Brandon Marshall
It doesn't seem likely that a team will give up the kind of draft pick Denver is looking for to get Brandon Marshall. As the draft nears, his value will continue to drop and after the draft, Josh McDaniels may be desperate to unload his disgruntled WR.
Many years ago, the Dallas Cowboys made a big mistake trading two first round picks for Joey Galloway. The Roy Williams trade suggests that the team did not learn its lesson. Although Jerry says he wants to keep waiting it out, what Jerry says and what Jerry does are not always congruent. After all, how much warning did we get leading up to the T.O. release? Don't worry, I'm not suggesting the Cowboys should trade another First for a wide receiver
The Galloway trade was not, however, a complete loss, as the Cowboys relayed Galloway to get Keyshawn Johnson. Johnson, author of the book "Just Throw Me the Damn Ball" and coming off of a half season suspension became a model teammate in Dallas and had some productive seasons until the Boys upgraded the position with T.O.Brandon Marshall might provide another such opportunity. If, after the draft, Denver finds itself stuck with an unhappy player, but with limited options at the position, it may consider a similar player trade. The Johnson-Galloway trade worked out wonderfully for both teams. Maybe Roy's potential, like Galloway's, can inspire the Broncos to take a shot. Remember that Galloway had a good season or two prior to coming to Dallas...just like Roy.
The value may seem disproportionate (and it is). But, such was the case when we swapped Galloway for Johnson. And despite Roy's recent woes, he has been a very productive receiver in this league. If Galloway's injuries and poor production in Dallas didn't scare off Tampa, perhaps another team will take a similar approach.
Moreover, the Cowboys could throw in another player to augment the Roy for Marshall trade. The Broncos are switching to a 3-4 and might lack some of the Personnel. They have signed a few linemen, but could find value in a guy like Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen or Jason Hatcher.
Dallas has done well with troubled receivers in the past and this could help Jerry save face on his Galloway 2.0 trade.
((((T.O, another player with a troubled past came to Dallas and did avoid trouble, for the most part. The added media attention of being a Dallas Cowboy, paired with the stigma he carried with him was much more responsible for his eventual release than anything he did or said as a member of the team. Of course, this is just my opinion and none of us know what exactly took place in the locker room, but it didn't seem that he was being a bad guy here. And if his cameos on "Hard Knocks" were at all indicative of his off-field demeanor, he was a likable teammate who really wanted to win.))))

While improbable,
the thought of Miles Austin and Brandon Marshall on the field at the same time makes me wish it could happen. Those guys? Together? Felix in the backfield? If we put any more explosive players on the field, the whole stadium would come down.
Unless we worry more about the Oline and less about skill position players...
…it is Romo who will be the one going down. Over and over again.
What’s the point of having three guys open when the QB’s on his back?
The problem with that theory is that Marshall is still young and very productive. I’m sure the Broncos would rather deal with him than take Williams. Galloway was ineffective because of injuries Williams has been bad because he’s just not that good.
If Marshall was say 32 and on the downside of his career they might go for it but he’s still getting better.
+1
RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

Risk Reward my good man
Spears and Roy williams is a low risk, but the reward of Marshall playing at the top of his game is great.

he’s Albert Einstein. At least on the football field.

