Cowboys mock draft version 3 w/ Extras

Pre-Combine mock draft which includes the following:  A beautifully done 32 team first round mock draft (Cowboys omitted) Following w/ a specialized Cowboys mock draft, full of insight, useless predictions, retarded judgment and the occasional WTF pick.

Star-divide

First off

The most impressive (yet worst) 1st round mock draft ever:

1.) St. Louis - King Kong Suh, DT - Nebraska - Spags is building up his line to break down opposing lines

2.) Detriot - Gerald McCoy, DT - Oklahoma - Another big man to shore up the middle of a defense, will Detroit win a playoff game, most likely not for awhile but McCoy will help

3.) Tampa- Eric Berry, S - Tennessee - Best safety in the draft

4.) Washington - Russel Okung, OT - Ok. St - Best LT in the draft to take over for Samuels, too bad he won't be able to guard Ware, but really, who can??

5.) KC - Rolando McClain, ILB - Bama - Gives the Chiefs there new leader on the defense as well as the BPA

6.) Seattle - Jimmy Clausen, QB - ND - Can Hasslebeck last a full year anymore, doubtful, does Wallace make anyone cringe...well Seahawk fans do when they see him out there. Carroll knows you need a QB, why else would he bring in the top 15 QBs every yeart to SC when he was there

7.) Da Browns - Joe Haden, CB - Florida - Cleveland's defense will finally.....nah they will still suck but hey, its the Browns

8.) Raiders - Taylor Mays, S - USC - Darth Davis' plan to make the fastest team ever will continue, and so will the losses

9.) Buffalo - Anthony Davis, OT - Rutgers - I think they go w/ Trent Edwards one more year and try to give him some help on the Oline

10.) Denver (from da Bears) - Sam Bradford, QB - Oklahoma - McDaniels has to change his pants, he just got the perfect QB for his system

11.) Jax - Derrick Morgan, DE - GT - Jax add another pass rusher to try and make Peyton become Eli

12.) Miami - CJ Spiller, RB - Clemson - Can Brown stay healthy and Williams said 1 more year and he is done so RB will be a need and Spiller is more explosive than both Brown and Williams

13.) San Fran - Brian Bulaga OT, Iowa - Is Smith the guy, maybe, maybe not, w/ no other top QBs available, they shore up their oline

14.) Seattle - Charles Brown, OT, USC - Jones is pretty much done, Clausen is going to need a LT, Carroll goes w/ a familiar face w/ a lot of potential.

15.) NY (the crappy one) - Earl Thomas, S - Tex - Gives the Giants a safety that will get torched by Romo for years to come

16.) San Fran (from Carolina kittens) - Sergio Kindle, OLB - Tex - San Fran looking to bolster their pass rush gets a very active OLB

17.) Tennessee Titans - Dan Williams, NT - Tennessee - Tennessee tries to find another Haynesworth

18.) Pittsburgh - Mount Cody, NT - Bama - Hampton at most has a few years left, groom his replacement

19.) ATL - jason Pierre-Paul, DE - USF - Atlanta goes w/ the athletic freak w/ so much potential

20.) Houston - Mike Iupati, G - Idaho - Houston's oline is getting there

21.) Cincy - Dez Bryant, WR - Ok. St. - Dez falls like Crabtree did last year, this year he falls far down because of missing basically a full season

22.) NE - Ricky Sapp, OLB - Clemson - the Patriots get a pass rusher...

23.) GB - Bruce Campbell OT, Maryland - Good LT prospect that might be able to help save Rodger's life

24.) Philly (sux) - Sean Weatherspoon, LB - Mizzou - Philly adds some depth and a guy to challenge Gocong

25.) Hark the Raven - Patrick Robinson, CB - Florida State - new CB for the Ravens, not to much to say about it

26.) Cards - Brandon Spikes, ILB - Florida - Fills a need w/ a good LB, also he is half Predator

Whatever will the Cowboys do... not that hard of a guess

28.) San Diego - Jonathan Dwyer, RB - GT - LT's successor

29.) Jets - Golden Tate, WR - ND - Gives Poncho another target, a KSK joke

30.) Vikqueens - Perrish Cox, CB - Ok. St. - Winfield is old, but not Favre old, but they get a guy that will replace him eventually

31.) Colts - Brandon Graham, DE - Michigan - Freeney's injury basically costs Indy the game by Brees having time in the pocket, they get a guy for insurance

32.) Saints - Navarro Bowman, OLB - Penn St. - The SB winners get an OLB to compete

Now for what everyone has been waiting for..... THE COWBOYS MOCK DRAFT!!!!

