Carpe Bobby 5-point Improvement Scheme (State of the Cowboys)

The Carpe Bobby 5-point Improvement Scheme

* arrows project whether the player gets better (↑), get worse (↓) or stays the same (↔)

OFFENSE

QB:

Romo ↑ Entering peak.
Kitna ↓ He could play for a few games if needed, anything more we are f**ked.
McGee ↑ Can’t get any worse than he was.

RB:

Felix Jones ↑ Should start and get at least 15 carries a game.
Tashard Choice ↑ Should be 3rd down back.  I trust him to get tough yards more than other two.
Marion Barber ↓ He has broken down last two years, closer/garbage time guy or trade him.

FB:

Deon Anderson ↔ Always injured, good effort, likeable guy, average

TE:

Jason Witten ↔ Still in peak, needs to cut it out with the penalties.
Martellus Bennett ↑ Had a bad season, but will get better, if someone offers a 1, please take it.
John Philips ↑ Pretty much the man.

WR:

Miles Austin ↑ Do it again.
Roy Williams ↓ Give him one more year and cut him if he doesn’t step it up.
Patrick Crayton ↔ Solid.  He’s approaching downside of career though.
Kevin Ogletree ↑ Keep giving him touches, looks like a solid prospect.
Sam Hurd ↔ Good special teamer, think he would do fine with increased PT.

OL:

Leonard Davis ↓ Just entered downside, will be fine for a few more years.
Andre Guroude ↓ Same as Leonard Davis.
Flozell Adams ↓ Firmly in downside of career, fine with cutting him if had another decent  T prospect.
Marc Colombo ↓ See Guroude.
Doug Free ↑ Alright! We finally developed a OL, want to see him starting next year.
Kyle Kosier ↓ Good enough, could do better though, in downside as well
Robert Brewster ↑ Has to be better than this year.

DEFENSE

S:

Gerald Sensabaugh ↔ Don’t know how this season stacked up to previous ones, pretty solid though
Ken Hamlin ↓ Doesn’t give up big plays, doesn’t make big plays, in downside of career
Michael Hamlin ↑ Has to be better because he did nothing

CB

Mike Jenkins ↑ This guy is the man should get even better
Terrance Newman ↔ He’s just leaving prime, but seems like a guy that can play into late 30’s
Orlando Scandrick ↑ Shaky start, strong finish, he should continue to improve.
Alan Ball ↑ He’s a gamer.  Like him as the dual backup

ILB

Bradie James ↔ He’s in career peak, solid player.
Keith Brooking ↓ He’s firmly in downside of career but was awesome as player and leader.
Bobby Carpenter ↑ Carpe was decent enough in his role, should keep getting better through hard work.
Jason Williams ↑ Did nothing but should be ready to compete next season.
Stephen Hodge ↑ See Jason Williams.

OLB

Demarcus Ware ↔ Ware is in his prime, he is awesome and will be for years to come.
Anthony Spencer ↑ He played great this year and should keep improving.
Victor Butler ↑ Flashed playmaking abilities.  Looks like a player.
Brandon Williams ↑ See Stephen Hodge.

DL

Jay Ratliff ↔ In his prime, we need to find a backup to keep him fresh and prolong career.
Igor Olshansky ↔ Better and cheaper than Canty.  Nice Addition.
Marcus Spears ↔ Worthy of extension at right price.
Stephen Bowen ↑ Still developing, Solid backup.
Jason Hatcher ↔ Solid Backup.  Hasn’t developed as hoped for.

SPECIAL TEAMS

K

?
David Beuhler ↑ Wish he could kick field goals, but awesome as Kick Off guy and special teamer.

P

Mat McBriar ↑ He keeps getting better.  I guess punters can improve into mid thirties.

KR

? Felix and Miles too valuable as starters, Ogletree not overly impressive.

PR

Patrick Crayton ↑ Had an outstanding bet that I would shotgun 3 beers back-to-back if he ever returned a punt for TD.  Well I drank 6 and should have had to drink 9 if not for a penalty wiping one out.  That being said, we can still find a better PR.

*players not mentioned are roster filler in my book – not likely to ever start and replaceable

DRAFT PLAN:

Priorties:

1: OL – We need one immediate starter at C, G, or T and at least one other prospect.  We can move Guroude to G if needed.  Free can start at LT or RT, Kosier can be improved upon.  Just take Best Available OL and sort it out later.

