Quote by #11 that Makes Me Queasy

From the DMN a couple days ago...I haven't seen it discussed on BTB as of yet -

Star-divide

On what advice he’d give those fans that are worried about how the quartet of Cowboys receivers is going to coexist

“Just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. That’s what you do as a fan. Good things come to those who wait. I waited in Detroit. I waited in Detroit for four or five years, and then finally got my little…I hit the lottery. I’m not saying money wise, but I got on a good football team where I can finally enjoy the playoffs, and know what the playoffs are all about. Miles had a really good year, hopefully he’ll have another really good one – that’s when his payday will come. Maybe it will come this year during the season. So you know, sit back, relax and watch us in the stands and let us players do their jobs.”

I'm not sure wtf Roy was thinking with this quote. It doesn't even come close to answering the question. And most glaringly, it certainly does appear like he is just talking about and concerned about money. Hey tries to explain away his "lottery" comment by claiming it was about going from Detroit to Dallas (which is plausible), but then follows that up by saying quite explicitly that Miles Austin will strike it rich this season. Roy seems to think that the Cowboys receivers can only "coexist" if they are making big(ger) bucks. I just can't believe his general outlook on playing football. It seems completely out-of-whack with how real leaders and real performers should be.

Every RW quote makes me quesy.

Listening to RW “Anyone who can come in here and take my spot is a bad man” vs Dez “I was just excited he (Romo) was talking to me” is sickening. You would think the brand new rookie would have the immature demeanor compared to a “seasoned vet”, but it is apparently opposite day at Valley Ranch… I didn’t get the memo.

If those quotes were swapped

You’d still bash Roy for not focusing and praise Dez for being so competitive.

I’m kind of neutral about Roy, I don’t love him and right now I don’t hate him, but he do anything right in some peoples’ eyes.

by Key19 on May 18, 2010 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be worse

Roy could of compared how good he and Romo are on the same page right now as to that of Montana to Rice…Oh, wait….he did…

I’m sure Romo heard that quote and shook his head in disbelief. That’s an odd quote coming from any of our WRs, not just Roy…Why go and say you’re clicking as good as the best duo in history? Why go out and say anything?

by JLMax09 on May 18, 2010 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

I doubt very much that Romo would shake his head at that quote considering he would appreciate the confidence RW has in him.

Also, nowhere in that quote did Roy guarantee production like Montana and Rice. All he said is that the two were finally clicking and used maybe the most in tune QB-WR combo to hammer that point home. You are definitely overanalyzing the quote.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on May 18, 2010 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's the quote

"You know, last year around this time we were throwing and catching and it wasn’t very good. Just to be quite honest with you, we were missing balls, and bad throws and drops and all that in the offseason that carried over to the season. But this year, we’re connecting like Montana and Rice. It’s night and day from last year so I know we’re expecting big things for both of us."

It just seems really unnecessary. It’s time Roy just stops talking, produces, then talks all he wants! I like hearing Roy talk, he throws out some good stuff once and a while. But it is time to just step up and DO, then talk. Last year he was talking too and nothing ever materialized.

Yeah but its the offseason.

At this point all he really can do is talk. Obviously the season will tell us the true tale of how this offseason goes, but to get all upset about confidence in the offseason seems to be much ado about nothing.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Maybe he meant

(Hanna) Montana and (Condolezza) Rice?

At least he wasn’t bragging they’d be connecting like (Jamarcus) Russell and Heyward-Bey…even Roy can’t fleece a team like those two.

by Left Coast Cowboy on May 18, 2010 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, Roy should probably refrain from talking too much

Statements like that can come back and bite him.

I know I'm very much in the minority

…….but I just have a hunch that RW is going to have a pretty darned good year. It might be a pipe dream, or at least wishful thinking, but he DOES have some talent and everyone is saying he looks much improved, so, who knows. Maybe we’ll get at least one decent season out of him.

"I just wrote the check, it's up to you guys to cash it!" - Jimmy Johnson to defense after failed attempt on 4th down deep inside Cowboy territory. AND THEY DID!!!!

