man it would be nice to replace hamlin in the lineup with a ball hawk safety

why am I not surprised Mr. Huff

but in all seriousness I would love that pick. Has he declared for the draft or is he going to play baseball?

by sduncan24 on Jan 26, 2010 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

i think you are thinking about that florida wr

Shipley has said he’s playing football.

by alanTdot. on Jan 26, 2010 11:19 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

No, I was just wondering

I assumed he had declared since Kiper and others had him on their mock drafts, but I also know he is a standout baseball player at Texas. I am glad he declared, I hated when Jeff Samarga decided to play baseball over football a couple years back.

by sduncan24 on Jan 27, 2010 9:01 AM CST up reply actions

If Shipley is in the 3rd he'd be a great pick

Something tells me he’s going to be a 1st round player. He’s been a star athlete for years at a star program. He’s probably faster than they realize, I’d expect his 40 time to set them straight

by AustonianAggie on Jan 27, 2010 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

I'm thinking 2nd round is closer.

I think his age and injury history will prohibit him from being a 1st rounder.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Jan 27, 2010 9:18 AM CST up reply actions

Plus,

he’s probably the 5th WR to come off the board at best.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Jan 27, 2010 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

I haven't been following the draft boards

and didn’t realize shipley was already 24, but he’s been such a reliable player at a high level, even in big games (like vs Alabama) that I’d think he’d be picked some where towards the end of the first. If he’s the 5th WR off the board, theres a good chance he’s getting picked around 27,28,29 and the 6th will come off at 32

by AustonianAggie on Jan 27, 2010 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

There is no way he's going in the 1st

There might only be 2 or 3 WR’s who look like legit 1st’s right now. You also have to factor in Shipley’s age and the injury history. He’ll be lucky to go in the 2nd, but more likely 3rd or later depending on the combine.
Not taking anything away from his college career, but teams are more about gauging future contributions, and he might have maxed out his potential.

that being said I think a 3rd rounder wouldn’t be reaching for him.

i'd LOVE

deandre mcdaniel but i haven’t seen anywhere that he’s entered the draft this year since he was only a junior last year so i think he’s returning to clemson for his senior year but i’m not 100% on that

Mardy Gilyard

I am not a fan. Apparently he doesn’t run good routes, and he weighed in at 178 pounds. Plus, he’s also a project considering he played in a spread offense, and in the bowl game he could not get open against Florida. On the other hand, I really like Jordan Shipley. Despite playing in the spread offense, he found a way to make plays against Alabama. He would be a nice “Wes Welker” type receiver for Romo; he can also return kicks too.

"Oh I would have said something to Buddy but he didn't stand on the field long enough, he put his BIG FAT REAR END into the dressing room!"---Jimmy Johson, November 23, 1989.

by Rohpuri on Jan 26, 2010 4:12 PM CST reply actions

I actually think Mardy Gilyard would be great additon to the offense

Miles Austin used to be perceived as someone who stretched the field, but he’s really been a consistent and fast possession receiver. Gilyard would give that deep threat and I would love to see more of Romo long bombs, that would open up our running game so well.

Golden Tate can believe it's not butter.

by labone7 on Jan 26, 2010 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

i agree regarding Gilyard

he is much better than Shipley at special teams and I think has more upside due to his speed and size advantage. There is a reason he is projected a round prior to Shipley. And if he is a bit of a longer term project than Shipley who cares. We have plenty of other player solidly ahead of either of them if they were drafted and in the arena where they may play (special teams) Gilyard is better. I would love to see him piked in the 2nd.

by Becho on Jan 26, 2010 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

Mardy G

I live in Cincy and have watched a lot of their games this year, I’ve never heard a lot of talk about him running bad routes, but then again, this city was so hyped up on kickin’ ass all year, I’m not completely surprised. I think drafting him, letting him KR/PR for a year, learning how to run the slot from Cray, (they have very similar builds I think, Cray is listed at 204? No way..) and I think Mardy could be a solid addition. Very good kid too that is more than willing to put in the work to achieve, which is always a good addition. He has a really good back story too about when he first got to college and how he worked to overcome it. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/paul_daugherty/12/02/mardy-gilyard/index.html

by JLMax09 on Jan 26, 2010 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

I'd go for Verner in the 3rd...

I’ve watched him play at UCLA for 4 years, and he has top-flight speed and good instincts/ball skills. He could be a potential starter down the road, or be our nickel QB once Newman is done. You can never have too many quality CBs.

Carpet Bomb approach

that is one of Rafael’s comments on how we fix weak positions. I like the OL Carpet Bomb tactic in April.

We have young and talented players coming off the bench in the DB. Exception FS, I like Alan Ball but he is too small to be a long time FS in this league, talent yes suited for FS no.

I like our WR corps with Ogletree getting more work and experience, I don’t care what the Miss Grundys out there say.