seriously
I’d take a bag of chips for Roy, heck I’d pay someone to take Roy off our hands.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
Could we pay someone to take him?
Or at least, could we subsidize him going somewhere else, so instead of the Cowboys paying him 9.5 million or whatever it is, we pay 1/2 and whoever he plays for pays the other 1/2 (or 2/3 , 1/3)?
That is allowed in Baseball, I am not sure about the NFL
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
I'd give Denver a 6th rounder
To take Roy Williams
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
maybe they'll give us out 5th back?
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
A Colossal Fool . . . and
a criminal unworthy of even being allowed to play in the NFL
Crazy.
The idea that TO was released because of the media is just crazy. If TO was a positive to the team he would still be here no doubt about it. Jerry didn’t let him go and eat millions of dollars because of an article on ESPN.
He was let go because he was a head case who fought with more than one coach while here. In the end our franchise QB also appeared to be real tired of his big mouthed act and wanted him gone. The 2009 season results and play of our QB speak volumes about whether it was the right decision or not.
TO was a posititive to the team for a good two years
If marshall could give us that I would take that.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
Was he? Did it really pay off in the end? I don't see it. Hindsight may be 20-20,
but I don’t think he got the team where it needed to be at all. The last thing the Cowboys need is another divisive influence in the locker room, particularly after they’ve worked so hard to build chemistry.
Where would Romo be without T.O. during those first two years?
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
and where would Miles be?
TO took a leadership role with Hurd and Austin, and it shows crystal clear in Austin’s play – hes practically a TO clone minus a little straight line speed and with better hands.
I don’t think any cowboy fan should have any regrets about TO – without him, Romo is throwing to junk at the wr spot and we probably end up drafting Brady Quinn or some crap like that.
I don't either
I mean, any WR could catch 20 balls a game, hell even that one loser did it back in the day for San Fran….What ever his name was..Terry Owens? something like that
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
Maybe asserting the leadership everyone claimed he lacked over all three
years? The Cowboys didn’t win a playoff game with him on the team, and didn’t even make the playoffs last year when he finally had his meltdown. I just can’t sit around and wax poetic about the guy.
I'm not sure where you read your stuff
but the main reason that the team let T.O. go was because he was too much of a leader and a voice. They wanted Tony to be able to have that role, but it couldn’t happen without him gone. Everyone loved him and followed his advice, especially the young guys. I believe it was Miles that was always talking highly of him, saying that he was always helping him fix his routes, the way he jumps, his timing, everything.
T.O. was great for this team, but it was his time to go as he was starting to open his mouth in a bad way and it started to affect the team.
TO has been a cancer on every team
he’s been on. A tiger’s stripes don’t change. It’s really a shame, because he was one hell of a WR, but he will be remember for be a trouble maker and splitting locker rooms. His #s say he is a HOFer, but I don’t know if he will make it. If I voted for the HOF I wouldn’t put him in. JMO.
Sorry, I should have elaborated. Too much of a leader is the kind
