Off-Season Moves: Defense
It was fun being GM for a little while. Mixed reviews on my last post.
Without further ado, here is my GM for the day on Defense:
Defensive Tackle:
- Jay Ratliff – No changes
- Junior Siavii – Offer 2nd round tender.
- Draft – Find someone in the lower rounds or UDFA to develop to become in the rotation in the next 2-3 years.
Defensive Ends:
- Igor Olshansky – No changes
- Marcus Spears – Sign him to a 3-5yr contract.
- Jason Hatcher – Offer a 2nd round tender.
- Stephen Bowen – Sign him to a 3-5yr contract.
- Marcus Dixon (Practice Squad) – Continue to develop him, possibly push Jason Hatcher for a roster spot.
- Draft – No reason to draft here unless Best Available.
Inside Linebacker:
- Keith Brooking – I really like Keith, but he was really exposed in the Minnesota game. If he is willing to compete for his position, and be okay if he gets beat, then I think he should stay. Otherwise, he becomes a progress stopper and needs to be cut (1 million max). I hope he is willing to set an example of work ethic for our young defensive players.
- Bradie James – No changes
- Bobby Carpenter – No changes. He is in the last year of his contract, and really he becomes an insurance policy in the event that our other younger players do not work out.
- Jason Williams – No changes. Should hopefully push for the starting position, or at least primary backup.
- Curtis Johnson – Haven’t heard much from him, but he is cheap and young, so bring him into training camp to compete for depth.
- Stephen Hodge (IR) – Hopefully is healthy for training camp, and will push Bobby for the nickel linebacker.
- Donovan Woods (Practice Squad) – Bring to training camp.
- Draft - No reason to draft here unless Best Available.
Outside Linebacker:
- DeMarcus Ware – No changes.
- Anthony Spencer – No changes.
- Victor Butler – Keep learning from DeMarcus / Spencer.
- Steve Octavien – Sign him to a 2-3yr deal. He is an ERFA, so he won’t be going anywhere.
- Brandon Williams (IR) – Keep learning from DeMarcus / Spencer.
- Leon Williams (Practice Squad) – Bring to training camp to compete.
- Draft – No reason to draft here unless Best Available.
Cornerback:
- Terence Newman – No changes.
- Mike Jenkins – No changes.
- Orlando Scandrick – No changes.
- Alan Ball – Sign him to a 2-3yr deal. He is an ERFA, so he won’t be going anywhere. Possibly officially move him to FS.
- Cletis Gordon – Offer original tender for him. If he can’t compete with Alan Ball and/or Draft picks/Practice Squad, then cut him (cost of the tender)
- Marquis Floyd (Practice Squad) – Bring back to compete in training camp.
- Draft – I really feel we should look for a solid corner in rounds 3-5 to come in and push Alan Ball / Cletis Gordon for their spot.
Safety:
- Ken Hamlin – He needs to be cut (6 million). He doesn’t have the range we need on the field to free up Sensabaugh to engage in more TE coverage & run support. With Alan Ball able to fill in here as well, we should be fine.
- Gerald Sensabaugh – Sign him to a 2-3yr deal. He did a great job, and is a huge upgrade over what we have had.
- Patrick Watkins – Sign him to a 2-3yr deal. He is an excellent backup, and great special team player.
- Michael Hamlin – Not sure if he is the solution, but hopefully he can compete with Alan Ball for the FS starter.
- Draft – Spend a quality pick (first three rounds) on a FS, and a lower round 4-7 on a SS.
So on the Defensive Side of the ball, looking to cut at least one person on the 53 man roster, possibly two more depending on quality and attitude. We would be getting Brandon Williams back from the IR, so not much space for Draft picks on Defense.

It looks good
I don’t think we should cut Hamlin unless we get a FS we like in the draft, he is amazingly average back there, but at least since we had him, big plays have shrunk by a lot, if only he could get back to his 07’ performance where he had 5 Int’s all would be good, even if he had a few more plays but he is always 1 step too slow

I think 3 would be okay at the right price.
I can’t see keeping Spears, Hatcher and Bowen. I like to see some churning/new blood.
Hatcher is an odd one – he has just never stepped up like I hoped.
I don’t see Watkins as an excellent backup – I see him as a liability at S.
Don’t let Carpenter get in anybody’s way.

