Brandon Marshall to the boys?
today i heard that the boys are in the brandon marshall sweepstakes. we all know what he can do on the field (NFL record 21 receptions in a single game), but we would probably have to give up a 2nd and/or 3rd round draft pick for him. Also, theres a big chance he could be T.O. 2.0. im on the fence about this one, yes miles austin has showed he is our #1 receiver, but if all we have across from him is patrick crayton or roy williams were gonna have a hard time getting him the ball. If we do do this, it will most likely mean the departure of roy williams, and possibly crayton too, making kevin ogeltree the number 3 receiver. I dont know if i like this, your thoughts?

Where did you hear this?
And difference between T.O. and Marshall is if Marshall explodes he doesn’t have anyone in the locker room backing him up. T.O. brought guys to his side.
I think Marshall is a good risk. What he could do for our offense would be amazing. If it doesn’t work out then you cut him. But he is a risk that is worth taking.

would love this move....
Marshall is a big body with speed…..add Ogletree as the 3rd with Austin and thats a impressive unit.

Marshall is not a locker room cancer like TO.....
His only problem in Denver was the way the organization handled the Cutler situation if you remember

either way its a pipe dream I know….he is an amazing talent..He and Andre are the top two WRs in the league right now. We will probably see him in a Redskin jersey next season anyway…

I don't think he is as big of a cancer as TO
and if he did come here, this team has went through the dumps and come together, I don’t think he would have a choice but to join in as well

marshall seems pretty 'T.O.' to me
don’t care how good he is. haven’t the Cowboys spent the last two seasons gravitating away from exactly this type of player and attitude??!!
Right after the game, say as little as possible.

Exactly...
Marshall would have to fall in line behind established leaders such as Tony and Jason. He wouldn’t have the pull that T.O. had and since we know Jerry would pay him, I think he would be on his best behavior. And if he is on his best behavior, he is a top ten receiver in this league.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I call BS
unless the Broncos want to do Roy + a third for marshall. That makes some sense. But no way we give up a first for him – we’ve been burned by wr trades too many times.
There are so many reasons this won’t happen.
1. We don’t want any more diva wrs in the locker room. and the aforementioned failed wr trades
2. Austin put up clear number 1 numbers, witten was great again, craytons a good number 3, roy is a question mark and ogletree has serious potential. We have all the weapons we need.
3. We need these draft picks. Our oline needs fresh legs and dl needs depth. As I said before, for a third and Roy, it wouldn’t kill our draft, but giving up a first would be a HUGE mistake.
I think this is the media making the BS Jerry loves big name players reasoning.
No shot in hell...
Roy Williams – 5 years, $45 million.
Miles Austin – Soon to get something in the Roy Williams neighborhood.
Brandon Marshall – Also looking for a monster contract.
You simply can’t pay 3 receivers in excess of $9 million each. Not happening, no way, no how.
Thats not true at all
Anytime a big name WR becomes available, idiots start rumors we’re interested, but there’s no way in hell Jerry goes down that road again.
Jerry loves our WR corp as well he should.

Jerry is upgrading dude...count on it..he isnt going to spill the beans on his draft plans...that would be stupid

If Jerry does anything this year, it will be to move up in the 1st rd. We moved down last year, Jerry isn’t doing that 2 years in a row unless we get a #1 in 2011.
In Romo we Trust
Jerry is just blowin smoke like he always does Terry

2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
he doesn't always blow smoke, you should know better
In this case, I don’t think he is because our WR corp is very solid
In Romo we Trust
its not solid dude....
Austin is the only solid WR we have…RW is a bust and Crayton is old and slow….Hurd is gone….Ogletree, they aren’t ready to committ yet to…we need an upgrade and more speed at the position….Just look what the Colts with speed at the 3 and 4 spot can do…take Wayne away and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th WRs will burn you..
"Austin made the play, Austin saved the day" Brad Sham
no, our WR corp is solid
RW is still capable of being a good #2, Crayton is much better than you think and Olgetree is going to be a player
In Romo we Trust
its shakey..needs an upgrade..
Crayton stinks and shows up a handfull times a year. He isnt special enough not to think we dont need an upgrade. Ogletree is going to be the future #3, but thats unclear when, hopefully next year. You can never have enough talent and speed on offense and we need more. Jerry hasn’t drafted a talented WR in some time and its time this year. Its an excellent class for speed WRs. Teams have showed that you can start a rookie WR and he will be productive so thats not an issue. Have a rookie compete with Ogletree for the #3 in training camp. Worst case scenerio we have two speed guys as the #3 and #4 going into next season. One of those players will also be the PR.
"Austin made the play, Austin saved the day" Brad Sham
you're delusional if you really think Crayton stinks
Crayton is a very good slot receiver. Olgetree could beat out RW for #2, either way, we’re in good shape at WR.
It would nice to add another talented receiver, but definitely not a priority.
In Romo we Trust
I would be more comfortable if we picked up someone
I don’t think we need to spend a premier pick on a WR, but maybe a fourth on Freddie Barnes, his stock is going up and I think he would be a good pickup, I also like Emmanual Sanders as a UDFA