way of saying what I’m saying; TO got in the way of anyone else asserting team leadership, including Romo. The wide receivers clearly liked him, and, from all reports, that helped divide the locker room. It’s funny that, in one interview, Crayton in one breath defended TO, and in the other, enthused about how this year, the ball was spread around more. Hedging his bets? Moreover, not everyone loved TO, and he wasn’t great for the team; if either were true, he’d still be there.
I'm still disagreeing with you..
T.O. got released because he ended up getting in the way. I think he was a diva and he definitely caused some problems, but he also had his good side too. There were several reports about how T.O. was mentoring the younger WRs because he got the same treatment from Jerry Rice when he was in San Fran. I’m not saying that he wasn’t hurting the Cowboys on the field, I’m just saying Miles wouldn’t be the WR he is today without the help of T.O., just like how T.O. wouldn’t have been the WR he was without Jerry Rice.
Then I guess you have to decide if players like TO are worth it.
Mentoring young players and then getting those players to take his side and destroying team unity. Worth it or not, I do NOT see the point of repeating history by bringing in another bad influence.
Show me where he has been a bad influence
Seriously, no one on the team has been affected by him. They did great until injuries started to hurt the team. Find me some evidence of him actually hurting the team. Maybe when he was younger, but in the past two season, find something and I will concede on this point.
Brandon Marshall? I don't care if you concede or not.
I don’t want another pouting headcase on this team. I saw him benched by his coach; I don’t want Wade dealing with more of that crap. If they bring him in, I’ll put up with it, because nothing can turn me against the Cowboys. If he minds his manners, I’ll be the first one cheering and conceding I was wrong. If he doesn’t, I’ll be happy to meet you here to tell you I told you so.
They set a record...
for team offense his 2nd season. T.O.’s numbers his first 2 years were un-fricken-believable. Brandon Marshall is not a head case for a players coach such as Wade or Jason Garrett. I think he would be great here, so damn happy to get out of Denver that he would behave.
"I'm hurt dog, don't ask me if I'm alright. Hell na man. Juaqin said Dominate & we not doin' it. I'm puttin' my Heart into this ####. LET"S GO MAN!"
-The Ed Reed
And yet, in neither year did they win a playoff game. As for behaving because
he gets out of Denver? Every team that tried with TO thought the same thing.
Marshall isn't the same as T.O.
T.O was known for his antics in the locker room, causing fights and generally being a total douche. Marshall has thrown hissy fits, and has done some stupid things, but he isn’t a team killer.
He may be a little selfish, but at this point, with that team and head coach, I would be too. The coach already ran off their franchise QB, sat Marshall for long periods of time and is trying to sign Marshall to a cheap contract which isn’t what the guy deserves. He’s been a beast for the team and he should get paid for it and I think he has every right to be the way he has been with that coach.
Football is the ultimate team sport IMO.
If you’re not a team player then I don’t want you on my team. I think Marshall has shown he isn’t a team player. Let him poison some other team, not the Cowboys.
Talk about selective amnesia!
The dude has been suspended multiple times for breaking team rules, suspended for breaking NFL rules, has been charged multiple times for domestic violence, and has recently admitted that he was an instigator during the altercation that got Darrent Williams killed.
Talented? No doubt.
But a choir boy, he ain’t. It’s not just about the money.
He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors. - Thomas Jefferson
I never said choir boy..
I just think he is young, immature and needs to do a lot of growing up. We’ve had a lot of immature guys come to the Cowboys and straighten up. Or well, at least not do something incredibly stupid while here. Marty B may be immature, but he hasn’t gotten into any real trouble here. I’m not even going to try to talk about Pacman though.. that guy was a nut case.