1st round

Trent Williams, OT - Oklahoma (6'5" 308 lbs)

Trent-williams_medium

via cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com

"Look momma I'm gonna be a Cowboy!!"

Scout report:

Excellent all-around blocker  who is capable of playing either side. - NFL draftcountdown

Pass blocking: Engulfs lesser defensive ends on the edge. Generally bends his knees and anchors well in pass pro. Strong initial punch and coils back quickly. Reaches at times, instead of moving his feet, to maintain control of secondary rush. Recognizes outside blitzers and usually meets them at the corner of the pocket. Effective cut blocker despite his size. Comes out a little flat in his kick slide at times, giving up the corner. May struggle to stay in front of top NFL defensive ends on the edge.

Run blocking: Fires off the line and dominates his man when drive blocking. Turns his man whichever way is needed and sustains the block. Only adequate moving his feet on zone left, at times allowing his man to chase the play. Overextends when trying to punch and looks a bit slow - especially against blitzing linebackers or in space.

Pulling/trapping: Not asked to pull or trap, but is mobile enough to be effective sealing off the MIKE linebacker on strong-side run plays. If moved inside to right guard, would work best in power scheme.

Initial Quickness: Good burst off the snap to run block, and latches onto his man immediately. Sets quickly after his kick slide, and should handle pass protection on the right side. Must prove he has the lateral movement to handle initial rushes on the left side.

Downfield: Reaches linebackers and safeties at the second level quickly off the snap. Gets hands into the jersey and moves his feet to drive the man back. Will miss his target or fail to find someone to hit on occasion. Looks for second target downfield when needed.

Intangibles: Unselfish player who works hard on the field and in practice. Plays through minor injuries. Returned to school despite being a probable second-round pick in order to return to the BCS championship and complete his education.

NFL Comparison: Jammal Brown, New Orleans Saints

Where he fits:

A guy that can play nearly every position on the line and will become our RT of the future

Round 2:

Morgan Burnett, S - GT (6'1" 210)

Virginia_tech_v_georgia_tech_snh6w7iieqgl_medium

via www2.pictures.zimbio.com

"I finally have a chance to win a Championship!!!"

Scout reports:

It did not take much time for Morgan Burnett to make an impact on Georgia Tech's defense. As a true freshman in 2007, Burnett played in all 13 games and earned his first career start late in the season. Despite the limited playing time, Burnett led the team with three interceptions and ranked fifth in tackles with 57. That success, especially late in the campaign, led to high expectations in 2008; Burnett did not disappoint. The 6-1 free safety led the Yellow Jackets with 93 tackles, seven interceptions, eight pass breakups and 15 passes defended -- not bad at all for a sophomore. He was recognized by many media outlets for his impressive season.

Burnett plays the rover position at Georgia Tech, but he has the versatility to play either safety spot in the NFL. In most systems he would be a strong safety, but heading into the 2009 season he was considered second only to Eric Berry among safeties according to many pundits.

Round 3

Mardy Gilyard, WR - Cincy (6' 179 lbs)

Mardygilyard_medium

"Hey Roy, this is how you catch the ball"

Scout Report:

Release: Does not always explode off the line because he is a long strider (and sometimes he wants to lull a defender to sleep). When challenged in press, however, he seems to find another gear after making a hesitation move to freeze the corner. Also uses his long arms to free himself of the jam.

Hands: Inconsistent hands, short-arming quick screens when hearing footsteps on one play then making a highlight-reel grab while flying through the air on the next. Tracks the ball over his shoulder. Will snatch the ball away from his frame and fully extend to bring in wide throws. Excellent body control whether running down the seam or tapping his feet before going out of bounds. Lacks the strength to hold onto catches after a big hit, and has ball security issues on kickoff returns.

Route running: Rounds off too many of his routes but occasionally sticks his foot in the ground and comes back at a perfect 45-degree angle on a deep out. Uses head fakes to convince defenses he's running one route before snapping out into another. Best on seam and crossing routes where he runs free before getting the ball in his hands.

After the catch: Although he does not have great timed speed, he is a very elusive runner in space. Shifty hips allow him to avoid defenders running by or with him downfield. Perfect for kickoff returns because he has time to get to top speed and finds creases to fly through while on the run. Gets through some arm tackles and had good vision to find openings after first contact.

Blocking: Efforts blocking downfield when the play comes to his side, getting the angle on his man and extending his arms to maintain contact. Simply lacks the bulk and strength to sustain against larger defensive backs for long.

