A Fool's Mock
Here's what I'd like to see happen with Dallas' Draft this year!
Round 1. Maurkice Pouncey C/G Florida
Maybe too early to pick him in some people's eyes. But I love his potential. Versitile, and could have an immediate impact for either Guard spot or Center if someone goes down to injury. Our lineman arent getting any younger.
Round 2. Nate Allen S USF
Great Range and excels in Zone Coverages. Ballhawk that we need at the safety position. Reliable tackler and a Safety version of Mike Jenkins in terms of playmaking ability. Though not the fastest athlete, he makes up for it with amazing instinct
Round 3. Selvish Capers OT West Virginia (6'5 308)
I'd like Free to eventually be our LT and I expect Flo to be there one more year. So for our possible solution at a future RT, I liked Capers. Being a former tight end, he has great athleticism. Very good run-blocker and is considered one of the fastest OT in this years draft at getting to the second level. Has good stregth but struggles with leverage against bull rushers in pass protection. Capers has the tools to be a starting RT for the future cowboys.
Round 4. Joshua Moore CB Kansas State (5'11 185)
A very aggresive player, sometimes too aggresive and gets fooled by play-action and double moves. With that said Moore is good in run support and has great speed to turn and run with recievers. Not the greatest tackler technique wise but finds ways to slow down or stop ballcarriers.
Round 6. Freddie Barnes WR Bowling Green (6' 212)
Not sure if he'll drop this far but who knows. Very reliable reciever with great hands and crisp route running. Questionable speed (4.6 40yd) but knows hows to play football.
Round 7.
Leigh Tiffin K Alabama
Not to enthused with our current kicking situation. As long as Buehler keeps racking up the touchbacks and can contribute in special teams coverage, i'm fine with having 2 kickers on the roster.
And my steal from this years class! drum roll please!................
Kyle Williams WR Arizona State (5'10 186)
A little hometown bias but still. A little undersized but a very Productive player. 3 1/2 years of playing experience for ASU. Great reciever and can help our special teams(Led Pac 10 in PR avg junior year). Always seemed to make the big play when needed. Potential future slot reciever, can challege ogletree for spot. And I was shocked to see him as an undrafted prospect.

Tiffin can't kick a 40 yarder =\
No leg at all, and I don’t think the Cowboys are going to draft a kicker, they seem set that Buehler will be their kicker by hiring a coach just for him

Funny Tiffin hit a 53 and 55 yarder this season.
He just can not kick off.
Yeah being an Arkansas fan
I remember Tiffin completely blowing a game against the Razorbacks when he missed 2 chip shot field goals and an extra point all in overtime. That was a few years ago though so maybe that horrible game is behind him.
Great mock, howbout!
The first two picks would be my exact picks as well. I dont think we would be taking Pouncey too early. He would go in the next 5 picks if we didnt take him, so that’s not too early. It’s not a sexy position, but this is how great teams are built. You take the best ballplayer available when you draft, and I think he will be the BPA, and will NOT be a reach. Some of these Tackles will bust, but typically the top rated interior lineman (1a, 1b with Iupati) do not.
Nate Allen should fix our secondary. And I would hope that he shows enough that Ken Hamlin could be told to hit the bricks.
Capers is a decent prospect and about as good as we could expect in the 3rd round. I wouldnt mind this pick at all. We have our interior guy, now need an outside guy to compete with the incumbents, Free and maybe Brewster.
Not familiar with Moore, but the position is right. I dont know Kyle Williams either, but if he can return kicks and punts at a decent clip, he’ll make this team. Good overall job on this draft.
Capers, really
c’mon guys, he doesn’t fit our o-line profile, he’s not strong at the poa, he’s not going to move anybody off the ball, he’s only an average pass blocker, he had a horrible week at he senior bowl, he really only fits in a zone-blocking scheme, and I’ll wager he’s not drafted until at least the 4th probably the 5th and by a team that runs a zbs.
He’s not a right tackle, and trust me you don’t want this guy protecting Romo’s blindside, Graham made him look like a turnstyle, NFL rushers will reduce his pass blocking to yelling at Romo to lookout. And again he’s not a good run blocker.
Like the idea, the player not so much, not so much at all.

Love the first 3 picks
Just what the doctor ordered. If it fell that way come draft day(s), I’d be extremely pleased. Well done.
Epic Fail since 1985
Great mock
maybe draft Kyle Williams in the 7th instead of the kicker, as I said earlier, the plan seems to be Beuhler and they have Connor Hughes there as well, I doubt the spend a pick when they could grab one as a UDFA.
by nicholas.rodriguez on Mar 9, 2010 2:38 PM CST reply actions
agreed
I had forgotten about Hughes.

