Cowboys, Igor Olshansky and Bobby Carpenter, discuss trying to stop Vikings RB Adrian Peterson.

Defensive end Igor Olshansky said Peterson combines the best qualities of the Cowboys' top backs: powerful Marion Barber and speedy Felix Jones.

"He's tough and physical, but he's also got that breakaway speed," Olshansky said. "We've got to keep him from getting to that second level."

Even though Peterson has seven fumbles this season, Dallas won't try to strip him. The Cowboys are more concerned with wrapping him up.

"You have to be sure with your tackles," Carpenter said. "If you don't have guys in the right position, he'll just outrun them, run them over or juke them."

In their only regular-season meeting with Peterson, Dallas held him to 63 yards and one TD on 12 carries in a 24-14 win Oct. 21, 2007. Twenty of Peterson's yards that day came on a scoring run.

I was at that game in 2007

one of three I was able to attend in Texas Stadium… maybe that is why I think that Chris Johnson is a better back, because I saw us shut him down completely outside of that 20 yard gain.

He’s the truth… but the truth normally isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.

Here’s hoping we can shut him down again.

I think the Cowboys will concentrate on shutting him down

first and foremost and then getting pressure on Favre second. If we get beat Sunday, it won’t be by A.P., it will be Favre having a great game.

Let’s just hope Romo has a better one, and I think he will.

Favre doesn’t scare me, never has never will. Especially with the way Mr. DeManthony Spenliff is playing right now. That’s right… they have become one like the Borg Collective

Not sure I agree

The Vikings have become more of a pass-to-establish-the-run team over the latter half of the season. I think I’d concentrate on the following:

  1. Keep Favre in the pocket
  2. Make sure to wrap-up AP
  3. Put Jenkins on Rice and over/under Harvin.

Agree completely............

Favre can still burn you passing. Don’t think for a second that he can’t. What makes Rice so scary is (1) he’s tall and physical (2) he’s fast

Look how they struggled against the Bears in the first half when they tried to get AP going. To be sure, we’ll need to stop or contain AP, but they’re a pass first team at this point I think.

I think we need to approach Harvin like Jackson….

BTW, met Desean at the Borgata in Atlantic City last night. He was playing craps right next to me…..had some conversation with him…….really a nice kid and smaller than I thought…he dumped 2G’s in 5 minutes like it was nothing..lol…He wouldnt say it, but I think he is pulling for us in the NFC…

I think he is a very good back

and in 2007 do any of remember the QB they had then? Tarvaris? Culpepper? All I know is the QB was sucking and we stacked the box against them all game long and it worked. We can’t do that now and that makes him more dangerous.

For some reason he doesnt scare me.....

I think Favre and his receivers can cause way more damage……also Jarred Allen is a guy I would preffer not to see.

To be honest I think the Vikings present the biggest challenge before the SB. I don’t think neither New Orleans nor Arizona is a better team than the Vikings. Hopefully we’ll get to find out first hand.

you guys have got to be kidding me

there are so little elite runners in this game and well we haven’t faced that many this year if at all. Peterson is a beast and thinking he won’t make a difference is just foolish

"When people talk about Super Bowl dynasties they mention the 1970's Steelers, 1980's 49ers, 1990's Cowboys and the current New England Patriots, but nobody has dominated the Super Bowl like Anheuser-Busch. Simon Noble

by dubious on Jan 12, 2010 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

he'll make a difference, but he's not beating teams

he’s just making the highlights. the vikings are winning games the same way as we are. establishing the pass, keeping you off-balance with the run, and then forcing you to pass in the 4th quarter while they beat you up with a hardnosed RB.

by bulldog jeeper on Jan 12, 2010 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

we'll see who's foolish after the game......maybe he'll make a diff with one of his fumbles.

The key to win this game to me is to rattle Favre and make him uncomfortable. Peterson is not gonna run on three downs for 10 yards everytime…He might do it once or twice but againt our defense he aint gonna run free.

by ManTab on Jan 12, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

I just see him busting one or two big runs

but I am hoping he doesn’t

two big runs of 15 or 20 yards he might have....

This is not the same guys and the same coach who gave up those huge ones against baltimore last year. 2 runs of 30 yards aint gonna beat us unless the ofense decides to take the day of which I dont will be the case either.

Put Favre on the ground 2 or 3 times in the first half and we can win.

by ManTab on Jan 12, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

I was at that game and well

this defense is not far off that same team…….Spencer was in the game. Sensi was not here so he is different. Same for Igor. Not sure if Jenkins was in or not but that was our base defense as they only had one receiver out wide. They just flat out ran over us………And to make matters worse there was a lady about 10 seats away yelling the same d*** thing about 70 times. “You have to win the game” she said over and over loudly……..I kept thinking does she feel like they don’t know this? lol

Look at the teams we've faced in the last 4 weeks

Philly x2, skins, aints. Not one plus running back among them. With a dual threat offense, this is a big test for Wade.

I think that this will put more pressure on our D than they’ve seen in a month. Stop this team and start the doomsday talk.

in 0 yardage and negative yardage runs. ADP is a bigger stronger Barry Sanders-

as much highlight reel as Barry was, did anyone ever fear that they’d lose because of him?

ADP isn’t the focus.. hell, he ain’t even as swaggeriffic as KDP.

as much as we thought he was a hater, he is really a die hard Cowboys fan that turned on the team when we signed TO… a lot like numerous other Cowboys fans. He has been the ONLY national voice backing the Cowboys quality this season.

Don't be so quick to judge

Skip called Dallas to win the East in preseason, said Miles would be the new deep threat of the team, and has been hot on Dallas all year long. In fact, the only time I remember him wrong this year was against the Saints, but that was when it was assumed Ware would be out(and Skip said that when he made the pick “If Ware doesn’t play and I don’t think he will….”

Peterson

I’m not overly concerned about him beating us really at all. I am sure he is going to have some good runs, but Dallas has a “larger” defense in terms of size to somewhat neutralize that advantage of his, and they really have been good at stuffing the run in the last couple of years. I am far more concerned with the quick slant routes across the middle to the likes of Rice, Harvin, etc. We also kept him in check before when the offense relied more on him.

I'll live and die with number 9....

And I think the worst of it was during week one when this defense was still trying to establish itself. If you look at the last two months really, this run defense has been awesome.

But we haven't faced an elite rushing team all season

I don’t think the Panthers backs were completely healthy when we played them, and that’s the only team we’ve faced that has shown a consistent running game.

by Joon on Jan 12, 2010 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

100 yards to a single rusher

this stat just isn’t too relevant anymore. Basically, we didn’t play any of the 5 teams that rely solely on 1 back.

Our run D is really good though

by foyesboys on Jan 12, 2010 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

I think the real concern is

we’ve been able to make teams 1 dimensional. They were either not that good at running, or became less interested in running as we built leads.

I'm not losing my memory, I'm living in the now
