A Few Questions With a Broncos Blogger from MileHighReport
Greetings Cowboys fans! Guru here from Mile High Report checking in as we get set for Cowboys/Broncos week!
I guess, for some in the media anyway, this is a big game. For me they are all big, especially home games, and I am looking forward to the Broncos facing the challenges that the Cowboys provide.
These two teams certainly have a long history together, between the Super Bowl 30+ years ago, to Tony Dorsett, Wade Phillips and even the Thanksgiving Day OT game a couple years ago(Ron Dayne memories).
Anyway, I thought I would stop by and answer any Broncos-related questions you might have. I'm not into smack-talk, there will be plenty of posts on both sites for that I imagine, but if you have serious football questions regarding the Broncos I'd love to read them!
So, got a Broncos question? Fire away! I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered! I'd appreciate a REC so that the post can stay at the top for the week!
Here's to a great week of cross-blogging and to a great game on Sunday!

How is Elvis Dumervil being used
in the new Broncos defense? I haven’t been able to watch him this year, but looking at the stats, he’s off to a great start (much better than Ware).
Any analysis on how Moreno is progressing would be great as well.
One last thing, where the hell is Royal? He seemed perfect for the Welker type role in McD’s offense, but he has been non existent so far.
i agree
royal kill my fanest team too but gaff and stolk are more scary so far

ANSWER
Dumervil – When Elvis was drafted by the Broncos I was a bit surprised because I thought he was a better fit as an OLB because his strength was his speed and long arm-reach. While only 5-10, Dumervil’s reach is that of a man 6-4 or so. When he played DE, it was a lot easier for offensive linemen to engage him, using their size to overpower him at the point of attack. Now, since he is standing up, Dumervil gets a good push, allowing him to gain leverage on his opposition.
What has impressed me most about Dumervil is how quickly he has picked up the other facets of playing OLB – pass coverage and run defense. He has been able to quickly and effectively switch from a pass rusher to tackler in the middle of a play. He is also in great condition which allows him to play at a high level for 60 minutes.
MORENO - You can see with Knowshon it is only a matter of time. The injury in the pre-season, coupled with his 7 days hold out, slowed his progress but he is making up for lost time fast. Knowshon still relies on his athleticism a bit too often, but he is a load to bring down and his ‘pass pro’ is really improving each week. Knowshon, along with Correll Buckhalter, combined for 35 carries and 198 yards last week.
ROYAL – He is perfect, but to give credit to opposing defenses they are doing a good job of doubling him, and chucking him off the line, making it tough for him to get into his routes. The Broncos have gone to the matchups that are left over – usually getting the ball to Brandon Stokley and Jabar Gaffney. Now, with Brandon Marshall coming on, I expect things to open up for Royal a bit.

Thanks, very cool of you to do this.
I expect to see Flo getting a lot of help with Dumervil on Sunday, in the form of TE’s and RB chip blocks. If they leave Flo 1 on 1 with Dumervil it will be a disaster, a guy like that is kryptonite to our OT’s.

I respectfully disagree. Flo will eat him up in the same manner as Trent Cole.
I would let Flo block him one on one all day.
Ich bin ein Berliner--JFK
Dumerville is good.
He’s second in the league in sacks with six. If they don’t keep a eye on him, this could be one of those games like AZ last year where the Cards passrushers were all over Romo.

A healthy flo has really never had those games
The guy has consistently shut down pretty much everyone, including speed rushers like osi and trent cole
Flo can't last the whole game, especially in that mile high air.
Doom has almost all of his sacks in the second half. He wears you down and then nails you late in the game. Also, four of his sacks are on third downs. So, he’s clutch, too.
Look for the boys to be okay the first half and then get killed by DOOM in the second half.

Guys like Osi and Cole
are large pass rushers that Flo can handle just fine, as long as he get his hands on them. If Flo gets his hands on you, you are done. He might not be able to get his hands on Dumervil, because he’s so tiny and quick.
We shall see though, I hope you are right.
Alright Jelly Doughnut.......
I -1 your -1 Respectfully. And all I can say is, we can only wait and see. Either Doom is going to get a sack, or he is going to push Romo into another sack by getting close. It will happen. Doom is just…..too good.