Intangibles: Worked through troubles of his own making to get back on the field for the Bearcats. Appreciates his stardom and continues to work hard to maintain it. Enjoys working with inner city kids, many of whom have similar backgrounds to his.

NFL Comparison: Steve Breaston, Arizona Cardinals

-------------- CBS Sports

Super smooth athlete --- Good height --- Exceptionally quick --- Fast with excellent acceleration --- Explosive with a burst --- Terrific feet and change of direction skills --- Soft, reliable hands --- Nice body control and ball skills --- Extremely elusive and a real terror in space --- Superb vision --- Shows the ability to separate --- Tough and not afraid to work the middle --- Experienced --- Productive --- Also a fantastic return man.

--------- NFL Draft Countdown

Where he fits:

Gives the Cowboys another receiver to push the ones here, also gives them a good return guy to help a horrible kick return and has a lil more wiggle than the steady Crayton

Round 4

John Jerry, OG - Ole Miss (6'5" 332 lbs)

John_jerry_medium

via assets.sbnation.com

"I pity a foo that plays against the Cowboys"

Scout report:

Pass blocking: Strong punch at the snap as a pass blocker. Sticky hands and can control the pass rusher when he locks on. Can bend at the waist instead of his knees, especially as he wears down. Doesn't consistently place his hands accurately or move his feet actively when in pass protection and too often is left leaning or attempting to recover due to slipped blocks. Has to show more consistent lateral agility and balance to be considered an offensive tackle -- instead of a guard -- in the NFL.

Run blocking: Good initial pop at the line of scrimmage to stun the defender and can overcome his opponent with his strength and mass as a run blocker. Shows some nastiness and looks to pancake his opponent if he senses he's off-balance. Relies on his mass to gain movement at the point of attack.

Pulling/trapping: Surprising agility to get out and around the line. Good initial quickness off the snap, but loses speed quickly and struggles to adjust to moving targets at the second level.

Initial Quickness: Good first-step quickness for the down block, but this is not one of Jerry's relative strengths. Can struggle with smaller, quicker defenders, at least until he gets his hands on them.

Downfield: Intimidating presence at the second level and can wall off defenders from the ballcarrier. Struggles to adjust in space, and too often whiffs at the second level.

Intangibles: Massive man. Not just big, but very strong. Broke the Ole Miss record with 34 repetitions of 225 pounds last year -- a difficult feat considering his long arms. Too heavy and carries unnecessary weight around the middle, which clearly caused him to labor in the second half of games during the 2008 season. Played last season in the 350-360-pound range, but Ole Miss coaches would have liked him closer to 325. The brother of Atlanta Falcons 2009 first-round pick Peria Jerry, a former All-SEC defensive tackle for the Rebels.

NFL Comparison: Leonard Davis, Cowboys

---- CBS Sports

Outstanding height and bulk with long arms --- Powerful and naturally strong --- Stout at the point of attack --- Gets a great push in the run game --- Dominant once locked on --- Solid instincts --- Durable --- Has lots of quality experience --- Offers some versatility --- Great bloodlines.

6th Round

Walter Thurmond, CB - Oregon (5'11" 182 lbs)

610x_medium

via cache.daylife.com

"My ball"

Scout report:

Read & React: Good read-and-react skills. Four-year starter who knows all the tricks. Aggressively jumps routes, but has good agility and straight-line speed to recover. Good run recognition. Quickly discards the receiver to meet the ballcarrier.

Man Coverage: Low and fast coming out of his stance. Quick feet and re-directs easily and closes on the ball with a burst. Relies too much on his athleticism in coverage. Marginal punch in press coverage and too often allows receivers into their route for a corner of his size and long arms.

Zone Coverage: Lanky, athletic cornerback with the size, footwork and speed to fit any defensive scheme. Has primarily played in straight man coverage schemes. Re-directs easily with quick feet and loose hips. Good awareness and tackling ability to play zone coverage. Understands his responsibilities and reads the quarterback's eyes to make plays on the ball.

Closing/Recovery: Good straight-line speed to recover deep if beaten initially. Good, explosive burst to close laterally. Long arms to deflect passes. Times his leaps well and shows natural hands for the interception.

Run Support: Rare willingness to meet the ballcarrier in run support for a cornerback. Evades blockers easily with lateral quickness and vision. Squares up and makes tackles in space.

Tackling: Reliable open-field tackler who breaks down in space to make the secure stop against smaller, quicker athletes. Good effort in pursuit and will lay out to make the tackle.

