Thinking out loud: Free, Mays and McNabb's trade.

Free talk: LT or RT?

2402169_bin_medium

A little while ago Rafael wrote an article about the RT position in preparation for the Draft (here) were he placed a description of the desired skills of the prospects that the Cowboys like in the position:

A big man who uses his size to muscle and engulf defenders. More quick than fast. Very aggressive.  Does not anyone push him around.

Dallas looks upon RT as more of a power position than LT.  They want their prospects to have many of the same qualities as the tackle guarding the blind side.  He has to be agile enough to cut off edge rushers, but the team is willing to sacrifice a little bit of speed for power.  They expect their RTs to excel in the run game.

This means that when you look at prospects, read for those who get labeled as being "heavy handed" or having "good pop on the punchout."

Do you think that such a description fits Doug Free?

He's just as quick as he's fast. Isn't big enough to engulf. Isn't very aggressive because he isn't that strong. Can get himself pushed around because he can move, he isn't an anchor (which is good, for a LT). He's better in pass protection than in the run game.

So, if you're a proponent of keeping him in the right side because he looked good in there, what do you really mean? Fitting in a player in a position in which he really doesn't fit in?

Look at Marc Colombo, a healthy Colombo, his description fits perfectly what the Cowboys want in it's RT, mobile enough to block in the 2nd level, aggressive, big and powerfulenough to engulf... That isn't Free, Free is a better fit in the left side and the Cowboys are betting that he's, my money is with them.

Obviously, he isn't Flo, a Flo that was just as powerful as he was mobile earlier in his career and that could run block like a RT on the left side even late in his career, but players like Flo are rare.

Mays, the 1st Round rated PROSPECT.

Taylormays6a_medium

Again, a little while ago Rafael told us that one of his sources said to him that Taylor Mays was rated as a 1st Round prospect and such a comment was received with fond memories of the not so distant past when one of the oh-not-so-liked Roy Williamses that tried to cover one half of the field...

We know that Wade Phillips likes to use a cover-4 scheme in certain passing situations, a scheme that looks "kind of" like this (yeah, I know that the Cowboys don't run a 4-3 but I'm being lazy and not willing to edit the image):

Cover4_medium

In such a scheme each of the safeties are asked to cover their half of the field and need good hips and quick read and react qualities to be any good (which is why Sensabaugh looked better than Hamlin).

We know that Mays isn't that kind of prospect, so? Him rated as a 1st Round prospect makes sense to you? It does, if you like Stephen Hodge, the College S moving to ILB prospect.

Stiff hips? Check. Choppy backpedal? Check. Aggressive? Check. Fast? Check. Good tackler? Check. Good zone coverage? Check. Better than good in run support? Check. A playmaker? Check.

Mays is obviously a much more talented prospect, though, and he has enough size to make the move and the work ethic to add more pounds in his frame. So, is he rated as a 1st Round ILB?

McNabb's trade: improving the BEast.

That's what I know, the trade improves both teams, McNabb is an inmediate improvement over Campbell and the Eagles in return receive opportunities to add new blood on a team in need of talent in a lot of positions.

Reid is a branch of Holmgren and Holmgren is a branch of Walsh and Seifert. Shanahan is a former student of Seifert. And as such their schemes are related. McNabb is capable of being much more than effective in such a scheme and he takes care of the ball. The Skins also have talent, McNabb inmediatelly makes Moss and Cooley the dangerous players that they should be. They're lacking along the OLine, but Shanahan is known for getting good results from average OLineman.

In Philly, the people in charge is confident that Kolb is ready and the guy looks like it, he may take more risks with the ball but that has a lot to do with his confidence on his touch and he's better in that department than McNabb. And they also have a lot of question marks, the interior OLineman aren't a strength outside of Herremans, Cole needs a bookend, Brown is gone, Bradley's returning from a knee injury and the other LBs are average and Mikell needs a better alternative starting right next to him. They needed the extra picks, now they need to pick the right players.

I'm all for a better BEast, it improves the entertainment and gives us more bragging right if our team kicks their ahems!

I agree on Free...

better fitting the left tackle spot than the right tackle profile for the Boys. Not sure if Mays can be an ILB…he’s a gifted athlete, but it’s a new skill set to be uncovered and have to take on and shed linemen blocks, plus he’d have to bulk up a decent amount…

The McNabb trade makes the Redskins somewhere closer to an 8-8 team…definite improvement over check down Campbell. The scarier side for me is…what if Kolb is GOOD? Combine that with their arsenal of draft picks in this deep draft, it’s scary.

