The NFC East WR's

The NFC East has the best WR's in the game. Let me say this the Washington Redskins has NO wide receivers I'm about to mention. So if you're from Hogs Haven and were expecting to see Santana Moss or Joey Galloway on this list you're in for a disappointment. The other teams actually have some talent for their QB's. The Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles have some of the best 1-2 WR combos in the NFL.

I have to to say Miles Austin and Dez Bryant is the best. Not being a homer at all, but Miles runs excellent routes and has amazing speed. Hes been a monster since week 6 in Kansas City. He set a Cowboys receiving game record that week and got the Cowboys the game winning touchdown. When T.O. went down we though Roy Williams would replace his number. Boy were we wrong. Miles had just played two weeks in the NFL and had 4 TD's and was the ninth most productive receiver in the NFL going into Week 8. Austin was third in receiving yards with 1320 and made his first pro-bowl appearance. Austin did not slow down this season. He has 725 yards and only 3 TD's. While he had 13 in 2009 he also had Tony Romo throwing him the ball for most of the year. He now has Kitna and the Cowboys have a ton of other offensive weapons. His past 2 seasons hes averaged about 16 yards per reception and gets 81 yards per game.

Dez Bryant is a reason Austin has had a reduction in TD's. Dez was a steal in this years draft. Right now he is looking like a top two Rookie of the year candidate. He has 7 overall TD's 5 catching and 2 punt returns. He has over 500 yards and averages 13.1 yards a catch. He has around 50 YPG. I expect Dez to become a superstar. Within the next year or so Bryant will be a top 10 WR in the NFL and will command double teams. With another top 10 WR on the other end that might be trouble for DB's in the NFL. Especially with Tony Romo slinging the ball in there. Dez is a hard worker. Many praise his worth ethic and that will get him far in this league if he keeps it up. He uses the talent he has to a full extent.

The Giants also have a nice tandem. Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks are two of the better WR's in the game today. Steve Smith has owned the hook and hitch route. A reason he averages around 10 YPC. In 2009 Steve Smith finally out grew the name "Other" Steve Smith when he caught 107 passes. Smith is a Cowboy killer and we all know this. Expect him to make the clutch 3 and 10 catch to keep the chains moving. Which is what makes him so dangerous.

Nicks had an average rookie season, but in 2010 hes emerged as one of the NFL's best. Hes already beat his rookie numbers in catches, touchdowns, and YPG. He will soon surpass his yards from a season ago. Smith now calls for double coverage and this opens Nicks up. Nicks has taken advantage of this and now leads the NFL in TD's at 9. He is a big guy. He is very physical at the point when he catches the ball and will break tackles. Nicks has big hands and if you leave him in 1 on 1 coverage in the red zone expect 6 to be on the board.

I'd like to thank DeSean Jackson for teaching me how to jerk (the dance he did vs. the Giants on SNF last year). Cowboys fans have seen Jackson make a of bonehead mistake like the fumble before the goal line on MNF and such. Jackson used to be just a speed guy, but this years hes been running better routes and this will make him an elite WR. You can always expect him to make a big play because he can out run your CB's and safeties. He averages around 17.5 YPG  since his rookie year. He has 16 TD catches and aver 2,600 yards.

Top 5 Wide Outs in the NFC East?

1. Miles Austin

2. DeSean Jackson

3. Hakeem Nicks

4. Dez Bryant

5. Steve Smith

Honorable Mentions : Jeremy Maclin

In the next few seasons I think the top 4 of these will be top 10 WR's in the NFL. I think Dez has the most talent up there and many agree that he'll be a superstar very soon. Austin, Nicks, and Jackson will also be stars, but to a lesser degree. I like the Cowboys passing game for years to come. Be afraid NFL these NFC East WR's could becoming to a city near you.

Equally boneheaded by the Cowboys, who didn’t pick up the ball, allowing the Eagles to score on the next play.

