Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hey Cowboys fans, Joe from Revenge Of The Birds here to do the question asking thread that all of these blogs like to do.

If there is anything you guys want to know about the Cardinals before this legendary Christmas matchup on Saturday, ask away and I (along with some other people from RotB) will answer it.

As for some basic stuff to know:

We can't stand Derek Anderson, and yes I think getting rid of Matt Leinart was a mistake.

Larry Fitzgerald is still a beast. He just needs a Quarterback that can actually get the ball close to him when they throw it.

The Cardinals have the same problem with throwing on almost every down that you guys had before Romo went down. Why draft someone like Beanie Wells in the first round (Tim Hightower isn't that bad either) if you aren't going to use him for anything?

With a good Quarterback, I think this team could be 8-6 or 9-5 right now. Horrible QB has just killed us this year. It makes me miss Kurt Warner more and more every day.

Hi Joe:

What’s the present consensus on John Skelton. Didn’t follow him much . Is there any potential ?

by oldboysfan on Dec 20, 2010 5:54 PM CST reply actions

He has some potential

Fitz had 9 catches for 125 yards yesterday, including a 41 yarder. His stats would also look better if some perfectly thrown balls weren’t dropped.

I still think they need to draft a QB, but Skelton is a guy who I think can develop into at least a decent QB.

Meh.

And the Cowboys didn’t throw all the time because of want but because of need. The Oline suckkks.

What about boldin? Mistake?

by thebigham on Dec 20, 2010 5:58 PM CST reply actions

The O-Line here sucks too.

I wish Boldin could have stayed, but I honestly think he would have been gone after this season no matter how much he was making. He was mad at the organization for a while, he wanted out, and he got to go to a good team.

what do u think about Tony Romo as a Qb & the way Kitna has taken over?

Also i saw a few star players of the cardinals jump ship … Is there a issue with the Gm and players? or is it something else?

by lostar2009 on Dec 20, 2010 7:29 PM CST reply actions

Kitna has been impressive since Garrett took over

Romo is pretty good, but he needs to win more games in the Playoffs before he can be great.

As for the players jumping ship...

The owners being cheap is part of it.

Dansby and Rolle were offered almost the same thing they got from their new teams, but they also released Rolle because of his contract and hoped to resign him, and Dansby just seems like a guy who plays for a bigger contract. Good players, but right now they are vastly overpaid. Paris Lenon has done a good job taking Dansby’s place (Daryl Washington, our second round draft pick is looking good too), and Kerry Rhodes has been an upgrade over Rolle.

What do you think of a possible change to a 4-3?

You have very good ends that I think could function in a 4-3, Dan Williams on the bench (PFF has been saying he shouldn’t be), and horrible pass-rushing OLB’s. What do you reckon?

by Ben24626 on Dec 20, 2010 8:50 PM CST reply actions

They were actually playing some 4-3 in the Panthers game and it worked out pretty well.

The problem is that the OLBs don’t fit in with the 4-3 very well.

I think that a D-Line made up of Alan Branch, Darnell Dockett, Dan Williams, and Calais Campbell would work out pretty well, but the Linebackers are a question mark.

Dan Williams is also getting plenty of time on the field even though he isn’t the starter, and he does look like he is the answer for this team at Nose Tackle.

I was hoping Dallas would take Williams and move Ratliff to DE

5-11 versus 6-10

I wonder how much difference that will make in the order for round 1?

Anyway, what’s up with DRC?

Do you think AZ would draft Locker or Mallett?

And Locker is probably behind both Newton (if he comes out) and Mallett. Why your preference for Locker? is it because you watch more pac 10 than sec perhaps?

by Fan in Thick and Thin on Dec 21, 2010 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

I don't always notice these things

But it seems like when Williams is on the field, he does a better job opening up some holes in the offensive line so the blitzers have more room to get to the Quarterback or the Running Back than Bryan Robinson, the starter who is currently 36.

I have no idea why Dan Williams isn’t the starter.

I think he has done a poor job coaching the O-Line

As I mentioned before, they have not played well this year. Can’t run block, can’t pass block. Warner hid a lot of problems.

As a head coach though, I think he would be better at that. Seems like a good leader.

Is there an active campaign

To be overly hostile to cowboys fans on Christmas day? Last meet up in Glendale seemed much more hostile than usual (I live in Phoenix) and then I learned that it was because the local radio stations were drumming up tensions between the two factions. Hard to believe really, considering that if your residence in Arizona predates the Cardinals, you’re probably a Cowboys fan.

Not that I have heard

I can understand why since a lot of Cardinals fans hate the Cowboys, and some of us remember the days at Sun Devil Stadium where for some games there would be more Cowboys fans than Cardinals fans.

There was also a guy wearing a Miles Austin jersey a couple feet away from me when I went to the Denver game a week ago.

I don’t like some of the fans that just jump onto the bandwagon for the big name teams either, especially when that team doesn’t even play close to where the guy lives. You can probably guess that I was really satisfied when the Heat lost a bunch of games in a row.

I guess...

But I don’t feel like I ever had a choice in the matter. I am a cowboys fan through and through and don’t feel like I have the choice to root for someone else just because my team sucks precisely because its an emotional thing you can’t just turn towards another team. I guess what I’m saying is that being true to one’s team isn’t something that should be applauded because if its a choice then I wonder if you are truly a fan.

I was raised a cowboys fan in the middle of PA—so this douche would probably label me a bandwagon fan because I root for a big name team and live nowhere near them. But for us poor kids, football was a television event—i grew up 120 miles from Pittsburgh but the possibility of seeing a live game there was the same as seeing a live game in Texas Stadium.

