Felix is like "china in a bull closet"...and Five Thoughts on the game

I've been doing this every week, so without further ado...

Star-divide

1)       “They were who we thought they were!” Last night was the first time the Cowboys played like I expected them to play before the season: Solid Defense, Safe and Maddening Offense, Improved Special Teams. Last night’s offense was the one we all know and loathe…confusion in blitz pickup, compensatory penalties, bogging down in the red zone. We were good in the red zone in week two largely due to really good play selection. The media is complaining we didn’t call run plays at the goal line, but Romo said they were audibling to passes after the defensive alignment showed that a player would be unblocked if they ran. Teams are begging us to pass at the goal line, because they realize that Romo cannot throw the fade.

2)       Would it be a bad thing if this became known as “Jay Ratliff’s Defense?” Don’t get me wrong: I love me some DeMarcus. But there’s a nastiness about Ratliff, a crazy look in his eye, that is the personality that I’d like to see contaminate the whole unit. And I don’t particularly like “The Rat” as his nickname…insufficiently descriptive. Rats give people the willies, but they aren’t terrifying. Ratliff scares me. Until someone comes up with something better, I will hereinafter refer to Ratliff as “Krazee Eyez Killah.” I could totally see Ratliff barking “I’ll snap off your neck with a crackle and pop…” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCzdEAy8WOw

3)       After T.O. early season production and Twitter craziness, does anyone still think Jerry made the wrong move? I mostly agree with the suddenly insufferable Steve Young that this offense lacks a downfield passing threat. That will occasionally result in games where we pile up 400 yards but score 17 points. But T.O. is just not good anymore. And for anyone who hasn’t read his Twitter page…seriously. Go now. This is the guy’s thoughts in real time, but when he’s trying to make himself look good(!), and he comes off as a total fool. When Brian Dawkins was asked earlier this year if the Brandon Marshall craziness rivaled the T.O. craziness, he said “No…T.O. was way crazier.” Once T.O. “loses respect” for a QB and an OC---and he’s six-for-six in respect losing in his NFL career—he’s simply insufferable. Read his tweets, look at his declining skills, and ask yourself whether you’d re-hire him as our Number One receiver.

4)       Felix Jones leaves me holding my breath every time he touches the ball…and then again as we await the inevitable MRI results. Felix is being compared to Tony Dorsett, but that’s an insult to Felix. When he’s on the field, Felix is not as fast but much more explosive. That move he put on Godfrey last night was straight Barry Sanders, but unlike Barry, Felix doesn’t dance his way into lots of negative plays and can lower his shoulder in short yardage. Still, staying healthy is a skill, and at this point in his career, Felix’s body is like china in a bull closet.

5)       Jon Gruden was so slobbery in his affection for Romo (I half-expected “I love you, bro”) that I think he might be auditioning to coach in Dallas next year. Look: unless we advance to the Super Bowl, Wade will not be back. He’s simply not one of the Top 15 head coaches in football, and precisely no other team would hire him as a head coach in 2010, so why would we re-hire him? Gruden should be higher on our short list than he probably will be. Here’s what I think Jerry’s short list will be, and should be:

WILL BE: 1) Garrett 2a) Holmgren 2b) Shanahan. On a football level, Jerry likes to be comfortable with the people he hires. He treats people like family, and it’s usually reciprocated. (E.g., On the day he fired Campo, he held a press conference with Campo and praised him to the skies!) Lots of media people think Jerry=Steinbrenner, when in fact he is nothing of the sort. In fact, JJ perhaps should be a little bit more like Steinbrenner, in creating a little healthy tension in the building for coaches and players who under perform. Jerry clearly does not want Garrett to go someplace else and be the next Sean Payton. If we win 10+ games, I think Garrett would be the favorite. After all, if the other candidates are also Offensive Gurus, why not hire the guy who is a successful offensive coach that doesn’t require you to shift offensive systems? Now, this all depends on how we finish the year. If we have another late season nosedive, Jerry will need a big PR hit next year—he won’t be able to market Garrett to a demoralized fan base. Remember, with Jerry, it’s always marketing. Balancing football and marketing, Holmgren and Shanahan have both tamed wild QB’s (Holmgren-Favre and Shanahan-Elway, Young) and coaxed career performances out of guys without elite skills (Holmgren-Hasselbeck and Shanahan-Plummer). In this case, I worry that Jerry will balance his PR need with his aversion to radical change and choose Holmgren. Shanahan’s offense is better with nimble linemen (of which we have only one), and Holmgren’s doesn’t require it. Jerry is also closer to Holmgren. I’m worried that a) Holmgren will be 62, and this is now a young(er) coach’s league, and b) Holmgren’s best years were with Ron Wolf, and Jerry is no Ron Wolf. In Seattle, Holmgren feasted on a weak division but still only won more than 10 games once in ten years. Shanahan is younger, and I don’t think it would hurt to transition away from the “huge linemen” model that seems to bite us when their fat asses get tired and under perform in December.