However, I think Marshall has gotten smarter and has matured over his years in the NFL. His stupid shit came from his younger days and just this past year, I believe a lot of the stuff that is happening with him and his emotions is due to the whole money issue. He still needs to grow up some more, but I believe he has got most of himself under control. I could be wrong, but I think if he gets the kind of money he deserves then he will calm down and be a really good player. And a team player at that.
He beat his wife.
That’s not young, immature behavior. That’s a freakin’ thug!
He’s been in jail twice…including as recently as last offseason.
You could be wrong? You are wrong.
Look, I’m not Terry when it comes to this squeaky clean crap, but this guy is moral napalm.
He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors. - Thomas Jefferson
Marshall is a POS
He does not belong in the NFL, let alone wearing the Star
Two different things
T.O. as a mentor to the young WRs was invaluable to the team.. T.O. as a player is a different story. He was a great athlete, but he had too big of an ego and a huge mouth. I think as his time in Dallas progressed, he got worse, but I think T.O. did a lot for the team in helping to develop Romo and the young WRs.
You think he developed Romo? That's funny, because all I've
heard on this board is that Romo regressed last year. TO’s third and last year with the team.
Developing something isn't finishing.. it is helping it start.
Romo wouldn’t be as good as he is without T.O. The last year of him being here, he caused problems for Romo, but if T.O. wasn’t there in his first couple of years as a starter, he may not be the star that he is now.
And you know this how? You saw TO coaching him? Has
Romo (or for that matter, TO) said anything giving TO credit for making him a good QB? All I saw was a whole lot of chirping about wanting the ball all the time. It nearly made Romo a head case.
On his last year it almost broke Romo,
but that is why they got rid of him, coupled with the fact that they wanted Romo to take charge of the team, without question. T.O. was a great WR fro Dallas before the third year.
So because the Dallas Cowboys didn't win a playoff game
It’s TO’s fault? Who else did Romo have to throw to at the time? Witten? I love the guy to death but i’ve never heard of a TE taking a team places. Do you think we go 13-3 without him…in those playoff losses, i never heard TO’s name come up at all as the reason, I heard romo…I heard crayton, hell I even heard Austin….never romo
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
never TO*
I was ranting too much
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
Uh, that's not my point. My point is that he did not put the Cowboys over
the top. Sing his praises all you want, but, in the end, he wasn’t a difference maker, and he hurt the team.
My point wasn't that
Jerry cut TO because of media pressure, but rather that media pressure made TO a problem. Members of the media repeatedly asked TO questions where he either had to say that his own skills were declining or blame someone else. 90% of the receivers in this game would have fallen into that trap; unfortunately, TO’s past made it more likely that the trap would be set. You think DeSean Jackson would ever say “I’m too small to go over the middle and make first down catches”?
NO. He’d say he could score on any play if someone could throw it far enough.
The Cowboys always have to deal with added media scrutiny. How unfair was it going into last season’s Eagles game that members of the media asked Wade if he’d be fired? That doesn’t happen on other winning teams.
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
With you Luke
There is no way we need him in town. He is another ME player not a team player.

