Run up the score? Yes they did. And Brooking is right to be mad.
Did the Vikings run up the score against the Cowboys on Sunday night by throwing late in the fourth quarter while up by more than 20 points?
Never in the history of the NFL has a team scored on a pass in that situation. So the Childress children decided to rub Dallas' nose in the dirt and emphasize a Vikings Victory.
So obviously - historically proven - the Vikes wanted to run up the score.
All those who claim that it is part of being a 'Professional' football player are mistaken. Would you also agree that the Patriots were just getting an advantage by operating outside of the spirit of the rules when they filmed signals?
Did Mark McGuire do anything wrong when he took steroids before they were put on the MLB banned substance list?
Now as yourself this, would you be cheering the Cowboys if they were up by 20 and ran up the score late in the game against a non divisional rival?
It was a petty move, and was lacking in the spirit of the game, just like the Patriots actions, and just like McGuire's actions.
There are no voters to impress Brett. Hand the ball off and walk off with your victory. Running up the score against this version of the Cowboys won't help you erase the memories of the whupping they put on you in the nineties.

I don't care about it
Remember the last time we got blown out to end a season, we came back this year and took it to them 3 times, next year we might play them twice so if we get similar results, I’ll be happy

McGwire, with a W
Just sayin’. For future reference and what not.
I agree it was in bad taste, it was a little bit of a low blow. However, I don’t think it compares to the other two examples you provided. This was something the Cowboys could have avoided by simply executing better; the other two examples are cheating, if not cheating by definition in the rule books then by cheating themselves, their fans, and the game in general (this coming from a die hard STL Cardinals fan).
I didn’t really mind it, maybe the Cowboys did, and maybe they damn well should. Because quite honestly, the way they performed at times in that game they almost deserved it. I just hope they use it as motivation for the future.
by tyhall on Jan 17, 2010 11:15 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Thats why I used those examples
there is no rule that says you can’t run up the score. There was no rule against what McGuire or the Patriots did. Well, maybe not the Patriots.
What the Vikings did was a punk move. looks good on them.
Maybe,
But my point is that ultimately someone was cheated by those other examples. Whereas there isn’t really any difference in the matter whether the score is 7 pts different or not. And again, it’s McGWire.
by tyhall on Jan 17, 2010 11:39 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Who did McGwire cheat beside himself? It was legal ..........
or rather it wasn’t illegal
That's probably enough that he cheated himself
As a fan, and as a young kid at the time I could care less. But a lot of fans of baseball feel cheated, and I can understand their sentiments. Also, it wasn’t banned in baseball, but they were, I believe, still illegal.

One thing
We can be mad about it as fans and on lookers. We can say its classless and all that. It looks bad when a player says it because it just sounds like whining. I agree it was classless but Brooking should not have said anything about it.
yeah I agree on that
I understand him saying something to Favre on the field but dont talk about it to the press. Nothing to gain from that.
It wasn't uncalled for with a short field.
They had 4th and 3, play-actioned it, and Favre threw a TD. I would’ve done the same thing if I was Childress. Now if they threw deep with that lead, then I would’ve condemned that call. But there’s one thing I can say. Next season rematch against the Vikings.
with no timeouts for Dallas? If they run the ball the playclock keeps winding down
only one reason to pass. To run up the score. The Vikings – as skittish a team as I have seen – needed the extra confidence boost i guess.
It was 4th down
if they dont get the first on a running play the clock stops due to change of possesion
It's classless to say the least... But these guys are paid to play 60 minutes
We have no reason to complain… Let it be fuel to our fire next year. Hopefully Jerry takes from this game that we need 2 safties and a LT hoping free takes over Columbos spot
The Vikes had a right to be pissed
All week the whole world was telling them how they had no chance, how it was all about Ware and Spencer and how we would smash them. I would hope that if I were in a position to do what Childress did, I wouldn’t, but at the end of the day, they were just letting out some hostility. Its a game and our guys are paid a lot of money. They need to go home angry and remember this feeling next season.