Has he demonstrated the same leadership and enthusiasm that we wanted to smack out of him when he was an Eagle, or is he taking his time to earn his team’s respect first?

Brian Dawkins has been worth every penny – and more – to the Broncos this season. I was watching his press conference today, and even 1300 miles away I was intimidated by him. He is the ultimate professional and along with Champ Bailey, Andre Goodman and Renaldo Hill, has provided stability to the back-end of the Broncos defense.

Dawkins: The Poet
I hate “rah-rah!” types. I hated seeing Romo attempt to stoop to that level in week 1. It was painful. So cliche and meaningless. I guess it’s supposed to show heart or something of the like?

I have a question about the Defense
Much of the credit for the Broncos going 3-0 this season goes to the Defense. I was curious what has really stepped up on defense and really boosted the units play?
I was also curious how much of an impact Brian Dawkins is having on the D?
our
serondry is underrated and r fields is underrated

ANSWER
There has been improvement on all three levels of the defense. Up front, Ronald Fields, along with Kenny Peterson and Ryan McBean, have been what they need to be as 3 down-linemen. They are taking up space, holding the line of scrimmage, and not allowing the OL to get to the Broncos linebackers.
At linebacker, all the publicity goes to Elvis Dumervil because of his hot start, but Andra Davis has been a huge surprise in the middle next to D.J. Williams. He seems to be rejuvenated by getting out of Cleveland and is playing the run better than I have ever seen him. D.J. Williams is a tackling machine, and Mario Haggan was voted a caption by his teammates – which shows the type of respect he has earned.
In my mind, however, the defensive backs have been the biggest upgrades, especially at safety. Brian dawkins looks to be playing as well as ever, and Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman were instant upgrades coming in from Miami. Then, of course, there’s Champ Bailey.
There are a ton of ‘star’ players, but each of these guys is a professional that knows how to do their job. So far, it’s working.

RB question
how’s it been going with the RBs? I saw that Buckhater had a nice game against Oakland … is he the #1 right now?
Sugar ... water .... and, of course, purple.
ANSWER
He gets the start, and it seems there is a rotation of alternating series for C-Buck and KnowMo. Peyton Hillis had been lining up as the goal-line back, but he is nursing an ‘upper-extremity’ injury and didn’t practice today. LaMont Jordan has been the 4th quarter guy, coming in to grind out first downs and kill clock.

3-4 and what else?
I’m looking at your team depth chart… Ronald Fields and rookies behind him, Mario Haggan and Robert Ayers at OLB (other than Dumervil), Andra Davis at ILB and Ryan McBean at DE… These combination of guys make me think that your team isn’t using the 3-4 as the main and only scheme… For example, the Cowboys so far in this season have used the 3-4 and the Nickel and Dime with 4 man fronts. In the past they have used other 6 and 7 man fronts like 2-4, 3-3 and 46.
And what’s your team best pass rush scheme?

ASNWER
As j-man eluded to, the Broncos have shown a number of looks this season. Several times, the defense looks to be in a 5-2, which might explain their success against the run. With the strength of the defense in the backfield, Mike Nolan is pressuring the QB and stopping the run by keeping 8 or 9 in the box at times. It isn’t a gimmick defense by any stretch, but it is filled we pre-snap movement, show-blitz, etc, forcing opposing quarterbacks to have to decide who is coming and where the pressure is coming from.

Well......
All I can do is point to Cinci…..even if you don’t think we should have won. (Debate for another time.) We still held them scoreless for 59 minutes. Have the Steelers done that? Has anyone else done that?
I would say yes our defense is absolutely for real, for the first time in years.

