It's Senior Bowl Week for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys' Scouts

Get your draft caps on because it's Senior Bowl week! While the Dallas coaching staff heads out to Miami for the Pro Bowl, Jerry Jones and his team of scouts are in Mobile, Alabama for the 2010 Senior Bowl.

The game is set to kickoff on January 30 at 3 PM (CST).

After watching the Vikings' defensive line outperform the Cowboys' offensive line, I think it's safe to say that we all expect Jones and his staff to draft a tackle and an interior lineman or two...or three. By the looks of it, this could be a good draft to do so.

The general consensus seems to be that the Cowboys need--and will go and get--an offensive tackle in the first round. If this is indeed their approach, the team will likely have their eyes fixed on two small school behemoths for most of the weekend--Vladimir Ducasse of UMass, and Mike Iupati of Idaho. Iupati actually spent his college career at Idaho at guard, but many scouts project him as a tackle.

Ducasse spent his college career at tackle, though many see him as a guard in the NFL. Both fit into Dallas's traditional mold for offensive linemen, which is to say they're immense in size. Iupati, a native of American Samoa, stand six foot six and weighs in at 325 pounds; Ducasse, a native of Port Au Prince, Haiti, is six foot five and 330.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

The DMN's Gerry Fraley speculates that the Cowboys brass took interest when Mike Lupati weighed in.

It may have been only a coincidence, but the Cowboys contingent perked up when Idaho offensive guard Mike Iupati took the stage. Iupati was measured at 6 feet 5 and 325 pounds. Iupati was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, given to the nation's top lineman.

Mocking Dan at SBN's Mocking The Draft has this to say about Lupati:

Idaho guard Mike Iupati had a 35-inch arm length. How important is that? Example:

Eugene Monroe 34″

Jason Smith 33 3/4″

Andre Smith 35 5/8″

Michael Oher 33 1/2"

[snip]

There is no question that Iupati is considered by most to be the best guard available in the draft. However, he gained that status playing against the below-average opponents of the Western Athletic Conference. Iupati is a strong, athletic guard, but he’ll have to prove it against the best competition he’s ever faced. Play well, and he could be a first-round pick.

The profile, here, is a great read on Ducasse, who was born and raised in Haiti.

Arrowhead Pride reports that the Chiefs, Panthers, and Jaguars met with Ducasse on Sunday night.

This scouting report projects Ducasse going somewhere in Rounds 2-4.

WalterFootball.com breaks down the weigh-ins by position.

The site's writer, Matt McGuire, previews the offense. Let's take a look at his description of the wide receiver group, shall we?

The star of this group has to be LSU's Brandon LaFell whom I have given a 4-star, first-round grade. He is a big, physical target with underrated speed after the catch. He has a chance to really separate himself from the pack this week.

Mardy Gilyard from Cincinnati needs to show me that he can maintain concentration and show soft hands. I personally feel he is a little overrated, but you never know what can happen in practice.

Ole Miss's Dexter McCluster is a very fast player who finds ways to maximize yardage when you put the ball in his hands. He is a slot receiver at the next level.

I feel like Tulane's Jeremy Williams is the sleeper of this group. He is a good route runner and has great body control.

Two more to watch are The Citadel's Andre Roberts and UAB's Joe Webb who will be making the conversion from quarterback to receiver. Miami's Jimmy Graham is an athletic freak, but he needs to show consistency and make plays with the heat on. USC's Anthony McCoy and Alabama's Colin Peek round out the tight end class thus far.

Gilyard has been a very productive receiver.

Gilyard, a first team All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association, was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Year for the second straight year this season and was a first team All-BIG EAST selection at wide receiver. He led the conference and finished second in the country with 2,690 all-purpose yards and was also tops in the BIG EAST in receiving yards (1,191), receiving yards per game (91.62), receptions per game (6.69), punt return average (12.63 ypg) and kickoff return yardage (1,281).

The Bunnell, Florida native finished his career as Cincinnati's all-time leader in receptions (204), receiving touchdowns (25), receiving yards (3,003), all-purpose yards (5,904), kickoff returns (93) and kickoff return TDs (4).

Evidently, Gilyard weighed in much lighter than scouts expected.

Mardy Gilyard , also came in very light. While certainly elusive, scouts wonder if he'll be able to get off press coverage in the slot at only 179 pounds.

Some players, on the other hand, impressed the scouts with their weigh-ins.

