Darren Sharper?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4937036
Looks like the Saints are going to let Sharper test the market - should the Boys be interested?
I know he's a little on the older side of what we're looking for, but maybe for a short term deal he could work? Maybe one of you who are more knowledgeable than I will realize that I'm talkin' crazy - but in my mind I see us signing Sharper for a year to bring some ballhawking to our secondary for a year or two (led the league in INTs and had 3 return TDs), which will allow us to take a OL in the first round to help that unit and maybe like Raf said, take a less polished Safety in the second round like Burnett from GTech who can be groomed for a year or under a proven star like Sharper.

Before he went to the Vikings
I wanted the Boys to pick him up. But I’ll have to pass this time. He had a real good year last year, but we already have too many starters on both sides of the ball that could get old in a hurry on us.
From what I heard
that is mistaken interpretation of events.
The Saints definitely want to keep Sharper. Sharper knows the Saints let him play to his strengths in their defensive system. So they are gonna show Sharper some love by NOT franchise tagging him. This will let Sharper (presumably) field offers and establish a market value and negotiate from there.

Sort of agree, sort of don’t…
I think the Saints would like to resign Sharper at a figure that he’s not interested in, and they definitely don’t want overpay for a 34-year-old safety by franchising him when they have a really nice up-and-comer that can play the position in Malcolm Jenkins. Playing the “We respect you too much to franchise you card” is nice PR, but what they’re really saying is “See what you can get, and if there’s a team dumb enough to give you a huge contract, best of luck. If not, we’ll gladly have you back.”
TRUE
but Sharper knows as well that teams are UNLIKELY to let him play in the style that is conducive to him running around and make plays.
Bottom Line? Both sides know they want to make a deal.
Sharper will NOT be a Cowboy.

I’m an Eagle fan, and the Eagles take these calculated risks all the time – Look no further than last year’s situation with Brian Dawkins. It’s a carbon copy example. The Eagles wanted Dawkins to stay, and Dawkins wanted to stay – (And the Eagles style of play was a perfect fit for Dawkins’ skill set for more than a decade.) But the Eagles didn’t count on a team like Denver that was willing to way overpay for him, and it bit them in the ass… badly. The end result was that Dawkins was just fine in another system, as Sharper would likely be too.
Sharper has been better than Dawk the last two seasons...
Like them both, but Sharper is clearly the better playmaker at this point in their careers

Sharpers way better in coverage.
the Eagles missed Dawks emotional leadership badly though, I doubt we’d have beaten Philly 3 times if he was still on the team.

Hate to say I agree
Dawkins was a pest and seemed to make crucial plays when needed

Sharper is a good DB
But you have to have an open system for him to excell in. When he was in Minnesota he didn’t get anywhere near the int’s he got with the Saints but then the Vikes play a tight cover 2 that kept him in check from flying around the field. The Saints score (alot) and so can keep up with the mistakes that he will make from time to time as he goes for the gold. He is a good DB and you would be silly not to be interested in him, but you definitely need to look at how you handle your DB’s before you decide on picking him up.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
No, no, and no
He is quite old and I really don’t think his play was as spectacular as everyone made it out to be. Its great to cause turnovers but he got burned a good amount too. No sense in overpaying him like we would have to.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
How about Cromarterie looks like SD is looking to shop him
We were talking about this on the Daily Norseman but decided that he wouldn’t work out for us as he’s a poor tackler.
Looking at him he seems like a decetn DB with a lot of years ahead of him.

+1
Mike Mayock is really, really high on Earl Thomas. The last time Mayock was this highly touted by him(Matt Ryan) he turned out pretty well.
I support getting him for one year
it’s an uncapped year and Jerry is going to be making money hand over fist. He will improve us in the backfield.

I don't care where he was drafted
he was the man at Clemson. He can play football.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
the kid is a long shot....if he wasnt we wouldnt be looking for a safety in the draft/...

I'm a skeptical fan
But you seem to be pretty high on him. If he’s that good, how come he hasn’t displaced Alan Ball yet?

he's been injured
Hamlin is a baller, he’ll be starting for us at some point, you can take that to the bank.
In Romo we Trust
Hamlin was rated by most as a
2nd-3rd round pick last year, no idea what dropped him, maybe 40 time but he is a good player that is a student of the game and until he broke his wrist was starting to show signs of playmaking ability in camp

why, Romo and Austin weren't even drafted
and I guess you don’t have much faith in Rat either??
Doesn’t matter how you’re acquired, it’s how good you really are.

Cromartie....its the scheme in SD and I tend to agree...
So what were the specific complaints?
“To me, I felt like we played too much zone,” Cromartie said. “As we would say, we felt like we had two of the best corners in the NFL, me and Jammer, and we played too much zone coverage, rather than man [coverage].”
MIller then asked whether Cromartie is hoping to play in a 3-4 defense that uses press-man coverage.
“I’d just like to play in a defense that’s aggressive, period, to the point of, let us use our strengths and use our abilities,” Cromartie said. “Ever since I came out, my first two years it was like that. We had Coach [Wade] Phillips and Coach [Ted] Cottrell [as defensive coordinators]. My second year, the 2007 and 2006 seasons, that’s exactly how we played. We may have played a cover-4 defense but there was a lot of press-man that depended on us. We let the front seven do their thing and we tried to handle everything in the back end.”
So it looks like Cromartie’s days in San Diego are numbered, even though he also said he’d “love to continue to finish out either my contract or my career in San Diego.” Even if he’s not traded before the 2010 deadline, it’s highly unlikely he’ll stay with the Chargers after his rookie contract expires at the end of the coming season.
Like I said in a previous thread Cromartie fell off once Wade left…..

-The Ed Reed
point being
Wade drafted him, knows how to use him and he is a young player w/ tremendous physical talent, I think if they asked for just Choice I probably would do the deal…. I know that we have 2 good corners but Newman isn’t in his 20s anymore and if he gets injured our CBs go from one of the best duos to at best slightly above average. Right now Choice isn’t going to get as many snaps as Cromartie would if he played as a nickle safety right now and moved into the starting lineup in a few years and good RBs can be found easier w/ out spending a premium pick while for a corner its tougher to find a top flight corner w/ out spending a premium pick

Jerry shoots a lot of stuff down that ends up happening anyway.
Don’t read too far into anything Cowboys officials say this time of year.
Ready for some baseball.
You should know Jerry says one thing and does another...
Not saying it will happen, but I wouldnt be surprised. I wouldnt mind seeing them push MB3 for Cromartie
"Austin made the play, Austin saved the day" Brad Sham
Sharper
would be a costly short term solution. We don’t need him that bad.He is not a "Prime Time " player so IMHO we pass on him.
Why is SD trading Cromartie? If he were so great I’m sure they would try to keep him.
MBIII is no throw away player.I don’t see us getting value if we trade him.

Cromartie is overrated
You’re exactly right, if he was good, SD wouldn’t be looking to trade him.
In Romo we Trust
Cromartie doesnt fit in their system and wants out...

I would LOVE....
To get Sharper. He would give us the Ed Reed type centerfield we need; which would be the final piece for Wade’s secondary and his defense as a whole.
