Antrel Rolle - good fit or no?

PFT reported that the Cardinals may cut Antrel Rolle because he's due a $4 mil roster bonus soon.

Star-divide

Would this guy be a good fit for Dallas? He's had 10 INTs over the past 3 seasons and is the kind of ballhawking playmaker Dallas could use on defense. It would also allow Jerry to go a different direction in the draft rather than having to pick a safety, and he could go ahead and cut Hamlin.a

Woops. This was reported by the Cardinals official website, not PFT.

It is an interesting idea.

I don’t know much about Rolle other than that he had four picks, but I am a little skeptical about it being a pure money move.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

hmm..

i don’t think he can command the Defense like Ken Hamlin, Rolle is always on Highlight reels, either chasing after someone or whiffing on a tackle. Hamlin is an OKAY but not great safety, I’m happy with Hamlin because since he started to don the Star on the helmet, our deep coverage have been so much better. I know everyone wants Hamlin gone but if you go back and look at the game tapes, not a lot of passes where thrown in his area (deep middle). we gave up a lot of yards on check downs and WR screen because our CB have trouble tackling..

Antrel Rolle

What about Antonio Cromartie? We could probably trade Choice straight up for him and convert him to safety. Tons of speed and length….good run support. Cheap for Jerry and he can concentrate on getting the best OL available in the first and maybe Mardy Gilyard in the 2nd. Love this guy in the second. Decent size, great speed and a gamebreaker in the return game. If Ogletree’s ready… great, then we cut Roy next year and our receiving corp just got very deep (and young). 3rd string RBs can be picked up in any draft in the the 4th or 5th round. Choice is a nice player, but we need help in the defensive backfield a lot more than we need a talented 3rd RB spending most of his time on the bench.

Good run support?

Where on earth did you hear that? He might be the worst CB in the league in run support. He hates contact and tackling. His abilities are at Cornerback only. He would make a horrible safety. I’ve never heard of a safety who hates contact. It would be like Deion playing safety.

Hey, hey...

That title is reserved for Asante Samuel. He’s like a less dominant version of Prime Time.

You beat me to the punch, 9to19

I came here to post this exact question. I think its something to entertain. Rolle had some escalators in his contract which will pay him like $12M this season. Arizona already has the highest paid Safety in the NFL in Adrian Wilson, at over $8M. They are not going to pay $20M for their two safeties. So, that’s the reason he’s being released, nothing more. I believe they were happy with his play this year … he made the Pro Bowl.

So, here’s some data on Rolle. He was drafted 8th overall in 2005 (3 picks before DeMarcus … ouch!) out of Miami. He came into the league as a Corner, and didnt play very well. He lost his job, but last year was moved to Free Safety. He can run with WRs. He’s a ballhawk as is evident by his 5 picks in 2007. And when he gets the ball in his hands he can do something with it. In that 2007 season he led the NFL in INT Return Yards (231) and Return TDs with 3. As I mentioned he made the Pro Bowl this year, but I believe it was due to someone not attending, so I think he was originally an alternate.

Its also interesting to note he played the role of Wildcat QB for Arizona last year. And he played it pretty well. He threw a couple of passes from that formation.

If we could pick him up on the cheap, I think he would be an upgrade to Hamlin. It might be possible to release Hamlin and pick up Rolle for the same price. In that case, I would make that move. It would allow Dallas to be more selective in the draft with that hole filled.

He would make a great fit....

He would be an upgrade over Ken Hamlin..The only reason the Cardinals are going to release him is because they really want to resign Dansby and their NT to long term deals.

He knows he will have to take a pay cut over his current deal

I’m not sure the market will be that great for him, honestly. I certainly dont think we should break the bank, but Hamlin has a huge salary this year. If we can get him for the same price (likely) then we should consider it.

We might get him for

around the same as Hamlin’s first contract w/ us

probably, but so will Sensabaugh

Chargers just released LT BTW….

Rolle is over-rated

He had a couple seasons with decent INT totals, but he also gets burned a lot. (see the 2009 playoffs)
AZ is dumping him because he’s overpaid. I’d rather keep Hamlin than sign Rolle.
Hamlin’s replacement should be drafted. Burnett or Allen in the 2nd rd.

Is he fast enough to play FS though?

I think he’s a better fit at SS.

right

and Sensi would play FS like he did in Jacksonville when he had his best year as a safety. I think Sensi is a more natural fit at FS.

Rolle is a much better safety than Hamlin

They were very happy with Rolle at saftey, but the problem is they like the other two players that are RFA’s better…

Actually, the problem is

Arizona keeps signing these terrible contracts with their players. They allow these huge escalations in pay. So, now Rolle’s contract for next year would make him the highest paid Safety in the history of the game, and by about 50%. Its an insane contract. Arizona likes him, but they cant live up to the contract they allowed.

by TCBinNYC on Feb 23, 2010 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

agreed....they really want to resign Dansby also

If we get him

it fixes us at safety for a while, if we also sign Sensa. This gives us the opportunity to get another corner in the second or third round.

I’m all for it.

I'd love to see him here...

He would be a big step up over Hamlin IMO

by Damnsammit on Feb 23, 2010 8:10 PM CST reply actions

The more I think about it ...

The more I like the idea. I really think you could cut Ken Hamlin and sign Rolle to a 3 year deal and it would be a net-net on salary.

And then it frees us up to draft BPA with the only real glaring need at O Line. But in this scenario, if an O Lineman of value is not there in the first they can draft BPA and wait on the line. There will still be decent Tackle prospects in the 2nd available and excellent interior lineman prospects.

With our safety situation fixed for a few years, we could pick up a guy like Weatherspoon or Odrick or even a WR/KR/PR (which I’m against taking now because we have bigger concerns.) He’s also still young. This makes a lot of sense to me.