Florida State outside linebacker Dekoda Watson , boasting arguably the most impressive physique of either roster, surprised by measuring in at 6-2, 232 pounds. He had been listed by the Seminoles at 226 pounds and some scouts had estimated that he'd actually weigh in under 220.

NFL teams looking for bullish backs will be certain to keep an eye on Mississippi State's Anthony Dixon and Oregon LaGarrette Blount , each of whom measured in at an eye-popping 245 pounds. Their weight certainly wasn't due to extra slices of pizza following their seasons. Trim waistlines and thick lower bodies should aid in their transition to the NFL.

Utah pass rusher Koa Misi , who played defensive end for the Utes, seems to be taking his likely conversion to outside linebacker seriously. Expected to weigh in at 6-2, 263, but instead came in nearly an inch taller and at a relatively svelt 243 pounds.

Guards Jon Asamoa (Illinois) and John Jerry (Mississippi) each weighed in lighter than expected.

Here are some photos from today's weigh-in.

The National Football Post has the full results of the weigh-ins with some analysis. Here's a snippet of what they say about Ducasse and Notre Dame's OT Sam Young.

Another guy who seems to be on the verge of a really big week is Massachusetts offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse. The guy definitely looked the part today at 6-4 5/8 and 326 pounds.

Finally, at nearly 6-8 and only 305 pounds, is it any wonder why Notre Dame offensive tackle Sam Young struggles to anchor on contact? He looked really thin through the lower half and has a frame that lacks bulk throughout.

Another great site that previews the Senior Bowl is NFL Draft Countdown.com. Switching it up to the defensive side of the ball, I checked out what Scott Wright had to say about the Bowl's safeties.

At safety USC’s Taylor Mays may be the best prospect on Mobile this year, regardless of position. By going back for his senior season Mays opened his game up to additional scrutiny and as a result of that overanalysis his stock has dropped. However, this is a perfect opportunity for Mays to silence all of those doubters and reestablish himself as one of the premier prospects in this class.

Another guy to watch out for is Nebraska’s Larry Asante. A rocked up, in-the-box strong safety, there has been talk that Asante could come off the board as early as the second or third round but he may need to convince others that he’s worthy of such a lofty grade this week.

Then of course there is Florida State’s Myron Rolle, the Rhodes Scholar who hasn’t played in over a year while going to school at Oxford.

SBNation's NFL page says that "all eyes will be on Tebow".

After a sterling NCAA career with the Florida Gators, Tebow must now prove to NFL scouts that he has the tools to be a NFL QB, not just a mobile college signal-caller who relies on his legs as much as his arm. Tebow needs to show he can make all the throws with authority, and that he has the intangibles to make plays and move the chains without resorting to taking off out of the pocket.

Starting today, coverage of the practices will be shown on the NFL Network - as will the game, itself, on Saturday. Also, "Path to the Draft" is scheduled to air at 8 PM (EST) tonight. Mike Mayock will begin reviewing the practices while offering his always insightful observations. If you don't have NFL Network, you should be able to watch the show on its website after it airs.

I will leave you with some fun links to help you get to know the players. Enjoy!

possible draft target...

i know we already have felix, marion, and TC but i think we should seriously look into possibly trading one of them and drafting CJ Spiller from clemson because he can return punts, return kickoffs, catch like a WR, never fumbles, and is a threat to go the distance any time he touches the ball… might not seem practical but he would be a matchup nightmare and help out our return game tremendously!

by tnew41 on Jan 25, 2010 4:52 PM CST reply actions

He's a first rounder...

I say this without hesitation.. that isn’t happening.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Jan 25, 2010 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

I'm a Clemson die hard fan.

CJ would be nice, but no, he’s going in the early 1st round. Very early. San Francisco, maybe?

I do recommend Jacoby Ford from Clemson, though. Superfast (NCAA track champion) WR, KR, and PR. I’d see his speed putting him in the 2nd round. Don’t mistake him for a part-time football player though. He’s a full-time WR for Clemson, and was basically Clemson’s only real weapon other than CJ Spiller.

by mdlusk on Jan 25, 2010 8:18 PM CST up reply actions

i would like to trade

Our first rounder, and marion, or roy, to possibly get up higher, and draft the best blue chip tackle available.

by TONYINCC on Jan 25, 2010 5:04 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Why would anyone take on their contracts?

Dallas might trade a 1 and a 1 next year and move up to the top 10

by DIRE WOLF on Jan 25, 2010 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

well they could structure

Their contracts to make most of their salary go into the uncapped year, so that the remainder of their contracts are workable against the future cap.