Intangibles: Showed good toughness last season in battling through a pelvic injury. Missed only one game due to the injury but wasn't 100 percent.

Johnson was a key component in USC's primary tailback rotation and also was the team's top punt returner as a junior in 2008. Overall in 2008 while appearing in all 13 games (he started versus Penn State), he rushed for 705 yards (tops on USC) on 138 carries (5.1 avg.) with 9 TDs, plus he has 7 receptions for 48 yards (6.9 avg.) and 33 punt returns for 305 yards (9.2 avg.). He had 29 yards on 9 rushes with a 2-yard TD at Virginia, then added 23 yards on 4 carries versus Ohio State and 48 yards on 7 carries at Oregon State. He had 43 yards on 7 rushes, with an amazing 22-yard zigzagging TD run (he also had 19 yards on 3 punt returns), against Oregon. He then had 17 yards on 9 carries with a TD (along with 7 yards on 2 punt returns) versus Arizona State, followed by 112 yards on 11 rushes at Washington State (he also returned 5 punts for 52 yards). He had 184 all-purpose yards at Arizona (83 on 19 rushes with a TD, 88 on 3 punt returns, including a 54-yarder to set up a field goal, and 13 on 3 receptions) and he also made a key block on a blitzing Wildcat on the Trojans' decisive scoring pass play. He added 113 all-purpose yards (40 on 8 rushes with a 1-yard TD, 21 on 2 receptions and 52 on 4 punt returns) against Washington, then ran for 60 yards on 14 carries and had 4 punt returns for 23 yards against California. He ran for a game-high 115 yards on 14 carries with 2 TDs (7 and 3 yards) at Stanford and had 2 punt returns for 1 yard. He had 26 yards on 5 attempts, caught a 9-yard pass and returned 4 punts for 18 yards against Notre Dame, then added 47 yards on 16 carries (with a 2-yard TD) and returned 5 punts for 43 yards at UCLA. I like it a lot seeing as we agree on the first two Cowboys picks.

As for the rest, I think it was solidly done as well. My only real difference is that I considered Gilyard more of a second rounder so I went guard instead in the third round and went WR in the fourth (in hindsight I probably should have gone with a guy more like Antonio Brown since Ford will probably be gone) . Of course, John Jerry is a pretty good guard prospect as well and I would be elated to grab him in the fourth.

Overall, if our draft went like this, I would be beyond pleased as I absolutely love Burnett and Gilyard as players, and I think Jerry and Williams would go a long way towards shoring this team’s O-line up down the road. The later round picks are good as well although I would just personally probably go D-line before CB.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I like that mock

although I keep on hearing that Sanders is going undrafted, but I just don’t see it. He has speed and production. I think he doesn’t make it past the 6th.

Also John Jerry really helped his stock with the senior bowl. Would not be surprised if he was taken with an early third or late second.

Agreed on both counts

except that I think Sanders is more of a 7th round pick because the concerns about him coming out of June Jones’s system will hurt him. And when you consider the only real successful Hawaii receiver was Davonne Bess (who I believe went undrafted), I think the concerns are somewhat warranted (Ashley Lelie is the one that comes to mind) although you still have to love his potential.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Feb 7, 2010 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

And Bess wasn't even as fast or athletic as Sanders

Plus we are talking about a 5th or 6th not a 1st where Lelie was drafted.

I do think Emmanual has a chance to get drafted but most have him as late 7th

round pick so I thought he may slip a bit, we see it happen all the time.
About Gilyard, I think he slips because of his timed speed being slower and most scouts watch the practice more and didn’t have the best week.

Man I Love The Picks

but someone like Al Davis will screw up the picks.

I’m not a Sooner fan but that is a nice pick for us.

IMHO Bradford won’t last till 10.Guillyard won’t last till the 3rd round and since we don’t need a WR I don’t see us takeing him any higher.Weatherspoon too good to drop to Philly.

Jerry will either move up or down if he can find a dance partner.I think his Quincy fiasco has taught him to listen to his staff.

Anyone think we can trade MBIII for value.

Is the Rossum dude we signed as a return man in our plans for next year?

by TCB Orange Dino on Feb 7, 2010 5:00 PM CST reply actions

like the picks i also c the DE's i expect Dallas to draft this year........

There a few things i think i would change but you know we all like to play fantasy GM………..

The 2nd round pick at safety Morgan Burnett i just don’t think the Cowboys will bring another SS since they have Mike and Sensi (although Sensi is a RFA, but he will return next year prob on a tender)

That is y i like the CB/FS prospect of Chris Cook his secret is out and a good showing can propel a late day pick to a first day pick ex. Connor Barwin…….. Bc Ken Hamlin lost a step and besides him we have Allan Ball there is where the depth needs to b targeted plus Cook ability to play corner.

