An interesting Free Agent possibility?
Champ Bailey is not going to be back in Denver. He also recently told ESPN that he wanted to switch positions to Safety to prolong his career. I could see him making a pretty good Safety. He's not a bad tackler and playing the Center Field position (and covering guys in the slot) would be good for his skill set. I could see him having an Ed Reed type of impact, at least for 2-3 seasons.
Obviously, we need a starting safety, maybe two. Having him back there would immediately make the secondary stronger and guys like Jenkins and Newman probably wouldnt give up as many plays with a ballhawk back there like Champ. He certainly wouldnt take the terrible angles Ball does to get to a receiver.
We wont come cheap, I know. However, if I were running this team there are a lot of guys I would be giving their walking papers and saving some money. Columbo, Bigg, Barber, maybe Brooking, maybe Roy Williams, etc. I think Jerry will be a rather big player in the Free Agent market this year. I see one big signing on each side of the ball.

I'd do it
If anything, it can be a stop gap with a proven player, and he could mentor the you guys like Akwasi. Unless we luck up and get a great safety (which there doesn’t appear to be any of) in the draft, I wouldn’t see why not.
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
count me in,
at least he knows how to make a play on the ball.
Davie Wilson
"how bout them cowboys"!!!
cosign
he is a Pro Bowl player that still plays at a high level
and this guy actually wants to play FS
and at worst your getting a top notch player for 2 solid seasons, Champ can play at that level for 2 seasons more at least
we gotta hit free agency hard this year, we went cheap the last 3 years
we get a top notch OL and FS that gives us more wiggle room in the draft
I still say 3rd rd is the round to grab a FS, Duenta Williams Kenny Tate(who really impressed me) Jaquan Jarrett Quinton Carter are all going to be there

The WalterFootball mock draft just updated today
Has Dallas selecting Kenny Tate in the 2nd round. Deunta Williams goes at the top of the 2nd round as well. Carter and Jarrett both go in the mid-3rd however, and would be available for Dallas to select. Just FYI.
Moffitt
the Guard from Wisconsin they have him going in the 3rd, I think he could be a steal
Carimi is really good but nobody talks about Moffitt
Walter has us taking Prince and Tate our first 2 picks, that would seriously improve our secondary a tons

How in the hell do these people have
Cam Newton and Jake Locker going before Ryan Mallett?
The only QB, in my opinion that is possibly better than Mallet, is obviously Luck.

It's a December mock draft.
I wouldn’t read too much into it.

And...
it’s Walter Football. Definitely don’t read too much into it.
Cite Walter Football as an “expert” source over on SBNation’s “Mocking The Draft” and you’re likely to get laughed off the board.
Walter Cherepinsky is not a professional scout, nor does he have any football ties. He’s a fan, nothing more, nothing less. His opinion isn’t much more informed than some of the more respected posters on this forum. Here’s his website for his real job: http://prosalesguide.com/
His final mock right before the draft ended up being way off.
Michael Abromowitz from “The Football Expert” gets the player draft order a lot closer year after year than most other mock draft “experts”. Of course, that may be because he doesn’t start mocking drafts and falling in love with players before the NFL regular season or NCAAFB bowl season is even over yet.

Deunta Williams...
just got hurt in their Bowl game. He went in for x-rays after being carted off the field due to a “severe RT foot/ankle injury”. That could shake up the Safety rankings depending on how severe it ends up being.
Rabid and luvin' it
Update
Deunta Williams broke his RT fibula right above the ankle. It was ugly, but it has been set. That’s really too bad for the guy.
Rabid and luvin' it
Why not if for no other reason to mentor the guys and be a stop gap for maybe 2years.
Defn get rid of every guy you mention also. Lets do it.
Then Grab Mangkins and a top DT with out first round pick and the boys are back
yep, me too
"You have to have the fighting spirit. You have to force moves and take chances" (Bobby Fischer)
I'm generally against signing old FAs
but this is the time to make an exception. Plug Champ in at FS an our whole secondary is upgraded. We have two desperate areas of need – OL and DBs, and can’t solve them all internally.
Champ does not tackle well enough to play S.
He is not much of an upgrade over Newman and will not come cheap.
What?
He is not much of an upgrade over Newman
Among starting CBs this year, Champ is one of the top 5 and Newman one of the bottom 5.
"You have to have the fighting spirit. You have to force moves and take chances" (Bobby Fischer)
stats can be misleading
when you have zero safety help & barely any pressure up front in a 3-4 scheme CBs are going to get beat. WRs have a huge advantage over CBs with all the rules & plus you can only stick with a WR for so long which is why a pass rush is important. i doubt any CB in the NFL would have great numbers playing on this defense.
if we don’t get the front fixed then it won’t matter who we have playing in the secondary. stopping the run & getting pressure is extremely important…
the definition of insanity should have a picture of Jerry Jones next to it. he has no idea what he is doing or that its wrong...
In this case...
they are pretty accurate. Do you honestly think the Denver Broncos are getting more pressure on the QB than our Defense is? You do know they run a 3-4 D as well, right?
Some numbers: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/sortableStats?div=NFL&table=tackle&stat=tacSack&sortType=nfl-player-stats-defense&dir=descending
Ware is in a 3 way tie for 3rd (Mathews & Babin) most sacks in the league with 12.5
Mario Haggan has the most sacks for Denver with 5, good for a 8 way tie for 53rd in the league.
Our JRat and Denver’s D.J Williams both have 4.5 sacks.
As a matter of fact, Denver is last in the league in team sacks with only 18 (next worse is Cinn & TB with 23 apiece). Dallas is #17 with 30 (tied with Minn, NO, Car & SF) : http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/defense/sort/sacks
Denver lost their best pass rusher, Elvis Dumervil, back in August. They have really struggled to pressure the QB all season without him.