MB3 has slowed down and

Roy aint worth a damn and they both make a lot of money. I’m telling it aint going to happen. Would you do the deal?

by DIRE WOLF on Jan 25, 2010 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

depends on the team

I mean if my team had the 14th pick or in that area, they usually have several needs. If they need a rb and a safety. If they feel their highest rated player will still be there at 27, they may fill the hole w MB3, as a stop gap and pick up their safety at 27.

Just a scenario, which the money is much less in the back end of the first round also.

by TONYINCC on Jan 25, 2010 6:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Trust me

there are teams that would take Williams. St.Louis, Carolina, Tampa just to name a few. Trading him could make sense

I don't have a chart in front of me but I don't think

anyone can move up 17 spots in round 1 for only another first round pick. Thats a huge leap and a huge price tag. JMO

by Cowick22 on Jan 26, 2010 1:18 AM CST up reply actions

That's not going to happen.

I don’t see Jerry trading up to the top-10 with the rookie pay scale the way it is. It’s dumb anyways, it’s not like this draft is real top heavy.

by DoomsdayD75 on Jan 25, 2010 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

We would have to go too high to get him...

And even if he did fall, I don’t think our best pick is a RB who can play some wideout since WR/RB/KR is definitely not one of our biggest needs.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Cody

Someone smarter than I should do a post on why Terrance Cody would be a terrible pick for the Cowboys in the first round and that Ratliff is not a better DE than NT and it would be a mistake to draft Cody so that Ratliff can be moved to DE. Drafting the Cody is all the rage over at Mocking the Draft blog.

by jf55510 on Jan 25, 2010 5:05 PM CST reply actions

Ratliff is more of a matchup problem for centers and guards rather than guards and tackles, so putting him at end could nullify his strength.

Also, the 1st rounder should be used on somebody that the team needs. They can get a solid backup NT later in the draft or in free agency. This team is already good at stuffing the run, so spending such a high pick on a run-stuffing NT wouldn’t make much sense.

BTB League Consolation Ladder Champ...thought you knew.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 25, 2010 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

Just Because Rat Is A Matchup Problem in the Middle

. . . does not mean he would not be a terror at DE. I agree that using an elite pick on a run stuffer is not warranted. That is not to say that adding Wilfork by trade is out of the question. While we have done OK in stuffing the run, the defense needs something more to get to the next level. I believe more strength in the middle, and physicality . . . freeing up Rat to attack from the edge . . . is a necessary ingredient.

by Iowacowboy on Jan 25, 2010 5:34 PM CST up reply actions

That's true.

Wade like to moves Ware around alot at the LB spot. Imagine if he could do the same with somebody on the line, like Rat. A big plug of a NT would allow him to do that.

BTB League Consolation Ladder Champ...thought you knew.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 25, 2010 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

So Many Times

Dallas is not playing the traditional three man front anyway. Having Rat available as a interchangeable part to the various sets that Wade uses, whether it is on the edge or from the interior, would be a huge asset. That 3 – 4 gets stale at times . . . as when we saw All Pro Hutchinson, heading up field, roaming free in the Dallas defensive backfield because no one was scheduled to block him. Imagine Wilfork in the middle, Igor and whomever on the ends, and Rat penciled in as a roving DT type . . . doubt this would allow a guard to roam up field ten yards preparing the way for the ball carrier to take it to the next level.

by Iowacowboy on Jan 26, 2010 7:24 AM CST up reply actions

after suh

Demolished the longhorn line, I was unimpressed with cody against the same unit.

by TONYINCC on Jan 25, 2010 5:13 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Suh and Cody are totally different players.

All Cody does is stuff the run he does nothing as far as pass rush goes.

Suh is so good he could play 4-3 tackle or a 3-4 end.

If Cody goes in the first round it’s soley because teams are desperate for nose tackles. I don’t think he’s any better than Ron Brace.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Jan 25, 2010 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

Moving Ratliff`s freakin` retarded

You don`t move around core players you build around them!…Yes Spears has been a bit of a bust and yes Jay`s very quick for a NT but that doesn`t mean you sacrifice the chemistry we have there. OT/ FS and KR`s are our priority right? For me we take the best value we can or like Dire Wolf`s said trade two 1st`s to get the best OT in the draft.

by voidhelix on Jan 25, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

Allowing Rat To Be Dominated By Two Blockers Is Retarded

An offense can move Rat out of the way anytime it wants; it simply assigns two blockers and Rat can pushed aside. I don’t want Cody but I would make a move for Wilfork. This would allow Rat to freely attack the offense without constantly facing double teams and give him a certain amount of unpredictability.

by Iowacowboy on Jan 26, 2010 7:28 AM CST up reply actions

If Rat is capable of 8sacks at the end (and he is)

They will find away to double team him. If we want single blocking on Rat then blitz both A gaps or slide our DE over the Guards. When we rush or front 3 and both Ware and Spencer he is singled up.

