Antrel Rolle is on the market and no one seems to notice

So it's been about 48 hours and the ONLY tam I've heard making a serious play for this guy is Chicago. Can someone please explain to me why in the hell we're all not somewhat J'ing our pants right now? Everyone know Hamlin is a liability right NOW. Rolle would be a substantial upgrade.

Star-divide

I think this would be a GIANT scratch off of our draft room board if we land this guy. he's been in the league SIX YEARS. HE IS IN HIS FRICKIN PRIME and Arizona ran a 3-4 scheme. you don't think this guy wants to go to team with Super Bowl aspirations...um, not Chicago!!!

We really need to come together on this guys. Let's tell everyone we know and spread the word here.

The Cowboys were a “Final 8” team, and thus are severely limited with the free agents they can sign… That’s why the FA chatter is very light at BTB, as it should be.

The Eagles, on the other hand, would make a fine home for Antrel.

I’d hardly say they were “awful.”

Not aweful...

definitly some safety problems though.

But when

they said Bye Dawk they did not think the dropoff would be that big.

by G Fan in England on Mar 1, 2010 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

Disagree. Some Eagles fans talked themselves into that nonsense, but I as well as several others hated that loss.

by JimmyK on Mar 1, 2010 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

I meant

the FO rather than the fans – otherwise why was he let go surely not money when they keep throwing it at McNabb…

by G Fan in England on Mar 1, 2010 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

The FO didn’t want to lose him. They rolled the dice thinking that a team out there wouldn’t overpay for a 35-year-old safety. Denver did, and the Eagles were hurt… badly. But I highly doubt they thought it wouldn’t be a dropoff.

by JimmyK on Mar 1, 2010 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

They(FO) figured with his age, the drop in play could be made up in the athletism of the younger guy taking over.

The thing most cowboys fans think is you under estimated his fiery leadership and locker room presence. He brought it every week and demanded the same of everyone else. He isnt missed in Dallas.

The thing to remember here is that they didn’t cut him – He left as a free agent. The Eagles absolutely wanted him in Philly last year, but not at the hefty price Denver offered. I’ve always said that the Eagles should have franchised him, but they likely didn’t because they didn’t think the market for his services would be as high as the cost of that franchise tag. It was an unwise gamble, and one that they lost. However, I don’t think they were sold on Quintin Demps (Dawkins’ most logical successor at the time they lost him) by any means. If they were convinced Demps was the answer, they wouldn’t have signed Sean Jones.

by JimmyK on Mar 1, 2010 11:42 AM CST up reply actions

He was released with a year left on his contract

They didn’t want to pay him 12 mil, so he can be picked up by anyone, even Minnesota. I would be very suprised if this guy isn’t snapped up by one of the better teams just because of this fact. He’s going to be expensive though, but I think your owner (in an uncapped year no less) can make the deal.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 1, 2010 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

Forgot about the signing of Jones.

Your right though, if someone offers those kind of big bucks their really isnt anything you can do.
I use to want the NFL to institute a rule where players who have been with the same team 8-10 years wouldnt count against the cap. Kind of a homer rule for the fans. Its just not right to see Dawk in anything but Green and Emmitt in anything but the Star.

Without trying to think of the reasons that wouldn’t work, I like that rule a lot.

by JimmyK on Mar 1, 2010 3:36 PM CST up reply actions

Just thought of a bunch of reasons it could never work, but as a fan, I love it.

by JimmyK on Mar 1, 2010 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

Well QBs play too long and they count a great deal against the cap.

It would be too beneficial in cap freedom for a team like Indy. Still long time favorites shouldnt be forced to leave because of cap restriction.

by dc93olson on Mar 1, 2010 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

And Minny said bye, dallas :)

So you finally beat Philly in a meaningful game and got a little bit further in the playoffs. Awesome, good for you. In the process, you made the “Final 8” and are extremely restricted in regard to signing free agents, while we’re not. So, I’m glad we picked this year to finally lose a meaningful game to Dallas. Hooray.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

The more I look at this FA process the more silly it becomes.

So we can only sign 1 big contract. Thats all we sign anyway whether we are bad or good. The cap might go down soon and most teams are playing safe anyway. There isnt much talent out their worth all of that money to sign anyway. I dont like overpriced high end FA anyway. We get burned twice as much as we succeed. The low end FA almost alway offer more int terms of value.

This whole restrictive thing looks like the owners knew what they were doing when they wrote it up.

Really? That stinks, haha. Do you have a link for that info by any chance? It’s not that I don’t believe you – I just want to make myself smarter on the topic.

by JimmyK on Mar 1, 2010 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

Final 8 rule

The third trigger will have the biggest impact. This is the ‘Final 8′ rule; it will extend deeper restrictions for teams that reach the final eight positions in the playoffs.

The final four teams will not be permitted to negotiate or sign any unrestricted free agent to a player contract unless they are cut from their team or originally belonged to the team that is trying to sign (or resign) them.

The bottom four of the final eight have it a little easier. They will be allowed to sign only one player with a salary of $4,925,000 or more and any number of players with a first-year salary of no more than $3,275,000 with an annual increase of no more than 30% in the following year.

There will be an additional mechanism to permit the final eight teams to sign an unrestricted free agent for each of the players they lose to free agency so long as they don’t spend more than the player they lost earns from his new team

by G Fan in England on Mar 1, 2010 8:45 AM CST up reply actions

Also, I hear the same is for RFAs.
Per NFL director of corporate communications Dan Masonson, “If an RFA is not tendered, he’s a free agent, but not a UFA. . . . So Final Eight teams can sign him.”