Good write up

Although as a Cowboys fan, it pains me to say this, but I’d swap Jackson and Austin. As much as I love Miles Austin, DeSean Jackson is just too ridiculous a threat in that Eagles offense. He’s Devin Hester with hands, and more athleticism. Jackson gives me a heart attack every time I watch an Eagles-Cowboys game, the only other receivers who used to do this to me were Jerry Rice, TO, Steve Smith of the Panther, and Randy Moss (in no particular order).

Jackson had plenty of opportunities to make plays against us

All he needs is QB who can get him the ball and not throw at his knees like Doughboy did last season. The reason we “shut down” Jackson is because we got to McNabb.

I’ll agree that Jackson didn’t exactly light up the Cowboys specifically, but judging a player against how he did against your team rather than evaluating the entire body of work is a little obtuse. For example, during the regular season last year DeMarcus Ware had 5 tackles and no sacks against the Eagles, but I’m smart enough to know he’s an elite defender. Eventually, in the playoffs Ware got his, just as I expect Jackson to eventually get his against Dallas.

by JimmyK on Nov 16, 2010 5:54 PM CST up reply actions

DeSean is fast, but he’s not strong.

The reason he lit it up yesterday was because the ’Skins were giving him free releases off the line, a big mistake.

Wrong. On the 88 yard TD DeAngelo Hall tried to jam Jackson, but there’s more than one way to beat a jam. There’s the Michael Irvin way, which is to simply punish the corner that’s trying to jam you – effective. Or if you have the ungodly quickness of DeSean Jackson, you can simply juke your way past the jam – equally effective. If you’re a corner and you whiff, it’s all over.

So while I agree that DeSean Jackson won’t be winning any arm wrestling contests anytime soon, I’ll pose the question… Who cares?

I just went back and watched the play, you’re right he did try to jam DeSean but it was a lazy jam.

He was too busy looking inside at Mike Vick expecting a run or bootleg because of the formation.

Don’t get me wrong, I like DeSean but I think his size is going to catch up to him eventually, he reminds me of a less physically imposing Randy Moss. And you’re going to get Jackson killed if you try to have him go across the middle. Dude is tiny.

by G_SWAG on Nov 16, 2010 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

I’m not sure how many guys would only miss one game after the hit he took. Tough kid. I don’t buy the whole “fragile thing.”

by JimmyK on Nov 16, 2010 6:51 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn’t send him over the middle too often, mentally he can be tough as nails but he’s just not very big.

I’m not saying he’s a bad wide receiver, but that he’s not a complete wide receiver and there’s a blue print out there to shut him down.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be really hard to employ that blue print while Mike Vick is scrambling around in the backfield.

by JimmyK on Nov 16, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

Jenks can jam a wide receiver man, business decisions aside. It’s one thing to be scared to tackle Adrian Peterson, Brandon Jacobson and Arian Foster.

It’s another to be scared of 5 foot 10 inch 175 pound Jackson.

4. Miles Austin
5. DeSean Jackson

I like Austin’s route running better than Jackson’s. As a I said though from what I’ve seen D-Jax is improving that.

He’s Randy Moss without the height and leaping advantage. And he can’t do what steve smtih of the panthers does which is excellent route running.

Hes good, for now, but Cowboys found a way to stop him.

And for the guy who said its because Mcnabbs gone and he finally has Vick to throw deep to him well then that proves even more he’s a one trick pony. Its ok right now the Eagles got a good thing going.

people hate on DJax b/c the only time they see him

are the highlight reels where he’s going deep.