I agree 100%

I believe he is going to have a solid year, and that by the end it will be difficult to say who is the number (because both he and Austin will be solid). And with Ogletree and Dez picking up any slack, I am feeling good about our WR corp. Still worried a little about the O-line though.

Roy has unbelievable talent

he just needs to put it together, which I really hope he does as well

by JLMax09 on May 18, 2010 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I may be a tad optimistic, too, but he could just pull it together this season.

Marty B, too. You never know. Both these guys want to prove that last season was an anomaly.

Trust them...they know what they're doing.

Sho 'Nuff

I will be more than happy if he produces well this season, and it does look like he has been working smarter. The talking is a bit much for this early in the year, though.
Did you see the look on Jerry’s face after RW caught the pass that did not need to be bobbled in the first place?
Nice Tag, btw, love the quote.

Someone knock me unconcious until August. No, September, preseason only makes it worse.

Some of the most

active threads at the moment are about Roy and it’s all because he’s so loose with his quotes. He seems to be politicking. He starts off in each interview session by being team first and positive, but then has to slip in something in each interview about “being the man” or “it’ll take a bad man to displace me” or “I was wide eyed as a rookie too”.

I’d love it if the only news coming out about Roy was about how good his hands and route running look.

Then again, that doesn’t even really matter until he does it in a game.

We’re getting bombarded by news about a guy who is irrelevant until he goes out and plays well when it matters.

meaningless quote turned into an attack on Williams.

Getting interviewed this time of year=lip service and paragraph fillers for the journalists. You’re not going to hear any earth-shattering comments in May. You’re going to hear optimistic and competitive psych-babble and Roy’s delivering.

Roy is Roy

he’s a weird bird, and everything he says kind of has to be put thru this filter or it’s easy to interpret it in the worst way. I’m a big critic of his play but I don’t get bothered by what he says.

But listen to this whole interview, it really doesn’t sound that bad overall, he just says some kooky things sometimes, and doesn’t think about how they will be interpreted.

I think as fans we have to try not to overreact to it (the media do a fine job of that for us), take whatever he says with a few grains of salt and just wait to see what he produces on the field.

by scottmaui on May 19, 2010 12:14 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe he should take his ball and go home, like Crayton.

In my opinion, I want guys to be confident and feel like they are great players. If you don’t think you are improving, why are you wasting time at camp? So Roy has confidence in himself and in his connection with Romo. He didn’t say that Dez couldn’t beat him out, just that he would take a great effort to do so. I think that’s pretty true, actually.

Crayton is being quiet right now, but his absence says 10 times more than anything coming out of Roy’s mouth. At least he’s there and working with the team.

What do you think Miles would say if they started asking him about the possibility of Dez taking his spot?

by Baked Potato Soup on May 20, 2010 9:42 AM CDT reply actions

What he's already been saying.

He’s an improvement to the team and the more targets Romo has the better….

of course the diff between Roy and Miles

is that no one is asking Miles about Dez taking his spot lol… because it’s not a question for him, but it is a legitimate question for Roy

by scottmaui on May 20, 2010 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Austin would probably just laugh and maybe shake his head.

Austin has been a backup for awhile. He’s used to it. I doubt he’d get nearly as butt-hurt about it as Williams would. He also tends to toe the company line more than Williams. He’d likely make one of the, “if it makes the team better then fine”, line of responses.

Then he’d probably go out and tear it up on the field to erase any doubt.

Go watch some of the Miles Austin interviews on YouTube. He’s a very modest and easy going guy who truly appreciates the opportunities he’s had.

Williams didn't seem too hurt to me.

He made a comment that it would take a baaaad man to take his job. He didn’t say it couldn’t be done, he didn’t slam anyone else, he just implied that he’s going to fight for it. Personally, I like to hear that.

If he does it, great.

But I want Roy to fight him for it every step of the way, not just roll over and die. Whether he’s the starter or the #4, this team is better if Roy is playing well.

by Baked Potato Soup on May 21, 2010 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Crayton is on the trade block

If Roy were on the trade block he wouldn’t be at voluntary OTA’s either. That’s common practice for any player in that position.

