Yeah, you’ve been going non-stop. Caught the podcast on the train on the way to work this morning, by the way. Good stuff. And just to bust your chops a little, I liked how every phone call began like this…

You – “Hello? Hello? Hello?”

Caller – “Hello?”

At the same time – “Hello?”

You – “What’s your name and where are you calling from?”

Caller – “Hello? Can you hear me?”

You – “Yes, we can hear here you. What’s your name and where are you calling from?”

Caller – “Oh yeah, hey this is Dave from Utica.”

(5 second pause)

You – “OK Dave, what’s your question?”

by JimmyK on Apr 23, 2010 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, chop busting accepted

Blog Talk Radio does not let you play with the board before the show. I had to do it on the fly.

Started to get the hang of timing the calls, but I had one guy who called in three times and every time I clicked him on he was listening to anothe radio show in the background. Never found out who he was.

We should have it down by camp. Really want to go daily in the summer.

Haha, just playing, Raf. Way back in the day I was a Radio/TV/Film major in college, so I know how hard it is.

by JimmyK on Apr 23, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

The funniest part was

Everybody spent half the air time, not talking about the Cowboys, but talking about how great you guys are. Which, to clarify, Itotally agree with. It was just funny, It’s times like this i’ll remember when you guys are all rich and famous on espn radio :D

You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more

by markdamack on Apr 23, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe a nugget of advice…. On the Dan Lebatard show down here they totally dump any call that starts with a “pleasantry” (ex. How are you? Hows it going?)

IT makes the question come quicker and makes the show flow a lot smoother. Id encourage the callers to get straight to the question. IT gets old hearing “how are you doing?” 30 times in an hour.

Dawk, how are you feeling about the draft so far? The whole NFC East just got a bit better, esp. Eagles and Pokes :)

I hope we find a way to trade up and steal a quality O-Lineman … we can mail in the rest if we’re able to find a decent O-Lineman in the 2nd

Try not to get into a pissing match with a skunk :)

by DalaiLuke on Apr 23, 2010 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Meh… I like Graham, and he fits a big need. We simply didn’t put enough pressure on the QB last year, and I think that made the CB’s look bad, so I like the pick. But the cost was high. I’m really hoping the Eagles trade out of 37 to the 2nd half of the 2nd and recoup a 3 in the process… Or maybe even straight up for a 1 next year. There are a lot of guys I like heading into round 2 right now, but none that particularly stand out as must-have prospects.

Bryant is clearly as talented as they come as far as WR prospects, and the perceived character issues don’t bother me as much as they bother others, but if I were a Cowboys fan, I’d much rather have drafted an offensive linemen. But with the way the first round shook out, they probably made the right pick with what was available.

The Redskins pretty did what they should have.

The Giants – Oof. I don’t know. I keep reading people that love the pick, but a situational pass rusher… at 15… that only played one year of college ball, and didn’t really light it up. Eh. Time will tell.

by JimmyK on Apr 23, 2010 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Which Offensive Lineman

Would you have drafted at 27 or even 24? I think the probable candiates Dallas was hoping to fall at that point—I’m guessing that’s Iupati, Pouncey and Bulaga—were gone.

Do you reach at OL, or take a super-talent at WR?

by kindablue on Apr 23, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No question Dallas made the right move

He was the BPA, and had been for 10+ picks.

Earl Thomas was my A+ scenario.
Dez Bryant was my A scenario.

I’ll take an A any day of the week.

by TCBinNYC on Apr 23, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

by JimmyK on Apr 23, 2010 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

"I’d much rather have drafted an offensive linemen (sic)"

I guess you were implying, although you didn’t specifically say so, that you were referring to what you believed Dallas should have done going into the draft, rather than the way it turned out. That wasn’t entirely clear to me—it sounded like you were contradicting yourself: Dallas did bad, but Dallas did good.

But I would still disagree with that comment. With the exception of blue chip left tackles, very good offensive linemen can be found outside the first round. Most of us Dallas fans knew full well the blue chippers would be gone by the time we came on the clock, so it was a matter of going for the best value, and not getting target fixation on offensive linemen. Reaching there would have been completely counterproductive.

by kindablue on Apr 23, 2010 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

He was playing with words...

he couldn’t actually say it was a good pick and leave it at that. Otherwise he wouldn’t be able to go back to his own blog

by cow_fanatic on Apr 23, 2010 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Dallas did bad, but Dallas did good.

I would instead say… “Dallas did good with the hand it was dealt.”

With the exception of blue chip left tackles, very good offensive linemen can be found outside the first round.

That’s pretty much true of any position, but obviously the talent that goes off the board early has the much, much higher % of being good NFL players.

My wish

We get a safety n the second – Allen/Burnett or even Mays if he slips that far. And then we take 2 OL in the 4th – Tony Washington and JD Walton if they’re available.

by Sean N on Apr 23, 2010 1:22 PM CDT reply actions

Wow, now that's a great scenario, Sean!

I think its certainly possible to get Burnett at #59 and Washington at #125. But I dont think there is any way possible Walton falls all the way to #119.

by TCBinNYC on Apr 23, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Wish away

I wonder if we could get OG Jon Asamoah at #59, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (can play FS as well as CB) at #119 and Tony Washington at #125. Add this to Dez Bryant and I cant imagine a draft going any better.

by TCBinNYC on Apr 23, 2010 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

This is why I love the Dez pick

huge matchup problems for any defense in the league now. Even as mediocre as RW has been, I’ll take him against a safety, LB or 3rd CB. And there are still several players who can come in and contribute in this draft. Either one of the scenarios above would make this an A+ draft in my opinion.

by TK19 on Apr 23, 2010 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

We cover our needs and get an explosive player. I’d be giddy if we could pull something like that off. Add maybe NT depth or a kicker with the 6th and 7th and it’d be a hell of a draft.

by Sean N on Apr 23, 2010 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Now if we can keep the defense out of the backfield long enough to let Romo get rid of the ball!

and open a hole for the running backs. Pick ain’t much good if Romo can’t stay upright. That being said, I guess we really had no real chance of getting a top tackle. Hope he and Miles hit it off, and he just doesn’t become just another diva WR. Everyone says he’s a great talent, I hope it translates to the NFL.