KICK ASS every day!!!

Apparently he weighed in at a trim 370

today at the Senior bowl. I’ll pass, dude will eat himself out of the league in two years. Plus he’ll only play for maybe 40% of the snaps. No way would I use a high pick on the guy.

by DoomsdayD75 on Jan 25, 2010 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

I've been keeping an eye on Iupati...

..since Kiper mentioned him a few weeks ago. I like the idea of drafting him to replace Kosier next year and then letting him and free battle for the LT spot in the future*. The nice thing about Free is that there may already be one improvement over the current starting 5 on the roster. Spending a premium pick to get a blue-chip LG could remake/upgrade 2/5ths of the O-line in one offseason. While there would be some growing pains, it seems to be worth it to me.

*future: possibly as early as training camp 2010.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 25, 2010 6:13 PM CST reply actions

wild card is

Brewster, if he can force playing time that would be outstanding. I think gurode may need to be replaced also.

I don’t know how logical, but maybe we can start an oline rotation, to keep them fresh, and healthier throughout the year.

by TONYINCC on Jan 25, 2010 6:24 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Agree on Brewster.

But I’d be hesitant to count on him going into next year. Seems like he’s probably going to need another year of development before he could realistically equal the sort of blue-chipper I’m hoping the Cowboys find for the OL this offseason.

Also, while Gurode does seem to be a little overrated, he’s still one of the better centers out there. I feel like we’re more in the “draft a backup who could eventually replace” search at the C instead of the “find someone who allows you to cut” search.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Gurode won't be replaced.

He’s too good. At worst they would move him to guard, if we ended up with a talented center.

Gurodes sucked at OG

I don’t see him moving from C, nor do I see a rookie pushing him to the bench. Center will not be an early pick.

Don't put too much stock in the Senior Bowl

If I were a scout, i would use college season footage alone. I would not pay much attention to the Senior Bowl or the combine. Check out this write-up from 2006:

Every year several players come away from Senior Bowl week practices with disappointing results, and this year was no exception. A terror on the college level, Mathias Kiwanuka of Boston College was dominated by opponents daily. Considered a top 10 pick before the week, Kiwanuka is likely to plummet into the middle of Round 1. The nation’s sack leader, Elvis Dumervil, was also unheard from throughout the week. And except for Cutler, none of the other quarterbacks distinguished themselves.

by JimmyJohnson on Jan 25, 2010 8:03 PM CST reply actions

Nevertheless, about a third of last year's first rounders all participated in the Senior Bowl.
B.J. Raji – DT – Boston College – 9 – Green Bay
Brian Cushing – LB – USC – 15 – Houston
Larry English – LB – Northern Illinois – 16 – San Diego
Robert Ayers – DE – Tennessee – 18 – Denver
Brandon Pettigrew – TE – Oklahoma St – 20 – Detroit
Alex Mack – OC – California – 21 – Cleveland
Michael Oher – OT – Ole Miss – 23 – Baltimore
Peria Jerry – DT – Ole Miss – 24 – Atlanta
Clay Matthews – LB – USC – 26 – Green Bay
Eric Wood – OC Louisville – 28 – Buffalo

the question is

whether Columbo’s last game was a fluke?

If not then Free can replace Flozell and we can draft either a center or guard. We could move Gurode to guard if need be. We could then draft another CB in the second and a WR in the third.

We Need Both Free Agent/Trade and Draft

Rafa says Donald Penn is unlikely. Maybe but it is true he is unsigned . . . and if his team has to franchise him, this invokes huge dollars for one year with no gurantee you can sign the player down the road. Teams trade players they think they can’t sign. Dallas has a window to the championship that is open now; there is no time to be developing offensive linemen. I worry Flo is way over the hill. The last two years, injuries have killed us. Even with Free’s success and the possibility of Brewster, I can see Dallas adding one or two veterans, and still using an elite pick on an offensive lineman.

I don't think Hatcher's contract is up.

Spears and Bowen are restricted, so they could easily be tendered. You gotta think the coaches like the progress that Bowen has made.

If they have their eye on a DE in the draft, perhaps they put a 2nd round tender on both these guys and see if anyone bites.

