BuckeyelCO asked a very thoughtful and intelligent question when asking why he would be considered a bandwagon fan by folks on BGN. I read each response and determined that the truth needed to be told about this topic. The thing Cowboys fans should have first questioned is the source of the nickname. I mean are Viking fans caliing Cowboys fans from other states bandwagoners? Of course not. Bear fans maybe? Nope. Just Philly fans. So where does this hatred come from?
First of alI I am a Cowboy fan and a Yankee fan. I am a Yankee fan because my dad was and a Cowboy fan because of Bob Hayes. There was no bandwagon to jump on when Hayes was drafted in the seventh round in 1964, but I digress.
To understand the hatred of Philly fans one only has to look at the record of the sport franchises in that city. You see, Philly has sports teams that are LOSERS!! Now the plight of the Eagles is well known so we need not go there. How about the Phillies you say? Well, they just happen to have the most losses of any team in professional sports history! (Roll that around on your tongue for a minute) Founded in 1883, the Phillies have won 2 (count em) two world Series. that is in 127 years. Their first was in 1980 or 97 years after their inception. The second was in 2008. However, the Good Lord seeing the error of his ways, quickly returned them to their rightful loser status in 2009 as they lost to the Yankees who have won 27 World Series. The Big Apple strikes again By the way the Yankees were founded in 1915.
How about hockey you ask? Oh yes, the Philadelphia Flyers a.k.a. The Broad Street Bullies. Now this team also has 2 titles 1974 and 1975. Howeveer, they have won numerous division titles only to lose "the big one" when it counted most. (Sound familiar?) Yes, it is now 34 years since the flyers won the Stanley Cup.
Basketball and the Sixers you say? Oh they have won titles in 1955, 1966, and 1983. That is a plethora of titles in Philadelphia. Of course only an old schooler like me will remember Philly trying to go for two in a row in 67 and being up 3-1 in the final series, only to choke it all away to none other than the Boston Celtics and lose, again.
So is it any wonder that Philly fans have picked Dallas and its fans as the object of their wrath? A southern city that has only been in the league since 1960 and yet has 8 S.B. appearances to 2 for the Eagles, both losses I might add. You see Philly fans have only disappointment to look forward to even when the seasons change. So what do they do? Attack the fan base, that's what. Some Cowboy fans are falling for that old high school trick. Can't win the game, win the fight with the fans. Nice try, but I for one, am not buying