2: FS – We need a fast, rangy playmaker at S.  Earl Thomas is the player I want, but already sounds like that is out of the question.  Need good cover skills.

3: DL – This draft is supposedly deep at DL, we can improve ours.  NT and DE, we need some young talent.

4: CB – Need more young talent here and preferably with return skills

5: ILB – We have two solid vets, one questionable backup, and two unproven projects.  A legit prospect wouldn’t hurt.

6: WR – We lack a true deep threat.  Wouldn’t mind taking one mid-rounds.

7: K – Don’t know if we need to draft one, but we got to figure out something.

8: QB – nowhere close to sold on backups.

9: RB/TE – More important if we trade Bennett/Barber/Choice, otherwise don’t really need any more players.

*I am firm believer in spending most high picks on defensive players (like Ravens were known for)

DRAFT PROSPECTS I Like (rds 1-2):

OL –

Bruce Campbell - Upside, Athleticism, Size
Mike Iupiti - Size, Power
Maukice Pouncey - Size, Power, Athleticism
Vladimir Ducasse - Huge, Size, Power

S –

Earl Thomas - Ballhawking Athlete - my favorite player in draft
Chad Jones - Size, Athleticism
Morgan Burnett - Football player

DL –

Terrance Cody - Massive NT
Mike Neal - Solid DE prospect

WR –

Arrelious Benn - Athleticism, Size
Golden Tate - Deep Threat
Demaryius Thomas - Athleticism, Size

FREE AGENTS / TRADES

-I’m cool with trading/cutting the following if we find some solid replacements:

Flozell Adams – old, dumb penalties.
Ken Hamlin – contract too big for level of play.
Kyle Kosier – just an average player in general.
Jon Kitna – doesn’t inspire any confidence in me.

-I’m cool with trading the following players for something reasonable:

Bobby Carpenter – is a 4-3 OLB  trying to play ILB in the 3-4
Marion Barber – pricy contract, other players on roster
Roy Williams – been a bust so far.  Never needed him in first place.
Martellus Bennett – should have taken that 1 from Cincy.

CONCLUSION:

Our team is solid at every position and great at some positions.  The OL is old and weakening.  The DL is solid but lacks young talent.  DBs lack depth and is in need of more young playmakers.  WRs lack explosive deep threat.  ILBs could be upgraded.  K situation is a clusterf**k.  Return game needs some juice.

good analysis

but we’re never going to trade or cut Flo this year, thats just nonsense. We need to draft and develop some OL soon because like you said, the OL are starting to enter the downside of their careers.

Iupati and Pouncey are both rated #1 at their positions

Hard to believe they will be there at #27, but maybe OCC can troll other sites and compile their draft needs so we can forecast who will be taken from 1-26?

Yep, had planned to do something like that, but not 3 months ahead of the draft lol

BTW, if you’re online right now, I’d like to talk to you anyway about some other ideas for fanposts. If you’re so inclined, post ‘yes’ in the till 12.00 am CET, and we’ll try to connect.

Fortunately, a bit rare to see interior linemen go in the top half of the first round

especially if history is any indication. Most teams at the top looking for OL help look strictly at the perimeter spots, LT & RT. And any guard drafted that high is usually done so with the projection to move to T.

Draftniks would probably consider taking any interior o-lineman before 20 a reach, which is why Jerry is probably in pretty good position to land the top rated player at C or G in the mid-late 20s, especially when factoring in the inevitable reaches some team (i.e. Oakland) will take on a skill position player.

by NinoP on Jan 25, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

Cowboys are in a great spot to get a blue chip interior lineman, but too far down to realistically get a blue chip T.

I would like us to take Nate Allen.

He sounds a lot like Darren Sharper. A young Sharper is exactly what this team needs. Would to get Iupati as well. Looks like a guy who can play guard or tackle in the NFL.

I like him a lot as a potential second round pick...

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

The only real disagreement I have

is that I like Charles Brown out of USC a lot more than I like Bruce Campbell out of Maryland. Campbell is the superior athlete, but I feel that Brown is a more than adequate athlete with a better background (pro-style) and better technique (at least from the videos I have watched).

Also, I think Terrance Cody would be a pretty bad pick since I would like my NT to have more than a career 51 tackles (only 19 solo tackles!!!).

Other than that though I like a lot of the same prospects with maybe the exception of Demaryius Thomas (I like his potential as a GT fan but he would be very raw for a high draft pick).

