Super Bowl XLIV Open Thread
It's Super Bowl time. Saints and Colts mixing it up for the Lombardi Trophy. I'm going NFC and pulling for the Saints. Plus, they have a group of ex-Cowboys over there.
Usually, I just do an open thread. But this year, SB Nation is inviting all NFL football fans to join an open thread at sbnation.com. The link is here. It's a one-click sign-up process for anybody part of an SB Nation blog. Also, click the auto-refresh box just above the comments when you log in.
If you want to hang here and chat, too - no problem. I know our community is close and guys like hanging and arguing with each other. But give the other open thread a try, too; maybe you can hang in both.
Go Saints, but more important, please be an entertaining game!

I think this is going to be a helluva game...
I really don’t hate anyone (besides shocky) on either one of these teams.

he's a backup
not worth hating anymore.
I like Fujita and Shanle – they always gave a good effort in Dallas.

The Snow Storm Here in DC
Will give me a day off from work tomorrow. I’m doing some killer homework for graduate school, and was thinking I couldn’t watch the game.
Now I can do both. Go Colts, although like The Immortal Iron Fist said, it’s hard to despise either team.

This has been an entertaining half.
Payton has some weird calls sometimes. So your 4th and 1 and you call the almost EXACT same play twice?
I don’t get it.

Sean Payton
better HC than OC? Some guys are like that.
Congrats to NO. They are deserving champions. Our Cowboys could trade punches with them, but didn’t get it done.

Yep
They played a helluva game.
And I thought Payton was a really good OC, hence why he got a head coaching job.

Peyton can't throw his O-line under the bus this time
He had perfect protection all night.
by JimmyJohnson on Feb 7, 2010 9:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
give me a break
when he “threw his o-line under the bus” the o-line had just played the worst game of their careers. They admitted it. The announcers knew it, I knew it, you knew it… Peyton got beaten nearly to death. he didn’t “throw them under the bus,” they let him get hit by buses all night long. He called it correctly.
by Joey2zs on Feb 7, 2010 9:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he still could have handled
It better, romo didn’t throw our oline under the bus when it was obvious that was our issue. Whether it was the olines fault or not, the qb is supposed to say “I missed some opportunities, and we will work hard to get it fixed”.

but my point is that Jerry would have had to fire Parcells and promoted Payton to keep him.

Bummed out...
I rooted for the Saints, because I root against anyone (the Colts); who might get eulogized by the media for being greater than any past Cowboy Teams/Players.
But, since the Saints won, now I’m bummed.
With the way the Cowboys manhandled the Giants twice, Two years ago (then lost in the playoffs to them); and the way they manhandled the Saints this year, can somebody give me a rational, logical explaination (besides the obvious: They Lost!); why it isn’t the Cowboys hoisting their Second Vince Lombardi Trophy in 3 years, tonight!
Wonder if anyone on the Dallas team/in the organization, every thought that Shadle & Fujita would be SB Winner Starters, before them?
Wonder if Jerry Jones feels like a Tool (he should, but that’s another story); for leaving Sean Peyton leave town?
Wonder how the S.D. Chargers are feeling about Drew Brees right about now? How’s that Phillip Rivers experiment working out for you?
Just bummed a bit, that’s all…