Moreno/Running Game
I was a huge Moreno fan coming out of the draft, and felt that the Broncos were right in picking him to solidify their running game. Between Moreno/Hillis/Buckhalter they have a solid group of backs. And Orton is the QB you you tend to need a solid ground game, as he isn’t going to throw you to a championship. I guess I am wondering how the running game is doing?
Also, do you feel that the Broncos at 3-0 are a legit contender, or do you feel that they have had the benefit of easy opponents and blind luck(Bengals game). As a Dallas fan, I can’t say we have faced world beaters at all(barring the Giants), but you can only face the teams on your schedule.
And best of luck(but hopefully no victory for you) for the game this weekend. And I hate you for bringing up that horrible OT game from years ago. How in the hell we allowed Ron Dayne of all people to run all over us I will never know.
Running Game
So far so good. The team is 4th in the NFL right now, and ran for 215 yards last week. Perhaps most importantly, the team is averaging 4.7 yards per attempt. Not as gaudy as the Cowboys, but solid nonetheless.
As for whether or not the Broncos are a contender that will remain to be seen. We need look no further than last season to see what being 3-0 means as both the Cowboys and Broncos started 3-0 only to see the season go up in smoke. I think allowing 16 points in 3 games is real regardless of the opposition. Last year the Broncos gave up 86 points in going 3-0. Big Difference. No one talks about the Ravens being soft, or playing a weak schedule, yet they have faced KC, SD and CLE.
In the end, winning is what will determine if the Broncos are for real or not. Each week is a statement game. I think both teams will answer a lot of question about who they are this week, at least until Week 5. ;-)

So I'm over scouting out the MHR
And I notice that a lot of Bronco bloggers are extraordinarily confident that Denver will handle the Cowboys. Not just playing up the Broncos’ strengths, mind you, but I see tons of comments about what aspects of the game the Cowboys suck at.
Some of those are flat out wrong, and some of them can be explained. So I guess my question is…are you prepared for a rude awakening on Sunday?

I wouldn’t expect any less over here this week. Trust me, educated Broncos fans know how much of a challenge this will be. The Cowboys are easily the most talented team the Broncos have faced this year. That said, the recipe for success is still the same. Stop the run, avoid mistakes, and head to the 4th quarter in a position to win the game. After that, we’ll see what happens.
I will say I feel better about this game being played in Denver.

The Cowboys are leading the league right now
with 193.7 rushing yards per game. I know that Felix Jones is out for the Denver game, which hurts us and helps you. But even with M.Barber, T.Choice and our mauling OL, the Cowboys are very formidable in the run game.
If our OC Garrett was looking for a weak spot to run against your front seven, in your opinion, where would that weakness be?
ANSWER
All along I would have said right up the middle, but the Broncos have been solid inside. I still think that is your best bet, and biggest strength. With the size advantage up front, it would be smart of the ’Boys to attack the Broncos straight on instead of trying to string them out. The strength of the defense is the speed, and the best way to neutralize speed is to run right at it.

I have to say
My one observation…..and I know I am not nearly as knowledgable about this as you John, But in every game I’ve seen….(all 7 if you count pre-season) I have seen poor tackling on the run to the outside. I think that we are slightly weaker to the short outside run than the sideline or up the middle runs. but thats just my opinion.

I got tix
Woo hoo!!! My wife just surprised me for my birthday and got me tickets for this weekend. I am stationed at Ft Carson and have been in serious withdrawal up here with no Cowboys coverage. This blog and streaming The Ticket are my only outlets so I am totally stoked!!!! My question would be is it always this myopic here in CO with the Broncos with quality of wins not withstanding? I am sorry if that made no sense I can barely type from the excitement of the tix…..
Used to be CowboyinIraq at BSR, but I am not in Iraq anymore, so that didn't really make much sense........

And now that I have looked it up
What exactly do you mean by shortsighted? Denver is a town that is always extremely passionate about the team, even when we are losing……so I take it to mean that you are surrounded by a lot of enthusiastic fans, and think they are exaggerating what they should be feeling. (if I understand you correctly) And I would say that isn’t that how all fans should be the majority of the time? exspecially on the cusp of a possible 4-0 start when everyone touted them as the next detroit? Just food for though. If I totally misunderstood, please correct me.

