The Dream Situation

The other day I was driving home and I heard ESPN reporting how Cleveland coach Mike Holmgren was intrested in Colt McCoy. Taking into consideration the recent draft history between the Cowboys and the Browns, it occurred to me that my own personal dream situation could present it self draft day.  A trade down coupled with an extra first round pick next year. I do not know why but I have always loved having that first round pick to give me a team to route against. This got me thinking, what would be our dream scenarios. Poll includes what I think is plausible.

Anthony Davis won’t be there at 27, he’ll probably be gone somewhere in the top 15. If we trade back with Cleveland they probably won’t have to give us their 1st next year. Their 2nd and 3rd plus a 3rd next year would be more than enough.

The more I hear about Campbell the less I like him. Seems like another combine guy who isn’t that good on the field. Iupati should be a good player but I think there are guards that we could get later in the draft that will be just as good. To get Pouncey we may have to take him at 27. His stock is going up quickly and he probably won’t make it out of the 1st round.

I like Thomas but this draft has plenty of good free safeties so why give up some of our few picks to get.

That's debatable

to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''

by APerfectStar on Mar 27, 2010 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

well he clearly has the best ball skills

and that fits dallas’ need. but he can be criticized regarding tackling. i think the deal i proposed is actually pretty sweet, I am surprised that choice is not leading the way. we do not have to many open roster spots, we need quality much more than quantity.

by Becho on Mar 28, 2010 3:27 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah I see the trade with cleveland more likely going that way as well but...

I only wanted to include one trade that did not include future picks and thought I’d go with the Tampa one that Raf had proposed since I liked it more.

by Becho on Mar 26, 2010 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I like the Tampa Bay trade. It gives us 2 picks close together that would allow us to take a safety and a lineman.

by jack dein on Mar 26, 2010 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah that could be a pouency, allen combo

or something a little less satisfying but still good like Ducasse and Burnett

What I don't understand is

Why people think that we are in a position to trade down. In relation to quarterbacks, surely a team like the browns would either trade up above the Cards (a team that might actually draft a quarterback) or one of the teams behind us. Following our pick is SD, then the Jets, neither of which will take a qb. It would be more logical for another team (the Browns in your example) to trade with them.

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

by aussie_cowboy on Mar 26, 2010 3:08 AM CDT reply actions

You bring up a good point about the teams picking after us taking QB’s. Of the teams that pick between us at 27 and the Browns at 38 only Minnesota, St. Louis if they don’t take Bradford, and Washington could be taking a QB. If Cleveland wanted to hold onto their picks they could wait and see if he makes it to them.

by jack dein on Mar 26, 2010 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I think if a team likes...

Kyle Wilson, Dan Williams, an OLman that might be there, an edge rusher that is there, or a RB that falls; then they could trade up for that as well. There has been lots of speculation that this draft is deep and the boys seem to be at the pivot point between 1st and 2nd round talent.

by Becho on Mar 26, 2010 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

And I voted other:

Golden Tate the Cowboy :)

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

by aussie_cowboy on Mar 26, 2010 3:08 AM CDT reply actions

I picked Iupati

but I would also be perfectly fine with Pouncey at 27. No need to trade back, someone else will snatch him and he would be worth the 27.

I like the trade with Tampa...

Take Nate Allen at #35 and Daryl Washington at #42. Get a couple of O-lineman in the #3rd – 7th round. If a value at OT falls to Dallas then all bets are off.

by DIRE WOLF on Mar 26, 2010 10:43 AM CDT reply actions

daryl washington?

don’t think so, better a O-lineman

by ratware on Mar 26, 2010 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

If there is an O-lineman that's a value at #35 or #42 and can play this year

then draft him. I think the O-lineman that can come in and play now will all be long gone. Both Allen and Washington can play this year and that’s what Dallas needs to happen with the early picks. Get O-lineman in the later rounds and bring them along. A 3rd 4th or 5th should get some O-lineman with raw talent, but not ready for primetime this year.

by DIRE WOLF on Mar 27, 2010 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I voted the trade with Tampa, and we pick:
  1. - C Maurkice Pouncey
  2. - NT Terrence Cody
  3. - FS Morgan Burnett
  4. - WR Jacoby Ford

Will all those guys be there? Who knows. You said “Dream Situation.”

by TCBinNYC on Mar 26, 2010 12:20 PM CDT reply actions

I like the idea of taking a chance on Cody in a trade back

I wouldnt take him in the first and I wouldnt take him as our only 2nd round pick. But if we had two 2nd rounders I feel we are playing with house money and would like to gamble on him.

by TCBinNYC on Mar 30, 2010 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

excelent picks TCB

I would rather have the ILB Spikes or the OT Fox at that 2nd pick tho

by Becho on Mar 26, 2010 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Completely Agree

OL, OL, S w/ the first three picks would be great. Then target BPA at WR, LB, CB, DL w/ the remaining picks.

by Austin15 on Mar 26, 2010 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

That Jacoby Ford pick is wise

dude has decent return skills, and speed

by Becho on Mar 26, 2010 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

the guy has some warts, it could happen but...

why risk it, they should just use their later round picks to move up in the 3rd if he gets there

by Becho on Mar 28, 2010 3:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I see him drop in a lot of drafts but agree with you that it is not likely

but then again the caveate of the post is that it would be the most optimal reasonable situation

by Becho on Mar 26, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Almost picked Iupati

But trading back and picking Pouncey plus getting the 5th rounder is my choice. Then with the 5th rd pick the Cowboys take Walter Thurmond III CB

to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''

by APerfectStar on Mar 27, 2010 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

me too, thought i'd get at least one kyle wilson or dan williams

are you a ND fan? have you seen a lot of Tate?

I would like to see Tate at the top of Rd 2, but I cant see how we would find ourselves in that position. Unless they take him at 27, I doubt he is a cowboy. I like watching highlights of the guy though and would be happy if he somehow became a cowboy, as long as he doesn’t cost a first rounder. Much better prospects and fits will be around earlier than that IMO.

by Becho on Mar 28, 2010 3:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes a ND fan

Though I also doubt he will be a cowboy, I think he is a very underrated prospect who could come in and have an immediate impact on this offence.

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

by aussie_cowboy on Mar 29, 2010 4:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Package Bennett and #27 to move up to #21 with Cincy or #19 with ATL

…since both want/need a young athletic TE like Bennett.

Get Anthony Davis (if you believe in Free as the long term replacement for Flo) or Bruce Campbell (if you don’t) and protect Romo from the blitzes that are sure to come in future seasons.

"Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can't play football worth a damn."
