Is there some competitive advantage...

…to waiting until the last minute to announce Tenders?

….or do they do this just to wear out my eyes and F5 button?

God, I’m already in football withdrawals…..

+1 why must Jerry demand an audience

most teams revealed the tender days ago and here we are after the deadline sitting on eggshells!!!That Jerry !!!!players better be scared and be nervous about your roster spot!!!Roy Williams no you don`t need to worry or perform your job is safe.

You're actuall stting on eggshells about this? Really?

…and for the record, Jerry didn’t actually say the Roy didn’t have to perform…

these Jerry comments

both on the article
After the Minnesota game, we weren’t close enough and good enough for anybody to get comfortable about where we are," Jones said. “We’ve got to do something to change that. Again, we feel good about the system we’re in right now and have got some guys under contract. But it wouldn’t surprise me to have 10 or 11 new faces on our team.”

Jerry Jones expects to see 10 or 11 new faces in a contributing role in 2010.

When asked if the changes he mentioned could impact Roy Williams’ role as a starting wide receiver, the Cowboys owner answered with, "a big no.

“I’m optimistic about Roy Williams,‘’ Jones continued. "We’ve got to do some things to help Roy, to help his game. We’ve got to do some things with the way we get him the ball to enhance his game.

ok , so if I`m understanding Jerry correct he`s saying we weren’t close enough and good enough for anybody to get comfortable about where we are but that does not include Roy Williams because When asked if the changes he mentioned could impact Roy Williams’ role as a starting wide receiver, the Cowboys owner answered with, "a big no.

by ziggy19 on Mar 4, 2010 3:51 PM CST up reply actions

I read that same article you did...

…but after listening to a few radio shows…Jerry’s comments were taken a bit out of context…he thinks Roy is the starting WR…he needs to say that otherwise it would be an indictment of his scouting department (there is an issue here, but it would be stupid to air that in the public when it should be handled internally…), but his other comment confirms that playing time is up for grabs and Roy needs to improve. In other words, Wade’s comments about the best player playing is accurate…even if Roy runs out of the tunnel and is introduced, doesn’t mean that he will get more snaps than Crayton or Ogletree…in fact, near the end of the season, didn’t we see a lot more of Crayton in key situations…forget about the titles…what’s important is playing time…

Always remember, sports news people are always looking for the juicy soundbite that fits the story they have made up their minds they want to write…actual intent of the speaker is actually secondary…

by CaliFanInTx on Mar 4, 2010 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

my beef

is take the kid gloves off with Roy and stop koddling him, instead Jerry talks tough about Ogletree who`s done nothing but work his butt off and Roy gets the royal treatment to go with his 9 million salary for slacking off. but no hard feelings on any comments you made toward me and I was exageratting the eggshell comment but that`s the life of a Cowboy fan as Jerry seems to enjoy leaving us in the dark.

by ziggy19 on Mar 4, 2010 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

Well, as fans we want the perfect script...for all players we draft or bring in to do what we expect...

real world says this doesn’t always happen. No team is perfect in all their assessments. The best anyone can hope for is that you get many more “right” than you get “wrong”. Lately, we have. Our cap/budget is in good shape. As a team we are improving and have a legitimate shot at contending…

Although, I wouldn’t mind the organization “calling out” Roy in public, I know that the correct approach is to handle this in house. I have no doubt that Roy has felt the wrath of the staff, look at the humble comments he has made near the end of the season. He knows what he score is, and he knows he has only himself to blame. The good news is that since he’s been with the Cowboys, all reports show that he has demonstrated the will to work hard towards improving. Best thing is that he isn’t a “cancer” like T.O. I can give guys like this a chance…my patience runs thin for the A-holes.

Exactly

He’s definitely not worth $8 million. Rolle’s ok but is he really that much better than Ken Hamlin? Hamlin seems overpaid at $5.5 million next year I don’t see how paying Rolle $7 or $8 million makes that situation any better.

Bring in a young guy and prep them for the job asap.

And yes, that includes Austin.

Hopefully, a few will get some offers and we get a boatload of 2nd Rounders.

Of course he is. There’s plenty of talent still on the roster, even if he left. And at a 1st & 3rd, I’d say deal.

except we would be left with Williams and Crayton starting and unless the team that signed Austin was picking in the top 10 we wouldn’t even get the best WR in this draft. Austin beat the Chiefs by himself.

by jack dein on Mar 4, 2010 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

To be fair

Last year they were left with just Williams and Crayton too. He’s a wide receiver, yes he’s the best one the Cowboys have and yes I want him back too…but he’s just a wide receiver, those can be replaced. There’s always Boldin, Marshall, or picking a WR in the draft.

by Omar Little on Mar 5, 2010 2:35 AM CST up reply actions

Which WR on the roster....

has the skillset that similar to Austin’s?

They let go of Owens because they had high hopes on Austin, but if you look up and down the roster, there isn’t another guy that has been developed enough that I would think is even close Austin’s potential.

I don't remember everyone saying that about TO

In fact it was fairly split between whether or not Dallas was better without him. I don’t think you’d see an even split about losing Austin.

to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''

by APerfectStar on Mar 4, 2010 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

I was very confident Austin would explode last year; there is no one primed to that again.