I actually think what I meant....
was, it seems that even the media and casual fans are falling all over themselves about this team when the quality of wins were not really all that impressive. Although the Cowboys wins weren’t either I guess I am just used to the TX media when it comes to covering football. It is bash or be bashed it seems, but I definitely see your point and would probably be reacting the same way if I cheered for any other team but the ’Boys. See you sunday!!!!!! I am so stoked about this game, first one I have been able to go to since I joined the military! Used to have season tix before then so you can understand my pining for live football.
Used to be CowboyinIraq at BSR, but I am not in Iraq anymore, so that didn't really make much sense........
Absolutely
And if you notice, the media has been rather lax in their assesments of us, even with the 3-0 record. But as far as TRUE fans of Denver go…..I can only truly speak for myself. Even when we were being thrashed last year.. I was still just as excited and crazy about my team as I am right now. The difference is that now we have a defense that is arguably one of the best we have had since 98.
Also, I TOTALLY understand your excitement. I went to one live football game last year and it was DC v. NYG and was not very exciting for me, but this year I will see DC v. Den live and I am STOKED!!!!!!

Who do think will win
Yeah I know you will say Broncos but be honest and say who might say. Im bit nervous about the cowboys this will be important to me because I want us to be in a nice postion of 3-1
Let me add to that.
We both want our teams to win. So how do the broncos win, and how do the cowboys win in your opinion? I haven’t really watched the Broncos play, so I won’t analyze you guys. But my keys for the Cowboys would be:
1) Keep running. If we can put up 250 against the Giants front 7, we could still put up 175-215. With Felix out, I understand our Home run threat is out. But I think Barber(who will play, I have no doubt) can rip some big ones. He seems to handle smaller defenses effectively(think Green Bay last year). And Choice will add his 10-15 carries for good gains.
2) Run to pass. When Denver attempts to stack the box, Romo has the potential to rip the back field apart. Look for a lot of play action and post routes.
3) Shut down defense. If we play like we did against the panthers, then the game is ours. Newman and a safety shut down Marshall, Jenkins plays Royal closely, and stuff the run, as we have the past two weeks.
If anyone wants to add, be my guest.
by Alexcomestokill on Sep 30, 2009 6:59 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Okay, here it is.
Broncos win if the run game gets going. We know that the cowboys defense is suspect to the pass, but can we run it on you? With the fourth ranked rushing offense in the NFL, we have to run it in order to keep the offense balanced and in rhythm. On defense, we must stop the run first. If we can force the cowboys into passing situations and get some pressure on him, it will force Romo into more mistakes.
Cowboys win if they can run and attack the middle with the TEs. The WRs will be ineffective with the broncos experienced secondary, but TEs could be successful against our LBs. Witten and Bennett are dangerous and the one problem that the denver D has shown is covering the middle of the field. If the TEs have a big game, the cowboys are ahead of the game.
Also, the run game. If the cowboys can exploit the middle of the 5-2 defense, it could be successful. So far, teams are averaging less than 2 yards up the middle of our defense, but with larger Offensive linemen, the cowboys could exploit the middle.
Again, broncos win if we establish the run and keep balanced offense and if we can stop the run and pressure Romo.
Cowboys win if they run the ball up the middle effectively and attack our LBs with TEs.

ANSWER
For the Broncos to win, the recipe is pretty simple -
1 – Limit the Run – The Cowboys are #1 in the NFL in rushing, so this a no-brainer. Notice I said ‘limit the run’. If the Cowboys are as good a running team as they have showed so far then stopping the run completely is out of the question. What the Broncos need to do then is force the Cowboys to earn every yard. Keep the yards per carry to around 4.5 yards, instead of the 6.8 the ’Boys are averaging now.
2. No Mistakes – That has been the Broncos strength so far. They have turned the ball over only twice this season(2 fumbles) and Kyle Orton has yet to throw a pick. It is imperative that the Broncos not give the Cowboys a short field or easy points.
3. Force Mistakes – Conversely, the Broncos need to force a couple of turnovers themselves.
One thing I will say, I feel as confident as you do if the Broncos force the Cowboys to pass. The strength of the Broncos defense is the DBs. If you feel good about taking Marshall and Royal out of the game I feel the same about Bailey and Goodman taking Williams and Crayton out as well.
That leaves Whitten, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Broncos double him(under-over) to try and limit him.