Ok, lets look on this....I was not satisfied with this pick when I was watching draft live yesterdey...(in slovakia 4 hours at monrning :D )

…yes, I wanted even Kyle Wilson, Jarred Odrick….or move up for Bulaga…but when I am reading comments now, Bryant si huge addition…

If we picked Wilson, we could have a little better secondary….if we picked WIlliams or Odrick, we just could improve our outstanding pass rush….

but now, with Bryant and Austin…..which WR should get a double cover? yeah, that is a problem for our rivals….and wait what…..you are covering austin and bryant with safeties…..but witten is free in the middle…ok, cover him too even with rest of LBs, but…then….how you can stop felix or tashard??? yeah, I like it :D

so we can still today pick Safety, or bring Atogwe…or upgrade or OL depth…CB depth ..even new ILB…there is still a lot of gifted guys..but no more bryants…..

just one serious problem….we just really need upgrade OL, because if romo doesnt get his time…….

before there was law, there were the Cowboys!!!

My favorite

This was the plan all along. Jerry pays Primetime to get Dez kicked out of school so he falls to them

Expect BSPN to follow-up on that one

All the fun comments aside...

I love the pic OCC! Once a Cowboy, always a Cowboy Dez!

Wow, 13...

Jimmy Clausen must have really been an asshead during his interviews.

I think he is 2nd round talent.

WOW!!!

Talk about NAILING IT … Gosselin projected 29 of the first 32 players picked???

That is simply amazing, especially given the propensity of teams to pull an Oakland / Denver / Quincey :)

Try not to get into a pissing match with a skunk :)

good point.

That is money. Dez Bryant Top 10!!

by Wmillion on Apr 23, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

What's even more amazing

is that he got all 29 of the first 29 picks in the first round. Not in the right spot, but his top 29 all went by th e29th pick. The 3 he missed were his last 3 picks: Clausen, Saffold and Price.

by TCBinNYC on Apr 23, 2010 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I personally hope we trade up AGAIN

Let’s give up Hurd / Crayton to move up to get Taylor Mays, S, USC, Nate Allen, S, South Florida. These guys will be gone by our pick. Also use both 4ths on OL.

by torchindefenses on Apr 23, 2010 2:31 PM CDT reply actions

Hurd/Crayton have no value

Not sure you could even get a 7th for Crayton, and Hurd could not get a pick in return.

Best line I've heard today.

Speaking of San Fran drafting Davis and Iupati…

“Now Alex Smith will have an extra second and a half to throw a pick…”

Great post

Nice to hear that other folks think our skill players are as good as I do. I mean seriously, we’re 3 deep at rb, 3 deep at te and 5 deep at wr. Just gotta give Romo time to survey the field….come on Vlad at 59!

I hated Campbell in the 1st

But I kinda like him in the 2nd if he falls to us by some chance.

by JimmyJohnson on Apr 23, 2010 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

I'm actively hoping for Campbell in the second.

Dez Bryant and Campbell in the first two rounds would make for a damned good draft in my mind regardless of what comes after.

I just heard Galloway say

that the Cowboys don’t have a remaining O-lineman rated as 2nd round value. I’m thinking he got his info from Broddus

In an interview Willie was ask if he was thinking about retiring. He paused for a moment, smiled and replied " I play music and golf, which one do you think I need to give up"?

hopefully, we can trade some players for more picks

I was hoping to come away w/ at least 2 OL, a DL, an ILB, and a S. We do have 5 picks still but something tells me they won’t be at these 5 positions.

by MicThaRock on Apr 23, 2010 3:42 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

The weird thing about the Bryant pick for me

is that now I am hoping more than ever that Roy Williams gets his head out of his ass, and really starts to perform again.

Because if he performs at the level he did during his time in Detroit and Bryant becomes the player he’s expected to, we could be looking at the greatest receiving corps of all time with Austin/Williams/Bryant and Witten at tight end. And I don’t think I’m exaggerating in the slightest about that. If Williams and Bryant both play like the players they are capable of being, there is not a defense around that could stop that passing attack.

by Arson55 on Apr 23, 2010 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

Dallas has taken a WR in the first round two years in a row.

RW last year and Dez this year. Looks like the best they can do is one out of two. Dez is boom or bust. A bust will set this team back a few years.

In an interview Willie was ask if he was thinking about retiring. He paused for a moment, smiled and replied " I play music and golf, which one do you think I need to give up"?

Haynesworth supposedly back to Titans

We have a bigger need at O-Line

Alan Ball was fine at FS last year. The players who would instantly upgrade the FS position were drafted in the 1st. We can’t be absolutely certain about Free at LT. And we can be certain that if either Tackle goes down, we don’t have anybody who can step in.

by JimmyJohnson on Apr 23, 2010 4:07 PM CDT reply actions

problem with Ball at FS

is that we’d need a 4th corner now

Almost missed this gem. I read the WAS and PHI sites last night for reactions, then I had to go rinse the filth out of my eyes.

DEN and CIN blogs awesome, but maybe the best was the misery inflicted on the BAL fans. Priceless.