I go back and forth on Brandon Marshall
but I think I would certainly take him for the right price (RW and a 2011 2nd round pick sounds good to me). If you put him next to Miles Austin and make sure to upgrade the O-line in this draft, you could potentially be talking about an offense built to dominate for the next five years or longer (assuming those O-line measures take hold in a year or two).
I know a lot will say that he is a me-first guy and that that should preclude taking a risk on his talent, but I think he is certainly a different beast than TO. He doesn’t have the media hold that TO did (as far as creating a circus) and he is nowhere near as vocal as TO. I hated watching his practice tantrum, but at the end of the day his talent makes him worth putting up with immature stuff like that. He may not be the best citizen ever, but the fact is that the guy simply produces at a very high level and if Jerry paid him I think you would see a different guy than in Denver.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
this would be dynamite but i think that we would have to sign him to a very short contract
2 to 3 years, 7 to 10 mil. a year. lets be honest he will demand that much and it be smart for us to give it to him for that time period. Getting paid would make him marginally happy and we would have a good chance at getting a decent compensatory pick for him.
Regarding BM:
How many of y’all have raised some hell regarding your pay? Don’t just sit there and take it….. get after it! I would do the same thing in the military. I think his ‘problem’ would be fixed….there is nothing worse than being screwed out of your ‘dues’.
FEAR the STAR.