Another question from scouting MHR
Lots of Bronco fans are claiming that Denver holds the edge in coaching i.e. McDaniels + Nolan > Wade + Garett. Of course, I would expect no less from Denver fans, and I’m sure that Dallas fans would claim the opposite.
However, there also seems to be a sentiment that McDaniels hasn’t fully opened up his playbook yet. I find that particularly hard to believe considering that Denver has played three games. Surely, McDaniels has tried everything he has at his disposal to win those three games apart from some gimmicky formations/plays. Or should I believe that McDaniels has purposely held back waiting for a worthy opponent like Dallas? Really?
And kudos on the diplomatic answer above. Try to inject some venom into this one.

No Offense, (and no pun intended)
But the play book has been mostly vanilla. The new offense, personnel, and coaching requires reps with a reduced complexity. Does that mean that after 7 games the Broncos still aren’t ready for his advanced plays? Probably not, but McDaniels probably felt that he could beat the first 3 teams without giving away the farm. And I don’t think Dallas is on the short list of teams he is worried about studying Bronco film. This game will be as complex as he decides it needs to be… no more, no less. I don’t think that Dallas requires an unusual play-list to be beaten. What is needed is the players we have need to do what they have been assigned, and well. From what I have seen of Dallas, the same is true of them. I don’t think there is any significant disparity in talent or physicality. Where I do see a potential disparity is at QB and Head Coach. I have watched Wade for a long time, and while we have had less of McDaniels to observe, he seems to make up for quantity with quality. Orton seems to me to be doing less to hurt himself than Romo does. Not that Romo is horrible, but I think it could play into this game if it remains close.
I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.
Shaquille O'Neal
I think there are 2 reasons
for the vanilla offense. First, it really is a complex offense. It took Brady some years to really master it, and although Cassel was the backup for 4 years, it still took him half a season to really get comfortable running it under game conditions. I think that McD is not holding the playbook closed to ‘save’ it for worthy opponents, but is slowly adding more and more complex pieces to the puzzle as the offense shows its ability to master them. I would guess that the whole playbook won’t even get opened this year.
A second reason is McD’s stated preference for very specific game planning. He looks at each team and plays to their weaknesses. That means that one week we will focus on the run up the middle on smaller linemen, and the next week crossing patterns to take advantage of slow LBs, and so on. Sure, all teams do this to some extent, but McD is so meticulous about it that its called the Amoeba offense. He did it at NE for several years, but I’m guessing there were things he wanted to do that Belichik wouldn’t let him do. He might do it now.
Sorry about the lack of venom. I bite harder at other sites, but on these SB Nation sites, we all love football. So, I talk football here. I go to some of the other forums for my smack.

This answer is much more sensible and convincing
McD is not holding the playbook closed to ‘save’ it for worthy opponents, but is slowly adding more and more complex pieces to the puzzle as the offense shows its ability to master them. I would guess that the whole playbook won’t even get opened this year.
So it begins...

I wanna know what your
Back-up plan is when Dallas Defensive front shuts down your Running game?…Orton is surely not going to try and air it out is he?…I believe that our secondary will very effectively be able to cover BMarsh, and that leaves you with very few options doesnt it?…FEAR THE STAR

Calm down even as a Cowboys fan how do u automatically say we are able to cover a man who had 100 receptions years in a row????
We have been suspect in pass coverage for a long time
ANSWER
What do you mean by “Air it out”? If Kyle Orton has to throw the ball 50 times, or something crazy like that, the Broncos will likely lose the game. Do I think Orton cannot throw the ball downfield? Of course not. He can and I would welcome that challenge.

