Will the Cornerback Rotation End for the Cowboys?

Mike Jenkins may have proved enough on Monday night to make Wade Phillips reconsider his plan to alternate starters at the right cornerback position.

"I thought Jenkins had a good game. That's to be determined tomorrow really," coach Wade Phillips said of evaluating the rotation system. "We're going to discuss it."

Make the jump for more.

Star-divide

If Jenkins is to start again, this would be a move towards defensive consistency rather than a slight to Orlando Scandrick. Scandrick had a quiet game against the Panthers, but that may be a good thing. He really seems more comfortable in handling the slot duties.

A factor to be considered, Phillips said, is that Scandrick plays on the corner in regular packages and moves to the slot in the sub-packages used on passing downs. Jenkins plays corner full time. Phillips said it's been more difficult than expected for Scandrick to make the switch in mid-stream.

A pass rush could certainly help everyone in the secondary. While DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer are still hungry for their first sack, we got to see one of the backup OLBs take full advantage of his playing time.

Wade Phillips said Victor Butler played in five snaps against Carolina. Let's see five snaps, two sacks and a forced fumble.

The other pass rusher Phillips was hoping to see play had some bad luck.

Curtis Johnson was active for the first time but he aggravated his hamstring and did not see a defensive snap.

A set starter is most important

I think in order to have continuity opposite Newman then we have to have a set starter. Although Scandrick impressed me more that Jenkins last year. I think Jenkins is playing better this year. However Jenkins did get beat on the only TD pass Delhomme threw in our last game. that receiver had a good two steps on him at the goaline…

OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE….

I agree that consistancy is the key especially since the Nickel Corner is where Scandrick really shines playing the nickel is a bit more difficult then the corner, most of the time you can’t jam the Receiver so feet placement and technique is very important in order to stay with your man. Scandrick in my opinion has better technique then Jenkins which makes him a better fit for the slot roll moving from the edge to the corner during the game can hurt him in developing those skills as a nickel back..

Upon further review… I think it was more of a good throw then Jenkins getting burnt. At the snap of the ball the Safety shaded to the middle and Jenkins was dropping straight back. So it seems as if they were in a cover 3 with the corners and safety each taking a third of the field. If the Safety stayed home the seam wouldn’t have been open but he bit on the pump fake and left it wide open. It only looked like Jenkins was beat but he was coming over from his side of the third trying to make a play but was too late.

I watched it a couple of times and thats the way it looked to me. Although Raf does a better job of reviewing film so he may have gotten a better take on that.

Yep

I thought the same thing after seeing the replay. I don’t think Dawson was Jenkins’ man. Looked like he was just coming over to help.

I’d like to see Wade mingle in some of those CB blitzes that worked so well last year. Anyone remember when Newman/Henry would come rushing in from the blindside at the QB? It seemed to work well the few times they did it.

on the TD pass

It seemed like Delhomme looked Hamlin off and Hamlin never came over to help so I don’t think that was all on Jenkins.

Jenkins should start, Scandrick in the slot

I think this is playing out. Jenkins is a bit more consistent with this playing

Jenkins opposite Newman and Scandrick in the slot. Scandrick is better suited for the slot at this point in his career.

Jenkins

I think Jenkins looks lost and confused most of the time…he was lucky to get that pick, with muhammad not doing anything to stop him. He got roasted by gmen and will get roasted by others, especially the eagles receivers if he does not step it up. His tackling is atrocious, and I cannot see how anyone here honestly thinks he is the answer, especially with sensabaugh and hamlin also playing terribly…maybe we should re-think this campo thing.

You saw Scandrick in the Giants game?

He played way worse than anything Jenkins has done. On that TD allowed, Jenkins shares responsability with the Safety (Hamlin) who should have given him deep help, but Hamlin followed Manning’s pump fake and took himself out of position.

Well

No secondary holds people to 0 yards passing. I say holding them to 7 points is pretty good. Granted Muhammad sucks, but Jenkins did a good job on him. He just needs to learn how to wrap up and tackle and stop trying to prove so badly that he’s physical. Maybe the criticism from last year’s Giants game got to his head.

CB’s should wrap up! Leave it to the big guys to hit hard..

That pick wasn’t lucky he had his man well covered. Everybody knew Jake shouldn’t have thrown that ball but Jake, thats why Moose was like wtf? when he saw the ball coming in the air. He had already given up on the play.

I will say we need to teach all of our corners to dive at the ankles stop trying to grab guys waists because to many people are spinning out and running for more yards. If you go for the ankles even if spins he can’t go completely around if you got a headlock grip on his ankles. All he will do is jump around on one leg while the LB comes to whip him out.

I think he can be the answer with more experience because he has very good athletic ablity… If Moose didn’t push him in the back he might have brought down a 2nd pick. He has very good recovery speed when the ball is in the air.

tell me about it. thats exactly wat i wanted to say. wat do r safeties bring to the table. hamlin had one good year with us. jenkins and newman avoid tackling. i do like campo though. he is only playing with the cards that are dealt to him.