SHOULD BE: 1) Garrett 2a) Gruden 2b) Shanahan. Let me say a few words in favor of Gruden. He’s worked for a meddling owner, but Jerry is nowhere near as crazy as Al Davis. He’s an offensive coach who won a Super Bowl with a defense-first team and built the offense-first Raiders team that went to the Super Bowl. He’s ten years younger than Shanahan and 15 years younger than Holmgren. He’s gotten great performances out of journeyman QB’s Gannon and Johnson. He’s the most intense of all the coaching candidates mentioned, he’d probably work for Jerry (unlike Cowher), and he has the strong personality needed to get the players’ attention amidst the circus that Jerry creates. While intense and capable of instilling discipline through fear, Gruden wouldn’t create the Bataan Death March atmosphere of Duane Charles Parcells. On balance, if we win 9 or fewer games this year and need to clean house, I think Gruden should be the guy.

if MB3 was healthy

we score another TD, easy, so that will help aliviate the 400 yards, 17 point thing, seriously, how were we scoring points in the red zone the first 2 games?

one thing I find funny about all this RW can’t replace TO stuff, while RW probably can’t replace the 2007 version of TO, he may be better than the 09 version.

2009 T.O- after 3 games, 5 catches for 98 yards, 1 td
2009 R.W- 3 games, 8 catches, 179 yards, 1 td

so would our offense be so much better with T.O right now?….and imagine the drama we’d have going on after the Giants game, or if we had ran a game plan like last nights?

That's one thing I love about Roy

He doesn’t seem to bitch and moan if the gameplan isn’t centered around him. He seems well aware that we’re leaning more towards running the ball, and content with that. He doesn’t seem to care at all that he’s a receiver with a lot to prove on a team that seems to put a bigger emphasis on running the ball than passing it to him. It’s a breath of fresh air, compared to T.O.

Will his numbers come close to T.O.‘s numbers in his prime? Absolutely not, but he’s done a pretty good job so far and has displayed a MUCH better attitude than T.O. ever has here. We honestly don’t NEED a superstar, as I think we’ve shown over the last 3 games. WR-by-committee is perfectly fine to me, especially considering how well we’ve been running the ball.

Great points!

My friend and I were laughing about Gruden’s praise of Romo and Witten. We were like, “he’s faxing his resume to Jerry right after the game.” I disagree that Garrett should be the number 1 option, though. Right now, he is in charge of the offense, and the confusion and other things that you pointed out fall on him.

Don’t love your nickname for Rat, but I do love the idea of this being his defense. I have given the guy crap about not protecting the LBs well enough on runs, but I appear to have been wrong. The guy is a rampaging monster and I love his " Hulk Smash!" dance.

I thought Felix was more Sanders than Dorsett, too, but mostly because he does not have the speed that TD had, although his lateral quickness may be even better. Of course, I don’t remember Barry getting caught from behind too much, either. Please learn to stay healthy, Felix! Unfortunately, this team’s strength and conditioning coaches or training staff or whomever don’t inspire too much confidence that that will happen. It seems like half our team is constantly nicked up.

No thanks...

A highly overrated coach whose teams constantly chocked in the big games. He had the one great year (out of 15) in Pittsburgh but otherwise his teams must have blown home field advantage at least half a dozen times.

Cowboys believe Felix Jones to miss 2 weeks

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cowboys players “seem to think” that Felix Jones (knee) will miss two weeks.
The players obviously aren’t doctors, but this prognosis isn’t hard to believe. Jones has a knee strain and underwent an MRI Tuesday. Expect word on the results by this afternoon. With Jones looking doubtful, especially on a short week, the Cowboys will likely let Marion Barber play against Denver in Week 4. MBIII was chomping at the bit Monday night, but they didn’t clear him. Sep. 29 – 12:38 pm et

insult to Felix???

being compared to Hall of Famer, Tony “Hawk” Dorsett, is an honor for FJ especially considering he hasn’t accomplished squat yet.
TD was a gamer; not injury proned like I’m afraid FJ is; and while not as big as FJ was faster and as quick if not quicker out of his cuts.
When FJ surpasses 10k yards then you can compare him to one of the great pure runners backs who ever put on a jock.

Looking into the past

Felix was very disappointed about his toe injury last year because he had never had a history of injuries. I think we are really just seeing a bunch of flukes and bad luck. I won’t say he is injury prone until he becomes like Stanback who would break like a toothpick.

Unreallized Potential

A friend of mine said it that way best… ‘this team is a group of unreallized potential’ – and to me that is ALL coaching…
i would like to see:
1) Cowher
2) Gruden
3) Shannahan

Roy Williams is just as good, skill wise, as T.O. is right now…

I hold my breath when Felix touches the ball, until he gets up without a limp.