Well he only completed one pass
over 20 yards last season, so I don’t know if that’s such a good idea. His passes tend to float on him.
its not as simple as that
If we can shut down the run without putting an extra man in the bx, that would be nice. If we can’t, we’ll need 8 in there, which means we better get to orton, cause royal and marshall are two really good receivers.
I’ll put it this way – our cbs have had trouble tackling guys like Manningham so far. Royal excells at that stuff.
And Marshall, headcase aside, is one of the most talented wrs in the league.
How are the Broncos special teams?
This has been one of our weaknesses for years, but it is finally starting to become a strength for us. If this game is close, as I expect it will be, special teams could be the key. Who wins the battle here?
ANSWER
That is a great question. From a kicking standpoint, Matt Prater was just named the Special Team Player of the Month, which bodes well. Not only has Prater been solid with long-range FGs, he is tied for the league-lead in touchbacks. The best coverage unit is one that watches the return-team kneel down in the endzone.
As for the return game, the Broncos are still searching for someone to grab that role by the horns. Peyton Hillis, Eddie Royal and LaMonth Jordan have returned kicks this year, and Royal has been returning punts.
A question for you – Was Felix Jones returning kick-offs? If so, who will be back there with him out of the game?

Dallas has used Scandrick and Austin, but they will probably favor Austin he has more experience.
Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!
Also a good question
Felix Jones has spent some time back there, along with Miles Austin. Look for him to be the primary return man. While not as explosive or dynamic as Jones, he has proven to be an effective returner back there.
And I can hear you on the touch backs. We were last in the league last year with 0, and thus far, we are tied for the league lead as our rooke KO specialist David Buehler also has 7 TB’s.
Another big boost for us has been the return of our Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar. Great on hang time and directional kicking. His absence was huge for us last year, and he has drastically improved our coverage from the end of last year.
Punting will be Crayton, but if the punt is deep in broncos territory then they will bring out Newman in the hope that
his speed will result in very good field position.
Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!
Does your defense start our with 8 in the box
to stop the run? or do you drop back and play a cover two zone? My guess is 8 in the box with a lot of man to man.
ASNWER
There has been alot of 8 and 9 man fronts – though not necessarily designed to stop the run. It has been to show the quarterback a lot of different looks. There is a lot of pre-snap movement and different guys stay and drop each play.
To help stop the run, the Broncos have been in a ton of 5-2 alignments, more than a traditional 3-4.

I have been hearing reports that head coach Josh McDaniels is finally willing to allow Brandon Marshall to be a focal point in the offense?
Do you think the time he missed, coupled with the thought, that he might have lost some respect and timing with his qb (because of his absence) will allow him to return to his pro bowl form? He was very dangerous the last couple of years and I am wondering, because I have not seen any of the games if he still is the weapon he used to be.
Let me take that one rio...
…I, like most of my fellow Broncos fans, until recently, didn’t even care if Marshall EVER took another snap as a Bronco. His antics had us completely fed up. But, alas…McDaniels seems to have shocked the kid into submission. Although I’m not super impressed with his performance so far, he is coming along. I think Brandon understands his position (in his life and our offense), and will continue to improve.
As a matter of fact, I’m predicting a breakout game for Marshall this week…sorry your pass D is kinda porous.
Prediction:
BRONCOS: 24
COWBOYS: 14 (90+% OF OUR ALLOWED TOTAL ALL YEAR) props for Romo…he’s a stud

I like nolan as a def. Cord. But to think our offense will be confused or shut down by denv. D. I’m not so sure, our O. Has been looking at diff. 3-4 fronts with very good talent, so to think with your team just switching to a 3-4. I think your O. Would have more probs. But it should be a very good game with 2 very good teams….sorry to drag this out in half thoughts but I also thought denver would be dead last in their div. So what do I know…