It's not just about pay with Marshall.
He is a fool.
Here’s an interesting comparison…
This is Miles Austin’s wikipage;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Austin
This is Brandon marshall’s wikipage;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Marshall
Notice how Marshall’s has a whole section devoted to him that Miles does not. The heading is called "Legal Trouble".
Here’s a few other words that don’t appear in Miles’ page but do in Marshall’s; suspension, a fine of two combined game checks, probation, community service, assault of a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, domestic violence, anger management counseling, driving under the influence, trail, plea bargain and bond.
He was also heavily involved in a nightclub incident that ended with his teammate being murdered with a gun.
Obviously all these things didn’t happen to Marshall because he was unhappy with his pay.
Has anyone ever responded to themselves four times in a row on this blog?
…And in italics too no less. Well they have now.
This is too funny!
Not sure how this will come out, but the entire right side of my page is in Italics, and only that on this specific fanpost… so strange!
Crikey Masada, you're right!!!
It’s happening on mine too. What have I done?
Last time I tried to format something here I created a dimensional tear that had dunkman walking into (and through!) walls. This time I’ve created some sort of tumbling, contagious italic effect that has literally and certifiably affected the entire Fanpost (and most probably the universe, again).
I'm sitting here...
…literally petrified to open the book sitting in front of me.
What if I open it and it’s in italics?
Yep, there is italics in this book.
What does this mean?
Well it’s obvious that this is two dimensional manifestation of a forth dimensional problem (the italics in my book prove that this ‘thing’ has mastered time and space). I don’t wish to alarm anyone but this could possibly lead to superstrings of the tenth dimension but I have no evidence of that… yet.
You might think we need someone with IT experience to solve this problem but you’d be wrong.
We need an exorcist.
Nice Job Luke!
Trying to fix it..
Anyways, I believe this is a good idea and Jerry needs to make it happen. I think this and a trade for Baltimore’s left tackle would make me very happy. Very very happy.
ain't worth it
we finally have good chemistry in the locker room so why take a chance of ruining it by getting another diva WR.
we don’t need TO lite
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"
isn't Roy a bit of a diva himself
we wouldn’t be adding a diva so much as replacing one diva with another.
“I’m still the number 1…”
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
not even close
RW is a solid team player like most who came out of Odessa-Permian. His occasional “I’m still the number one receiver” I took as more a way to keep his confidence up than a locker room dividing “give me the damn ball”.
You want diva? sign Marshall and listen to the whines when Miles or Witten gets more touches.
We’re too close to being really good to take a chance on that way talented but way too big a mouth WR.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"
Roy said at about halfway in the season
that he wanted the ball more, even when we knew he wasn’t catching the ball. If you look around mid-season, that was when Romo was struggling, and it was because he kept on trying to connect with Roy. I wonder why. He whined just like T.O. did, but at least T.O. would catch it more than half of the time…
Later on in the season they stopped throwing to Roy and guess what happened… Romo took off and Austin blew up. Roy is a diva and a slacker. I will be SOOO excited when he is off the team.
RW a slacker and diva? joke right?
TO has destroyed the chemistry on 3 teams; RW hasn’t; Does RW run poor routes? yes; is he a #1 wr? no; diva and slacker; hell no.
Why do you think Denver has been shopping Marshall since last summer? He’s been arrested multiple times, he’s been suspended and benched; you want slacker? check out his practice habits from last year’s camp which led to his suspension.
He’s talented but a major pain in the butt. We don’t need this yahoo.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"
Roy got plantar fasciitis his first year here
which is usually a sign of a guy not conditioning enough or not training enough. Romo and Roy have been working on connecting together since Romo got better after his pinkie injury and they STILL can’t get anything together. And I’m 100% positive people don’t blame Romo for that. Roy cried for the ball last year and the team suffered for it.
Marshall’s suspension at last year’s training camp was because he was pissed about the money thing. WRs have been getting paid for doing a LOT less than he has, example Roy Williams, and then they tried to stiff him with a crap contract. Say what you want, but I’d be ecstatic if Marshall came to the Cowboys.
He refused to practice.
He was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team”.
He’s been arrested no less than 4 times in his 4 years in the pros. He just admitted that he was the instigator that ultimately caused the death of Darrent Williams. He beat his wife. Cops were called to his house 11 times since he arrived in Denver. Read the Wikipedia entry on him.
Dude is just bad news. He makes Pacman look good.
Denver didn’t stiff him. He was on his rookie deal. Who gives a rat’s behind if he ‘thinks’ he’s worth more? Does that somehow justify his behavior?
He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors. - Thomas Jefferson
You're leaving out important parts from quotes, dude.
They said he was called 11 times, but some didn’t involve him. I read through the whole thing, and I really don’t think he’s scum. He may not be the best person ever, but his arrests and what not aren’t THAT serious, although I would suggest that he divorces his wife and stays single or something. Obviously something isn’t working there. But I believe the kid can change and will have a great career wherever he goes, which I hope is Dallas.
Plus, take a look at Pacman’s wikipedia too the guy paid $15k to everyone who saw him at the Las Vegas shooting, which leads me to believe that he could have very easily shot someone. He got in domestic violence disputes numerous times, drunk driving, marijuana, cocaine, vandalism and on… Wrong guy to pick for comparisons.
I think we should agree to disagree. I believe his talent is too much to pass up because of something that I believe isn’t a huge deal and can be corrected easily, while you believe it isn’t worth it. Well, you and Fernie, I guess. :)
you're reaching
risk factors for plantar fasciitis are things like flat feet and high arches, obesity, running and having a tight achilles tendon. Saying RW is a slacker because of this condition is absurd. give it up
You want marshall because of his talent; I don’t because he’s a malcontent with a criminal background.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"

