Free at Left Tackle isn’t a "WIN NOW" Move

The reason I state “WIN NOW” is because it seems as though the organization has been in the position for some time now to elevate its standards and expectations from everyone on the team. Sound great, but why aren’t we doing that for Doug Free…anymore?

Remember everyone; we haven’t had two successful back-to-back seasons for quite some time now. Letting Free and Colombo slide into their positions isn’t good for business, and last time I checked, our Cowboys were in the business of winning.

Now by no means am I saying “Doug Free cannot play Left Tackle.” Hey he did fairly decent against Jared Allen in the playoff loss in Minnesota, considering: he was playing Right Tackle and has been practicing that position all season, oh and how would you do if all of a sudden you’re asked to strap up and take on a Pro Bowler in the middle of a divisional playoff game? Good Times…

Let’s be honest, Last Thursday we were all in the position to see Colombo, Adams and Free compete to play in the 2010 season. Doesn’t anyone else think a three man race for the tackle positions would’ve been best for our team? We all KNOW Free can play right tackle and everyone at Valley Ranch has been raving over Free’s productivity in “open space” and I’m sure his potential is unquestioned. But why are we being complacent with the areas that we’re trying to bulk up and excel at?

Picture this: “Free, Colombo and Gaither to compete for Offensive tackle positions.” What part says complacency here? Everyone do some research, Baltimore has stated they want a 2nd rounder for Gaither (need to get rid of him or they’re going to be forced to pay high O-Tackle money for both he and Oher). I’ve seen A LOT of mocks say we pick up Ducasse in the second anyway. Value picks anyone?

I think we need to pick up the pace and really make moves in this draft, even if it means moving up. Gaither is there to shore up or at least improve the depth at one position. At this point, sell me on a round house package to swing up and catch Earl Thomas if you ask me.