we also had a half full of penalties

I'm ready for that butt kissing since my

thanks JB
for reaching out to us flat-landers and providing insight into Sunday’s matchup. Yours is a classy organization with rabid fans; a nice combination.
You have to be scratching your head though on the Cutler for Orton deal; one that I think the org will regret.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"
Not really scratching my head
“The trade” has been discussed ad nauseum on lots of Bronco sites. It was not a straight up trade Cutler for Orton, and so you have to look at the trade in toto. It was Cutler and a 5th for 2 1sts, a 3rd, and Orton. Many are calling it Cutler for 2 1sts and a 3rd, and Orton for a 5th. In the 1st, we took Moreno and Ayers. As we needed defensive help, the smart money says we would have taken defense if we only had one pick, so we think McD would have taken Ayers with the Denver pick. Then, we traded next year’s #1 pick to move up in the 2nd round and take Alphonso Smith, our rookie nickel back and heir to Champ Bailey. We actually traded our pick (at Seattle’s request – they think Denver would yield a higher pick next year than Chicago’s). We still have Chicago’s #1 next year and so we are rooting for Chicago to give us a high pick. And then, we traded Chicago’s 3rd and our 3rd to move into the 2nd and get Richard Quinn, our 3rd string TE. So the trade was actually Cutler and Johnnie Knox (who they took with our 5th) for Orton, Moreno, Smith, and 1/2 Quinn. We won’t really know how well we did until a few years go by and we find out how the draft picks turned out.
Here’s the Kool-Aid side of the intangibles:
1. McD wants someone to run his offense like he says to run it. Cutler is a gunslinger and tries to make something out of nothing. Sometimes he can, sometimes he can’t. That is not how McD wants his QB to play, so he assumed Cutler would not be a good fit for the scheme he envisioned for Denver. He wanted someone that would take what the defense was giving and throw the ball away if nothing was there, not to make risky throws, cut turnovers to a minimum, and create long, time consuming drives that eat the clock and wear down defenses. Orton met that definition; Cutler did not.
2. McD wanted to build a team that was team-first oriented and played down the individual. There seems to be some dicrepancy as to whether Cutler is that type, but there were clues. Cutler demanded that the OC stay after Shanahan was fired. Cutler reportedly wanted some say in who was hired for the offense. And there were some reports that he was distant and aloof during games (he sometimes sat alone on the sidelines at games). It is far from concrete, but that seems to be the rumor. By all accounts, Orton is the ultimate team player.
So there you have it. Orton ran the spread at Purdue well enough to start 3 bowl games. He was drafted by Chicago and that was a bad system for his skills. Cutler’s skills are actually a better fit there, and Orton’s skills are a better fit in Denver. It is entirely possible that both teams benefitted from this. As a Bronco fan, I think we’ll see in a few years that Orton + Moreno + 1/2 Quinn = Cutler + Knox, and that Alphonso Smith was the gravy.
But because of the duplicity of picks in the rounds, the techical trade was Cutler and Knox for Orton, Ayers, 1/2 Quinn, plus a first round next year. But in any case, don’t consider it the Orton for Cutler trade. It wasn’t.
Wherever you go, there you are.
Cowboys fan here
Broncs fans, I hope your team plays a great game Sunday, as long as my team wins!
I didn’t follow the drama closely and I know that winning cures all ills, but I really expected the Broncos to be in disarray this year, not 3 and 0.
Before the team got off to such a good start, were the fans generally wanting to run JMcD out of town?
"He has a peculiar felicity of expression." John Adams
Maybe I'll give this one a shot.
I think there were a lot of fans who were still in love with Shanahan so to them, McDaniels could do nothing right. And I think there were also a lot of average fans who didn’t understand the inner workings of football well enough to comprehend what he was doing. I’ve got to admit that I was in that group. And all the intensely negative stories from so many main stream media sources didn’t help.
Fortunately for me, some of the excellent minds here at Mile High Report are much deeper thinkers and were able to enlighten me. Unfortunately for most of the rest of the Broncos fans, they weren’t members of MHR so yes, many of those wanted to run him out of town immediately if not sooner. They were, as I’m sure most of the rest of the NFL, surprised to see the Broncos get out of the starting gate so well. And now, we hear less and less about firing him. I think McDaniels has now earned at least a grace period from even the most ignorant Broncos followers.
Funny what a little winning will do.

I apologize for that last phrase.
It was unnecessarily harsh and. I assure you, out of my usual character. What I should have said is that there are Bronco fans who will never be satisfied with McDaniels, but he has begun to earn the respect of most fans.