Jenkins

Has an INT, and had another negated by penalty, plus another pass vs TB that he probably should have picked off, got his hands on it. He’s still learning and the only way he’ll get better is to let him play.

You can already see the play-making skills are there. The more time he gets at RCB the sooner he’ll develop into an all around player.

It wouldn’t be so bad if Hamlin would step it up. I put a lot of the blame on him. He’s supposed to be the captain of the secondary, if guys are confused, he’s not getting the job done. Not to mention his invisible man impression this season.

So it begins...

Corners

We should stop trying to draft corners and trade for receivers. We should trade for good corners and draft receivers

by Love Me Some Me 1 on Sep 30, 2009 10:06 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The corners are alright...

For example, Asante Samuel is a really good CB, but he gets toasted every once in a while, like the New Orleans game and first Cowboys game last year.

The CBs indeed need to improve and broaden their relationships with the tackling dummies… And they should add audio to the dummies: “Shoulder tackles don’t work, you have to hit, hold on and bring down”. They should also sleep while hearing the record.

I just hate when they throw their backs at guys.

I know they’re built to backpedal, but that doesn’t mean to tackle like that.

Keep Jenkins out there, so he continues to develop and gain experience. He will get plenty of chances to tackle if he’s starting.

Its easier to hit on CBs in the draft than WRs.

WRs have have higher chances of being a bust. Draft CB and trade/FA WRs.

T-New

I saw Newman in the slot on Monday. Was he just following Steve Smith around?

by blee on Sep 30, 2009 10:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Indeed

That was his job Monday night. And after he got settled in, Smith was smothered the entire game. I’m not surprised he started trying to break short routes outside.

T-New seems to always frustrate Steve Smith. Smith got ejected the last time they played because Newman was all over him.

Overstating the obvious.

But Mike Jenkins really needs to work on tackling.

Scandrick had a bad game against the Giants

But in my opinion he’s consistently outplayed Jenkins until this week. Jenkins stunk in the preseason and against the Giants too.

job by Butler. I know he won’t be doing that every game, but still, nice job.

His first play was a sack

And he wouldn’t have been on the field except that Carolina made the mistake of substituting so the Cowboys were allowed to sub as well. Looked like Butler was shot out of a cannon that first play. The RG hardly touched him.

It seems like

The coaches may know what they are doing.

Alot of people around here were wanting Scandrick to start over Jenkins and rightfully so. At the time he outplayed Jenkins periodically.

Now it seems Scandrick is having his difficulties while Jenkins is playing better.

Anyhow, both kids are alright and should be fine players once they get into a groove.

Scandrick confirmed that Jenkins will start @ Denver.

From Rob Phillips’ blog:

Orlando Scandrick told reporters in the locker room that Mike Jenkins will start again Sunday at Denver, and Scandrick will continue working in nickel situations.
[snip]
“I’m going to embrace my role and hopefully it will help this team,” Scandrick said. “I know it will. We won last week and hopefully we can build on that performance.”

I think Scandrick has class

his words ring like a true professional.

I think he is going to be one of the better nickel corners in the league. This is not a demotion, IMHO.

Agree

I like Scandrick’s attitude, and would rather see him made the permanent nickel back. All the switching with the young guys slows their development.

So it begins...

Jenkins should also had 2 picks in the Bucs game. One he dropped or the WR made a good play and one was called back for a penalty.

Jenkins gambles a little more for picks so sometimes you will see him beat pretty good but he is a ball hawk. that is sometimes the price you pay.
Dont worry about Scandrick, he is good and will take Newmans place one day.

KICK ASS every day!!!

Good its better to have one set...

And Jenkins broke our INT drought so good for him, I do really like Scandrick but he will play plenty this year

I would like to see the same person start opposite Newman for a couple of games. Newman is still a good corner and looked a lot better against Carolina. Scandrick was to inconsistent against the Giants. He had trouble tackling and then broke down in coverage a few times. Jenkins seems to be a little better at playing the ball.
As for the pass rush I have been more impressed with Spencer when he’s in coverage and not rushing the passer. Butler seems better at rushing the passer but it is just a small sample size. I also wish they would leave Carpenter on the sideline. He has done nothing this year to justify playing in meaningful situations. Ware also looked better at getting to the passer against Carolina.

I've never paid close attention until this year
I also wish they would leave Carpenter on the sideline. He has done nothing this year to justify playing in meaningful situations.

The first couple of years I really didn’t get involved in the “bust” talk. He was just a non-factor to me. This year I"m watching him closer. He is really bad and brings nothing to the table. He may get replaced during the year.

You said it… I really never paid attention I knew his story but never really bothered with critiquing him much. This year I’ve started as well since he seems to be seeing a decent amount of playing time. And…

Good lord. He is pretty terrible on some big plays. Most guys show a lot of upside but still struggle sometimes and get beat (Jenkins etc.). There isn’t that factor with Bobby, he just never stands out as doing well and always makes glaring mistakes. I don’t care who takes his place, but it needs to be done fast.
