Shawn Andrews

Profootballtalk.com has reported that Shawn Andrews was released today. Some of you might remember that when Andrews came out of Arkansas, Jerry was interested, but he went a few spots earlier to Philadelphia. He's been a pro bowler twice, but he's only played in two games in the last two years because of injuries and depression. There is even some speculation that he might not want to play again (Edit- Though Andrews states he wants to play on his twitter account). For an incentive laden contract, it seems like a decent chance to salvage a promising career, just like Dallas did with Columbo. So what are the chances that Jerry offers him a low-risk high reward contract and do you think Jerry should?

From my understanding

He’s been going to tharapy for depression, if the iggles released him, that should tell you something like he’s not progressing like he should or he’s just doen have the desire to play anymore. So no I wouldn’t sign him.

I would be depressed if I lived in Philly

Worst town I’ve ever been to.

I went there for all the “history” and ended up looking at garbage filled streets and fearing for my life.

Hahahaha, you were really “fearing for your life” in Philly? You’re in the military, are you not? If your toughness is indicative of the makeup of our armed forces, we may as well just peacefully hand over our entire country to China right now.

2 Million Dollars

Philly owed Andrews 2 million this year which must have influenced their decision. I doubt any team would have to offer him that much as a base salary.

by Austin15 on Mar 17, 2010 1:02 PM CDT reply actions

I don't like the risk of him deciding football is no longer his thing.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Mar 17, 2010 1:06 PM CDT reply actions

I think

if you’re able to get him for a minimum-ish contract that’s incentive based and has little to no guaranteed, it couldn’t hurt to let him come into camp and show what he can do. The guy is a former All-Pro, after all. But I think some team that’s desperate for some line help (Bills maybe?) is going to throw a decent offer at him.

by Mandmeisterx on Mar 17, 2010 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

I'd certainly talk to him

He was the best guard in football in ’06. When the Eagles whipped Dallas on X-mas day that season he was a monster. But that was a long time ago.

But phone calls are cheap. He may be done but I see no harm in some due diligence.

so long as no bidding war is involved (and this situation seems to be a Dan Snyder max contract waiting to happen), he would be great to take a low-risk flyer on. A proven player, only 27 (relative infant as far as OL), & if motiviated could use the upcoming year to focus solely on rehab, a la Colombo.

The success rates for these reclamation projects is pretty low- for every Colombo, there’s a Demetrius Underwood, Aaron Gibson, John Avery & Ryan Leaf that don’t pan out. But Andrews does come with a NFL pedigree that none of the aforementioned have, and if Jerry doesn’t have to invest enough in him that he can cut his losses before training camp or after the year if he doesnt’t progress, then at the least definitely worth putting out feelers.

That said, smart money is on the usual suspects (Skins & Raiders) setting the market for him way beyond what would be prudent for Jerry.

pick him up...

i see no difference between him, proctor, holland, preston, sign him to the veteran minimum and give him a chance, nothing to lose.

ha haha yeah

could be even better than proctor, he could be good but by the other hand he’s coming from the eagles, i don’t like former eagles in the boys

He used to be the best G in the game...

And with that said, I’m glad the Eagles didn’t even wait until camp to cut him. That should tell you something about this guy.

this may get me shot

but i’d be fine with signing the guy to an incentive laden deal. Living in philly I saw the guy play a lot, and he is Larry Allen incarnate. He’s like Bigg Davis, but with more mobility. If he has beaten the depression we’d have a steal, if not….it’s an uncapped year, so who cares, we cut him.

by stephen1 on Mar 17, 2010 2:22 PM CDT reply actions

I give him a shot with the right contract

When he plays he is one of the best if not the best G in the game period..

by scandrick32 on Mar 17, 2010 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

My biggest problem with him is that if we signed him who would he replace. Kosier is the likely person but I don’t want to pay Kosier to be a backup and I don’t trust Andrews to stay healthy all season.