We got embarrassed last year in the final game
And that resulted in a Playoff win this year.
Maybe this embarrassment will lead to TWO playoff victories. lol
I really wasn’t that offended by it. If we didn’t like it, we should’ve stopped it.
People didn’t like McGwire (and others) using roids. They stopped it.
People didn’t like the Pats using video tape. They stopped it.
We didn’t like getting scored on (again). We didn’t stop it.
It’s on us, folks.
This is one of the most hypocratical post of all time
So Minnesota cannot score in the 4th quarter because they were ahead of the Cowboys by 24
Well against Atl, with 3 min remaining, you were up 14, yet cowboy decide to scored a FG
Against Seattle up 28 with 8 min left, Dallas decide to score a FG, the game was over
Up 27-7 against the Eagles last week, the game was over, you guys scored a TD on the eagles
I do not see the cowboys not running up the score against the eagle last week, by getting to 34-7, but it is so horrible for the Vikings to do it back to the Cowboys
If it hurts you so much stop them from doing it, if you let in a TD, it means you are just not good enough, if Brooking had make a tackle for a loss, or PD the pass, do you think he would be complaining?
No, he is just a sore loser
Against the Eagles the final TD was
mid-way through the 3rd quater and on a 73 yard TD.
With the Vikings leading 27-3 late in the fourth quarter, Childress left his starters in the game. The Cowboys gave up the ball on downs at their 37-yard line with 5:26 remaining, and the Vikings threw three passes on their ensuing six-play drive. The final one was an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on fourth-and-3 with 1:55 remaining.
Sounds like running up the score to me!
Even without that score they whooped the (my) Cowboys today! So we move on to next year and be even more focused and driven!
In Romo we might Trust!
Seriously stop trolling fool.

I was as mad as brooking
for those who say “if you dont like it stop it” think about this. Dallas is sending 8 or probably 9 guys at the rb because thats what offenses do in that situation, run. If someone decides to pass its 1 on 1 and the O is more than likely going to complete passes. Its not as if there playing against a normal defense in those situations. Its taking candy from a baby.
The cowboys never do that crap. They run the ball to run the clock. They could have put up 50 on the eagles but they didnt decide to rub it in. The saints probably could have scored 60 on the cards but they ran the ball the whole 4th qrt.
Almost seemed like they were just trying to get favre four tds and now eveyone can say he had his best postseason game ever.
In the end it didnt make a difference on the outcome so it isnt a big deal.
It just shows they don’t have a coaching staff thats been there before and they dont know how to handle winning.

Dovi seriously?
That eagles score was in the early part of the THIRD qrt. and those other situations are fgs.
Much different.
See the saints, they know how to handle succsess. They didnt play action for more tds when they were up 31 in the game vrs the cards, they just ran the football.
Ill be enjoying it when the saints win by 20 this week.

i don't see how play action is the problem
misdirection play is not disallowed by any rule, the cowboys was using misdirection play the whole game
Yes they ran up the score...so what???
I am as big a Cowboys fan as anyone…but its simple…if you don’t like it…then stop it!
All I have said is that I just hope we have the chance to play them again in the playoffs next season!!
Don’t complain…get payback like we did to Philly!
What sucks is if Favre retires, we can't get payback on him. Dammit!