You can copy and paste the URL into your address box. It is an SI article
from 2009. One key quote:
Yes, indeed, this is another fine mess the Broncos and McDaniels find themselves in as Jay Cutler and the Bears prepare to come to town Sunday night, but I have a hard time assessing any blame in Denver’s direction this time. If you saw the video from Denver’s practice session on Wednesday, you saw the Broncos fourth-year receiver basically begging to be suspended for insubordination.
He walked as the rest of his teammates ran in pre-practice warm-ups. He booted the football skyward instead of handing it back to the team’s ball boys. He knocked down passes instead of catching them in receiver drills. It’s a wonder the team’s management had time to act before Marshall’s teammates decided enough was enough and meted out their own form of discipline or at least condemnation.
But in truth, I’m told Marshall’s teammates have largely tuned him and his malcontent act out at this point. He has become something like white noise —noticeable in the background, but able to be ignored and worked around.
The more he operates out of the diva receiver’s handbook for drawing attention to one’s self — complain about your contract, demand a trade, stay away from practice, go into full-blown petulant mode — the more he seems to be losing the very value that made him think he could orchestrate his way out of town in the first place.
He’d make an awesome addition to the Cowboys.

Agreed
Getting Gaither and Marshall would be a dream. Use the 2nd on a safety, and the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th on an LB, a CB who can return punts an O-Lineman, and a D-lineman (not respectively, but wherever the best value may be at each pick)
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
agreed with Static, that is
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
Nice thought, bad premise
You omitted the money.
Roy is guaranteed $12.5 Million and that albatross would be transferred in a trade.
No chance this is realistic.
He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors. - Thomas Jefferson
Didn't both players restructure their contracts
in the Galloway-Johnson trade?
Of course this isn’t a perfect comparison given the age of the receivers involved, but surely Roy can’t think he deserves what he’s set to be paid.
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
No...
but both did sign extensions once traded.
Deserve or not, it’s guaranteed. Even if he doesn’t play a down this season, he’s going to get the money. No rational person would forego a payday like that, even for the “good of the team”.
For better or worse, RW is our receiver this year. The only incentive I see is that RW knows it will be his last big payday if he doesn’t perform. Kind of like a contract year.
He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors. - Thomas Jefferson
Here's How it Went Down
1. Before the trade, both players were making around 6 million, and the teams both needed their target player to restructure in order for the trade to work ()
2. Dallas agrees to a 5 year, $20 Million contract (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1749826). This was a 33% pay cut for Keyshawn.
3. Bucs offer Galloway $1 Million in base salary and a $250,000 bonus. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1749826). Galloway didn’t like the offer and it appeared that the trade would not succeed, or that Dallas would have to trade a draft pick if it wanted to trade for Keyshawn.
4. Galloway agreed to a 1-year contract worth between $2 and 2.6 million depending on bonuses. (http://www.thejollyroger.com/log/2004/main0403.htm).
The overpaid receivers took pay cuts. Marshall isn’t overpaid (probably underpaid) so wouldn’t have to restructure. Just like the restructure was an obstacle to the Galloway-Johnson trade, we would probably need Roy to restructure his contract for a trade to happen. This isn’t unheard of. In fact, the Galloway situation is probably pretty analogous. $6.36 Mill in 04 is probably not dissimilar to Roy’s contract today. Maybe Roy would be willing to drop down to 6 Million for a fresh start and an opportunity to prove that he’s not as bad of a player as he’s been with the Boys. I know it doesn’t seem rational to forgo a legal entitlement to money, but as Shawn Andrews says “money isn’t everything.” If you’re Roy Williams, one of the jokes of the NFL, wouldn’t you think that being traded for one of the league’s elite receivers is an ego boost? Something that reaffirms your status as a top-tier player? Roy knows he’s not the #1 here (even if he won’t say it). In Denver he could be…(Roy and Royal-seems like destiny)
So Keyshawn probably signed an extension, but it was a restructure and he took a significant pay cut.
Galloway signed a one year deal with the Bucs and took a 66% pay cut, I don’t see what could have been “extended” in that instance.
Before the draft, this trade is obviously impossible as Denver would like to hold out for a good draft pick. After the draft, however, if Marshall continues to complain about his situation, it’s not at all unrealistic that McDaniels pulls the trigger.
And you’ve got to love the prospect of Miles Austin, Marshall, Jason Witten, Felix Jones on the field at the same time. It’s worth waiting for some numbers to change around.
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
Sorry, forgot to cite number 1
Galloway was set to make 6.31 million, dropped to 2-2.6 depending on bonus (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1749826)
Keyshawn was still in his 6 year 52 million dollar contract with the bust prior to the trade, and agreed to take a big pay cut. His contract with the bucs was the highest WR contract at the time (http://www.spiritus-temporis.com/keyshawn-johnson/)
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
All points moot
though nice research.
None of the contracts were guaranteed.
Here’s the scenario. You just got your dream job and are guaranteed to make a bunch of cash. You underperform, but believe you can do better. You’re asked to take a significant pay cut (in your scenario >50%) so that you can get traded to a non-competitive firm?
Really? You would?
Not trying to be glib, but there is no way (none, nada, zip) that RW is going to restructure his deal, unless it means that he can stay on the ‘Boys. And even then, I don’t know that he’d be open to a significant drop.
Look, I wouldn’t give a NICKeL (pun intended…I’ve been dying to say that) for RW. But I am resigned that he will be on our roster for ’10.