It’s true that he doesn’t do much across the middle (but we have Avant and Celek for that), but he runs great routes along the sideline, and most of his balls are just quick releases that go for a simple first down and out of bounds.

im glad somebody touched on this

really the NFC’s Pro Bowl WR’s besides Roddy White and Megatron are in the NFC East
actually besides Andre 3000 all the best WR’s reside in the NFC now
Harvin is no joke either
its funny because I wanted Harvin I wanted Hakeem Nicks and was so pissed we traded for Roy Williams who if we waited until the end of that season could of gotten dirt cheap Detroit was done with him and moving on lets say 2nd rd pick to be genorous
anyway we didnt get Nicks or Harvin and I kept hearing Dez Bryant Dez Bryant is going to fall to the Cowboys I said no f’n way he is a freak he wont fall past 20 at the LATEST its insane to think that then draft night which I will never forget I watched every pick fly by and im like man somebody has to take Dez Bryant right? my friend is a Giants fan and I could tell he was getting nervous, because lets face it Dez is a beast and right now a Giant killer
so the Broncos are up and im like ok there goes Dez, and they take Demarius Thomas who I still dont know why they did this, its like if Jesus or Mother Theresa were on the board they were going with them instead of this Judas evil evil black magic Dez Bryant
so im like wow maybe I should of follwed more Dez Bryant coverage this April, not that I needed to I loved him since his freshman year
then New England does the most humane thing ever, f’n over a rival the Ravens
because the Ravens would of taken Dez to pair with Boldin omg that would be sick
thats why they traded out of the 1st rd right aftter that trade went down
its funny because the Pats have a video of Bellicheck calling Ozzie Newsome just to let him know we were trading for him lmfao
then I the commish comes up and the rest of history
easily the best draft moment ever for me and a night I will never forget
Dez is my favorite player all time

sorry for the long post

Dez gets me pumped up
so I ask my friend what do you think? “well its a OK pick” im like bro seriously be honest and hes like “yeah wtf do you want me to say I wanted him myself he is a f’n beast and I gotta play him the rest of his career 2 times a year just what Romo needed another weapon”
so I was like damn man chill
lmfao then he trys to attempt to defend the JPP pick but deep down you could tell his 2010 draft high was over when Dez was picked
2nd rd wasnt pleased with a DT either, still didnt get that move by Reese who is a great GM

Yep

Steve Smith is one of the most overrated WR in the league. He had a good year last year but in the future everyone will be pointing to it like they do Roy’s 2006 season as the exception.

Manningham is better, and Nicks is completely out this world.

As far as 3rd WR’s go ini the league, I think Roy Williams is one of the best and certainly better than Steve Smith.

by Damnsammit on Nov 19, 2010 7:15 AM CST up reply actions

In 8 games

Steve Smith had 47 catches, Mario Manningham had 25 before shredding Dallas in his 9th game for 10 catches. I know your fondness for Roy so let’s ignore that, but seriously, how can you even say Mario is better than Steve? That’s crazy.

by JLMax09 on Nov 19, 2010 7:47 AM CST up reply actions

Because they both are mediocre at best...

It’s like saying Deion Branch is better than Houshmandzadeh. You could argue all day but neither of them are elite.

Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, and Roy Williams all have something in common. They are not elite receivers and they are good 2nd/3rd options.

by Damnsammit on Nov 19, 2010 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

I think you are comparing two differently type of receivers.

Smith isn’t a #1 WR.

But I do think he is an elite #2 WR/Slot WR

He runs crisp routes has good speed and great hands.

of course I am comparing two different types of receivers...

That’s what this post is all about.

That’s why the initial post is comparing possession receivers to slot receivers to pure speed demons like DJax.

And elite #2 just sounds oxymoronic…

by Damnsammit on Nov 19, 2010 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

Aha, I was about to say. How do you define an elite #2 – I guess we’ll have that question in Dallas soon :]

by G_SWAG on Nov 19, 2010 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

My definition is that he takes advantage of one on one coverage

on a consistent basis, which Smith does.

He was even more of a #1 WR last year while Nicks and the rest were getting used to the climate of the NFL.

I don’t love the guy, I just think that he’s a player I’d rather not play 2 times a year.

There was a post before the season similar to this

where I was posting with a GIants fan who said Nicks/Smith reminds him of Smith/McCardell, which is pretty accurate. I don’t know who you would call the #1 there, but the other definitely was one of the best #2WRs in the league.