So…. 325 + pound BOMBS AWAY in 2010!

by Travlr on Jan 26, 2010 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

We'd be carpet bombing 2 positions

OT and DB. What a plus it would be to hit on all the picks like we did 2 years ago. Plus, I’d love to get Jordan Shipley. He shredded Alabama with a freakin freshman QB.

by Damnsammit on Jan 27, 2010 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

yes seriously

There is a good chance we’re going to lose either Spears or Bowens in FA and I think we can find a better backup to Rat than Siavii.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jan 27, 2010 8:34 AM CST up reply actions

Spears and Bowen are both restricted FA

Doubt Jerry lets Spears go, and if he does he will be compensated by a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

by Damnsammit on Jan 27, 2010 8:53 AM CST up reply actions

the point is we're going to lose one if not both

once they become UFAs, so they might as well start developing depth now, same with our OL as those guys aren’t going to be playing a lot longer.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jan 27, 2010 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

I agree about the OL, but..

I think Jerry can wrap up Spears to a 4 year deal similar to Olshansky’s.

That means we would have those 3 young guys all locked up for a few more years. Sure they need more depth, but the OL is more pressing of an issue to me.

by Damnsammit on Jan 27, 2010 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

I agree OL is more pressing

but there’s depth at DL in this draft, thats where a lot of your quality will be.

Outside of OL, the Cowboys just need to take the best players available on defense and WR. They’re backfield and TEs are set.

Jordon Shipley

I like the Campbell pick and a safety in the 2nd. I really, really want them to draft Jordon Shipley. I just have a feeling he will be a star. He is a Texas kid that had to grow up loving the Cowboys. He is intellegent, has good hands, gets open, can return punts, and will become a fan favorite. I am not sure how long he will last. He would be perfect for the slot and IMO is a huge upgrade over Crayton.

by cowboy1966 on Jan 26, 2010 8:40 PM CST reply actions

shipley is an upgrade over Crayton?

Its statements like this that make me fear the draft.

Crayton has the best hands on the team. He is a proven NFL reciever.

shipley is a guy who has played in a spotlight at Texas.
He is a ‘good looking’ guy. He may have a good future in the NFL.

He is NOT an upgrade over Crayton. In time? Perhaps.

Crayton is very undervalued

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

by aussie_cowboy on Jan 26, 2010 11:39 PM CST up reply actions

one thing though about Shipley.............................................................

he runs a 4.4 and great routes plus he has great hands. He also played high school football with our backup QB-McGee. Kinda interesting when you think about it huh if you could develop the two of them. Some people say he’s old but he just turned 24 in Dec. so I wouldn’t exactly call that old.

by texstar on Jan 27, 2010 12:39 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah it is.

Although if he is rated high enough, you get him.

At least he has low mileage because he missed two years of college.

I’m personally in the group that thinks that you grab a WR if he offers great value, but you don’t specifically need to target one right now.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Jan 27, 2010 8:40 AM CST up reply actions

a couple of thoughts

1) how can he possibly predict who we’ll get with in the 3rd round with any kind of reasonable accuracy? amazing that he can get paid to do this!

2) re: carpet bombing. while i agree that we need more than one new acquisition on the OL, does anyone remember that 2000 CB draft – goodrich, lattimore, edwards? i’d rather get good players at a position of strength than crappy ones at a position of need….

by g8tgod on Jan 26, 2010 8:58 PM CST reply actions

Here it goes.

On the NFL Network tonight they trotted out a Bill Walsh superlative: If he dominates in high school, then he dominates in college, he’ll dominate in the NFL. The object of the quote: Tim Tebow. Even though he’s not playing well at the senior bowl, he says its because he’s trying to show different things to the scouts. Both analysts agreed someone is going to scoop him up in the first round.

I wouldn't bet against Tim Tebow

hopefully for his sake he’ll get a chance to ride the pine.

But it’s also easy to see who might draft him: The Raiders

by AustonianAggie on Jan 27, 2010 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

I not betting against him either

that he’ll be a good player someday, however, you don’t draft QBs in the first rd to sit on the bench for several years, you take those guys later.

I’d draft Tebow, but not until the mid rds because he isn’t going to start as a QB in the NFL right away, his throwing mechanics have to be totally revamped just like Romo when he came into the league.

It will take him at least three years before he has a shot to start and be successful.

My preferences in a WR are

- Fast but not terribly quick
- Runs poor pass routes
- Has plenty of height but alligator-arms it on high balls and across the middle
- Drops balls in critical situations
- Costs more than all the other WRs together.

CARPET BOMB O LINE

It works if you have a good staff and scouts (unlike 2000) and Jerruh is not going wild.

We can carry 10 O linemen if we have to. So we could keep 4 rookies there. Counting either Free or Colombo as the backup Tackle right now. so draft 5 or 6 of them or what we get in UDFA. Have them fight it out in camp.

Our O line not only broke down against the Vikings which was a warning in itself, but remember all the fun we had trying to score from the One in numerous games? Work needs to be done there and drastic measures such as carpet bombing are required.

Also I have to be honest and wonder if Houck has lost his touch. This is a big and heavy O line which is his trademark and they have underperformed.

Great way to project a draft

I love the multiple options in the second and third rounds. All draft projections should be like this and, after the first ten picks or so, the first round should have 2-3 options as well. It’s such a crap shoot that to project one particular guy going to a particlar team 30 or more picks into the draft is kinda silly.