Consider That No One Has Knocked Out Proctor

as the swing guard or back-up center. This proves Proctor is not as bad as most posters say he is and the talent on the bench is woefully inadequate should serious injury arise. This is why I think Dallas needs to make a trade for a veteran; actually two veterans. One to replace Flo now and one to challenge Gurode now. Then Dallas could use its one to grab a long term LT prospect . . . say Bulaga.

by Iowacowboy on Jan 26, 2010 7:42 AM CST up reply actions

that he’s better as a swing G/C than their other options. Having watched him get blown up a lot last season, I think he’s a solid technician but unable to hold his ground against a power pass rush. Against the Vikes we likely would have seen Kitna get his first action. Maybe McGee and Crayton too.

I am continually torn on Mays...

On the one hand, his measurables are clearly there and before this year, his tape surely looked like that of a top-ten pick. On the other hand, his game tape this year has been scrutinized and many scouts have discovered quite a few flaws that could certainly keep him from being the next great USC safety (poor angles, lack of great instincts, etc.).

Ultimately though, I do not feel that Taylor Mays will be a huge bust. He has so much natural talent, and I don’t think it helped that USC did not really use him up in the box that much where he could make plays (he was counted on to be the last line of defense for them). I think if paired with a good coverage safety (much like Roy Williams alongside Darren Woodson), Taylor Mays has a shot to be a very good playmaking strong safety.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Jan 26, 2010 2:26 AM CST up reply actions

Mays is Sean Taylor with a much better head.

He will run under 4.4 and hits like a truck. He may never be elite, but he’s way better than the Roy ‘Thong’ Williams in coverage. He will be an enforcer that can cover sideline to sideline.

I think a coverarge safety can be had in the second or third rounds

He wrote an apology letter that was published in the Oregon Emerald.

In it, he described how the punch and ensuing suspension had forced him to take a look at himself—as a player, a competitor, a man. It was a really mature, well thought out letter.

It was after the game and the Oregon offense was frustrated all game.

The Boise St. kid, with his helmet off, tapped Blount on the shoulder and said something to him—even though it was obvious that he was already steaming. Blount then rocked him and went wild. The students in the stands were egging him on and if it wasn’t for the security personnel, he would’ve went in the stands. Teammates tried to hold him back, but one got pushed and it was just all bad.

All because he hates to lose.

What is wrong with Bruce Campbell (very athletic) or Bulaga from Iowa? Anthony Davis is looking more and more like a top 10 pick, so he is out.

One other thing…if the NFL does not get a labor agreement in place by March 2011, will the NFL draft still be held? If not, then trading a first round pick next season would be like trading nothing for something, right?

was following his draft staus last year closely

Rolle was a big time stud recuit out of HS, and was a solid if not spectacular 3 year player for FSU. I was hoping he’d be draft eligible LAST year, and the ghost of Tex Schramm or Gil Brandt would visit Jerry & convince him to take a late round flyer on the kid just to retain his rights when he returned from his Rhodes.

I don’t think the year off will affect him nearly as some are speculating (particularly when many NFL prospects have also dabbled in minor league baseball), but I am curious to see how his measurables pan out at the combine, since he never seemed to demonstrate the extra acceleration to the ball in college that most of the elite CF-type free safeties possess.

by Antonio S on Jan 26, 2010 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

I say bring Folk back for a workout

Let him have another shot. Maybe it was just the injury and his psyche. I think he deserves another shot though, you know, competition in Training Camp. Another Idea is Matt Stover. Seems to be doing well for Indy and they are not going to keep both him and Vinateri.

by Dare2Dream on Jan 26, 2010 9:18 AM CST up reply actions

I'm down with giving Folk another chance.

What sucks about having an inconsistent kicking game is it hurts the running/ball control part of the offense. Do all that work to get down to the 30 and then come up empty.

Those 3 points and the ensuing kickoff can really keep momentum on your side.

BTB League Consolation Ladder Champ...thought you knew.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 26, 2010 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

And after a missed FG, the other team is practically in position themselves.

With the rules giving them the ball where you kick from, they get the ball at the 37. They only need 30 yards to be in range to attempt a FG themselves. That’s a 6 point swing.

My Opinion:

Unless Dallas is 100% sold on a OG I predict they go DL or FS early in the draft.

4 round mock:

1. Corey Wootton, DE/DT, Northwestern
2. Morgan Burnett, FS, Georgia Tech
3. J.D. Walton, C, Baylor
4. Will Barker, OT, Virginia