Don't think Joe'd include you in "bandwaggoner"

just because of the location/big-name thing. Could be wrong, but I didn’t read his comments to be intended that way. More like when it’s that together with switching teams because of winning titles and such. You know, fair-weather “fans”.

So, no offense, if I’m right, the “douche” comment’s unwarranted.

Could be

It’s a maybe, maybe not from where I sit. I neither live in the area nor know you, Joe or your histories. Tonal inflections are lost online and there’re good/bad fans everywhere.

All my comment was saying was that I didn’t read anything in them that made him a “douche”. Benefit of doubt based on the loyalty factor, that despite location you’ve maintained yours to the Cowboys through ups and downs, not shifted allegiances. Combined with “bandwaggoning” having nothing to do with location and, in fact, being a location-independent phenomena. If Card fans in Phoenix area, or any fans anywhere, equate the two they’re simply being illogical.

Like I said, I could be mistaken, what with not being in your shoes and having your perspective/sensititivies with respect to the subject.

Unless and until Joe clearly states his intent in his remark, specifically with respect to you and your situation, we’ll remain in mutual polite disagreement.

It is the switiching to teams that are winning or just watching all of the big name teams

If someone is brought up as a Cowboys fan in Pennsylvania by their family, fine. Now, lets say that you grew up somewhere pretty far away from Texas like where you are now, and your family is a fan of the local team, but it is during the time when the Cowboys were dominant in the 90s and you just decide to become a Cowboys fan because they are winning a lot, that would get the label.

And as mentioned above, some people in Arizona who have lived there all their life along with their parents who are fans of the Cowboys, Yankees, Heat, etc. That would also get it.

So...

Speaking to your second paragraph, so someone who lives in Arizona and was a Colts fan before the Cards moved to Phoenix gets labelled a “bandwaggoner” ? Or to use your team namings, they were a Cowboys fan, then the Cards come to Phoenix and they stay a Cowboys fan, just because they’re not rooting for the local team they’re a “bandwaggoner”? What about a ’Skins fan in Dallas (since Texas was once ’Skins territory), then the Cowboys come into being and the guy stays a ’Skins fan instead of switching to the Cowboys and get a “bandwaggoner” label for it?

Surely you mean, someone who jumps from team to team depending on who’s doing good (winning) or popular at the time, right? Regardless of where they live, if there’s a local team or not, all those other considerations.

Sorry, man, otherwise it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Hey Joe

What do the Cards fans think of LaRod?? He’s from my hometown, graduated my both my high school and college alma maters and an acquaintance of mine. Back home, everyone thinks he’s doing great given his size limitations. I personalize think he’ll develop into a Darren Sproles kind of back. I try to watch him play anytime the Cowboys aren’t playing.

Do you think he has a shot of making the pro bowl this season as a returner??

Lets just go over this disappointments

QB play

Offensive Line

Defense

Running Game

All of those things that you mentioned are huge disappointments. Before the year began, I thought that the Quarterback would just need to be average, and that the ground game would be better this year, and that the Defense would be able to help keep this team in games. I was expecting a 9-7 record and to at least be competitive in the NFC West. Dead wrong.

tough season bro

but the Cardinals imo have alot of pieces in place
Beanie and Hightower are a good duo, Fitz is a beast, your DL is your best strength imo with all that depth, Williams at NT is going to be a great player, Dockett is a beast straight up and he plays mean, Campbell continues to get better (I follow the U players im a fan of the U) you got DRC, who is having a off year but is still a great corner
secondary is shaky, you need another CB opposite of DRC, would of been your first pick if not for a need for a QB, Rhodes is a good player I live in NY and I wanted us to get him badly ILB needs work, but Darryl Washington from TCU was a nice nice draft pick man I really thought Williams and Washington were great value draft picks I love both of those players
need another S thats overall how I feel about the Cardinals, and a QB is a big big need man

should be a good game, no road game is easy in the NFL but I really think we should dominate this game because of who is playing QB for you guys

its obvious your going QB rd 1 but who would you say in rds 2 and 3? OL OLB CB gotta be needs right?
does Hightower run well against a 3-4? how does your offense pair up against a 3-4? same for your defense? and what WR do you think will give us trouble besides Fitz? a guy like Breaston and Duecet are good slot WR’s imo again you got alot of pieces in place man, just need a QB a pass rusher

by Archie Barberio on Dec 21, 2010 7:48 PM CST reply actions

Offensive Line or Outside Linebacker

Greg Toler is in his first year as a starter at Cornerback and he has been good for most of the year. Great tackler too.

Hightower runs well when the offensive line actually opens holes for him, he has improved a lot since 2008.

It looks like Doucet will be out, he had some kind of hip injury and he was carted off the field, but the 3rd round pick Andre Roberts who is returning Punts and playing as the 4th Receiver has played very well since the Vikings game after struggling before then. Breaston is also a solid #2.

Just wanted to say it’s always a pleasure to have fans like you over. Knowledgeable guys willing to answer our questions and engage in some game/team talk. More so when the loyalty and passion for their team’s combined with a love for the sport, the game.

Thanks for doing this. Best of the Season to you.

Hoping for a best of the season from both our squads come Saturday night so we can put this Christmas to bed with an enjoyable, interesting and well-fought game.

No problem

All of the communities at SBN are pretty good, so I don’t mind doing it.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team(s), throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.

Congratulations, Joe

Santa gave me just the gift I’d asked for. An enjoyable, interesting and well-fought game.

Even this lump of coal in the stocking toe. With the right pressure, I see a diamond.

Again, congrats. Hope you enjoyed it too.
