First Cowboys Mock 2010 Draft - Entirely Way too Early edition

So a tad bit of a preface; this is my first attempt at a fanpost for the BTB nation after a year and a half or so of lurking, so I am still getting use to the HTML format and such on SBnation.. If there is any problems I would appreciate the help to fix anything. Thank you and enjoy, and hopefully we will be celebrating the 6th ring in the home stadium this coming season.

Round 1 - 27: Mike Iupati - G - Idaho

Seem all too good to be true? Maybe, but Dallas has been lacking getting this young mauler in the interior line for the last few years, and Iupati makes all too much sense. He played both guard and tackle at Idaho, so he really could spend time developing as guard and potentially a long term tackle answer. He is a bit raw, yes, but with his impressive bulk (6’6", 330 lbs.), he need’s to be a Cowboy next year. He has massively long arms which are great for this offense in particular which is more about pure strength in initial contact rather then down the field blocking, yet he is still young and quick enough to get to the next level. He also was a team captain for the Vandals and a three year starter in Idaho, so I believe his level of professionalism and his ability to adjust to the next level will be rather smooth. He also didn’t allow a single sack last year, as reported by Scouts.com, which, after seeing the Minnesota game in the post season, we need to address. Then, of course, there are reports of Dallas’ coaching staff all "perking up" when Iupati’s name was announced at the Senior Bowl Weigh-Ins, reported by Dallas Morning News. Yeah…Iupati needs a star on his helmet in the future.

Round 2 - 59: Jordan Shipley – WR/KR – Texas

A tad bit of a reach, and this pick depends on the future of both Crayton and Hurd in Dallas, but I feel that this pick could be very likely. Shipley will have instant fans, after being a huge impact player for the Horns last year, and he could instantly come in and push Ogletree for that third wide out spot, assuming the aforementioned two leave this off-season. Shipley also could come in and instantly help out on special teams, as he had great success returning for the Longhorns over the years. I’ll be open to admit that part of this is a bit of a homer pick, as I am a fan of both the Horns and the Cowboys, and Shipley has been amazing, and he is going to be a great pro. A good route runner, Shipley makes up for his lack of size with his great combo of hands and speed. And being that he wouldn’t me anymore then a 3rd wide receiver here, at least to start, he could develop slowly. Also, as Cowboy fan’s be expected to see Roy Willie back here next year at the number 2 receiver spot. The offense still was electric last year, and all reports have said how the Boy’s and Roy both expect to improve for next year. It may lead to us needing a first round wide out in next years draft to replace him, but we can worry about that when the time comes. For now, get that slot and return spot answered for years to come, and hope that Shipley can make a push for the number 2 spot.

Round 3 - 91: Reshad Jones - FS – Georgia

If the pick above was a reach, then this one is hopefully Dallas grabbing a player with a somewhat falling stock. Jones, if still available in the end of the 3rd, needs to be the Cowboys pick. First of all, as solid as Hamlin has been, Dallas still lacks that playmaker at the safety positions. Look at the teams which have had post season success over the last few years, and you’ll notice that the majority have had playmaking safeties. The Eagles had it with Dawkins. The Pat’s had it with Harrison. The Ravens, whose defense has been great for years, has had Reed and the Steelers have had a ton of success since they got Troy. Even pushing it further back, look at Rod Woodson jumping around from team to team and seeing each team having instant success, or the same really with Darren Sharper. Point being, Dallas need’s this and I don’t see it in Ken Hamlin. I do however, see some ability there with Jones. Jones at one point could have been considered a first round pick, and his stock fell really due to the overall fall of the Bulldogs this season, especially on defense, where Jones took a lot of the misled blame. There are many scouts who feel Jones will have much more success on the pro level if he can get into a solid enough defense, which Dallas does have.

Round 4 - 123: Pat Angerer - ILB – Iowa

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit, Bobby Carpenter impressed me this year. However, and this is a big however, is he going to be worth the money he is going to want in the future? Is he worth what we are giving him now? Bradie James, while a great player, isn’t getting any younger. Keith Brooking, while I appreciate EVERYTHING he brought to this defense and will for at least the 2010 season, certainly isn’t getting younger. That leaves a completely unproven Jason Williams at the ILB spot. Angerer is a tough linebacker, who had a very solid 2009 season for the Hawkeyes, finishing with 145 tackles(5 for a loss), 1 sack, 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles, and 6 passes defended in 13 games. He is a tad bit undersized at 6’1" and 235 lbs, but he certainly could afford to bulk up to the 250s. He also has great football instincts. He seem’s like the perfect "Wade" player, that is a team first guy who will listen to his head coach, but he is a hard working football player 340x_medium

