Wade Phillips gets the Pink Slip - Part Two

The lack of leadership in the Dallas Cowboys organization was glaringly obvious.  They began the 2010 season incurring penalties at an alarming rate.  Wade Phillips even hired referees to watch team practices toward the end of his stay to keep the team in check twice a week.

After Romo's injury, both the offense and the defense seemingly quit playing leading to blowouts by Jacksonville and Green Bay.  The offensive line turned into a sieve that could neither protect Jon Kitna nor jump start a league worst running game.

Last week it became apparent that almost everyone with the exception of Dez Bryant and Jerry Jones had given up.    Phillip's blitz packages became predictable and easy to spot.  The defensive line lacked penetration and the fans were screaming bloody murder.  Cris Collinsworth summed it up on the publicly televised execution Sunday night by mentioning "The Cowboys went back to basics last week and they're basically awful."

So ended the Wade Phillips coaching regime, but did Jerry Jones make the right decision bringing in Jason Garrett?  Was Wade entirely to blame for the Cowboy's woes?  Was Wade even the right person to be let go or was he a victim of the execution of his players?

The Sum of All Jeers

It's not certain whether or not Jason Garrett will do anything to replace Wade Phillips and turn the Cowboy's 2010 season around.  Problems with the offensive line and offensive play calling lead people to question Garrett's leadership abilities as well.  Not only that but doesn't Garrett share some of the blame for the Cowboy's 1-7 start?

With the offensive line in shambles, the backup quarterback running for his life and making ill-advised throws, and the play calling in question does Jason Garrett deserve his promotion?

Perhaps not, but Jerry Jones already knows this.

In the press conference where Jerry Jones announced the termination of Phillips and the promotion of Garrett, he made a specific point.  Jason Garrett would NOT be the actual head coach of the Dallas Cowboys but would instead serve as Interim Head Coach until the beginning of the 2011 season.  At that point he would be eligible to apply for the position along with anyone else who wanted it.    The confidence Jerry once had in Garrett was already somewhat shot.

Failing Upwards?

Jason Garrett may have lucked his way into the job of leader of the Dallas Cowboys but there was hardly any other choice.  With fan and media outcry coupled with his own anger and disappointment, Jerry Jones had no choice but to cut Phillips from the lead role.

With little time to interview potential candidates for the head coaching job (and of course comply with the Rooney Rule), Jones made a spur of the moment decision to allow Garrett to take the reigns.  He also did something further.  Jones made it known that everyone in the Cowboys organization, including players were on notice for their performance.

With that statement, Jerry Jones receives an A for the way he handled the situation.  Not only did he recognize that Wade wasn't solely to blame for the mishap of the 2010 season in that statement, but he vaguely reminded the rest of the organization that they were somewhat responsible for Phillips getting fired.  By making Garrett an INTERIM coach instead of handing him the job, Jones made the statement that Garrett would get his chance but wasn't the clear-cut favorite anymore.  Jones backhandedly said that Garrett would have to turn the team around without quantifying how.

That leaves Jones an out to hire whoever he wants for the 2011 season, even and including a fan favorite like Jon Gruden.  Finally, Jones is free to clean house at the end of the season based on merit and performance.  Everyone's already been put on notice, so there won't be any surprises if it happens.

All that's left is to wait and see if Jones can follow through on the promise he's made to the fans.

The most surprising thing to me was that the media and the fans knew that Wade was gone before the players did.

Galloway and Company on 103.3 ESPN Radio did an interview with Keith Brooking and they asked him if there had been an official statement released to the players and he said no one had been told anything yet. This was nearly 3 hours after it was reported that Wade had been shit canned. I’m sure they knew, but they should have gotten a call/email/text from a coach instead of having to hear about it from the media.

My other gripe is that he should have just come out and said, “Damn it, I’m gonna miss that Wade” and let a few tears roll down his cheek instead of all the stuttering and stammering.

Other than that I think he did a solid job.

That sounds about right for Jerry

Don’t forget Tom Landry didn’t know he was canned until the media came to interview him.

Has to be an A

Obviously belated but welcome. You have to realize why Garrett is interim only: Jerry has to abide by the Rooney Rule. He cannot go hire the coach of his choosing until he interviews a minority candidate. Cowher, Gruden, Fox (Yuch) will all have to wait.

As aside, I think I would prefer a hard nosed coach who could teach these Just Guys to win. Not sure who that is at this point, Harbaugh? But Jerry has to make a splash, so a great young talent will not be in the offing.

Another thought, wasn’t Jason Garrett once considered one the NFL’s Young Guns. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

I gave it a B because it took a week too long.

I do believe JG is only an interim due to the Rooney Rule and will be one of the finalists for the permanent position.

At some point Dallas is going to have to hire someone who can actually get the team to overcome some adversity, because Bad Things Happen to every team. Other teams can do it, why do we have to have perfect health, top seeding, favorable schedule, etc. to be successful? If JG can show that we are able to do that in this season, he deserves the full-time position.

Never should have hired him. Took too long to fire him.

Had to be done so he gets no points for being shrewd. I gave him a B for calling out the players and giving redball no guarantees.

i didn't grade

considering that nobody on the team got to sleep till 4 in the morning ..I think the private jet ride pretty much told the story of what was to come…what concerns me most is will jerry let JG be the coach and have authority to hire and fire personnel (including coaches)? because he has enough on his plate as the HC much less trying to be OC..i hope they hire an OC and DL coach to get the staff where it should be…and it would be nice if we had a GM rootin around in other teams practice squads looking for help at DL as well due to injuries

Promote Ray Sherman to OC

And hire Michael Irvin for WR Coach.

C+

Are we grading Jerry Jones the owner or JJ the GM?

As an owner I give him a B+ last weeks apology was I am sure one of the toughest things he ever had to do as owner, but the day he fires himself as GM I will give him an A+

As a GM he is a D at best.

And to go off an a slight tangent here but it is time for a plan that last longer then next week, this season is over, next season is in doubt and even if it wasn’t does anyone really think we can fiix all the problems by the snd sunday of September 2011.

I for one don’t.

It is time for a longer term plan. Players need to be developed particularly on the O-line and in the defensive backfield. Time to stop giving big free agent contracts and then dumping these guys a year or two later

So here is my question if Jerry came out and said he was biulding a team for 2012 and 2013 would anyone have a problem with that?

by Englishneil on Nov 9, 2010 7:48 PM CST reply actions

I would have a problem with rebuilding for 2013

The talent is already in place. All that needs to be done is to shore up the offensive line and spell some of the aging vets. That can be done through free agency (cheaply) and the draft in one year. Defensively, we only need a coordinator who can focus solely on defense and not be bogged down running the show.

I’m concerned that Jones will expect Garrett to run the offense as well as the team. That’s WAY too much to handle for a new coach, interim or not.

I do agree, a team should ALWAYS be planning at least 3 years ahead for all contingencies. I also agree that Jerry needs to step out of the GM role and hire one. He can still make recommendations and hold the GM accountable, but he needs to learn from Dan Snyder this year. Keep your fingers out of the soup and let the chefs cook it.

Didn't see this post until today for some reason but

gave him a B. It was the right move, but came a little late. I know he didn’t want to fire him in midseason precisely because his options would be limited to people that were part of the problem, potentially. Still, a week or so earlier would have been more decisive.
