LSU WR Brandon LaFell and Idaho G Mike Iupati to visit Valley Ranch. LaFell, a Cowboys fan from Houston, will visit on March 31.

"The Oilers weren't that good," LaFell said. "Growing up the Oilers moved, so I had to root for the Cowboys because they were always winning. It would be a dream of mine to play for them because I know I can help those guys."

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and wide receivers coach Ray Sherman has spent some time with LaFell at the combine.

Iupati will make the rounds with many teams, reports the DMN.

Idaho guard Mike Iupati is expected to visit the Dallas Cowboys before the 2010 NFL Draft, according to Scout.com. The Falcons, Chiefs, Dolphins Vikings, Steelers, Chargers and Buccaneers are the other teams he plans on visiting.

Those comments about the oilers from that kid made me laugh,

the texans could only hope to be the oilers reincarnated, they are a poor man’s oilers, the kings of mediocrity.

And yet they still beat us on their very 1st game ever.

They are an expansion team that’s only been around for a short amount of time. We were pretty awful when we first entered the league too.

Lafell may not last till #59.

Would the Boys consider him in the 1st? That would be a bit of a reach by most draft sites. He is considered a mid 2nd round , but if Dallas could pull off a trade out or the 1st and pick up another earlier 2nd round pick around 35 to 40 he would be good a value and cheaper to sign.

by DIRE WOLF on Mar 23, 2010 11:36 AM CDT reply actions

look at all the names and start slotting them appropriately

Iuputi is a guy for 27.
Lafell probably falls between 27 and 59 but if they move down and get extra picks, he’s a definite early 2nd prospect.

by Rafael Vela on Mar 23, 2010 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

With so many quality 2nd tier players thought to be in this draft

I’m sure not against trading back for some extra picks. I think some good players in the 2nd and 3rd and even later rounds are there to be had. This seems to be a year that Dallas can really improve the bottom of roster with rookies and get one or two players that can make an impack next year.

by DIRE WOLF on Mar 23, 2010 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

and while it's not likely, look at the 2nd round WRs

It’s possible that Dez Bryant is the only WR to go in the 1st,
Then, the floodgates open, and it’s a favorites market. If other similarly rated WRs start going, it’s possible he’s there at 59.

Bleh

LaFell is too slow. Sort of reminds me of Dwayne Jarrett when he came out. I’ll pass.

by DoomsdayD75 on Mar 23, 2010 11:57 AM CDT reply actions

He's a much better prospect than Jarrett

who was a product of the USC system.

*rolls eyes*

Because LSU hasn’t been loaded with top 10 recruiting classes.

I don't know what recruiting has has to do with it

LSU doesn’t have a system like USC who makes their WRs look better than what they really are.

by Terry on Mar 23, 2010 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Recruiting has everything to do with it.

It’s not a scheme thing as to why Jarrett was so good, it was the fact that he was surrounded by tons of talent.

There have only been two big WR USC busts and that’s Mike Williams and Jarrett.

If it’s a scheme thing, then why have Jarrett, Mike Williams, and Jarrett been the only three WR’s taken out of the Pete Carroll era since he’s been there in the first two rounds?

The two that have busted have busted for the same reason as any other WR, not because they went to USC and was part of a system.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Mar 23, 2010 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

The only good receiver to come out of USC ln the Pete Carroll era was Steve Smith and thats it. I think it was definitely his scheme that made his players look good.

You disagree

based on nothing but arrogance.

There wasn’t anything overall crazy about his scheme. It wasn’t like it was the scheme that made players.

we'll see what the USC program does without Carroll

I’m willing to bet they fall off some. I think it was his scheme, very underrated IMO.

Tell me expert...

what is special about the “scheme” that Pete Carroll ran at USC?

Haha...

so maybe possibly instead of “scheme” his guys are just really well coached?

Just giving the automated Terry response.

Pete Carroll’s coaching is just that good; probably why he traded a 3rd-rounder for a guy who’s NO Billy Volek.

by MadMick on Mar 24, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I figured...

the funny thing about it is that Pete Carroll didn’t even run the offense at USC.

Norm Chow ran it from 01-04 and then Lane Kiffen took over in 2005.

If it was all the scheme, why has there only been one 1000 yard receiver since Jarrett and Smith left in 2006?

Anything said above is purely the opinion of AFB unless said otherwise.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Mar 24, 2010 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree here

JArrett and Williams had the physical tools to dominate college and thats why they did. They were too slow for pros.

I do attribute their success to great college QBs, but they contriuted size and strength.

Unfortunately they’d make better TEs as pros

by AustonianAggie on Mar 23, 2010 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep...

the same reason that alot of WR’s bust. They don’t have the tools to seperate.

There isn’t anything about the scheme that made them special, they were legitimately talented COLLEGE WR’s that didn’t translate to the next level.

It has nothing to do with the scheme.

Anything said above is purely the opinion of AFB unless said otherwise.

I'll pass on Lafell

Not impressed at all.

Let the chips fall where they may

by sublimezg on Mar 23, 2010 1:15 PM CDT reply actions

LaFell

Drops too many passes.

to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''

by APerfectStar on Mar 23, 2010 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

Yep...

He is a big SOB though, and I do wonder if he dropped alot of pass’s due to inconsistent QB play.

Anything said above is purely the opinion of AFB unless said otherwise.

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Mar 23, 2010 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Bingo Fist, my little bro lives in BR and I see at least one lsu game a yr.

The last 2 yrs have seen the tiggers shuffling qbs in and out, which hasnt helped Lafell’s consistency at all. His upside would be that he’s good at getting in between the ball and the cb(because of his bulk), but I worry about his speed(or lack thereof) and his, at times, cement-like hands.
I’m thinking unless he falls to rd. 6 or 7, the Boys should pass. We already have the worlds greatest WR blocker.

by TheTwoCents on Mar 23, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

not a big LaFell fan

despite his physical tools, he was hardly a dominant player at LSU. In the NFL, those physical traits get mitigated when he finds himself lined up across a DB with the athletic ability to offset his size, and probably much faster to boot, since LaFell is no burner.

Coupled with dodgy hands, I’m not quite sure what LaFell brings to the table that RW currently doesn’t- and if RW can get his head figured out, there is no comparison between the two. Factoring in that LaFell is probably not going to offer much as far as special teams, I hope this visit is strictly a smokescreen or a contingency in the event LaFell falls below round 3.

by NinoP on Mar 23, 2010 5:11 PM CDT reply actions

Seanrude uses the wrong standard

Of course he’s not the blocker Roy W is… But neither were Larry Allen or Anthony Munoz. Let’s be realistic. We won’t find a blocker of Roy’s caliber in this or any draft. Let’s evaluate these players on their merits, and leave the impossible comparisons out of it.