In this regard, the CBA isn’t crystal clear. As best we can determine, a restricted free agent always is a “restricted free agent,” regardless of whether their teams take advantage of the devices for restricting their movement.

This means that the Colts and the Vikings and the Saints and the Jets and the Ravens and the Cardinals and the Cowboys can pursue Sproles without having to figure out how signing him might or might not fit within the restrictions of the Final Eight Plan.

And for released players...
NFL director of corporate communications Dan Masonson, who has been incredibly helpful to our efforts to understand the nuances of the labor deal, tells us that the final eight teams will be permitted to sign any players who have been released from their contracts, regardless of whether they had to pass through the waiver system before becoming free agents.

[snip]

So if, for example, quarterback Marc Bulger is released by the Rams, one of the final eight teams could sign him. Ditto for Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, and any other player who’ll be dumped from his current deal.

Dawk, question for you

I have a source who knows some of the Eagles FO people who told me a couple
of years ago that Joe Banner, as a policy, did not believe in drafting WRs in the 1st.
That they were a bad investment.

Last year they break policy — spectacularly, I might add — and move up to get Maclin.

Has any story been published in the Philly press about personnel policy changes? Are
they undergoing any process changes since they’ve shuffled their personnel people the
last 12 months?

by Rafael Vela on Mar 1, 2010 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

To be honest, I’m unaware of the Joe Banner comments about not drafting WR’s in the first round, although I don’t doubt he made them. Yes, they drafted Maclin last year, and traded a 6 to move up 2 spots to do so, but it’s not the first time they’ve drafted a WR in the first round. They of course bombed badly in 2001 when they took Freddy Mitchell in the first, they drafted Reggie Brown 35th overall (just outside the first round) in 2005, and Todd Pinkston 36th overall (again, just outside the first) in 2000.

Public knowledge of the hierarchy of the Eagles’ brass is foggy at best, and that’s the way they like it. It was formerly believed that Andy Reid and Tom Heckert were the primary decision-makers on draft picks, and that Banner’s influence on actual talent evaluation was minimal. It’s even more cloudy now with Heckert leaving for Cleveland and the promotion of Howie Roseman to “GM,” whatever that title means.

One thing to always keep in mind with the Eagles is that they’re liars. For example, they say they’re perfectly happy with their WR’s during the 2004 offseason, and then a day later they go out and trade for Terrell Owens. Watch what they do, as opposed to what they say.

There’s really little that’s predictable about the Eagles – Nobody saw them drafting Kevin Kolb 35th overall when McNabb was barely 30 years old. Nobody saw them drafting Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown when they still had Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor playing at a high level. Nobody saw the Michael Vick signing. It’s an extremely difficult team to figure out, even for it’s most diehard fans.

he isn’t an unrestricted FA, he is a street FA, we can sign him for whatever

I get the feeling

that the Cardinals window may have shut for a year or two with the retirement of Warner and therefore they are cutting money off the books by not keeping Dansby and Rolle.

by G Fan in England on Mar 1, 2010 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

Makes good sense.

I think Im just feeling grouchy. Between the Combine, draft, FA, pro days, and released players. Everyones gone crazy chasing dreams. Guys that dont fit your scheme are suddenly great players that would instantly put you in SB contention. Lockerroom cancers are suddenly good people. It feels like Im in Toy-r-us with my 9 and 6 year old two weeks after christmas and them wanting everything. I want to pop them upside the head.
I like to build and develope from the draft and use FA to fill draft misses and holes. I like to give our draft choices a chance to develope within our system and then give them a chance to play.

It's a good post FURIO

Think this year will be a very cautious one FA wise. Between the uncapped year and the pending CBA aggreement it’s a good year to cover your a$$, Rolle has not gone within notice, but few will commit until absolutely needed. Plus it’s the season of the liar. No FO will give you the straight goods on anything .

by oldboysfan on Mar 1, 2010 5:19 PM CST reply actions

They said today Arizona is working on a deal to keep him there....

The Final Eight is not as restrictive as you think….there is ways to still acquire mid level FAs without difficulty. We wouldn’t be signing top tier FA’s anyway….Rolle is a mid level FA if he hit the market.

I would be lying to say I knew how good or bad he is. I know he was a corner coming out

that might get pulled to safety cause of his size. He should have enough man to man skills to add another dimension. I just dont know what his safety instincts are. If he has a hole in his game then he isnt a upgrade.
Isnt 5-6 million Ed Reed money. He isnt that good and he isnt good enough as a CB to make that kind of money or he wouldnt be moving to safety in the 1st place. I dont know why he scares me but he does.

Sounds like the Cards are reworking his deal

Or trying to at least. Which means it would take a blockbuster deal to pull him away. I don’t want the Cowboys shelling out a multi-million $ contract when they can just get a better replacement in the draft. Rolle is not all that. Did people already forget the record amount of yardage the Cards gave up in their playoff games?

to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''

by Becho on Mar 2, 2010 1:26 AM CST up reply actions

What does having 3 first rd picks have to do with anything?

This is NOT a good idea, IMO. Why people think we have to run out and spend a fortune on FA to upgrade an already good team, is beyond me.

we need a good guard, safety, and tackel

if we had 3 first round picks it be easy to fill those needs. since we dont, it be wise to fill one of those needs thru FA

I think his number this season was something crazy like 12 mil

He will go to the highest bidder, dont assume he will be back with Arizona

He’s already been talking about other places he’d like to land. He mentioned Miami first since he’s a Florida kid. But I think he will follow the money.