Steve Smith is a joke. Anybody can torch the Dallas secondary and thats who he got 1/4 of his stats from last year.

I’ll take Roy over a little 5’11" dude for my 3rd WR position any day.

by Damnsammit on Nov 19, 2010 7:21 AM CST up reply actions

Desean Jackson didn't torch them last year...

Steve Smith Carolina didn’t torch them

Maques Colston didn’t torch them.

Smith isn’t a #1 WR, but he does what is asked of him, picks up 1st downs and is a reliable pass catcher. To say he is a joke is pretty ridiculous.

He just got lucky ;)

I’m never going to give NYG Steve Smith any credit.

It’s my opinion that he will fade away in the next 2-3 years like every other mediocre receiver who puts together a good year followed by a bunch of average ones. At least Roy has the height to be effective in the Red Zone.

by Damnsammit on Nov 19, 2010 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

I guess..

what makes him mediocre in your eyes is what I don’t get?

Is he a true #1, nope. But he has good acceleration, great hands, and runs crisp routes.

Its not like this was a 6th round pick we’re talking about, he was high second rounder that went to USC so maybe he isn’t just mediocre.

He's mediocre because he plays for the Giants

Duh!

Nicks/Manningham is a better combo IMO.

Not saying he is a horrible receiver, and maybe mediocre is a bad word, but he is hardly an ELITE #2 (whatever that means) or an elite slot receiver. He is a great 3rd WR option, or maybe #2 if you don’t have better options.

Plenty of room for homerism here

I do think Dez and Miles are the best duo here…

But I’m not going to act as if I’m unhappy with DeSean and Maclin.

I actually have been having this conversation over at Big Blue View, and they’ll argue for Hakeem Nicks over everyone…so it just seems like everyone’s pretty fat and happy in the WR department.

Well...

I think Nicks is the best WR right now.

Dez could come up and take that from him in the future, but right now that guy is a beast… when he isn’t stuttering in the end zone getting picked off by a UDFA Rookie.

But, really, I don’t think many teams can compare to Miles, Roy, Dez, and Witten.

by Damnsammit on Nov 17, 2010 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

I think Nicks is the best WR right now.

That’s my issue, really. Yes, right now he has the best stats. But he’s not the fastest guy, and he has more than his share of drops.

When I think of the best WR, I’m not looking at stats alone, I’m thinking of the guy I would most want on my own personal all-star team…right now I’d team up Dez Bryant and DeSean Jackson…one to stretch the field and the other to catch every ball that comes to him and just stiff arm defenders to the ground as he runs for 30 yards after the catch

he's not the fastest..but he's fast

he drops balls, but he’s got as good of hands as any.

But one thing he is, is he IS the best route runner among everyone in the division. Better then that SS12 fella that plays in NJ too.

I think this list is more like:

1. Miles – Runs with great power after the catch. Questionable hands
2. Nicks – The Giants version of Dez Bryant
3. Dez – Great hands, vision, leaping ability, power, and deceptive speed after the catch
4. DeSean – Great deep ball receiver, electrifying speed. Could improve his route running and lacks the size to go through the middle of the field.
5. Smith (NYG): The new Cowboy killer. Runs great routes, and is the best slot receiver in the NFC.

Just my opinion.

by starmesh23 on Nov 17, 2010 7:00 PM CST reply actions

Nicks is slower than every reciever on this list (except thier own Steve Smith)

and he drops his share of balls.

He’s unquestionably a stud, but I don’t think he would start over Miles or Dez if he came to the Cowboys. He could probably start over Maclin if he came to the Eagles, but that’s more indicative of the fact that we don’t have a big hands type possession receiver…it’s not that we’re unhappy with Maclin.

and the only reason I can think of is that people don’t know him.