Broadus a long time NFL scout that lives in Dallas said
that if a top O-lineman or top saftety doesn’t fall to them, they will more than likely take an ILB or CB. He said Campbell and Mays are not 1st rounders to them, but Earl Thomas is and would love to have Nate Allen in the 2nd. He also said Dallas has 23 players as first round value and don’t be shocked if Jerry trades down.
I wouldnt mind a trade down
.. if thats where the value is. I think its possible all our 1st rounders are gone by 27, so then we should trade down. Not sure if anyone reported it here, but Peter King is saying someone will trade into the 20-30 range for Colt McCoy. If that’s true, I would gladly trade back with the Redskins or Bills, and take their 2nd and 3rd rounder.
I’m a little surprised Campbell isnt in their 1st round grades, but really glad Mays isnt in there. I’m shocked at all the fans wanting him when he has the same skill set/problems as Roy Williams. Didnt we learn anything from having him?
Peter King thinks that the Rams
should draft one of the DTs with the 1st pick and will have to move up to get McCoy in the mid to late 1st. I don’t what team will need a QB after #20.
Looking at picks 20 through to 32...
I don’t see anyone that would draft a QB.
If Washington don’t take a QB at #4 they may want to try and jump in front of the Rams at pick #33 and grabe McCoy.
Oakland #39, Seattle #41 (if they don’t take QB in the first) and Buffalo #41 are slight possibility’s as a trade up for a QB as well.
Overall I think our chances of finding a good trade down are slim.
I put McCoy at maybe the 3rd besr QB in the draft.
Bradford, Clausen, McCoy and Skelton 3 and 3a. Not a strong draft at QB on paper.
Another Trade Down
I think you are right on about someone wanting to trade back into the 1st to grab Colt. Jerry has done that before w/ Cle and Buffalo, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he did it again.
I don't even see McCoy as a 2nd rounder.
I question whether he’ll have any success at the next level.

- John McKay, the first coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Well Tex likes him in the 1st.
You might check with him. He has a history with QBs.
KICK ASS every day!!!
LMAO
If Tex likes you and you’re a qb not from Cowboys past, i.e. Staubach, that’s not good news. Drew Henson anybody?
by The Triplets on Mar 12, 2010 3:49 AM CST up reply actions
Agree 5Blings
I don’t see him getting drafted before the 4th round and IMO even that’s a reach.
by The Triplets on Mar 12, 2010 3:46 AM CST up reply actions
Hey Dire
That’s really interesting. And thank goodness neither Campbell or Mays are 1st rounders to us. Do you have any feel for who our scouts have pegged as the top linemen? I assume that they must have only two safeties with first round grades then Berry and Thomas?
by The Triplets on Mar 12, 2010 3:30 AM CST up reply actions
That would be about right now that the first round is one night.
I can see all of us waiting around for that 27th pick and then Jerry trading down and all of us getting pissed. Even if its practical we’d probably still complain.
Nate Allen with the 59th? Really?
Ok, I made a mock a little while ago in which I picked Allen with the 1st pick, so I’ll of course defend my pick and this is my reasoning.
It’s all backed up by last year’s draft.
Not Safeties were selected in the 1st Round? True.
But how many were selected in the 2nd Round? Try 8. And 6 of them were selected before the 59th pick, Sherrod Martin was selected with that pick, BTW.
Now, let’s play a game, we will start with the boards from both years, separating the CBs that some teams could look at as Safeties, the FSs and the SSs.
In 2009 we had:
Delmas, FS. (The Cowboys REALLY liked him)
Chung, SS/FS.
Byrd, FS/CB. (CB in College with no top speed, played FS with the Bills last year)
Mitchell, SS.
McBath, FS. (The Cowboys also liked him)
William Moore, SS. (Roy “Thong” Williams clone?)
Sherrod Martin, FS/CB. (I liked him)
Sean Smith, CB/FS.
Now, in 2010 we have:
Eric Berry, FS/CB.
Earl Thomas, FS/CB.
Taylor Mays, SS/OLB.
Chad Jones, SS.
Nate Allen, FS.
Morgan Burnett, FS.
Major Wright, FS.
Jerome Murphy, CB/FS.
Chris Cook, CB/FS.
If we were to compare each player against each other, how would they rank in groups?
Berry and Thomas at the top as the only true 1st Round valued players? Ok.
And outside of that? Would a player like Allen be considered a lesser prospect than a player like McBath or Moore? I don’t think so, I can actually compare his level of play with the one of Delmas and Chung and they were selected at the top of the 2nd, back to back.
That’s why I think that if the Cowboys want to take their choice from the DBs, they should do so with their 1st pick. The teams boards in 2009 means that the value of players that can cover in the backfield is going up and that kind of thing doesn’t tend to change.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
You cant really compare positions like that, Chandus
Some years its a great crop of Cornerbacks and terrible for Outside Linebackers. Other years its great for Offensive Tackles, but there are no Quarterbacks. You can’t just say that since 8 Safeties got picked in the first two rounds last year, that will happen again. Teams do draft for need, but not at the expense of quality. And that’s especially true in the first two rounds. If Berry and Thomas are gone when we’re on the clock at #27, you cant reach for Allen.
If Allen is really your guy and you have to have him, trade back from #27 to #40. He’ll be there and you can pick up another pick for extra depth. Reaching for players really hurts your team in the long run because you are not maximizing your value.
I dont know if Nate Allen will be there at #59. But if he’s not I would feel comfortable with Burnett as they look like very similar players to me. Allen gets more publicity, for sure. But if Berry and Thomas are gone, I think they can get a competent safety in the 2nd.
I can't?
Teams work on scenarios in preparation for the Draft, they take what they see and know about the other teams boards and the mix them with their own to prepare the lists of 1st Round prospects, 2nd Round prospect, etc…
If a team rates and Drafts a player like Sherrod Martin with the 59th pick, and plays well, it means that a prospect like him in the end had value for the position.
The same happens in every position, how do you think that teams started reaching and reaching for OTs in the Draft? Teams know that they will start to take them earlier and earlier.
I think that the same will happen with Safeties, especially when the Draft isn’t deep, or heavy in talent at the top, in the CB position, which is the case of this and the previous Draft.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
As a counter-argument...
In 2008, only one safety was taken in the 1st and only one in the 2nd.
I just hope we don’t lock into one position and draft out of desperation. I would rather see them go OL in the first, but if the value isn’t there, they should draft for another position of need or try to trade down.
If the Cowboys have 23 players they grade as top prospects, there is a reasonable chance that one will make it to 27.
by doomsdayreturns on Mar 9, 2010 9:38 PM CST up reply actions
The problem is that among the 23 players...
… There will be players that won’t fit a need, like a RB, QB or CB that I can see falling… I just can’t see players that the Cowboys need, because several teams could also use them… I’m of course talking about any of the 1st Round Tackles, Iupati and Thomas.
And about your argument, true, but that was a talented Draft at CB, 10 CBs went in the first 2 Rounds!
As far as I know, teams still need DBs, if the talent is in the Safety position, teams will take Safeties ahead of CBs, that’s why this season will have a Safety selected higher than any CB.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!