While little consolation to us...
I think the gods of footballing karma will work this one out in short order. If Favre & Childress (judging by his post game comments) needed a 4th down play-action TD at the end of the game to puff their chests out & create false bravado, smart money has the Saints walking away next weekend in a laugher
It always does work itself out!
And I will be cheering HARD for those very same New Orleans Saints! Hey Greg Williams…go get that QB!!
Childress has lost control of the Vikings
The last touchdown was all about Farve’s ego. A smart coach has all the backups in there after Dallas fails to convert at the five minute mark. I wrote this last night and will restate it. If Farve rolls out and we tackle him as he throw the ball, blowing out his knee, how is that working for you? Classless? Yes But even worse, shows that Farve does what he wants to do. Childress cannot take him out, cannot control him. it will blow up in his face, one way or another.
This next game may see Farve return to his old ways with bad throws and intercetions. I was totally impressed with the old man until the last. The bad outweighs the good in my mind. Go Saints!
Here's the funny thing
I don’t really mind what they did… it was running up the score, who cares.
But the Vikings aren’t a good road team, and there is more than a better chance that they will be blown out by the Saints on Sunday. They will be on the couch, just like us- and will have all offseason to worry about their own issues.
2009 BTB Part Deux Fantasy League Champion. 'Kill Everybody 13-2'. KDP knows football.
I like they ran the score up.
Maybe Dallas will remember this and come back next year with blood in their eyes and destroy some teams.
Is this a joke??????????????
I don’t know whether to join in on the debate, or laugh my freakin ass off!
All those who claim that it is part of being a ‘Professional’ football player are mistaken. Would you also agree that the Patriots were just getting an advantage by operating outside of the spirit of the rules when they filmed signals?
That would be called cheating.
Did Mark McGuire do anything wrong when he took steroids before they were put on the MLB banned substance list?
This would also be called cheating.
Are you implying that what the Vikings did was cheating?!? They scored a frickin touchdown and your beloved Boys couldn’t stop them. That’s it. They didn’t steal your defensive playbook. They didn’t sneak into the Cowboys practice and videotape your plays. They didn’t even take steroids (well this isn’t a sure thing, considering the Williams wall is under trial for taking diuretics). All they did was score a touchdown. Instead of crying like a bunch of babies, either stop it or just get over it and use it as motivation.
BTW, I hope you all understand that the Cowboys did (or attempted to do) the same thing just two weeks before:
With about 2:30 left in that game, the Cowboys faced a 4th-and-2 from the Eagles’ 35-yard line. They were up, 24-0 (the exact point differential in yesterday’s game before the final TD). Dallas could have easily taken a knee and given the Eagles’ offense the ball back with 2:20 left(note or attempted a long FG – JB), but Tony Romo dropped back and looked for a receiver before getting sacked by Juqua Parker.
The only difference here was the Eagles stopped them. The Cowboys couldn’t. Did you see any Eagles crying after the game about what the Cowboys did? Did you hear Brooking complaining about Wade or Garrett deciding to go for it on 4th down? No, but yet another team tries to do the EXACT SAME THING against them two weeks later and he cries and moans about it.
GET OVER IT! This is professional football. There’s no 10-run rule. There’s no mercy rule. Any team can decide to do whatever they want, and you can decide to stop them. You didn’t, they scored, and that’s that. I’ll say it again…
GET……. OVER……. IT!
Just calling it for what it is
The examples I used were all not against the rules of the sport at the time, but clearly were against the culture of the game.
It was done to rub the cowboys noses in it and also to pump up the Vikes a bit. No other reason to go for a touchdown in the situation.
(And I did exempt divisional games from this arguement. Some rivalries run deep and the Cowboys and Eagles played three times this year.)
Why does it matter
if it is or isn’t between two division rivals? It was in the “Divisional Round” of the playoffs afterall… But really, who cares. Who cares if it’s wrong for certain teams to do it to certain others but okay for division rivals to do it to each other. By your logic, it would’ve been okay for the Vikings to do it if they were playing the Packers, but not the Cowboys. You can’t be serious.
Get over it. Your Cowboys did it to my Eagles and no one cared. It was the Eagles job to freakin stop them. Unfortunately it took them almost 4 quarters to do it, but they did (on that particular play). If they hadn’t stopped them, I wouldn’t be crying… I’d say oh well, the Cowboys COULD score, so they DID score.
This is all just a big joke that people are crying about it. I’m obviously not speaking to ALL Cowboys fans because some see it like I do, but to the rest of you… GET OVER IT.
as i said earlier
hypocrate
if u have that much issue post about the cowboys as well … or you just have no credibility
Just think of it
Just think of it as payback for the Drew Pearson push-off in 1975.
You know, the penalty that you call a “Hail Mary.”
One more thing
If you listen to Favre’s postgame press conference, he specifically references a Packers-Cowboys game in which the Cowboys kicked a meaningless field goal at the end of the game, just to get the record for most field goals in a game. It also seems to me that Favre was looking for payback after your three playoff victories over him in the 90s, and the time you knocked him out of the game a couple of years ago. His younger rival, Aaron Rodgers, came into the game and played well. That led to a lot of talk in Green Bay about not needing Favre anymore.
For Favre, this was personal.
I remember that game...thought it was against the Eagles.
Reggie White was all pissed.
BTB League Consolation Ladder Champ...thought you knew.

