HutHut's Team Needs and Draft Predictions
I'm at home sick today with a sinus infection so I figured I'd do a little draft work. So here goes:
The Cowboys' needs are not glaring this year. This year it's a case of wants moreso than needs. For this reason, I think the possibility of a trade down is higher than usual.
The two positions of greatest need are not positions that usually draft very high... P/K returner and Kicker. Since Jerry hasn't yet turned into Al Davis (thank GOD!) I don't see us drafting either of those positions early.
I reviewed the top 32 players from CBS, ESPN, and Draft Countdown. I compared the players at 24 through 30, 3 prior to our slot and 3 after.
Of those three rankings, 4 players showed up in two of the three lists.
Maurkice Pouncey - C
Jared Odrick - DT
Golden Tate - WR
Carlos Dunlap - DE
The highest rated player on the lists was Taylor Mays at 13 (avg. ranking 18)
What I take from this is that if Taylor Mays is available we'll take him. If not we'll entertain trades. If forced to take a player at this slot I would recommend Pouncey as he could step in for Kosier midseason or Odrick as he is a high motor guy and might provide a breather for the Rat now and then.
But with these players available there is no real benefit to selecting in this part of the draft so i expect a trade as the most likely scenario.

In your scenario
I would take Pouncey and feel good about it.
“Top rated Center prospect in 10 years”
“Rare C worthy of a 1st Round Selection”
High praise from around the Draft Pros
Why NOT take the best position prospect in a decade in the low first?
His position is a low priority according to draft gurus?
So what?
Best at an important position should damn sure be worth a pick.
God I hope we dont even consider Taylor Mays
Honestly, I would struggle selecting him with our second pick at #59.
For what it's worth ... Odrick probably wouldnt play Ratliff's position
Most draft experts are saying Odrick is the best looking 3-4 DE in this draft. I would love to trade Spears for anything (a high third rounder would do) and then select Odrick at #27. He wont make it much past that spot with two 3-4 teams (Jets, Chargers) picking right after Dallas. He’s also a possibility to go at #25 to Baltimore.
Chargers HAVE to take a NT
Dan Williams is my bet there.
"Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can't play football worth a damn."
- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
They also need a RB.
If Dan Williams is gone, I bet they take Ryan Matthews if he’s around.
Anything said above is purely the opinion of AFB unless said otherwise.

Originally Ratliff didn't play Ratliff's position
Since we need a backup NT, and what I read of Odrick’s motor reminds me of Ratliff, I listed him as a player that could potentially give Rat a breather now and then. He could also do the same for either DE in our scheme.