I have noticed a new resurgence in Cowboy hating in 2007, which can only mean one thing- We're back.

yea

if Kolb can play solid football and get the ball out quickly and accurately (like Romo when he started kind of), they will be back. If they hit on a couple of these draft picks in the back 7 and along the OL, it will only take a couple years for them to recover that near-dynasty status they had in the 2000s.

I agree

if Kolb is what the Eagles FO and us fans want/expect him to be, our offense shouldn’t miss a stride. Our defense is the side of the ball that worries me most this year.

On the other hand, we don’t know much about Kolb, especially under the duress of a long season. He might not pan out, in which case we start from scratch and have a long road to go

True, but the only position in which I can easily see a rookie starter is FS… OLine? ILB? DL? CB? WR? It’s just harder see a new starter in those positions, even if a position like WR has such question marks… So a draftee that’s headed to those position is going to have time to adjust and develop.

Ish, No, and Yeah

Ish..

Jerry described Doug Free as “Left tackle-ish” in a recent interview. I happen to agree with him. Free did pretty well on the right side this year, but Colombo was obviously that extra dose of size, strength, and aggression that the right tackle position requires. Either way, if Free plays right and they have a rookie LT or McQuistan or Brewster they’re in trouble. Colombo provides experience and stability, baring injury of course. Going young is a good thing. Getting cut happy on a playoff team probably won’t be.

No…

I am an avid USC fan…and, no. Taylor Mays is a very skilled athlete, but he will not be an effective ILB any time soon. He lacks the size and play style. I think he would be a serious improvement over Ken Hamlin in ball skills and coverage. However he would still be a downgrade (at this size) in run support even playing the FS position. At ILB in a 3-4 he wouldn’t be effective enough. As a FS, I still like Earl Thomas a lot more due to his play style.

Yeah..

I am very worried about McNabb and Philly. McNabb will have a chip on his shoulder this season, and if Snyder and Shannahan can get a decent O-Line going (one of Mike’s strong suits) I think they could be dangerous. McNabb still will suffer from the same old inaccuracy at the wrong times;but, more often than not he still has really solid play against our boys.

That being said… we say this every year about Washington and I’m beginning to avoid the off-season cheese. It’s really common for them to make moves for aging veterans and end up with the parts being worth more than the sum. McNabb has had some very talented receivers in his time with Philly. This group in Washington is not nearly as skilled as the ones he’s left and I’m intrigued to see how that shakes out. But, get an O-line and some receivers and they could certainly be yet another hurdle to the post-season.

The Eagles will be young, explosive, and jaw dropping. Kolb appears to be the real deal, they have excellent players at the skill positions. But they will be young, explosive, and jaw dropping in a negative sense as well. I see some moments of real domination mixed in with a Melt-down or two. It happens every year in the NFL (2007 Cowboys v. Patriots) that the young flashy squad really holds its own and looks competitive. Then eventually gets worn down by the experience of their opponents. That’s how I see Philly this season.. predictions….

I know I'm in the minority

but if we stay at 27 and Mays is still there, I wouldn’t mind picking him up. I honestly don’t think he’s as bad as most people feel he is in coverage. Whenever I see him getting beat in the highlights he’s usually the single high safety. I don’t think we would be asking him to do that much, since obviously he’s not the ball-hawking center-field type like a Berry or Thomas.

As far as the comparisons to Roy Williams, I don’t really see what the problem with that is. Young Roy Williams was awesome and pretty much all Cowboys fans loved him. He was a perfect compliment to the Darren Woodson. It wasn’t until Woodson retired and Roy started to lose his speed that he got seriously exposed in coverage. I also think that once Roy got his 2nd contract that he lost his love of football. Sleeping in a giant pile of money every night can have that effect on people.

Right now we have linebackers and a safety in Sensabaugh that can keep up with RB’s and TE’s, so I like the idea of having a fast, athletic guy roaming around trying to knock the crap out of somebody. And hell, you never know what could happen with Mays. What happens if he puts it all together? He could end up being the next Adrian Wilson if we can unlock the potential in him.

I said it before and I'll say it again...

If Mays and Thomas aren’t there then trade down. I don’t see any of the players there being worth the 27th pick, with the possible exception of Maurkice Pouncey. Trade down and get a player we want where he is valued and add another draft pick too.

Tony Romo off in dat hole, Watch roll and watch him throw, Watch him lead dem cowboys to the super bowl, now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys!