Gimme a break
OK, this is utterly ridiculous. Some of the Cowboys and some of their fans are beginning to look pretty silly, and worse like sore losers. Whether it was 34-3, or 27-3, the Cowboys received a thorough drubbing. As a Viking fan, I’m not saying that to rub salt in the wound, it’s just a fact. I honestly doubt the Vikings are ‘that much’ better than the Cowboys, and maybe the Cowboys could have made it close if they played well. But in that game, on that day, at Minnesota, the Vikings were in total control. If you watched the game, you don’t need the final score to tell you that.
Now watch the video, and I’ll make my points. If the Vikings were trying to run it up, yes that would be tacky, I agree. But I don’t think they were and here’s why:
1. It was 4th and 3, the Cowboys stack the line and bring 7 guys. They are still playing, from what I can see. Should the Vikings not try to at least make a positive play, with 2:00 left?
2. It was too long to run for the first and get it into a 7 man front. They still needed a positive play.
3. The Vikings had a short field. A positive play for the Vikes will either be a first down or a touchdown.
4. Running up the score would be kicking a field goal there.
5. Watch the play. The Vikes keep 7 guys to block, and send out the fullback Tahi, Lewis, their 4th wide receiver, and Shiancoe to clear out the field. I think Favre was looking to Tahi, but he was covered. Lewis underneath also totally covered. Shiancoe was the only place to throw it. What if he gets sacked for a loss, or fumbles, or gets hurt, or throws a pick-six forcing it to Tahi? Favre could have thrown it away, but then the clock doesn’t run. He had one place to go to make a positive play, and that was going to be a touchdown.
6. Clock stops on a change of possession. A first down is the only way the Vikes can run out the clock. Taking a knee on 4th down, or throwing it away, doesn’t do anything to get the game over.
7. Notice who is third to high-five Favre after the play? Sydney Rice… on the bench. Who else is on the bench? Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian. If the Vikes were running up the score on purpose, would they send out Tahi and Greg Lewis? It wasn’t a designed play to score, and the Vikes didn’t have their best players out there to score.
8. The only guy running up the score was Longwell. What an ass. Why didn’t he intentionally shank the extra point?
9. Wade Phillips I can’t forgive. In the heat of the moment, Brookings was pissed and frustrated. Phillips knew exactly who the Vikings had on the field and exactly what they were doing. There is no excuse for his classless response. He is a sore loser.
10. If the game was over, why did Wade Phillips use all of his time outs on the previous possession? On that possession, the Vikings ran the ball three times and only threw it in 4th and long after Phillips burned his timeouts. After turning it over on downs (in field-goal range, I might add), the Cowboys came back with 4 straight pass attempts with Romo in the shotgun. Why didn’t they run the clock out, if they couldn’t win, with no time outs left? Please ask Wade Phillips that one. Or, if you don’t run out the clock with runs, how about getting a first down with the pass when the Vikes are in the prevent defense, so you at least move the ball away from your own end? Maybe Romo could complete a friggin’ short pass at the end of the game and at least move the ball.
11. If the Vikings were trying to run up the score, they would throw for the endzone on 3rd down, not 4th. If they wanted to run up the score, and they didn’t score on 3rd down, they would kick a field goal on 4th down.
12. Whatever you want to say about Favre, he has been a classy player for his entire career. He’s always been cutthroat and emotional, and what drove me nuts when he was a Packer now I love that he’s a Viking. He’s always been classy. I want my QB to be cutthroat, and I’m guessing Cowboys fans do too.
I don’t hear all the Cowboys players whining about that TD. Or all the fans, for that matter. Please consider taking the high road here. If trying to make the Vikings out to be classless because you got whipped makes you feel better, then I’m sorry but that’s just pathetic. Wade Phillips is an embarrassment.
Being a sore loser, in my mind, and trying to gain some kind of “moral superiority” to the Vikings, when you’ve been completely dominated for 60 minutes, doesn’t show class. Y’all got an old-school whupping by a better team. Man up, for goodness sakes. Look forward to next year instead of back. If Keith Brookings and Wade Phillips want to play with a Pop Warner mercy rule, then they should also remember in Pop Warner you shake hands and say "good game" when it’s over.
Good luck next year. I’d guess Cowboys are back in the playoffs next year, probably with the division title again.

Moreover...
If Phillips wants to save face and keep it 27-3, then instead of going for it on 4th down in your own end with no time outs, punt the ball. Remember punting? Don’t pass on 4th down, punt. Giving the Vikings a short field to run the clock out on is asking for a cheap score.
And furthermore...
Apparently Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman didn’t see a problem with it.
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/tag/_/name/wade-phillips
“It was a butt kicking,” said Johnson during the postgame show. “If you don’t want your butt kicked, play better.”
Maybe Berrian had a reason to be pissed at Brookings
Watch this video to see why.
That video shows nothing
It wasn’t an elbow to the throat. If it was, dont you think Berrian might have gotten up a bit fired up?
RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

Maybe
Was the official that pulled Brookings off of Berrian the same one who kept him from getting his head ripped off when he was taunting the Vikes on their own sideline? I dunno. Should’ve been a flag and perhaps a fine for going to the opposing sideline. Brookings is a punk.
Now who is crying?
Just like the legal Al Harris hit on AP a couple of years ago… the Minny fans are still crying about that one.
Cowboy Up!
Brooking's weight is not on his elbow.
you can see pretty clearly in the video that Brooking does not have his weight on the elbow.
Could be interesting in two weeks...
When the Viking and Cowboys players have to share a locker room at the Pro Bowl. Most of the time Favre comes up with some lame excuse so he doesn’t have to participate and promote the league, so he will probably save face.
I have no problem with the TD…. The Viking franchise needs these moments to try and make up for a history of disappointments.
Who Dat?
Cowboy Up!
A good excuse is...
Favre might be getting ready for the superbowl.
If not, the Vikings will easily outnumber the Cowboys at the probowl.