Round 6 - 187: Hunter Lawrence - K - Texas

The Cowboys need a new kicker. Again. I thought we had this worked out when we got Folk, but that obviously wasn’t the case and his injury affected him more then any of us really knew. Time to move on, and I want Hunter Lawrence for one reason. His kick against Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game which sent the Longhorns to the title game. That kick, which was in Cowboys Stadium mind you, was a bigger kick then Folk, Suisham, or really, anyone has kicked in the Stadium since it’s opening, and he was clutch. Aside from that, Lawerence also has been a good kicker for the last few years, going 10/12 in 2008 with a long of 51 and 24/27 in 2009 with a long of 49. I hope Beuhler can work it out and be the long term answer so we don’t have to carry two kickers, but if that isn’t going to be the case, I wouldn’t mind spending a 6th rounder on someone who can help the team. With a clutch kicker, we potentially could have won at least one more game this year and had home field in the post season. Yeah, let’s get this worked out

Round 7 - 219: Ryan Stamper - OLB – Florida

And to finalize the 2010 NFL draft for the Dallas Cowboys, the Cowboys will select yet another pass rushing linebacker. I would like to see a lineman here, and you may(especially if Spears leaves and they don’t grab a free agent DE), but for now let’s assume one of those two things happen. Dallas, especially with Wade running this defense, will always be looking for pass rushers on defense, and as a 3-4 defense, you can never really have enough depth at the linebacker position. Stamper helped lead the Gators defense again this year, and has the speed to learn the position. Once again, this just seem’s like the typical Dallas/Wade pick in this position in the draft.

Other potential candidates in the first three rounds (as anything past that depends on who falls):

Round 1: Charles Brown – OT from USC, Terrence Cody – NT from Alabama, Maurkice Pouncey – C/G from Florida, Corey Wootton – DE/DT from Northwestern

Round 2: Kyle Calloway – OT from Iowa, Nate Allen – FS from South Florida

Round 3: Jason Fox – OT from Miami, Morgan Burnett – FS from Georgia Tech, Mike Johnson – G from Alabama

Any type of constructive criticism is more then welcome

If Iupati falls to 27 then he is a great choice. I’m not sure he makes it that far though. I really like the Shipley pick. It’s a bit early for him but he could come in and upgrade our receiving game right away. He is the perfect guy for the slot position. Jones probably won’t fall that far. He’s a mid 2nd round grade. I would surprised if he fell to us at 59. Angerer is a good player but I’m not sure how he would fit into the 3-4. He came out of a basic defense at Iowa. I like the Lawrence pick but you could wait until the 7th round to take him. I really only see 3 kickers getting drafted and he’s the 3rd of those.
All in all pretty good.

All fair criticisms and I'd like to address them...

I do have fear of Iupati falling that far, due to the hype which has been building around him. I’m hoping his rawness and his lack of a “true” position, and that guards usually go in the mid to late 20s, that we get him. If not, make a move to jump a few positions up to grab him. Shipley and Jones, really, I feel are going to be interchangeable in terms of one falling, and Jones had the less impressive recent season. Jones also isn’t overly fast, which will be sure to frighten some teams away. Angerer is a good run stuffer and not really that much of an athlete, but I feel that is what this defense is lacking on the inside for depth. And I may drop Hunter down lower to grade overall, and probably bump Jones up a bit though in my overall rankings. Thanks

If our draft went this way I would be very happy. Iupati is somewhat of a luxury pick. His rawness would be fine for us because he wouldn’t have to start right away. He could sit for a year and learn behind veteran players. Before the Senior Bowl the mock drafts I was looking at had him going late 1st round. After the Senior Bowl some of them had him going as high as mid 1st round. I think that would be a reach for him but there are some GM’s out there who suck at drafting and love to reach for a player.

Welcome to the BTB posting realm

But I’m not a huge fan of your mock.

Iupati would be wonderful, but at this point there is very little chance he will last until the 27th pick. I think we’re looking at one of the OTs such as Brown, Baluga, Trent Williams, or Davis. If someone falls like an Earl Thomas or Weatherspoon then I could see us going away from Tackle.

