Time to reconsider Jared Gaither?

I saw the following article on PFT regarding Jared Gaither:

Jared Gaither may be running out time Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 1, 2010 1:53 PM ET It sounds like Ravens coach John Harbaugh has grown weary of starting tackle Jared Gaither.

Previously criticized for his work ethic, Gaither has barely practiced all year because of a mysterious back injury.  He's been the subject of trade rumors, but hasn't stepped on the field enough for anyone to want him.

Gaither practiced Wednesday, then aggravated his back.  He's going to see another specialist.  At some point, the Ravens may just choose to end Gaither's season.  Ravens doctors can't determine the problem.

"Obviously the clock is ticking on something like that," coach John Harbaugh said. "His injury's been a mystery. It's been almost 2 weeks since Dr. Watkins in LA said would be the outside limit."

If Baltimore's offensive line was playing better this season, the Ravens may have already given up waiting for Gaither to return.

Is it time to offer a 4th round pick for this guy?  They previosly wanted a 1 or a 2.  If he's in the doghouse, maybe we can get him on the cheap and motivate him.  He's only 24 years old and has a ton of talent.  Colombo, on the other hand, is 32 and is wearing down.  I think it's worth some consideration.  Even if he doesnt pan out, he would be well worth the risk of a 4th rounder.  I would even make it conditional where it could grow to a 3rd.  His upside is big.

I like this idea

Is playing smart too much to ask?

by silverblue5 on Oct 1, 2010 4:16 PM CDT reply actions

are you kidding?

a 4th round pick for a LT with a bad back, if its for real. naw…at most a 7th or wait until they cut him…….

plus if he has attitude problems…..why get him. we need motivated players, not lazy ones.

by CowboysFanatic on Oct 1, 2010 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

Yep.

I would have to see Colombo struggle before even considering a move like this. Plus, I think I would rather not trade a decent draft pick for a guy who has an injury that people can’t figure out; especially if that guy will probably still be available in some regards this offseason.

yeah you're right

and actually i was thinking on a 5th (bad typing) but yeah maybe he will out of town however, so why not wait?

by ratware on Oct 1, 2010 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

idk there is alot of upside though

might be better to just wait until free agency next year or if they cut him
still a 4th for the guy seems like a steal
id try to give them a 5th and make it a conditional pick, basically the same trade the Skins got for the guy we should of got cough Jammal Brown cough

by Archie Barberio on Oct 1, 2010 5:42 PM CDT reply actions

Why?

He wants big money, wants to start and has some kinda problem with his back, which can end his career. Don’t throw away picks.

Why not?

We’ve basically been throwing away picks when drafting O-linemen the last few years anyway. A 4th or 5th for Gaither wouldn’t be bad, considering his upside.

4th Round Draft Picks:

2007 – Doug Free
2008 – Tashard Choice
2009 – Victor Butler
2010 – Akwasi Owusu-Ansah

Only one of those guys plays O-line.

real TALK....

thz is his contract year.. so a player would try to play out to get his dollar chips up.. but thz guy cant even make it on the field.. if im JJ i wud stay away.. 7th at the most but still u gotta pay the guy next year or y send the pic just to have the guy on your ir thz year ot risk cuttn a player?

plus we r saturated with Tackles.. barron( prob on the team bc he can play RT & LT), free, columbo, brewster( a RT but might go inside to G next year), young( who to b honest every1 was really high on)… but we only have 1 back up guard holland who mite start next sunday..

I say put a pic or trade for and interior lineman

by lostar2009 on Oct 3, 2010 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I was with you until you said we were saturated with tackles.

Aside from Colombo and Free, we have a bunch of bench warmers. And Colombo is breaking down right in front of our eyes. We need to think about the entire O-line, not just the Guards and Centers. 4 of our starters are on the wrong side of 30 and 2 of them are becoming injury prone. None of them have a clear replacement that is currently on the roster. It’s time to start thinking about the future of the O-line.

to be honest....

the only reason JJ went with Barron ova Brewster was the experience… And from what i hear Young would hav been ova Brewster if he didnt hurt his leg during the Preseason. And the reason y Barron is on thz team if ureally think about it is the fact he can play LT.. now put it together it make sense.

Now dont get me rong i wud luv to hav a HEALTHY Jared GAither.. but u going kno alot of contracts r coming up in a few Jrat, A. Spencer, dont 4get about Free..

Like i said the interior line is where the thin ice is bc as the line as a whole the tackles pos.. is saturated.. we only hav 1 back up G guy just 1 and that holland vs
3 tackles.. then u talking about bringing in a 6th tackle on the roster?

by lostar2009 on Oct 6, 2010 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

And don't forget 2005:

Marion Barber
Chris Canty

4th round has been pretty good to us. What kind of upside is there with a 300 lb+ man and a bad back(he’s probably going to IR if his ‘second opinion’ goes with the team doctors) and a lazy attitude?

Ok, fine. But where is Gaither going to play?

Free is kicking ass on the left side and that is where Gaither wants to play. Do you just move Free back to the right side? Gaither absolutely doesn’t want to play right side anymore.

Underachieving Tackle

Don’t we have one of those already in Barron?

We live life forwards and understand it backwards

by tdships on Oct 2, 2010 9:14 AM CDT reply actions

And Barron's not always hurt...

or holding out from camp for a new contract or both.

Of course, Gaither can actually block 3/4 of the time without holding. But, still not worth the money/hassle IMHO. His story smacks of a disgruntled player that wants a big payday, a move back to LT (where the BIG money is) or a move to somewhere where he thinks he can get those things before he’ll play consistently again. And in a couple seasons, the cycle will start all over again when he wants more money or is unhappy about something else.

At this point, Dallas should wait it out

If BAL ends up cutting him, then bring him in for a thorough medical to see what’s up with the back problem. But at some point, Gaither wants a new contract based on playing LT, and that might not be reasonable with Free (who is also coming due for a new contract) playing so well at LT.

I just want them to get someone better than Barron in here to be the swing tackle. He’s worthless.

I'm fine with waiting for the moment.

But, if the Kosier and Colombo situations become a recurring issue throughout the year like I think they will and we have to rely on guys like Barron, Holland, and Brewster to shoulder the load then we’re going to have to address the problem or we aren’t going to make it.

high mileage though

the injuries are taking a rapid toll

by I_miss_Switzer on Oct 4, 2010 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep.

Kosier too. Those guys won’t hold up much longer. And the older Bigg and Gurode get the more they will start to break down.

Reminds me...

of Andrews situation with the Eagles before they finally let him go. He was having manic depression issues and didn’t seme to want to play football and also had “mysterious” back issues. I don’t want to waste a draft pick. If Ravens drop him, the I have no problem working him out without losing a pick.

Tackle with a terribly injured back?

Pick him up off of free agency, but don’t waste a draft pick on him.

Even a 7th rounder = Josh Brent

I wouldn’t trade a future Josh Brent for Gaither at this point.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Oct 6, 2010 4:52 PM CDT reply actions

With this latest news, I am changing my tune

But in general, most of you here overvalue your own players and dont know enough about our competition. Gaither played really well in ‘08 and in ’09 before he got injured. And again, he’s 24 years old. He was a baby in those seasons. He would be worth the risk of a mid-round pick. Sure, there is risk involved, but he has a higher potential to be a star than most 4th rounders. But again, with this latest news, we can put it to bed.

by TCBinNYC on Oct 6, 2010 5:54 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, if he's really that hurt then just wait until the offseason.

I agree.

Instead of A draft Pick

think we could trade Barron? That way we get rid of Barron and the Raven get a non-disgruntled player who is willing to be the Swing Tackle? Win -win!