Choice is such a luxury, what a great 3rd option at RB

Special teams are solid, like the rookie kicker, that helps a ton, wish we had any sort of threat to return a punt… Crayton is reliable but is NOT going to beat anyone…

Big off-season moves

I did a little bit about this in a recent post about Terrence Cody vs. a veteran like Richard Seymour. Terrence Cody won the popular vote but I believe we’ll be going after him in the draft. Also we will get a punt returner. If there is a guy in this draft like Devin Hester, then Joe D will do everything to try and get him. Depending on who the coach is next year we will either go defense or offense in the first round. If it is an offensive minded coach I think its either going to be another lineman or a WR first, if its defense it is going to be either a safety or a D-line guy (most likely Terrence Cody).

Great post, funny style, too

ROFLMAO to the Larry David clip, one of his most absurd, which is really saying something.

I forget which commentator last nite said TO now stands for ‘Too Old,’ but he’s spot on.

Agree w poster above(I know who he is)that Felix has a loooong way to go to be on par w Dorsett. Big similarity is ability to accelerate and cut at full speed, but FJ does get caught from behind and so far, is nowhere near as durable.

Any coaching discussion has to include consideration that we will have to replace HC, OC and DC if Wade leaves and Garret isn’t named successor. Although any coach will want to hire his own staff, this is DAL after all and that’s a lot of turnover.

Holmgren/Shannahan belong in the discussion, Cowher does not. I think he’ll be a bad fit w JJ and he’s a little over-rated anyway. Gruden would be an interesting alternative. I like his energy, passion and the fact he doesn’t coddle players. He could use a little Jimmy Johnson by tempering his approach to the superstars. As far as the players tuning him out, you could make the same case for BP and Shannahan at their last stops, even Pat Riley as well. You can’t sustain that type of tenor indefinitely.

What is wrong with Cowher exactly?

besides the fact that he’d probably want to be GM. He’s relatively young (52), is defensive-minded and – most important in my opinion – he’d get the respect of players and be able to motivate them.

That’s what this team needs – discipline and direction. For some reason it didn’t work with Parcells.

Frankly, I am not too excited about the possibility of Jason Garrett as head coach. I am, though, extremely jealous of the Jets for getting Rex Ryan…

by DavidH22 on Sep 29, 2009 2:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Emotionally, I'd have a hard time with any member of the Ryan family coaching the Cowboys

But you can’t argue with what he’s done. So far.

My problem w Cowher is his teams have tended to underachieve. His only championship winning team put together a remarkable string of road playoff wins. But PIT had a couple of home AFC Championship games and could not close the deal

Cowher used to do this funny thing in the playoffs.

When I was reading Jimmy Johnson’s thoughts on Romo, it reminded me of why Pittsburgh used to struggle in the playoffs under Cowher. Jimmy said that sometimes for big games, you need to simplify your game plan rather than make it more complex. Under Cowher, Pittsburgh often used to try to add several new wrinkles in big games to catch the other team off guard, or whatever, and got away from what got them there in the first place.

Lots of it is Media

What I want to see is Wade’s rumored “explosion” in the locker room at halftime monday night. Players said he really got after people and some where surprised but many weren’t. Romo also admitted to blowing up a little. I want to see those, but you know why you never will? Media never allows a person to publicly change their personality or style. They will make sure that wade is always “Mr. Stay Puft Marshmellow Man”. Therefore you will never get to see him blow up, just the little things like hey thats a good win, then some clapping, then lets do it again next week. That is why I hate the media, they shape things to how they are.

Why is it that both of Felix's injuries this season.....

….Have occurred at the end of plays? As I recall his injury in the season opener came after he got helicoptered on a kickoff return.

As for the Barry comparison, let’s remember there were plenty of times he got cornered by defenders and they had him partially wrapped up only he made it look like his jersey was coated in crisco. His game was so much more than juking defenders.

Romo's fade to Roy was perfect,

Roy just dropped it. Bennett was supposed to run towards the pylon, where the ball went, and Bennett screwed up. I don’t know what he did, but it wasn’t right. That’s why he kicked the ball and Romo was consoling him after the play.

I think what really happened is

Bennett read the coverage, saw the blitz, and “rightfully” broke off his fade route to give Romo a quicker and safer target inside the DB. I don’t think Romo read the blitz, and didn’t account for Bennett adjusting his route, therefore he threw to the original “fade route” spot, which looked like it was way over Bennett’s head by several yards.

Man, if that guy can stay healthy…he will be special. If he can stay healthy ONE SINGLE game, hes gonna put up ridiculous numbers. I don’t know how many players i’ve seen with his moves and acceleration that aren’t afraid to lower their shoulder.

I’m shocked at the number of people still saying we made the wrong move cutting TO…what exactly did TO bring us at the end of the year? what is TO bringing to buffalo? The guy has struggled for quite a while now=.

Ratliff is a beast..to me this has been Jay Ratliff’s defense so far. Hes an incredibly player, considering hes undersized and faces constant double teams. There isn’t a better NT pass rusher in the league, and he consistently is getting into the backfield on run plays too.