by jack dein on Mar 17, 2010 2:41 PM CDT reply actions

Who he would replace-

Say Dallas signs Andrews and cuts Kosier. Andrews would still have to compete w/ Brewster and who ever is drafted to start at LG. Signing Andrews might cause Kosier to get cut, but I doubt they would count on him enough to change their drafting scheme.

by Austin15 on Mar 17, 2010 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

It is very unlikely that Brewster is ready to play this season. He didn’t even put on shoulder pads the entire season. Your assuming that we also draft someone to start at LG and that that person and Andrews can replace Kosier. Andrews has played in 2 games over the last 2 years and then putting a rookie in there. If you release Kosier your hoping that Andrews plays all season which is very unlikely.
Just seems like a move that we don’t need to make.

by jack dein on Mar 17, 2010 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Might cut Kosier

While I agree that we don’t know what Brewster has to offer and might not be ready to play like the player we passed on (Loadholt) to select him was last year, we do know that if he gets two Pro Bowl caliber seasons, like Andrews, all would be happy. Andrews is a big question mark, but if you could pay someone with huge upside a similar price to Holland or McQuistan while still developing young players its a no brainer. And I don’t think you have to cut Kosier. You could wait until training camp to see what Andrews has to offer and then cut whichever one you trust less.

by Austin15 on Mar 17, 2010 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Kosier would be a very valuable back up

He played just about every position on the O-Line while with the Lions and Niners. He’s a smart lineman who just happens to lack power. I’d rather have him fill in a spot than Brewster, Proctor or Holland.

So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

by NICK L on Mar 18, 2010 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

who would he replace?

Pat McQuistan and Montrae Holland

by Rafael Vela on Mar 17, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

So if he doesn’t beat out Kosier he sits on the bench and doesn’t prove anything to anyone. Kosier makes $2.99M base salary this year and would be expensive as a backup. If you release Kosier then you hope that Andrews stay healthy all season which is unlikely.

by jack dein on Mar 17, 2010 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Kosier isn't the one we need to replace

Though it will never happen and Jerrah will never admit it, the weak link on our O-line is Bigg Davis. He leads the league in pancake/bulldozer blocks. But he also leads the league in total whiffs and plays taken off.

by JimmyJohnson on Mar 17, 2010 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

If PHI cut him there's a good reason

I don’t think the positives outweigh the negatives anymore. He’d only be a progress stopper for Free, Brewster, and any rookies.

by APerfectStar on Mar 17, 2010 3:13 PM CDT reply actions

I am sure there is discussion at Valley Ranch

and they’ll weigh the consideration with more details than we have and then make a decision whether or not to take a run at him…if they decide to do it, I’m good with it and don’t expect it to work out…it will be a calculated risk. If the decide not to do it, I’m good with that too, and if he ends up in the Pro Bowl with another team that would be okay too. He’ll be a gamble for sure and he could be the jackpot or he could be a bust. Let’s see how it plays out.

by Kansas Cowboy on Mar 17, 2010 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

You can expect that teams will be calling him

But you shouldn’t expect to hear something in the short term…

With Andrews it isn’t just about his problems with depression, it’s also about his back problems. He would have to demonstrate that he’s in physical condition to make it through camp…

My guess is that he’s going to take a year off, ala Colombo, and see if he can make it back in 2011 with someone.

Viva México! Go Cowboys!

with depression its hard to motivate yourself day in and day out

Even with good treatments and that could effect lockerroom chemistry, I say this because I have depresion and when I have slumps I see it rub off on other people. Its hard to overcome I guess it depends on how severe his case is

Don't Panic!!!

Yeah, I personally don't care if he's gay

The depression concerns me. Mental problems generally don’t just heal like a broken leg. I feel badly for guys like Andrews and Alonzo Spellman and Demetrius Underwood. It’s got to be hell when a non-physical injury derails your life like that through no fault of their own.

I wouldn’t mind if the Boys made a phone call, but I’d be very careful about investing serious money in Andrews. I find it hard to believe the Iggles would expose him to the Boys and Skins, if they thought he could be salvaged.