OMG.....some freaking logic being spoken...preach it 5Blings...lol
Ive said the same things also. Desean Jackson, Percy Harvin type player as the #3. A threat to defenses on every snap to take it the distance. We have one player right now and thats Austin. Rookies have shown that can contribute from the start. Go into next season with a rookie and Ogletree competing to be the #3 WR. That way other than RW we have speed from 3 out of the 4 WRs…
Just look at the two teams in the Super Bowl and that should give you an idea what speed can do to defenses.
"Austin made the play, Austin saved the day" Brad Sham
Crayton doesn't stink.

I don't think he covers ALOT better than Burnett.
I would have to get OCC to do some comparisons, but there hasn’t been alot of times where I see Carpenter and I go, “Man that nickel LB spot is so much better now that he is in there.”

I said TO was going to get cut in a matter of weeks prior to it happening and people thought I was crazy...
I was also pushing Austin being the next TO in the making. He has the size and speed to be a #1 in this league. At the time I can understand people didnt think so, Im just glad he got his chance because it wasnt the coaching staff that saw the light. It had to take an injury to RW for Garrett to wake up and see what he had.
"Austin made the play, Austin saved the day" Brad Sham
Garrett knew what he had
I give the coaching staff a lot of credit for bringing Austin from nothing but potential to present day stud WR. You could tell each season he got a little bit better. I think he would have had a good year in ‘08 if he and Romo hadn’t been injured. His performance in Green Bay was a preview of what was coming.

Why should anyone "love" our WR corps?
Austin is really great, but after that, are we really that solid? RW is clearly not a #1 talent and cannot really be counted on to be a consistent threat. Crayton has maxed out his potential as a solid #3 receiver and does not provide any threat that coaches have to game plan for. Hurd is a career special teams player and has not shown the ability to do anything down the field. Ogletree could be a very good player, but he still has to take that next step into being a consistent player on the field.
Do I think our receiver corp is terrible? No I don’t. But it is unquestionable that we could upgrade.

I really don’t like the idea of drafting WR early in the draft. But if you can get a Brandon Marshall for a third round pick and Roy Williams, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t do that. You could still go OT in the first, FS in the second, and another lineman in the fourth. That right there would upgrade our team more than any regular four player draft could in my opinion.

“He’s not a locker room cancer.”
Maybe not the way Owens was but before the first of the season he was jogging in practice and when guys were throwing passes his way he was batting them down to the ground.
In the game against the Chiefs he got benched and while McDaniels caught the brunt of the blame, it was reported that players hated that he was not being accounted for and that most of them felt like he was milking an injury.
I’m not saying he can’t change or that he will always be a knucklehead, but he’s highly volatile and he wouldn’t be a good fit in a Dallas lockeroom that is trying to change it’s culture.
by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Jan 25, 2010 9:26 AM CST reply actions
The Cowboys just don’t need to revert back to working with these types of players…
The unity this team played with made all the difference down the stretch this year.
I’d much prefer that they bring in a fire breathing dragon of an offensive tackle and / or guard to own the line of scrimmage with.
The NFC East has won 11 Super Bowls; oddly none of those have come courtesy of the Eagles.
Shockey is a knucklehead
But obviously the team culture Payton has created in New Orleans has made him more of an asset than a liability.
That said, look at Randy Moss. Eventually, the idiot part of him surfaced. These guys just can’t change their stripes.
Dallas, after doping what it did last offseason, can’t afford to change course now.
It will need to win with character guys that may not be flashy, but certainly won’t create a problem either.
Now, would I trade Telly B straight up for Marshall? Hell yes, because that is an idiot for idiot kind of deal. :-)

"Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can't play football worth a damn."

