Cowboys Release Safety Michael Hamlin

Today, the Cowboys decided to part ways with safety Michael Hamlin. The 2009 5th-round pick had yet to see significant playing time last season because of a broken forearm.

Although healthy this year, the play of UDFA safeties Danny McCray and Barry Church has seemingly pushed Hamlin off the roster.

Dallas has not filled Hamlin's roster spot, but they could sign another TE or FB to the 53 if Martellus Bennett's ankle prevents him from playing this Sunday at Minnesota.

Maybe sign another safety

I doubt Wade is concerned with progress stopers at this point.

So I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ken Hamlin.

Others may disagree but I think Hamlin played better than Ball has.

At the very minumum..Ken Hamlin knows our scheme

Ken Hamlin was resigned by the Ravens weeks ago

as far as Mike Hamlin Ive been saying for awhile he stinks and would be short for this team. Just because he looks the part doesn’t mean he can play it…where u at Terry..Ha!

Sadly he would be an upgrade.

Ball is nothing more than a backup tweener S/CB and should never have been given the opportunity to start. Fail.

Was he getting any playing time at safety?

All I’ve seen him do is play STs. They need some ST players, maybe they think there’s a guy on the PS that can help.

It’s too late for any difference making trade anyway.

But we’re 1-3 now with the meat of the schedule coming up. It might be too late at this point.

All I know is that the play at FS right now is disgusting

The more replays I watch the more I see that Alan Ball has no idea of what’s going on. He’s taking baits more than Ken Hamlin ever did and his reaction to plays is BRUTALLY slow. This kind of crap drives me nuts.

by Cowboysaficionado on Oct 12, 2010 3:30 PM CDT reply actions

Thats why I wanted us to draft Earl Thomas

He’s playing very well for the Seahawks. I know a lot of the fans love Dez and he could end up being great someday, but we already have a legit #1 receiver who is young….the need for a play making safety is much greater.

Well then I want to see him play.

I like Akwasi, but drafting Burnett wouldn’t have meant we couldn’t draft Akwasi. We could have gone Dez, Burnett, OG, and then Akwasi.

I could see possibly taking someone instead of Dez (though we got a major steal there) because we already have WRs and especially Miles

but Lee was a real necessity. Brooking looks all but done, and James not too far behind. We could not go without a valid ILB. Or would you rather have kept Carpenter?

by mdlusk on Oct 13, 2010 5:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Well let me put it this way:

When the draft came around I ranked our needs OL, FS, WR, ILB. As such, I thought for sure our second round pick was going to be an O-lineman or FS after nabbing Dez. As such, I thought that Morgan Burnett was just sitting there waiting to be nabbed in the second round. I am biased as a Tech student but I honestly believed he was border first round material with his range and intelligence. It was for that reason that Sean Lee surprised me so much and put me off. Its not that I didn’t see ILB as a need, but I just didn’t see the sense in spending one of our higher draft picks on an ILB for the 4th time in the last six drafts (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010). It wasn’t so much that I disliked Lee as it was that I wanted Burnett.

I was about to say the same thing

I love what Dez brings for the future, but safety is a critical position today and we’re playing with a bum back there. I wish we could go back and trade all of last year’s draft for Earl.

by Cowboysaficionado on Oct 12, 2010 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Now that's just silly

It’s extremely expensive to move up that high in the draft. And for everything you trade you’re still 50% likely to end up with a bust.

Let’s not over-react like DMN commentors here.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Oct 12, 2010 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think anybody is overreacting.

There were areas that needed to be addressed, and most people acknowledged it at the time, and furthermore said that if a few specific areas didn’t get addressed (namely O-line, FS, and K) then this team could potentially have problems. Those areas didn’t get taken care of, and now the team is having problems. I don’t see how being mad about the team not doing what it needed to do to take care of business is overreacting, especially when a lot of people correctly predicted what the consequences could be.

The Sean Lee pick

There were other options available in the second round and beyond. I’m fine with Dez in the 1st round. Like I said below, I can’t fault them for that one. When a top 5 talent falls to you in the 20’s you have to put your needs aside and jump on it.