.......
1) The 3-4 didn’t really suite both of those players. Players go to other teams and win Super Bowls all the time. It wasn’t like the linebackers were the reason that the Saints won.
2) Dallas’s offensive line got exposed by a superior defensive line. It’s not like it was a big suprise, maybe a big suprise that they got dominated but Dallas’s offensive line has had problems against big defensive tackles. And EVEN if that 07 squad gets past the Giants, I think they would have got destroyed AGAIN against a Patriots team because their defense was regularly giving up 30 points to good offenses.
3)What was Jerry Jones supposed to do about Sean Peyton? Fire Bill Parcells and promote Peyton right away?
The Saints just played awesome, coached to win, and are a deserving Super Bowl Champion.
by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Feb 7, 2010 10:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The Bucs beat that Saints team this year aswell
Should they be hoisting the trophy? No, because the Saints and Colts were the best two teams this year despite our victory in week 14.
And the Rivers ‘experiment’ seems to be going pretty well to me. Cant really say that he is holding SD back.
RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.
by aussie_cowboy on Feb 7, 2010 10:41 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
Dallas has been exposed in their last two playoff losses(and to a huge extent, the 44-6 loss) as a team with a slow and old offensive line that can be exposed and beat, and that when you pressure Tony, like any other quarterback, he is less effective. That and we have a CLASSIC “bend but don’t break” defense which will win you a boat load of games, but it IS beatable, especially when you have a weak secondary, which Dallas has had in all three of those losses, though it is is getting better. Meanwhile, if Dallas gets by the Giants in 07, I’m not too sure they beat the Packers and Patriots both to end the season. They probably beat Brett again, but New England simply matches up better with the Cowboys defense then they did against the Giants. And this year, I really do not know if we beat the Saints in the dome again(look how we struggled on the road this year from top to bottom….we were 8-1 at home this year), and if we do, do you think that Tony has the type of game that Brees HAD to have to win the game? Or that Wade/Garrett has the guts to make the playcalls that Williams and Payton made? I don’t think that would be the case
Fujita was a decent to good player with the Chiefs before we got him, and he has been good for the Saints. Like the post above mentioned, both these guys are classic 4-3 linebackers, not 3-4 ones. And don’t kid yourself, ask Saints fans, they could use an upgrade in BOTH positions.
I blame Parcells for this one, for sticking around in a year where he clearly didn’t want to be here. I think more needs to be made into the relationship between both Parcells and Jones, and like Jerry upset Jimmy when he got involved with his draft, I am sure that Bill was mad when Jerry did the same, especially knowing how Bill likes to, as he says, “shop for the groceries”. And the whole decision to bring in Owens, when Bill obviously wanted nothing to do with him, nor did his staff(Haley, etc.). If Parcells retires again, or hangs it up when he should have, Payton would have been the head coach here and there is no doubt in my mind that Romo would be putting up Brees like numbers.
And I still think the Chargers made the right move. Brees, when Rivers was drafted, was simply an average quarterback, and when they let him go, he was looking at major surgery on his shoulder, which was a huge question mark. And it was not like Rivers has really been bad for the Chargers, has he? He has made the transition for them from a dominate running team with Martyball and Tomlinson to a premier passing team with Norv and Rivers.
Dallas will get theirs, don’t worry. We have the talent, we just need to fix up the massive holes on this team which has been plaguing the team for years(offensive line depth and youth and secondary issues), and we will get there.
I'll live and die with number 9....

I agree on the Brees thing
The guy had his shoulder completely rebuilt. The odds of him becoming an elite QB again were a million to 1. Chargers did the right thing. And the Saints won the lottery when Brees came back better than ever.

I wonder what kind of stories of depravity and debauchery will come out of the SB victory party/early Mardi Gras in the French Quarter this week.
Nice end to the season. Good to see Brees get the win and the MVP. He certainly deserved it.

yea i thought it was awful
honestly, one of the less exciting superbowls I can remember from that standpoint. I guess thats what happens when you have the two best qbs in the league this year, the defenses just want to contain them.
The Saints seemed to rarely blitz, the Colts played everyone deep and gave up those 5-8 yard short routes without any concern, it ended up playing a large part in their loss. ALthough to be fair, they have peyton manning, the strategy was probably a good one.
Manning totally choked at the end..that INT was favreesque and he ran a pretty awful 3 minute drill after that I thought, he didn’t take shots down the field and let time burn off the clock and used a TO when it prety much eliminated any chance of his team winning the game w/o an onside kick.
Maybe its cause I had a personal stake in the last 2 superbowls – I wanted the Pats to lose badly in 07 and was rooting heavily for the cards last year, but I found this one to be pretty boring. Time just rolled along with a few interesting coaching decisions, but there seemed to me to be little adjustment through the game in terms of playcalling.

They had no chance to win at that point anyway. Peyton threw it straight to the defender for a pick 6 – and I didn’t see him hustling to try and make a tackle.

Saints DB's playing that way most of the game.
A good offensive coordinator would have seen that and called a fake pump to get them coming and then threw to probably a wide open Wayne. Romo or Favre either one, would have made them pay for jumping routes.

normally yes.
Wayne made the comment that the DB’s were cheating up a little bit the whole game. Whenever the Cowboys opponents did that this year, Garrett and Romo made them pay. That’s all I’m saying. Manning is definitely the best QB in the history of the game but timing routes don’t always work when the other team is looking for them.

Wade Phillips - take notes!
Now I’m pretty happy with the job that Wade has done…..but seeing the stones that Sean Payton had in a big game really underscores wades remaining weakness.
I’m still pissed about the 4th and 1 call against MIN. Wade had a chance to show some balls and give his offense some confidence. Instead, he attempts a long FG with a crappy kicker. It wasn’t even playing the percentages. We had a much better chance of gaining one yard than converting a 47 yd FG in a playoff game.
Wade needs to grow a sack, plain and simple.