Even if all else stayed the same on our defense,
and we simply drop Newman and add Champ, we just got better.

He's only had 1 missed tackle all year.

I like him better at CB

More Players Will Declare For The Draft
Free Agency starts right away….pray for the Cowboys to make improvements. Adding Champ would make a huge change.
Several underclassment will enter the draft after the bowl games, and who could blame them. Ther are several. Like..OK State WR Blackmon would go in the first round and that would have effect on all of the later picks.
Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.
yes indeed
The 2nd and 3rd rounds already look nice had with others declaring they will only improve the depth, love it!
Oh and ah hell yeah take Champ! If this is at all possible we have to jump at the chance.

Champ Bailey at FS?
Hell yeah. Where do I sign?

Honestly it's probably the best way to improve the position.
What other FA safety that will be available would be better than Champ Bailey? Same question goes for the draft. Sign him, put him back there, sign one of the top FA guards, and that gives you a lot more flexibility in the draft.
I love this idea.

Well...
it would be hard to say seeing how it would be Bailey’s first season playing Safety.
Some FA Safeties that should be available:
Brodney Pool – Jets – 26 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?id=3179&sport=NFL
Bernard Pollard – Texans – 26 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=nfl&id=3700
Roman Harper – Saints – 28 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=nfl&id=3697
Reed Doughty – Redskins – 28 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=nfl&id=3974
Dawan Landry – Ravens – 28 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=nfl&id=3956
Darren Sharper – Saints – 35 – Chance of retirement? http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=nfl&id=1814
Rabid and luvin' it
I like Roman Harper
He would come a lot cheaper than Champ, but Champ has a chance to be a Pro Bowl Safety. But Champ would want top dollar. Would still love to see it happen.
At this point I'd take Roy Williams back
But Champ would be a awesome pick up. Jerry will go big in free agency if he wants to hit the ground running next season.
wow, how quickly we forget. Sensabaugh is an all-star compared to Roy.

Yeah I would take Champ in a heartbeat I think.
He is a samrt player and could make the transition. Plus, just to have him as a leader in our secondary would be worth it.

If I had a nickel for every time the Eagles won the Super Bowl, I would have zero nickels
Yep.
The more I think about it the more I really really really like the idea of signing him.

This is the type of smart thinking I hope Jerrah is capable of
Don’t think there are any types of coverages Champ wouldn’t be familiar with enough to be able to direct your backfield for the next couple of years. Wouldn’t necessarily be a progress stopper, either.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
Champ Bailey would be another case of overpaying a declining veteran.
Dallas has a horrible history of this since Jerry bought the team and it is why we have languished in mediocrity. Enough is enough. He can not play S. He is not nearly physical enough and will be way to expensive.
This reminds me of the Ty Law thing a couple of years ago
Law too thought he’d prolong his career at safety—but what he really wanted was one more giant contract. If I remember correctly, no teams were interested in doing that with Law at his price. Same deal with Champ—if he’s willing to sign a 2-year deal at average FS or 3rd CB money, sure. But I’m guessing he’ll want franchise CB money, and that’s a bad deal.
by greatwhitenorth on Dec 31, 2010 11:27 AM CST reply actions
big difference
I thought Law was washed up and had old balls at that time
Ive seen Champ a few times and to me he still looks like his balls are fresh
by Archie Barberio on Dec 31, 2010 5:55 PM CST up reply actions
i thought Law as done then also but i think Champ has more tread then he did at the time.

i think Champ has been a great CB in this league but he might still have value as a CB
he could guard the slot WR which has been problem for this team. i still think we need a solid SS in the draft that could replace Sensabaugh bc i don’t see how he gets a new contract. i don’t see anyone in house that looks to be a solid replacement (Church & McCray are just special teamers imo)
the McDaniel kid from Clemson could be a great pick up depending what they do to fix the DL & OL in FA or early in the draft.