Crayton put himself on the block, didn't he?

As soon as they drafted Dez, didn’t his agent request permission to seek a trade?

by Baked Potato Soup on May 20, 2010 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought the Cowboys initiated it

The report I’m basing that on stated he was only being offered to select teams during day 2 or 3 of the draft. Then afterwards, he and his agent asked if they could seek a trade to a team on their own and the Cowboys said ok.

Maybe.

I honestly don’t know, and depending on the “insider,” these types of stories seem to change a lot. I know that Wade said that he wanted him there and that he wasn’t there, though.

There's no comparison between Austin and Williams

not in any way shape or form…Ok, they are both carbon-based life forms.

by DavidH22 on May 20, 2010 2:08 PM CDT reply actions

While I think Miles is much better than Roy at this moment based off of last season

keep in mind that they each have one 1300+ yard season in their career, they are both big receivers, and up until week five of last season they were both being criticized for making key gaffes in the areas of route-running and drops (Miles had a pretty bad game in Denver if you remember).

Roy has a much longer record than Austin has, and that record is largely one of underachieving

I don't disagree

but it is important to keep some perspective on the whole thing. The hyperbole pointed toward Roy is a little much in my opinion and I really think that if Roy can get the mental side of the game down (which he acknowledges is going much better this spring) that he can be a very good #2 receiver. I would base my opinion off the fact that if you look at Roy’s season last year that there were several games where he performed at a good level and even in the games he didn’t it seemed as if his problems were fixable (drops and timing in my opinion fall under that category). Call me an optimist, but I could easily see a 900 yard season for him this year (that averages out to around 57 yards per game if I did that math right in my head).

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on May 20, 2010 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually closer to 56 yards per game

We heard the same stuff last year about how well Roy was working

In addition to that one big season being an obvious career year, I am starting to think that Roy is the king of the workout warriors, a really great practice player who does not produce on game day

Understandable.

I don’t really blame anyone for being down on Roy and asking him to prove it, but my only thing is I think it is a little extreme to criticize the guy like he is Rashaun Woods or something.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

If Jerry had traded a 5th rounder for Roy Williams

then I don’t think any of us would have any problems with #11’s productivity.

by DavidH22 on May 20, 2010 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

Probably not.

Because then JJ and the coaches would be more likely to give him the hook when he isn’t performing well.

Rabid and luvin' it

by lonewolfz28 on May 20, 2010 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with

you but explain to me why that is Roy’s fault? And let’s not for get the money while we’re at it. Here we are, many of us good Americans, pissed at a guy because he got someone to give him a lot of money. Isn’t that what we do in America, or at the very least hope for?

As far as earning the money is concerned a.ka.a. productivity, go back in time to the 2007 playoff game for a minute. To me, that is when all of this started. Crayton was the Number 2 WR to T.O. and late in the third qtr. (1 min 15 secs. left) Crayton had the 2nd worst drop in Cowboy history behind Jackie Smith’s end zone drop in the Super Bowl. Then, with time running out in the same game, Miles pulls up on a pass from Romo which would have been a sure T.D. but he “wasn’t on the same page with Romo.” (A lot of that going around I guess)

We all know what happened. The Giants, a team we had beaten twice that year, win the game and then go on to win the Super Bowl. I submit if either Austin or Crayton makes either of those plays and the Cowboys win, this team woul have never seen Roy Williams and he never would have been paid. But desperate times call for desperate measures and here we all are today.

by jevans1729 on May 20, 2010 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe that

you are right that Crayton was in the slot with Miles on the outside. However, both players pulled up on the route. I believe it was Michael Irvin’s analysis later that indicated the pass/route was intended for Miles.

by jevans1729 on May 21, 2010 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Dream scenario.

Williams somehow pulls another 1,100-yard season out of his arse next year; or more to the point has a season just good enough to convince some other sucker into giving up a 2nd for him in the ’11 offseason.

Never happen, of course. But that’s the best case scenario. Because even if Roy had another quality season next year; he’s just not ever going to be that guy that will give you 1,000 yards year in, year out. He’s simply not in that tier.