For my money
there is no way I consider cutting Brooking and keeping Carpenter. Both Hodge and J.Williams played some safety in college and Carpenter is not THAT good in coverage to mask his horrendous run game skills. I think either of the young guys can do what Carpenter does. Maybe they can stop the run too. Watkins has run his course too. I don’t see why you would cut K. Hamlin. The defense jelled when he returned. Ball is not a great FS. M. Hamlin is a SS. I would offer Spears reasonable money. He does what Olshansky does.
my points
DL 2d round tender for siavii is too high, better a lower thing or cut, agree with drafting someone
-the bowen hatcher thing and even spears is actually the one keeps me guessing more, maybe the long deal with spears will be ok but paying him no mre than 20-25millions in five years, with hatcher and bowen i just dont know i think they’re good but don’t know if it’s good enough but anyway i think hatcher is better than bowen, so the long term deal should go to him
LB i’m ok with keeping brooking with less play time, curtis johnson i think is olb and should be fired as well as octavien
CB cut cletis gordon and draft someone
S trade hamlin i think we could receive a 3 or 4 round pick and please cut watkins, jerry
can’t waste time and money just because he’s good in special teams, his position is SS and he doesn’t offer anything in that spot
Special Teams is 1/3 of your *TEAM*
For reasonable $$ it is smart, and common practice by good teams, to keep a ST “Demon” on the payroll. Remember how bad we all yelled for some ST upgrades in 08? Fire the coach! bring in some ST players in free agency! Watkins is one of the big reasons we were so much better in 09. Another 2 years with him as a ST will pay dividends in our playoff position and success.
Nice job VWBug
I agree with you on almost every point.
-I wouldn’t mind Spears being re-signed for a contract similar to Drago’s, but if they grab someone in the draft (pretty deep DT class), I would be fine with him going somewhere else.
-I think you have Curtis Johnson and Leon Williams positions switched.
-I don’t know about re-signing Watkins, I think this would be an easy spot to fill in the draft.
-I disagree with letting go of Brooking, he is a valuable player and obviously a veteran leader. I hope Jason Williams can eventually take over that spot, but I’d rather have the proven vet next to Bradie to start the season. I don’t see him as a progress stopper, but rather as the perfect guy to mentor Williams and Hodge.
-Hope the CB depth is bolstered with player(s) who can double as return specialists.
Drago says, "We must break you!"
Its a salary issue
and I wouldn’t but Hamlin. I know he is avg but he is better than our alternative right now. Also , maybe this year we can actually have scouts and dratf guys that can be backups and possibly starters than insisting on getting guys for special teams? That seems to be an area that concerned me most about last years draft. The again , alot of the draft picks didn’t play due to injury , so maybe now we can see if someone sticks :)
"When people talk about Super Bowl dynasties they mention the 1970's Steelers, 1980's 49ers, 1990's Cowboys and the current New England Patriots, but nobody has dominated the Super Bowl like Anheuser-Busch. In recent years, Budweiser has been the MVP of Super Bowl advertising -- making another company the favorite to win the Ad Meter poll was never an option."

I'm all about Earl Thomas if he can fall to us
that’s a playmaker at the safety position.

+1
I’ve seen in 1 mock that he falls to us, most have him either getting scooped up by the Giants or Steelers

Earl is to small
5’10 185lbs is not going to cut it in the NFL IMO. I would much rather draft Nate Allen or Myron Rolle. They both have the size and intangibles to be excellent FS. I especially like Myron Rolle. He brings a true mix of athletic ability and intelligence we have not had since Woodson retired.
Just wanted to pose this question here...
With the uncertainty w/ drafting players, w/ out the CBA and no salary cap would anyone rather pick up a RFA than to draft someone in the particular round that they had been tendered?

Not unless they were proven
RFA’s tend to cost better picks than they are worth. It is rare that a guy outplays his tender like Miles.