The second is too early for Shipley. And what do you think is going to happen to Crayton? He’s under contract at a fair price and he’s not going anywhere. I dont disagree that he will be a good pro and would have a huge fan base here. I could buy this better in the 3rd round. I just dont see a receiver having much opportunity to impact the team this year (although maybe in the return game, like you mentioned.)

The Jones pick in the 3rd is ok. He hasnt impressed me much, but agree safety (hamlin’s spot) is an area of need. Angerer I havent seen play, but he’s definitely undersized. If Joe Pawelek is there (ok, that’s my homer pick as I’m a Bear alum) I would rather have him. He’s a lunch box playmaker type. He doesnt look like much, but will knock guys out and has a nose for the ball. I like the Lawrence pick ok, but I would prefer us to look at a kicker in Free Agency. Maybe Matt Stover who could take the under 45 yard kicks and Beuhler could be our long range guy since he’s less accurate.

Understandable

Again, I am going off of what has been said now, not off of what is to be expected. The biggest knock on Iupati is that he is a very raw athlete, and that he lacks a true position on the line. If I remember correctly back from what I read, I also believe he had surgery done during college as well, which will scare some teams away. But I do think that if he is gone, we need to look at the offensive tackle position. Oh, and Earl Thomas for some miracle falls to us, I would love to see Dallas make the pick. The problem with doing these things prior to the pro days and combine is that you have to go off of mostly game film, when really a healthy balance is needed. But anyway, yeah, Earl Thomas would be wonderful.

Shipley I see going that high because teams are going to fall in love with his intangibles, and because he again, is benefiting from Wes Welker in New England. I can’t see him making it out of round 2, and he would definitely be gone by the time we pick at the end of the third. Dallas is lucky that we really don’t have many glaring holes, and Shipley has the potential to be a very good pro, and I think that the potential argument will win out here.

As for the rest, Jones, I really believe, is someone who plays better when he has talent who can make him better. He may not be the superstar we need in the secondary(that’s a different debate), but he can help clear up who is our second safety and put to rest the flopping(or speculation of…) with the cornerbacks when unneeded. I’ll have to look out for Pawelek though, as I don’t know much about him but he sounds like a comparable player to Angerer. And Angerer is somewhat a homerish pick in the sense that I live on the Northeast coast, and during Iowa’s run this year, I was able to catch a lot of their games.

Thanks for the welcome also, I hope to be posting(and writing) more articles soon about the draft, as I mean, this is the most down time during the year and there is nothing else football related to do.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Pat agree to a 4 year deal back at the end of the 2007 season? From a report linked here from Dallas News? And according to this article, his contract jumps half a million at the base every year, putting him at an expected $2 million in 2010 and $2.5 in 2011. And being that we are paying for so much above him in Roy, and we are going to have to unload money into Miles, is Pat worth keeping around for his contract? Especially with the likes of Ogletree pushing him?

Note, I am sure we will know more about this as we get closer to the actual draft itself, hence why I said it is Entirely Way Too Early. Any attempt to make a mock draft any time before say, mid to late March, is too early. But I thought I would give it a try.

interesting pick that of

Reshad Jones,i think is schemer, andso i’ve been thinking of him as a possibility, i think he’s what we need a cover safety, a centerfielder, i ‘d rather go with Nate Allen but this guy, Myron Rolle and one guy from Oregon (tj walton i think) they’re all keep me thinking and to be honest the safety position is the one that is stoling my thoughts every single moment, so i hope the boys will put special attention on it, and i hopewe can reach our championschip defense this year with the adittion of a good safety. The only pick i didn’t like at all was de Jordan Shipley one, i think we need to left behind that homer picks, cowboys doesn’t need nice guys to sale tickets, need wins, so i think we must maximize every single pick and think WR isn’t a big need and Jordan Shipley doesn’t worth a second pick. I hope you (Zach22) and all Shipley fans don’t get upset , i’m just trying to make my point…

I vote for a Longhorn-free draft

Iupati looks like he may be long gone before 27, but I’d love the pick if he fell to us.

I wouldn’t mind picking up a safety early(first 3 rounds or so). I don’t know my much Ken Hamlin would be missed. Apparently he lines up the secondary and makes sure they know what to do, but he certainly hasn’t been the playmaker we thought he would be after his first season in Big D. I still wanna’ see what Mike Hamlin has to offer, though.

Huh???

Terry you are not from Texas, so I’ll forgive you your ignorance on Texas players. Bryan Robison, Cedric Benson, Jamaal Charles, MIchael Griffin, Jermichael Finley, David Thomas and countless others are effective players in the pros.
