In order to be a dynamic offense, a football team needs must have a consistent and well rounded offensive line. Did the Cowboys have a consistent and well-rounded offensive line? However, considering all their past failures, the pre-season picks, and their inadequacies in the offensive line, the Cowboys had an outstanding year. The Cowboys won 11 games, the Cowboys gelled toward the end of the season, the Cowboys found leadership, and the Cowboys won a Playoff game! These are all great feats most of us did not expect at the beginning of the season. We were hopeful but skeptical this type of season would come to fruition.
What did the Cowboys do well this year? Well, anytime they passed to Miles Austin, they were successful. The Cowboys ran the delay, especially to Felix Jones, to perfection. They also pulled guards Leonard Davis and Kyle Kosier a great deal. What did the Cowboys not do well? The power run game was non-existent. Does the Charger game ring a bell? Does the playoff loss ring a bell? The Cowboys got away without a power running game for most of the season, but when they played great teams, like the Chargers and Vikings, they paid for it. The delays and the pulling in the Vikings game were an exercise in futility as Howard Cosell used to say. The delays were met with the Williams’ tandem and Ray Edwards in the backfield. This needs to be fixed. If it is the Cowboys are a “contenda”.
The biggest weakness in the Cowboys team is the offensive line. I know everybody’s clamoring for a safety to replace Ken Hamlin and a nose tackle to spell Jay Ratliff. Actually those positions are fine. Hamlin will be pushed by his namesake next year and, Jerry and Co. will find an adequate NT to give Ratliff a break, either through the draft or free agency. What the Cowboys really need to focus on is a replacement for Leonard Davis and Mark Colombo. Many people have a problem with Kosier, and I just don’t see it. People say he gets pushed around by big tackles. Well, it might happen on occasion, but what really happens much more is Leonard Davis whiffing on blocks. For a millionaire OG, that sure is a shame. Mr. Jones please find a guard that can challenge or take Davis’ job during the off season. Colombo sure liked like a statue out there against the Vikings. I had a gut feeling they should have gone with Free even in the Eagle game. He’s quicker and might have handled Edwards better. All was moot of course when Adams got hurt. Free needs a shot at RT and I believe he’ll take the job this off-season, If Colombo doesn’t act like a baby and pushes people out of the line up when they’re going to replace him in practice. Be mean and nasty in games, Columbo, not it practice. You might just lose your job. Adams still has a year left in the tank; don’t mess with Romo’s blind side. Judging by Free’s performance, he’ll replace Adams soon. The Cowboys need to draft the best tackle and guard available in the first two rounds.
If the Cowboys can power run GTFOH! Let’s fix the line NOW!