Bottom line......
We need to focus on the offensive line first. I’d rather have the best offensive line in the league with avg. wr’s, rb’s, etc. than a crappy, old offensive line witth Andre Johnson, Adrian Petterson, etc. Just imagine if we had the offensive line we had in the 90’s with Romo, Felix, and all the rest. We need two solid o-lineman and at least one that can deff. be a starter right away.
I would love this.
Trade Crayton and find a way to get rid of Roy, put Ogletree in the slot, and line Marshall up on the opposite side as Austin. That would be ridiculous. I’ve been advocating this ever since I found out Marshall would be a FA. Also, he and McDaniels don’t seem to get along very well, so I’m pretty sure it’s not that far-fetched to say that he probably wants out of Denver. The problem is, I just don’t see how likely this move would actually be. If anybody can pull it off it’s Jerry though.

Marshall isn't T.O.
But if he pouts every once in a while so be it. At least he’ll produce. Roy Williams whines all the time and he sucks, so it’s not like that’s anything new. And no doubt we need to address the O-line, but that’s what the draft is for. I would fully support Marshall to Dallas, if the price is right (player and pick wise, not money). And it goes without saying (I think) that we would have to shed some salary in order to make it happen.

It's kind of a double edged sword.
If there is a cap, we probably wouldn’t be able to get him because of our cap space. Unless they were stupid enough to take maybe Roy Williams and some picks or if we could find somebody else to pawn Roy off on. If there is no cap, Denver might franchise him or something (who knows though, maybe they both want to be rid of each other) and either hold on to him or trade him for draft picks.

You guys are killing me
with this trade RW talk. Jerry is not going to trade Roy because Roy puts butts in the seats. Think about it. When the Cowboys traded for Roy they had T.O. and Witten. Do you really think Roy was going to be targeted with the ball more than those two guys? Seriously? Roy’s performance in Detroit did not deserve the contract or the draft picks that got him to Dallas. However, with a billion dollar new stadium, bringing home one of Texas’ favorite sons made the deal worthwhile to Jerry. Save your breath, RW is not going anywhere.
Roy puts butts in the seats?
Seriously? Wouldn’t an effective WR that helped this team get to the Super Bowl put more butts in the seats?
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
Read the entire post.
My point is the deal for Roy was a business decision by Jerry due to Roy’s popularity as a UT grad. Having said that, I do not consider Roy the abomination that you do. To answer your question, no I don’t believe that another receiver would have had the fan appeal in Texas that RW brought based on his UT career.
I don't think that's entirely true
Maybe Roy being a Texas alum was 5% of the reason Jerry got him. But the other 95% was because the Cowboys thought he would be really good.
They could have drafted Quan Cosby last season if filling roster spots with UT grads was a priority.
Drago says, "We must break you!"
by APerfectStar on Jan 26, 2010 2:18 PM CST up reply actions
You have to compare the
situations at the time they occurred. At the time the Cowboys got Roy, everyone was clamoring for a WR to play opposite T.O. Terry Glenn was gone and the Dallas offense was floundering a bit. Jerry heard Roy was unhappy and saw an opportunity to get a fairly young receiver to play opposite T.O. If you consider that Moss was obtained by N.E. for a 4th rounder, the ransom for Roy was ridiculous. The situations were somewhat different but not THAT big of a disparity.
Of course they thought he would be really good but he was NEVER EVER going to get targeted like Owens and Witten in the Cowboys offense. That made at him at best the third target for the pass offense. Roy should have been able to obtain 2nd target status but has failed to do so. Miles had a little bit of an advantage over Roy being in the same offense for 4 years and to his credit, took advantage of it. I believe it was more than 5% because I don’t believe that if Roy had gone to Penn State or Michigan, that Jerry would have traded picks 1 and 3 and swapped a 6th for Roy. I wouldn’t trade a 1st 3rd and a 6th for Larry Fitzgerald and he is great.
If you are right about this, that Jerry gave up ore draft picks than he otherwise would have, thant that is reason #478 why Jerry needs to hire a General Manager
because that is idiotic from a football perspective
For the record, I would trade a 1st, 3rd and 6th for Fitz
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
You are right that
from a football perspective it makes no sense. If you think about it gets worse because Roy would have been a FA at the end of the 2008 season and we wouldn’t have had to trade any picks. That is why I’m saying it had to be a business decision. He knew Roy wouldn’t be a major target in the offense, not with Witten and Owens on the team. So why else do you do it? I know Jerry can be a little quirky but you don’t get that rich being a downright fool. Roy’s stats in Detroit surely didn’t warrant that type of compensation especially if Randy Moss’ deserve a fourth rounder. So what else is there?
Jerry falls in love with players and overpays for them and/or Jerry sucks as a GM