Another solid draft/roster analysis post

Hate repeating the same mantra in all of these threads, but….. I think most fans want to improve at least one of the offensive lineman, and I think Kosier is the most likely candidate. I continue to advocate taking Pouncey and either having him play LG or move Gurode to LG and Pouncey to C. I think this offers the best injury insurance. Kosier is in his final year, I believe, so he should not be cut, just moved to the bench. He also is capable of playing adequately at T in a pinch.

Not sure I’d cut any of the high priced vets unless you are certain you’ve drafted a rookie starter. Beyond the 1st round, I don’t know if you are ever confident a draft pick can start for a championship contending team, at least coming out of training camp.

Really good breakdown Carpe Bobby

Like your potential draft picks (except for Cody and Thomas in the top rounds)
I don’t know that I would cut any starters even if their replacement is drafted. Then again it’s not my money paying them.

Scratch Cody

Just saw his weigh-in numbers. Maybe we can pick him up after he slides 3-5 rds

Why is John Phillips stock up?

Didn’t it come out recently that he was doing his daughter after his band broke up?

I agree

I’ve said once before and I’ll say it again. This team needs two main things. The O-line needs to get stronger and they need a Grade A field goal kicker. They do that they should be unstoppable. They got a great QB. They got great receivers,(even Roy Williams has his moments,) The got a great D-line. And a great coach who I am happy to hear will be back. They have those 2 weak areas and I’m confident they will make those areas stronger in the off season. So I look forward to the next season. Although I’m sure it will feel like a long long wait.

by Steve2273 on Jan 26, 2010 12:41 PM CST reply actions

Agree with that....

Solid FG kicker has to be a priority…. I know we got burned with Vander-jerk a couple years ago, but are there any bad ass kickers coming into free agency? Would like to get a veteran who is known for being reliable. It’s too bad about Nick Folk — Would love to see him rehab the hip injury better in the off season and try out for us again next year.

by hakrjak on Jan 26, 2010 1:16 PM CST up reply actions

as soon as the Super Bowl is over

Indy’s going to have a decision regarding Vinatieri & Matt Stover. Assuming Vinatieri isn’t ready to hang up the cleat, I’m hoping Stover finds himself available, as rumor has it that he lives in Dallas in the offseason which may help sway him. Not a powerful leg that you can bomb away from 50+ out, but very consistent from 45 and in, which is really the best you can ask for in a kicker.

I’m also open to bringing Folk back to compete during training camp. Kickers lose their mojo all the time (sometimes for good, a la Vanderjagt after his playoff miss), but I’m hoping his struggles this year were a product of still not rounding into form after his hip surgery rather than a problem above the neck

by NinoP on Jan 26, 2010 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

Colts will bring back Vinateiri

The guy will be a HOF kicker someday, Cowboys will be able to sign Stover if they want him. I say sign him and let Folk try out again, clearly the guy is a good kicker who just went into a funk. Maybe one year practicing on his mechanics will help.

A Nice Consenses

I would hope we are in the position to take the best available and not reach on any position.

O line whiffsarecommon in the first round and the only starter we have drafted is Geroude. Some of our best O line of the past have been late picks or undrafted free agents.

We need a CB to groom to back up Newman.

A safety would not be bad and if Thomas drops below 20 we shouldmove up to get him.

Of course we need a kicker.Carney did a good job with New Orleans and could be an answer.

We need a kick returner Chicago has two that excel in this area so maybe a trade or not.

What we need is some help from this draft as we didn’t get much out of last years draft.

McGee as a back QB could be improved on greatly.Look how well our cast off Matt Moore did forBuffalo.

by TCB Orange Dino on Jan 26, 2010 3:26 PM CST reply actions

Matt Moore plays for Carolina btw
We need a CB to groom to back up Newman.

We have Newman, Jenkins, and Scandrick at CB, I don’t think CB should be one of our top priorities, maybe deep in the draft.
The good thing is this year, we actually have first day picks, we can get some real talent, so I am very excited for this year’s draft.

Golden Tate can believe it's not butter.

by labone7 on Jan 26, 2010 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

Good points but...

Carney is probably done. He’s old and I don’t think he is interested in kicking anymore.

People are reading too much into the kick returner thing. I’m not opposed to it, but there is something wrong with the blocking. Felix Jones was one of the top kickoff returners of all time in college.

Moore has never played for Buffalo.