agree with taking bpa or trading down. However, I think a lot of safeties will be snatched up quite fast like Chandus hints. Look at how much the Giants shelled out for Antrel Rolle. Look at the interest generated by Bethea, Atogwe, Sensabaugh, as restricted free agents. Safeties are in demand my man, and that means we’re probably going to have to go need over value at some point, although I think need and value may meet at pick 59 in the form of Chris Cook CB/FS out of UVA.
by The Triplets on Mar 12, 2010 3:44 AM CST up reply actions
What I have a problem with
is your assertion that because 7 safeties were selectd before the 59th pick in last year’s draft that the same number will occur in this years draft. At least that’s what I think you are saying above.
If that’s the case, I’m saying you cant grade the positions out the same every year. If its stronger in Corners than Safeties, more corners will go. The inverse would hold true as well.
Chandus I think you're right that Allen won't be there at 59
However, I think that the Boys really like Cook and he’ll be there at 59, but ya I really doubt Allen will be there at 59.
by The Triplets on Mar 12, 2010 3:33 AM CST up reply actions
Some good picks Pouncey, Allen, Barnes, Moore
But a couple are doubtful to be available where you slotted them, Allen won’t be there at #59, and it’s doubtful Barnes would make it to the 6th rd. Even Moore might climb higher than Dallas’ 4th rd pick.
Capers is a bad fit for Dallas, especially at RT, as he’s a finesse blocker. He was just awful during Senior Bowl week.
No DL help?
to make the jump to the next level, Odrick said today he needs to work on one area. "Just being more violent overall,'' Odrick said. "Play the game and play it right, violently.''
Three things I look for in any Cowboys Mock
1. Playmaking talent for the secondary
2. Multiple O-line positions
3. A Return Man
and not necessarily in that order. Your mock fits the bill.
by One.Cool.Customer on Mar 9, 2010 5:39 PM CST reply actions
We certainly see eye to eye on those three needs.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Aside from a little wishful thinking, which I think we're all guilty of when we
make a mock, I like your mock aside from one pick. Your pick of Selvish Capers. That guy for one does not fit the profile our o-lineman for one, he really lacks strength and the ability to drive his man off the ball—not to mention he’s only average in pass protection. Two, he won’t be taken before the 5th round and personally I don’t think he’ll get drafted by a team that doesn’t run a zone-blocking-scheme.
good mock
Love the focus on OL (Pouncey is slated as late first early 2nd so not a reach there imo) in the premium rounds and getting a ball hawk S in the 2nd; only suggestion would be to substitute Calloway T Iowa for Capers since 3rd round seems a little high for him.