All I've learned so far from this, and the other Bronco threads is that....
Denver fans are almost as homeristic (this is a word) as Dallas fans. Their enthusiasm reminds me of how a lot of us fans were last year, and we all know how that turned out.
Summarizing the Dallas Cowboys in two words; inconsistently amazing.
I think a lot of it comes from a yearning for people to understand the talent on this team, misguided as it may be.
People have been riding this team all offseason, talking about how terrible Denver would be. For months, broncos fans have felt, not ashamed, but a little timid about coming out and stating how the MSM was wrong. If broncos fans, especially those at MHR, talked about the broncos surprising people, they were criticized and called homers and called an idiot.
Now that the team is 3-0, the broncos fans are getting a little bit more brave. Naysayers are giving reasons why the broncos aren’t as good as the broncos fans think. So, a lot of the bronco fan’s “enthusiasm” stems from frustration about being repressed for 8 months and feeling disrespected by the MSM and fans of other teams.

enthusiasm and yearning are nice and all
But it feels like you’re trying to convince us how great your team is in hopes that perhaps we’ll concede, which in turn will reinforce your beliefs that your team may actually be as good as you hope. In short, it sounds like you’re trying to convince yourselves, not us.
I speak from experience by the way, lot’s of it. Prepare for impact.

You gotta look at the overall Picture. I will tout a couple of players on the team at any given time….but come game day…..Denver does the talking, not me… ok I talk alot during the game….but….you get the drift.

Just answering the questions I’m asked. The Broncos are what they are, and they have a very small margin for error. That said, at what point should fans/media, etc STOP looking at last year as a baseline for what will happen this year??

Morton wasn't mentioned?
That’s a travesty. The Broncos owe a lot to that guy. He was one of the toughest and bravest football players, not just QB’s, ever to play in Denver. In my book, he’s still the second best QB ever to play here. Without him the Broncos don’t go to their first Super Bowl. Sure, the Orange Crush was a top two or three defense, but they still needed some offense and Morton’s rocket arm and tough, old pro leadership were exactly what the Broncos needed. It was just too bad they had to meet up with your Doomsday Defense.

Good thread
What i find amazing is how no one outside Dallas fans know what the Cowboys really are, above “the strength of the bronco’s is the DB’s”. Who cares, we don’t throw to wide outs anyway, we throw to tight ends and running backs, we use mis direction and draws with a mauling O-line and two tight ends that can also double as wide outs that leaves you guessing.
The Cowboys are a different animal. 12 package is not your normal offense and the broncos have seen nothing like it yet.
Most fans may not know who the Cowboys really are,
but I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that Josh McDaniels does and he and his coaches have already taken the Cowboys actual proclivities into consideration.

Question: 2 TE set
Much of our success on offense this year has been out of the 2 TE set using Witten and Bennett. This allows us to pass proficiently and employ a power running game out of the same formation. Both Witten and Bennett line up at any place on the field in this formation and generally they are mismatches no matter who is assigned to cover them. I am wondering how you feel your Defense stacks up against this, and what personal package could we expect to see in order to counter it?
2nd question:
Our offensive line did a great job picking up rushers during the Giant game and an equally poor job during the Carolina game. Your Dline is much smaller and quicker then our Oline. How much pressure in the form of blitzes do you expect your team to use during the game? What type of packages (blitz specialists etc) should we be looking for? Usually we do not send more then 5 people to rush the QB, has your team followed similar trends?
Yes
We will occasionally throw Champ, or Dawkins in the mix, but typically its a 5 man rush, and thats all we need most of the time. We are more prone to the Coverage sacks because of our DB’s. I would recommend watching out for Romo getting happy feet when he can’t find a target. This is not to say it WILL happen mind you…..its simply my take based on the season so far. Your o-line is bigger, but Doom is small compared to normal OL’s and Tiny compared to yours…..he’ll be like trying to hug a bar of wet soap. Quick and slippery. If you can tie him up though…..you will be fine overall.
oh and I expect much pressure in the form of 5 man rushing.