Gilyard i do wish we get that kid what a nice showing for that kid but i think n second round he will get snatch up …. maybe a rough project like Javier Arenas would be available n the late rounds he could be a WR or CB project……But his return game would prob be his ticket on this team.

by lostar2009 on Feb 7, 2010 6:14 PM CST reply actions

WHOA WHOA WHOA

Burnett played FS, he played rover FS which is what Hamlin plays on passing downs, Gilyard will time too slow to get drafted that high, Arenas most likely will be only a return man in the nfl because of his height while Gilyard can be both a WR and a Return man

Morgan Burnett in my opinion could project to either spot.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Feb 7, 2010 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

he can and sum corner......

I look up Burnett scout report and they projected him more of a SS in the NFL than a FS.. That is y i label him as a SS.

If your remember last year a player by the name of Brian Robriske who ran a 4.56 and was scouted as not havin great separation speed was drafted 36 overall by the Browns. So just to say speed will make him fall is not reliable. Pat white went in the second round bc of a great Senior Bowl.

A player can have a mess of bad tape but when they do great when it really counts the senior bowl and the combine players move up on the board………poor performance can make a player move down.

by lostar2009 on Feb 9, 2010 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

Robiske was also a great route runner

and had extremely reliable hands, Gilyard is inconsistent on his routes and he drops an occasional ball, and has a slighter frame than Robiske

here's what i would like to see (but i know it won't happen)

1st round – brandon graham 2nd and 3rd round – best offensive lineman available… after that, BPA

ttrade choice for cromartie and sign matt jones…

brandon graham is a monster, i know we don’t really need another lb, but he’s going to be good…

free will start at LT next year, and brewster will push kosier… cromartie will be CB number 4, but will back up the starters as scandrick will be primarily the slot guy (and cro will take over for newman when he gets injured, and when he retires in a few years)… cro returns punts/kicks…. matt jones solves our 3rd wr “problem,” and he can challenge roy being in the same mold and faster… of course that all depends on the shape matt jones has stayed in (i have a feeling jerry told him to stay clean and stay in shape, and he’ll have a jjob this year)

by CowboysFan4Life on Feb 7, 2010 6:34 PM CST reply actions

lol No to signing Matt Jones

he has been out of football for a year, i do like Graham but I don’t think we invest another 1st rounder on him unless he is the only 1st round rated guy we have left on the board… i do like the trade Cromartie for Choice, which will then allow Stafon Johnson to have a shot to join the team, he is like Choice, he isn’t the strongest or fastest but he finds the hole. Matt Jones is Roy Williams on crack, he only had 1 year that was any good, and he has a drug problem, no thanks.

Brandom Graham is going to be a monster

but the need versus value there is so skewed I don’t think we could do that.

Still isn't 'how you catch a ball'

On the whole though I appreciate the effort, although I think Rolle in the 3rd would be superior to Burnett in the 2nd.

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

by aussie_cowboy on Feb 8, 2010 5:41 AM CST up reply actions

Let me put it this way...

When Georgia Tech beat Florida State in 2008, the best safety on the field was Morgan Burnett. He lead GT in interceptions every year he played, and has great experience in run support considering how bad GT’s linebacking corp. has been the last few years. While Rolle may get more press with his Rhodes Scholarship, even before that he was not considered a high draft pick. I think Rolle can be a good NFL safety, but Burnett can in my opinion be a great NFL safety.

I agree with Cowboyfan

Rolle is a solid player, but is limited to SS and special teams.

Burnett has the “Wow” factor in his game and can play FS or SS.

If he’s still available when Dallas picks in the late 2nd rd, that would be a bargain.

After all they did beat you twice this year and that Romo really made toast of S K Phillips in the first matchup.

Oh God....Trent Williams would be a HORRIBLE pick.....

…I would rather draft Lupati there..Williams needs alot of work at the next level and needs to put on more weight…He woudnt see the field for 2 years barring injury…

He weighs 318 lbs.

Free weighs 313 lbs. Why exactly does Williams have to put on weight? Especially when his strength is his run-blocking.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Iupati most likely won't be there when we pick

I went with what I thought would be available, did you see the 1st round mock up top… Williams is only there for us because of questions if he is a RT or a LT, Williams also has played guard at Oklahoma as well so he would start out as a swing tackle that will be available if there are injuries this year
