t keep the pressure when we needed to.

The defense really did not have a good gameplan in this game, and add to that poor execution. It still played good enough for us to win, but again, the turnovers. We will win 100 percent of the games like this, but not with turnovers. Only turnover free football can win the NFC bludgeon battles. You would think that we (our coaching staff) would already know this. I understand that Garrett doesn’t want Dink and Dunk, but how can he not want Victory Squidlo? That is beyond my comprehension possibly. Job 1 when we play Philly and the Giants and Redskins is what? Keep the ball away from them.

All three of these teams do not scare me on offense when they have to drive the length of the field. More times than you may ever imagine, they are just gonna struggle to get a FG.

We, on the other hand, at the end of our drives, punch the ball into the end zone nicely. The problem seems to be, and always has been, going down the field. Our offensive coordinator thinks the pass is the way to do it against these teams.

Suffocating football, that’s what I call it. Challenge they’re defense’s endurance. Run it down they’re throats. They are waiting for the Romo pick, and have a defensive plan to force it to happen. We can’t afford to give it to them. Take that away, and they won’t even be in the game. They will be behind all game.

I really agree with you in principle. I like balance on offense. I like pressure on D.

I try to figure out why we do what we do before going off. Going into the Giants game we thought of them as a team weak at WR and strong in the running game. Many of us went into this game thinking low scoring with Giants grinding it out.

My thinking would be to stop the running game and we win. They dont have enough fire power in the passing and we have good corners who match up. They may move the ball between the 20s but have tendency to bog down and kick field goals.

Truth, their passing game is better than advertised and our corners arent playing as well as we thought. Not pressuring enough allowed Eli to much time but it did virtually shut down the running game. We should have won and though we made some mistakes in evaluating them the game plan was enough to get the job done. The problem is this is a new season and all anyone has to go on is last season and what we think.

I just think we need to clean up the mistakes and mental errors and get a better idea of what we do best and what other teams do best and make the adjustments. I think the more agressive style of D we play is coming. I think we arent fully aware of just exactly how we are going to run our offense. We are still feeling out what everyone can contribute and what their roles will be.

I think we have such high expectations that we forget that this is a new style of offense we have talked about alot, but played very little. It hasnt come together and gelled yet. We are putting up numbers and scoring points like crazy but the truth of the matter its still pretty disfunctional.(3 and out, long scoring play, turnover, long grind out FG,3 and out again) Just give it time to come together in a few games and your hunger will be fed buffet style. Then with the lead and more confidence in the O we will turn the dawgs loose on D. People want it now but just give it a few more games.

Your post just reminded me of something

It’s one of my so-called “NFC east” rules.

“When all else fails, Run”

I’m not saying the Cowboys passing offense is a failure. These debates on the blog have to do with figuring out how to help the passing game become successful. If anything, arguing for the run to be used more is to isolate reciever, TE’s, as well as backs into single coverage. But the pass itself stands on very shaky ground against any team if you just think your gonna go out there and execute. You have to earn that right to execute on a defense. You earn it by showing them your not gonna pass the way they think. There are alot of other offensive plays to use and change them up. Teams are just too talented on defense anymore, and coordinators can scheme well.

But they can’t cover everything. somewhere, on defense, there will be a mismatch. We must exploit that.

And here is a good question: Why did the Giants CB’s play press coverage, and ours didn’t? (notice how I wrote didn’t, not couldn’t)

answer: Their defense played to force the pass, ours played to keep the big pass play from happenning. interesting, isn’t it?

All the more reason not to oblige them. It was a smart trap, baited and all. And our coaches fell for it. They didn’t have to, because every Cowboy fan in the world really doesn’t give a hoot about stats, only one stat is important- victories. Nothing fancy about that. I’m sure everyone would be happy with a 21-10 or 17-10 victory, just as much as a 31-10 victory. But the mistakes…..They undermine your confidence.

The Giants will change the gameplan on defense next time. I know what they are gonna do. Does this coaching staff have an idea of what to do to combat that?

They didnt play press, they played cover 2. They showed press but backed off at snap.

We came up to the line with 2 plays. Our TEs out wide. When we didnt see the matchup we wanted we brought them in and ran. 8.7 yards a carry and 250+ yards tells me we did the right thing.

I dont have a problem with the play calling on offense. I agree with Bishop West. Our execution needs work. Better decisions with the ball. If we have to run 60 % of the time to keep the ball out of Romos hand then we need a new QB. Im certainly not making that call after 2 games. I dont include last year because that team and offense dont exist anymore. I believe in Romo until I dont believe in him any more. I dont know if what I saw was a bad day throwing the ball or bad decisions or both. The fact the he was 13 for 29 leads me to believe he had a bad day throwing. That and the fact that he was missing passes to Witten.
I think he is pretty accurate but a tendency to make bad decisions. I want to wait 6-8 games before I pass judgement on whether he has made progress.