I was also very tired of the queeny drama coming from TO’s orbit, he had to go just so I didn’t have to hear it. I’m to the point where I want Dallas to ditch Crayton just because he mentions TO

Miles Austin is 8 years away from a HOF career; if he goes uninjured he has a great chance; his size, speed and strength lend themselves to him having a dominating career, and the way he plays WR, not essentially relying on his jets, he has a chance to last

by AustonianAggie on Mar 4, 2010 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

HOF?

He just had one 1000 yard season, lets not get too crazy here. I mean, that’s saying quite a bit.

by Omar Little on Mar 5, 2010 2:37 AM CST up reply actions

It's pretty easy to say that everone wants to keep Austin, but not at any cost.?

Does anybody really know what he and his agent are asking for in compensation? He’s had one good year…can anyone remember what we did with Hamlin? How do we all feel about that right now? In order to be a god organization you gotta have steely balls sometimes. Here’s what I feel comfortable saying right now…Jerry is not cheap and is prepared to pay Austin well…Jerry wants to keep Austin…Austin wants to stay a Cowboy…Austin will stay if both sides are reasonable and the agent is mindful of his clients desires (…remember Burnett?). Throwing the Franchise tag on Austin, which would necessitate paying him in excess of 9 Million is a bit much.

by CaliFanInTx on Mar 4, 2010 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

I think that it would be difficult to...

immediatly replace Austin.

Even if you look at bad ass rookies, most don’t step in and become #1 WR’s right away.

John McClain: Welcome to the party, pal!

by The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB on Mar 4, 2010 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Don't even kid...

…Jerry screwing away the receiver that should be our premier wideout for the next 6-7 years would be one of the most very trying tests of my fan-ship in the Cowboys. Not that I’ve ever wavered, but I swear to you that would shake the foundations.

by KaceOFbass on Mar 4, 2010 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

?

We finally get quality WR production from a guy we groomed, instead of someone else’s leftovers and you want to let him fly? Austin is better than any WR in this draft and w/o him, our offense was terrible.

Not exactly what I said...

but, if he were to be offered an obscene amount of cash, then getting a 1st & 3rd would be good compensation.

I think all WRs are overrated and ALL can be replaced…rather easily. Way too many options out there in FA to get your panties in a wad.

My comment is that there is not a single player on our list that is irreplaceable.

Good to see someone has it, HIGH FIVE!!!!

by Omar Little on Mar 5, 2010 2:38 AM CST up reply actions

Thats only if you believe

Romo is a top 3 qb in this league and can make any #1 wr look great. I love me some Romo, but I’m not ready to go there yet.

Or if you believe Roy can handle that duty. Which I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don’t.

Personally, I thought Austin played great last year. He aggresively went after balls, he showed after the catch skills that few receivers can match, and with a line that protects Romo better, he could be a monster deep threat too. On top of that, he has the right attitude, which with the wrs we ve on this roster (roy, crayton)…I’d like to keep him around.

I’l admit I’m usually with you in the wr category – that wrs are for the most part replaceable (I think the same of rbs) and a good qb will make most wrs look good enough, but I don’t think Austin is one of them, especially considerng the rest of our offensive talent.

by foyesboys on Mar 4, 2010 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

I don't (Romo)...

but I can’t help but think about Philthy and their dearth of WRs, until recently.

And why would players like t.o., Marshall, Boldin, et al be available if that wasn’t the case?

And how can you explain Austin, Welker, Colston, Crayton, etc? Undrafted/low pick guys that are highly productive.

Simply, it’s just not that big of a deal. The obscene money required by the superstars seldom seem worth the affect on the salary cap. I’d be fine going with Ogletree, Manny Johnson, & a UDFA/low pick as a replacement and not look back.

Mercy...

…I’d be the very, very opposite of fine with that scenario.

by KaceOFbass on Mar 5, 2010 12:57 AM CST up reply actions

Romo is the real deal...

He doesn’t have to be the best QB to ever play, but there is little doubt that he is one of the top QB’s playing today. I don’t know about ranking, but I don’t put too many QB’s ahead of him. He meets the eyeball test, win/loss, and has the stats. We can win with him, we just need other players to step up, afterall, this is a team sport…

by CaliFanInTx on Mar 4, 2010 6:59 PM CST up reply actions

It think you are right.

Get the offensive line in order and the rest will take care of its self. With a dominating line and our cadre of running backs, recievers should not be the main feature of our offense anyway. We need one posession reciever (Witten/Crayton), one intermediate (Ogletree/Williams) and draft a deep threat or retain Austin at a reasonable price. The whole thing depends on the Offensive line. I have said it before and I will shout it from the rooftops. This team goes as far as the offensive line takes them.

Interesting news,

San Diego has let NT Jamal Williams go.

Think Wade would like his old NT to backup the Rat?

He missed most of last year due to injury and doesn’t seem the player he once was (though his 08 was solid) but there’s no doubt he’d be a better backup than Junior Siavii. Williams age and recent injury history will keep his price from blowing out.

