Stanback goes to New England.

Jason La Canfora, of the NFL Network, reports the New England Patriots have signed free-agent WR Isaiah Stanback (Cowboys) to their practice squad. The team is planning to move him to quarterback.

--------------------------

Now watch. They'll use him in the Wildcat and he'll light it up. I do wish him luck though. I was hoping he could be good for us. It was stupid to try and move him to WR anyways.

He will never make it as a WR so might as well use him as a gimick player....

he will never amount to squat who cares…just glad he is done tying up roster spots on this team.

Let them pay his medical bills

then we’ll see.

It's amazing how we view things

If Oakland/Cincy had taken him, it would’ve been viewed as they were taking our castoffs. New England takes him and all of a sudden half of the Cowboys fans are lamenting the loss because the Pats saw something in him that we didn’t.

Just Curious...

There are 5 posts above you… none of them lament the loss…

I also thought the same thing you did… and Stanback does drip with potential… but the reality is that we found 5 WRs we like better.

Good luck to Stanback, I hope he finds a niche in this league.

Well

My comment was based mostly on contact with my friends, but it seems to have been backed up by all the comments below this post. I just think it says something about the way we view things around here.

He's a great player for PS QB.

He can simulate the wildcat and mobile QBs. Of course, Belichick will probably turn him into a 4 time all-pro.

nice!

Belichick might actually have a new wrinkle of his own in mind for the wild-cat…

New England will probably turn Ike into a star.

Maybe he just needs a staff that can really teach him how to play the position. No better place for him to be.

Talking about at quarterback

When his name was called, I thought the Cowboys saw him a Romo’s future backup. I was suprised they wanted to move him.

I never went back and looked

Were his measurable decent as a QB? I don’t even know what kind of system he was in in college.

No way Carl

He wasn’t an accomplished passer.

The guy actually has a cannon for an arm

too bad we didn’t try looking at him as a QB earlier. From what I remember he was actually doing relatively well his senior season at Washington before going down with an injury. If that injury never happened he probably would have been taking in the second or third round as a QB.

by quincyyyyy on Sep 6, 2009 9:32 PM CDT reply actions

I really don't know, what exactly does it tell you?

For me:

1. Mimic opposing offense’s wildcat
2. Practice wildcat, improve at wildcat
3. Wildcat + Speed + Arm … is a good thing

maybe he'll use him againt miami and see if they can stop it..

They will bust out the wildpat and line Brady out wide with taylor and marony and stanback in the back field..

Belichik is Crazy

If you want a QB, draft a failed minor league baseball player. Trying to convert a college QB to QB is asking for heartbreak

by I_miss_Switzer on Sep 6, 2009 11:47 PM CDT reply actions

Do you know anything about bellichik?

Did you not notice the guy he had returning punts in the preseason? He was a college quarterback and he returned one for a touchdown. That isn’t just luck, because bellichik is constantly doing that. If he can’t find a way to use this guy I doubt he will play anywhere.

Tony Romo off in dat hole, Watch roll and watch him throw, Watch him lead dem cowboys to the super bowl, now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys!

Thanks for the cross examination though.

by I_miss_Switzer on Sep 7, 2009 1:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I knew it

I knew that someone would pick him up and I was thinking it would be the Pats. With as much as people spoke of his ATHLETICISM, it made sense that Bellichek would pick him up. Its the perfect coach for him to go under because Bellichek is great at finding how to utilize whatever talent a player has. He will probably be a good player and we’ll all be asking hey! Why did we let him go. Stupid move! But realistically, we had players on our roster right now that are better than him in all areas so we couldn’t possibly find a way to use him or get him game experience. He just didn’t have the chance or the ability to do it with us.

Lets see him get off their practice squad before we speculate about any impact he might have for another team.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Sep 7, 2009 2:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah really..c'mon....

He can’t even stay healthy so makes you think that will change over there? He will never be a WR in this league. They are going to have to use him as a QB to get anything out of him.

by Boyzfan94 on Sep 7, 2009 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

watch him become a star

not really, i doubt it. What exactly are the pats doing at the qb spot? Its like they’re making the most unexpected moves possible. They cut Oconnell and everyone is surprised, but we hear “o its ok they have walter whose more experienced, etc.”…then they cut walter. Leaving them with an undrafted rookie. Now they sign stanback.