Nate Allen is playing very well for PHI and would have been more realistic as a draft choice, I was on his bandwagon.
But I’d still take Dez over them. When a talent like Dez is available you take him no matter what.

I guess this is a matter of opinion

but i don’t believe guys are “destined” for stardom. On this team, with this secondary coach teaching him, he would’ve been asked to play a big role in this offense – what happens when rush 7, go man with a safety over top and he makes a couple wrong decisions? does his confidence just go out?

by foyesboys on Oct 12, 2010 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I know, right?

You would think that an ILB coming from Linebacker U (aka Penn State), would be able to transition immediately into a professional defense, pickup all the nuances, understand the game speed changes and adapt to all those things inside of 6 months.

Right?

Wait. Didn’t Lee have some injury issues in training camp that limited his playing time? Didn’t Lee sit out the last two games due to a hamstring strain?

So, we have a rookie ILB that has fought some injuries and he isn’t making a big impact in the game. Huh. How long did it take Austin or Romo to show us they can be studs on the field?

Give the guy a break. I believe he’ll be showing off by the end of the season, which is where I’d rather have him playing like a stud.

I am excited about Dez. But back to back drafts we spend a #1 on a WR? I am probably wrong, but there is only one other organization that I know has done this: Matt Millens Lions.

You are right

that I am very wrong if what I said was I don’t know any other organizations that take WR in the first round. That would be idiotic, since I root for a team that took a HOF WR in the first round in 1988.

But, I was wondering if there were any organizations other than the Lions that have spent #1 picks in back-to-back drafts on WR like we did: (2009—RW and 2010—Dez Bryant). Perhaps too nuanced for you.

My thought was that it was probably a little extravagant to do so in light of all the major areas of need.

I said it when we let go of Ken Hamlin

And I’ll say it again, our defense didn’t look as good without K. Hamlin in there as it did with him. When he was active and healthy the defense just clicked. Sure, we didn’t make many plays, but we cut him and look what that has gotten us. I think we bring him back and settle for at least decent Safety play for this year and draft a stud for next year.

One thing the Cowboy’s can’t ignore is bad play from the FS. Every team will be chucking it deep until the defense proves they can stop it.

Don't let one bust tarnish an entire program

But if DAL goes for a safety high in the draft, I’d rather them go after the balhawking FS type like Earl Thomas.
I guess Rahim Moore, and Deunta Williams are more in that mold.

yes

Duenta Williams is the guy I want

by Archie Barberio on Oct 12, 2010 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually think it depends what the team thinks of Akwasi.

If they have a high opinion of him, I would be perfectly fine with going after a more physical safety. Sensabaugh is average anyways. Then again, I wouldn’t mind having two ballhawks back there. I still think this front seven is good enough to stop the run without a Roy Williams type safety. My problem is that all of a sudden against Tennessee we seemed to lose confidence in our front seven and sold out so hard against the run that we watched Britt burn us deep.

yup

I want Akwasi at FS and another ballhawk at SS
Ive never seen our SS have to make tackles all that much

I think you've got it backwards

He was a safety at TCU and is supposed to transition to an inside linebacker here.

by Dezstroyer88 on Oct 12, 2010 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he could someday be a very good nickel backer and ST player if he gets healthy.

Outside of that though I don’t think he has starting potential.

:( Just heard Davis is starting at OG this week,

and MB# is startind at RB. I’ve always said I don’t care who starts as long as Felix get 15- 20 touches.

Lock n Load

by DIRE WOLF on Oct 12, 2010 4:07 PM CDT reply actions

I do

I just don’t understand the decisions this team makes sometimes. When felix has gotten significant touches, this offense has done well…almost every time. He is a big play threat and imo nearly as good of an all around back as barber (taking out his explosiveness). I just don’t get it.

by foyesboys on Oct 12, 2010 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

You should have heard Wade shooting sunshine up our butts about Davis

He was in the press conference calling him a pro-bowl player and telling us how well he did when they put him back in (with no mention of Holland’s injury… they just put him back in!)