As far as game plans. They were only better because they won. They had no respect for our run game so stacked the pass. We ran for 250+. Thats a good game plan.

We had no respect for their passing game and to much respect for their run game so we stacked the run. They passed for 350+ yards.

Difference in the game, TOs and fluke bounces for them. Their brilliant and we are stupid. Im just not buying that.

Our offense and defense along with our team is still getting their identity. Give us a few more games and an open mind. We havent locked down who we are yet.

I do agree we should have pressed them more on that last drive.

But again, it should have never came to that.

That's right

Because pressing them at the end, we had nothing to loose and everything to gain. It was this kind of game that we needed to survive and come awy with the win. Will the outcome be the same next time? I don’t know, but if Romo has another 3-4-5 interception game against them, then maybe you’ll understand the wisdom of the conservative gameplan. I also do not believe that throwing high percentage short passes to Felix/Tashard as conservative. They make defenses pay. And making a defense react to that would clearly allow you to pass downfield to single coverage. I wonder how Marty B feels right now……

I think the main culprit among coaches is Wade, not Garrett.

You have taken most of your shots at Garrett. Balance is the key to a good offense in my opinion. Im of the opinion if your good at something and weak at the other you will lose late in the year.
Playoff teams generally have good Ds and have the ability to take away what you do best. You better be able to do it all.
We had 29 rushes and 29 passes for perfect symetry. The play calling overall was excellent. Romo’s execution was dysmal. The deep pass wasnt a bad call but it should have ended up being a dump off or out of bounds. I can assure that is coached.
With the exception of Terry, I cant remember anyone not wanting to run more than last year. We are doing just that. You seem to be hitting the panic button and asking for something that has zero chance of happening now.
Relax and give the offense a little time to come together. Screens will come when teams blitz us more. Martellus will get more passes when we see the match ups we want.

Squidlo

I’ve taken my shots at Garrett, true. His mistakes become that much more highlighted by the fact that Romo hasn’t changed his interception situation hardly. The real question that needs to be answered is this then- responsibility. Who is going to step up and say “This happened, and it can’t, I’m responsible, and I’m going to change things”.
Would you say to me that Wade is responsible? I know you probably wouldn’t say that to me, at least I hope you won’t. Wade is not responsible, he’s just going to be the scapegoat. It’s sad, because I like Wade. He’s a great person. But as head coach, I’m not so sure anymore. I have patience. I’ve been reading, and lightly posting on BTB here for years. I’ve not really spoken out on my opinions on the blog here to any great length in the past. I am a member at other blogs on the Dallas Cowboys. I have had alot of patience, and me stating my opinion has less to do with patience, and more to do with just speaking my mind.

If I saw Garrett verbally say something on the sideline to Romo, I would understand where you are coming from. But that doesn’t happen, and it should. Is Tony above being held accountable by Garrett? No. Is Garrett above criticism? No. Is Wade the one to step in and coach Tony? No. Garrett is the only one. He. and he himself, is the one that bears the burden of responsibility regarding Romo. Romo himself won’t be affected by anyone else but Jason as far as coaching is concerned. My shot’s at Garrett are less intended to demean (sorry if it seems that way), and more to just bring to light what has to happen in regards to Tony. No one would be foolish to dismiss the obvious fact that something has to be done about Tony, specifically, his coaching.

I want no other QB than Tony Romo. He has to come thru this himself, and his coaching is what is the real question. His coach has to help him. And I am not talking about Wade Wilson.

Amen also

After a really disappointing loss, I can’t get myself to read anything about the game or the Cowboys. After a couple of days I get back to my old self although I haven’t yet watched the game again.

A couple of things surprised me about this game. 1- The use of Bennett. I expected to see Bennett used a bunch, both split wide & as a target for screens. He was used much more as a blocker this game but of course the running game was what was really working. 2- The Cowboy’s defensive backs had a really bad game & I sure did not expect that. 3- For some reason Coach Phillips didn’t send many rushers except on obvious downs & those were all well blocked by the Giants.

I have never been a big fan of Eli Manning but he played one heck of a ball game. His accuracy & his decisions were impeccable. You also have to give a ton of credit to the Giant’s coaching staff. They came up with a very good game plan.

When I look back on this game down the road, one of the things that will stick in my mind is that, sometimes in football, the ball just bounces your way, or in this case the ball bounced that way for the other team. Manningham’s catch for the TD was lucky. A Cowboys D lineman’s tipped pass going on right to the intended receiver was lucky. The pass intercepted off of Whitten’s foot may have been divine intervention.

I think we put our TEs out there

and based on what they do we move them in and run or leave them out and throw depending on whats the better match up for us. We are moving the ball and more time we will have a better understanding of what we do.

Very good Squidlo97

This kind of therapy is needed for all of us posters that have been here reading for many years, post occasionally, and then explode in disbelief over the insanity of it all.