As a couple of people have said here, it gives them a good guy to practice against for the wildcat. But I just can’t see his value for them beyond that. The pats are the LAST (or maybe second to last) team I can imagine using the wildcat, with brady under center. Any time you take the ball out of his hands, you limit your offensive capability.

by foyesboys on Sep 7, 2009 3:54 AM CDT reply actions

yup

it makes a lot more sense that they want to practice against it than run it themselves, and thus that stanback is on the PS.

by scottmaui on Sep 7, 2009 4:47 AM CDT up reply actions

What are the odds?

I’ll take bets from anyone who wants to wager. The only role he is going to play is some gadget kind of thing. Who is the last guy you know who went from college QB to converted WR for 4 yrs, converted back to QB and became anything? The answer is, he has zero chance of ever being an NFL QB. Returning punts and kick offs? Sure, that and even some gadget wildcat role. I’d rather use the roster position for someone else. Dallas already has enough roster spots devoted to single purpose guys (KO specialist, long snapper, 3rd QB).

by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 7, 2009 8:33 AM CDT reply actions

And btw

I wish the guy luck. I’ve never been one of those people who personally dislikes a player because he’s a disappointment on the field. I hope he can earn an NFL paycheck for a while.

by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 7, 2009 8:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I am generally the same

Nobody wants to not make the grade.

He may have been better served to have stayed at QB the whole time.

I always thought he was a reach for a 4th rounder – and that is on Jerry, not Stanback.

by I_miss_Switzer on Sep 7, 2009 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I never liked the Stanback draft pick as you can tell....but I agree 100 percent with that statement...

The worst thing for his career was trying to convert to a WR. Instead of wasting the last 3 years trying to learn a new position he might have been able to turn into a decent 2nd or 3rd string QB. This was on Jerry I agree…this was his failed project. That pick couldve been better served at another position.

by Boyzfan94 on Sep 7, 2009 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

It's easy with 20/20 hindsight...

All Stanback had to do was stay healthy and he would have been better for the extra time / experience … nobody could have predicted how things were to unfold. Matt Jones and Ronald Curry are two recent success stories with this transition, so it’s not that far a reach.

For where he was drafted I would say not…He is pretty average……

by Boyzfan94 on Sep 7, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

potential? who cares.

Besides being injury proned he got a case of the yips in the last preseason game. He couldn’t handle the pressure of competing with a rooking free agent named Ogletree.

by angie'sdad on Sep 7, 2009 10:55 AM CDT reply actions

im all for him doing well in fact...

I hope he excels in the wildpat. I think if he didn’t run so straight up he wouldn’t get hit so square….wow I go from one thought to the next with no breath in between….I root for most excowboys until they play us then I want them to get a broken collarbone….ala emitt smith…

They won't use Stanabck in the wildcat in NE

Belichick is no fool and taking Brady off the field at any point is dumb and foolish.

Wildcat is for teams that don’t have franchise qbs.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Sep 7, 2009 11:46 AM CDT reply actions

Just found it!

Somebody may have mentioned this earlier, but WTH…

From DC.com:

Stanback qualified for the Patriots practice squad because he had never had an accrued NFL season of nine game appearances. He played in two as a rookie and eight last year before going on the IR with continued shoulder issues.

Guess that shows we coulda put him back on there. Guess they really didn’t want him…WR, QB, KR, whatever.

The season begins in 3...2...

by Aaron Novinger on Sep 7, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, but it wouldnt have stopped NE from grabbing him from the PS either...

Wade knew someone, maybe NE was interested in him so it was pointless putting him on the PS..

3 years without a single season of 9 game appearances?

He should refund his salary to Jerry.

They'll use him to run the wildcat in practice

to give the starting defense some reps in preparation for miami

by BigE on Sep 7, 2009 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

He actually could be a Raider QB

They only care how far downfield you can chuck it. They don’t care about any other QB skill. Stanback can chuck it as far as anybody but Russell.