It’s so sick, I’m done with this guy. Get him out of here and insert Garrett. I can’t stand rooting for a team with this fool at the helm.

Hodge is the cure for all our Woes....

He will be a ST Ace.. Safety on First and Second downs…and a Nickel ILB….

by thejanusman on Oct 12, 2010 4:08 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry but Hodge= Justin Beriault

Good player that will never see the field.

I was trying to remember that name…he had a ton of potential…thanks for the memory refresh

by thejanusman on Oct 12, 2010 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I think safety is way too hopeful.

The other two could, and hopefully do happen. I would love it if Jason Williams and Stephen Hodge could stay healthy and have the lights go off in their heads to play on the nickel.

what about AOA?

Is he so raw that he has no chance to even perform at Ball’s level? Does he practice as safety at all?

by playactionman on Oct 12, 2010 4:15 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Wade has no love for rookies

I don’t see a newbie starting unless injuries mount.

by Cowboysaficionado on Oct 12, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Wade is too stubborn for his own good then

Other teams play rookies even if they were lower round prospects.

by playactionman on Oct 12, 2010 4:30 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

From a small school I think it's unfair to put him in there mid-season in his rookie year

He’s the kind of guy you draft to groom as a project player. If you put AOA in I think it’s under the impression that he “can’t do worse than Ball” rather than expecting him to be an upgrade.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Oct 12, 2010 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Small school versus big school… Does it matter at this level?

I mean can you imagine not assigning a project or task to someone at work because they graduated from a small school versus someone from A&M or some other large school. Talent and brains and skills are what count.

by playactionman on Oct 12, 2010 4:27 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Level of competition

Big schools get the best recruits. So the players play the best competition every week and execute gameplans against the best offensive and defensive coordinators. They have access to the best coaching staff and positional coaches as well.

It’s the same thing in the corporate world. If you have 10 years of experience as the CEO of Coca Cola Corp. you’re going to be a lot more sought after for a job than a guy with 10 years of experience running a small family business.

Akwasi

I loved him during April in the whole predraft process
I still think he is the answer long term

by Archie Barberio on Oct 12, 2010 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

Either way

I’d hate to see the Cowboys ignoring Safety early in next year’s draft. Unless we see Akwasi being pretty good by the end of the year.

by Cowboysaficionado on Oct 12, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

they wont

S and OL is the two areas they know they have to draft
still I think Akwasi is going to be good
the reason is because of his raw skill
Mike Hamlin never had Akwasi’s size speed range and ballhawk abilities

by Archie Barberio on Oct 12, 2010 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

But it needs to be early

1st or 2nd round. Don’t come with Michael Hamlins Deangelo Smiths Mickens crap at the end of the draft.

by Cowboysaficionado on Oct 12, 2010 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Why waste a pick?

I don’t even know why Jerry wasted a pick on this guy he was the human turnstile at ND imagine what he’ll do against real football players with a better skill level.

You would think so right??
They wont. S and OL is the two areas they know they have to draft

Yet, we said the same thing this offseason and here we are.

why is it that

everyone here is so obsessed with re-doing past drafts all the time? Pretty much every team could second guess every draft to some degree couldnt they?

This.

That is what some people still can’t get through their heads. It’s not like we’re using 20/20 hindsight here. People had already spotted the problem areas for the most part and knew what needed to be addressed.

That was an awful draft for a young team like we were.

its starting to seem like it

Has victor butler seen the field this year? He should be getting PT. if not, Wade needs to find a way to make that happen.

Buehler looks like hes about to be cut or demoted. McGee and Brewster are the only remaining guys who have a shot at making some sort of an impact or staying power in the future.

The big problem with the 09 draft was the Roy Williams trade, not the picks. When you lose two of your top 3 picks, your draft will almost certainly yield little value

by foyesboys on Oct 13, 2010 1:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Who is Victor Butler going to put ont he bench?

Ware or Spencer?

Play him in spot duty to give those two a breather, but not significant snaps.

by mdlusk on Oct 13, 2010 5:37 AM CDT up reply actions

because

everyone can do a better job drafting than Jerry, apparently.