Would the 33 year old Williams be happy to be a part of a rotation to be with a contender and back under Wade for whom he had his best years?

I think this could happen.

by ratware on Mar 4, 2010 6:37 PM CST up reply actions

This is proof positive of the demand for OL and DL

even mediocre ones. Cory Proctor gets a 2nd round tender. It’s crazy, but if he hit the market, he would have multiple visits.

Because OL are scarce. It’s why there are FIVE UFA OL this year.

Think about that FIVE. And every one is 31 or older.

This is why there’s gonna be a run on OTs early, IMO.

But it also sets up the possibility of player-for-player trades.

Nobody is gonna flip picks before the draft, unless a top talent is going the other way. OTOH, if there’s no cap, why not KEEP ASSETS?

Cory Proctor isn’t worth much, but he still has value. He could be a throw in a multi-player deal, if GMs are willing to get creative.

THAT’S what I want to see. Are we suddenly going to see lots of one-for-one or two-for two trades?

possible tenders are a 1rst rd / 1rst and a 3rd / 2nd / original rd drafted don`t think there is a 4th rd tender or even a 3rd rd tender so giving Hurd (undrafted) a 2nd rd tender is the lowest tender we could give him and receive compensation if he gets a offer from another team…he won`t…the 2nd rd tender means his salary next yr will be 1.7 million next yr so in my opinion he`s well paid for his production though that salary is not guaranteed as he needs to make the team but the Cowboy`s history on rfa`s it`s pretty good odds for Hurd to stick.

Not certain about the 4,

but I know for a fact that there is a 3, because Oakland gave it to Kirk Morrison.

Scratch that,

that was an original round tender. It would appear you are correct. That sucks.

OAK is whacked out

Morrison is a really good player and he gets that, but they slap a 1st and 3rd on their nickel CB.

2 is the lowest they could tender and still get a return on any undrafted player.

Right

that’s the whole point of these tenders.

They’re short-term, one year, in a year where there’s no cap, so you can go a bit high on your own guys and keep them in house.

The FA pool tonight is gonna be thin. Real, real thin.

Quick question

If a team gives a player a 1st and 3rd round tender and a team signs him to an offer sheet but doesn’t have a 1st or 3rd how does that work.

I believe the NFL refuses to accept the contract

by AustonianAggie on Mar 4, 2010 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

in some instances where a team doesn’t have a 3rd or such and such, a trade may be worked out instead of a RFA deal

well again, they can work out a trade involving other draft picks – The Wes Welker Trade from Miami to NE started as a RFA deal, and turned in to a trade

by illcowboy on Mar 4, 2010 5:07 PM CST reply actions

Doesn't mean he's got a roster spot

I’m with ya bro. Dude needs to be upgraded.

Just because a player is given a tender does not mean he’s got a spot. In fact, the ’Boys can rescind the offer at any time.

He has no other value as a RFA other than trade bait. Poor bait, but bait nonetheless.

Right

these guys are assets. Maybe they’re the equivalent of “2s” in Stratego, but if you have OL and they’re scarce as heck, why give them away?

Don’t think player for picks. think player for player. Think NBA or MLB style. A Proctor could be a throw in that gets you a decent player in a multi-player deal.

7 extra 2nd Round Picks
1 each in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th.

Just the 2 – 1sts & 7 – 2nds makes me as giddy as a schoolgirl.

So risky Fighter.

Don’t you think there is any value to continuity? A really young team would take at least two years to get up to speed. Sure they then would be potentially great, but so risky. And with that monster stadium to fill??

by alanTdot. on Mar 4, 2010 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

the way I see it

The Boys must want someone to bite on Spears and won`t match, if no one matches they probably trade Bowen or Hatcher rights for less than what is tendered. If Spears is gone they must have some sort of plan in place, like move Ratliff to End and draft a NT or draft a DE early like Odrick or maybe they think Siavii can be a DE.

by ziggy19 on Mar 4, 2010 7:32 PM CST reply actions

I don't like the message

Other teams are releasing their non-producers but we tender guys like Spears, Proctor and McQuistan.

by JimmyJohnson on Mar 4, 2010 8:36 PM CST reply actions

Do you know that it is strickly based on their performance?

What about their ages? What about their contracts? No team is releasing their Restricted agents, the guys you just named are restricted, they have value and what does the tender cost matter in an uncapped year? Dallas is not signing the guys you mentioned to a multi-year extension, that to me would be a sign of rewarding a player. Most players do not want to be tendered or franchised because it is a one year deal. So the message you have is not correct.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

by cowboy78 on Mar 4, 2010 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Its not really fair to list Spears in this group

He was a mojor reason why our run defense was so good last year. The guy is a beast when it comes to stopping the run. I am not so sure a 2nd round pick is enough for him, unless it is in the top of the 2nd. Spears gets a bad rap because he was drafted in the 1st round and he was a Parcell’s guy, but if you look at the other guys drafted behind him, Spears was not a bad pick at all.

by Dare2Dream on Mar 5, 2010 7:26 AM CST up reply actions

Spears

With that 2nd round tender they can see his market value and decide to match or get the draft pick.