The guy doesn’t drop ANYTHING. Not kidding…he leads receivers in our entire division in catch% related to targets at 73.8% (31 catches to 42 targets). In fact, there are only 4 receivers above him on this list. (Collie, Davone Bess, Mike Thomas, and Jordan Shipley)

Dez Bryant is next in the division at 69.5% (with 41 receptions at 59 targets)

Manningham is third at 67.3%

Honestly the Giants probably will try to trade him before that happens to try and get some value out of him.

Depending on the progress of Barden, I think that the Giants should really consider trading him next year, they probably could get a return of a late 2nd rounder or a 3rd and later pick.

last season, you would say the same about Smith…

there’s a lot more behind a guy than stats…QB, OLine, run game…all those things go together to form the actual production on the field.

Nicks also has a lot more targets than other guys…which screams to me that maybe he’s on a team without too many other weapons…sure, Smith is fine, and Bradshaw’s awesome, but no one else on that whole offense is scaring anybody.

not a lot of 3rd WRs scare anyone

but Manningham is as close as you’ll get to that.

Boss doesn’t have a ton of catches, but he makes big plays.

Nicks’ targets are actually more of a product of teams shading towards Steve Smith…just like Manningham’s 10 catches on Sunday afternoon were a result of teams shading towards Nicks.

that is true most of the time

but this team has no lack of weapons. on the other side of Nicks is a 100 catch, 1200 yard guy one season removed. behind both of them is a 750+ yards, 6+ TD guy one season removed. on the end of our line is a 6’7" guy with reliable hands who can put up 500 yards of receiving any year. and behind Bradshaw is the most absurdly sized running back in the league, who avg. 4.5 yards per, and has 45 TDs in his career.

As a whole, I’d take Vick – Jackson – Maclin (+ a shoddy line) over Romo – Miles – Dez (+ a really shoddy line) right now. Hell, I’d take Eli + Nicks + Smith + a pretty good line over us right now too. If Romo had as much time to throw and as clean of a pocket as Eli we’d be at the top for sure, Miles and Dez are two legitimate super star #1s in this league that can run every route, make every catch, and get crazy Y.A.C. as well. The only thing about the Eagles is that Vick makes Jackson and Maclin extra dangerous because defenses have to really, really respect his ability to come out of the back field and dedicate extra personnel and resources that they normally wouldn’t have to. That buys enough time for Jackson to pull the double moves and go routes that he runs so well.

I’m not too worried about Mr. Vick for 2011 though, as broke as he is he’s going to have to take the biggest paycheck he can find rather than play for pride and stick with the Eagles after this season. There’s a reason he hasn’t signed a contract extension yet. On top of that Kolb + Jackson + Maclin (+ a shoddy line) aren’t going to be anywhere near as potent.

by G_SWAG on Nov 19, 2010 6:20 AM CST reply actions

In summary, you have to remember that the wide receiver position hinges on a lot of factors outside of the players’ control. This year if you had Larry Fitzgerald as your go to wide out in fantasy football you’d probably be pretty disappointed, he’s 17th in the league with 603 receiving yards and tied for 25th (with a lot of people) at 4 touchdowns, but we all know he’s arguably one of the top three receivers in the game.

Or is he?

Maybe having Boldin on the other side and Warner throwing darts made him look better than he is?

I don’t know, there’s too many factors when it comes to wide receivers and in this era we’re seeing receivers that could honestly be interchangable.

Also of note, statistically speaking the NFC East receivers line up like this :

1. Hakeem Nicks (735 yards – 6th in the NFL)
2. Miles Austin (725 yards – 7th in the NFL)
3. Santana Moss (632 yards – 13th in the NFL)
4. DeSean Jackson (602 yards – 16th in the NFL)
5. Jeremy Maclin (585 yards – 21st in the NFL)

Honorable Mention:
Dez – (539 yards – 28th in the NFL)

You can easily make an argument to add in Roy William’s 366 yards to Dez though, seeing as how he took away targets my boy Dez deserved! Haha.
