Question for the Texas-based fans...

Have a Facebook friend who's a Jets fan and he's understandably giddy about the season his team is having, but for some reason he felt compelled to give me sh*t about my favorite team.

Specifically, he tore me a new one about rooting for a team that wasn't based in the area I grew up in. I was born and raised in the suburbs of NYC, and I've been a Cowboys supporter since I can remember - I'm estimating maybe 81, 82 is when I started rooting, and only because I have photos of myself as a young lad wearing various replica jerseys that I'd received for Christmas. Incidentally, my daughter now wears those jerseys around the house - Randy White and Tony Dorsett, respectively. :)

Anyway, long story short, this 'friend' of mine was trying to convince me that 'true' fans of the team (the ones who live in the Dallas area) actually *resent* people from outside the state rooting for their team. I probably should have been a Jets or Giants fan growing up, but I had no real influence in those matters (parents weren't into sports too much) so it was pretty much my call.

So I pose the question to the community - am I to be shunned by the Dallas-area Cowboys fans just because I'm rooting from outside the confines? Probably a silly question, but it's been on my mind for a week now and I'm venting.