I think you're right
But I just hope so much that you’re wrong.

I don't know why Denver would take RW
at any price. It’s hard to digest, but RW is in Dallas until they cut him IMO.
what if you add in Spears?
They’re moving to a 3-4 and are overhauling their D-line.
Roy is at least as good as Eddie Royal. And after that, the Broncos have Brandon Lloyd, a wide receiver who cannot catch a pass unless he’s facing the QB (…that’s like a QB who can only hand off and toss), Brandon Stokely (a good 3rd receiver…5 years ago), and Jabar Gaffney (not a starter)
So pardon my disposition; why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?
I don't think RW will take any less money.
Jerry owes him $9M if he plays or not. Why would he take less? I don’t think he’s a fool.
Just say no
Marshall is a Turd. The Cowboys don’t need him, Romo just set the new franchise record for yardage, it’s not like the WR position was holding this team back. Jerry just purged the locker room of problem players. He sure as hell isn’t going to bring in this guy. Not to mention the fact that the Cowboys already have money tied up in Roy, and are soon going to have to re-sign Austin to a big contract.
Marshall to the Cowboys makes no sense any way you look at it.

God I love italics
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Where are my italics?

Oh wow...
Now of course they are in italics. They weren’t when I posted them.

Option B: Trade Marshall (& pick 27) to Sea for pick #14
As has been suggested by ProFootballTalk, Seattle is interested in Marshall. So much so they’re willing to give up a 1st round pick (#14) to Denver and the fat, long-term contract Marshall is looking for.
But Denver doesn’t want to settle for pick #14. They want Seattle’s original 1st round pick (#6), to which they’re entitled if the Hawks were to sign Marshall to an offer sheet.
So, Seattle and Marshall come to terms on a contract, and have the ‘Boys sign Marshall to an offer sheet based on said terms. Assuming Denver doesn’t match and keep Marshall for themselves, all the Ponies would be entitled to is pick #27.
Dallas then sends Marshall to Seattle for pick #14. It’s win, win (unless you’re a Broncos fan). Seattle gets their guy for pick #14, and the Boys flip pick #27 for pick #14 simply for facilitating the transaction.
The only question is; Would Jerrah be willing to ef over a fellow owner with this kind of end around move?
I don't mean to sound facetious
And as amazing as that would be, if they wouldn’t accept a 14 why would they accept a 27
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
I never heard that Denver was offered a #1 from anyone for Marshall.
I really think Denver would have jumped all over that trade if offered.
ProFootballTalk was where I read the Hawks had offered #14
(which was Denver’s first round pick they gave up in trade last year)
Instead of entertaining the trade offer they told Seattle to sign him to an offer sheet (which would have entitled them to the Hawks original 1st round pick, #6). Check out the link I included in my initial post in this thread.
Marshall is a RFA and was tendered at the first round level.
If any team signs him to an offer sheet, Denver has the choice of either matching the contract offer or taking that team’s original 1st round pick as compensation for losing their RFA.
The kid may have problems
But let Michael or Deion talk to him, get his head on straight. He may love the cowboys, I believe his biggest problem is that, well…the kid wants his money. He’s earned it. Jerry has it. He’s too good to just brush the idea completely away.

It's not about the money (well, not just)
The kid is a thug. See above comments.

I agree regarding the money
I am hoping that JJ can somehow rework RW’s contract and make it more incentive based. I actually get the sense that RW might consider it as a sign of his confidence in his abilities. In fact, make it such that if he meets some lofty incentives he can make more than he does now.
If his contract were more in line with a #2 WR, I think we’d be much happier with his play…and he’d become better trade bait. Though, I imagine that part of any restructure would be a no trade clause…his agent would demand that to ensure its not just a ploy to be able to move him.
I know there’s no logical, business reason for RW to redo his contract, but I have to believe that the Joneses have at least poked around on that. If they draft a WR high, RW could be facing the option of being released and facing a much, much lower contract or he could renegotiate to a lower contract than he has now, but better than he could get in the open market after being released…and he gets to stay in Texas.
no more diva wrs
regardless of his talent we shouldn’t risk getting another locker room distraction. We are very close to greatest with this team; let’s not blow it by getting another diva wr.
"What we've got here is failure to communicate"
Let's pretend he's a choir boy
I’ll suspend my utter disdain for Marshall as a human being. Personally, I think he should be in jail. But let’s suspend reality. Let’s say there’s no issue of character, team cancer, etc. Let’s pretend he hasn’t been suspended twice by the NFL (3rd time’s a mandatory year).
It’s still a no deal.
Roy’s getting $12.5 Million. Denver’s getting a #1. Marshall’s asking for $9+ Million.
That’s over $21 Million dollars and our 1st Round Pick to trade Roy Williams for Brandon Marshall.

Well since the Joneses seem to have no interest in resigning Miles...
…the Cowboys just might need to pick up Marshall.
The NFC East has won 11 Super Bowls; oddly none of those have come courtesy of the Eagles.
As much as I hate to say it....
Because I really like Marshall’s ability, and performance so far…. He is another Pacman Jones waiting to happen…. He has the brain of a 12 year old, and he’s not going to be able to keep his off the field problems from interfering with his NFL career. He is not capable of learning how to control himself, and the boy is going to end up getting suspended from the NFL for a full season or more before his career is over. Do you really want to roll the dice on that?
No Reason To Pick Up T.O. Jr.
He has all the talent in the world but is a complete head case. He’s a disruptive force in the locker room. If there’s one thing Jerry’s done well in the last year, it’s create a good environment for hard-working players. This guy would destroy that.
Greetings from the Humungus, the Ruler of the Wasteland, the Ayatollah of Rock and Roll-A. I laugh at your puny plans.
