Having seen more of linebacker Sean Lee during OTAs, Keith Brooking sounds convinced of the rookie's potential.
"I've been around him for a few days and I see that he's a very intense player," Brooking said. "He plays the game 100 miles an hour, and that's the way it's supposed to be played. He's very talented. He's an intelligent football player, I think he's picked up the defense fairly easily considering what they've thrown at him in this three-day period.
"He has a lot of room for improvement, but I see that he has a lot of potential as well. When you have that potential and his work ethic, there's a pretty good chance he's going to be a heck of a player in this league."

Yeah baby.
Brooking calling someone else intense? I love it.
When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather -- not screaming like the passengers in his car.
Don’t put that on him. Brooking went to five straight pro bowls. Lee’s a very promising young player. Let’s just leave it at that for now…

I'm not putting anything on him
Just giving my opinion of what I think of him…I think that’s the purpose of these comments…to give opinions

I’m not trying to pick on you. It’s just bothers me when people compare kids who were just drafted, and who haven’t played in a single game, to NFL greats. Why is Lee a younger version of Brooking? Because they’re both white, play linebacker, have stars on their helmet and are intense? Just like some people are saying Dez is the next Michael Irvin. Please. It’s just way too premature to compare these with greatness four weeks post-draft…
by Boundforbeach on May 21, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions
Because they have similar size, attitude, work ethic, and skill set. I think Terry is just saying that he sounds like a young version of Brooking himself. If he lives up to or surpasses that, awesome. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t. I would guess that the coaches and scouts thought the same thing, which is how both guys are here and playing the same position.

Because the Cowboys Compare them
The Cowboys themselves have compared Lee to Brooking.
One of the reasons he was so highly ranked on their board was not merely his skills and tools, but the leadership prowess he demonstrated in college.
Similar linebacker skills, similar intensity, similar leadership potential. That’s why he’s compared to Brooking. Is he going to be a 5 time pro-bowler? Not neccessarily. But I think there’s little doubt that the reason the Cowboys drafted Lee specifically was to continue many of the great qualities that Brooking has brought into this team into the next-generation at ILB.

This is a great point
after seeing what a Keith Brooking could add to the defensive players already in place, I think they did specifically look for that style of player in the draft.
FREE THE OGLETREE!!!
likewise, I don’t think they would have taken Lissemore if not for their admiration of Ratliff.
by speedmetal on May 21, 2010 6:29 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
It would be amazing if he were able to back up the Rat
The defense would really benefit from being to rest Jay periodically.
FREE THE OGLETREE!!!
Correct
He gets compared to Brooking because they really are similar players.

didn't Parcells compare Ware to L.T. when he was drafted??
I remember Parcells saying he often would compare young players to great players he has coached, I think its a common thing to do.
In Romo we Trust
maybe we’re splitting hairs here. I don’t have a problem with comparing a draftees’ set of skill sets, background, or anything else with an existing player. It is, as you point out, pretty common. I do, however, get annoyed when people start annointing a new draft pick as the next [..fill in great players name…]. I think it’s unfair to the kid, and unncessarily raises expectations. For example, I don’t know how many times on this blog since the draft I’ve read comments that say Dez is Michael Irvin. I just find it somewhat ridiculous. That is my only point.
by Boundforbeach on May 21, 2010 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions
I think you take the comment too literally
When I say Lee is a younger Brooking, I don’t mean he’s going to accomplish or be the exact same player in the league, I mean they are very similar as a player.
Who knows, Lee and Dez could end up being better than Brooking or Irvin. But it’s only natural to compare players from different eras.

It reminds me of what I said to a young Aaron Novinger.
Intense writer, lots of potential, and all that jazz.

And when is the last time you saw a
snappy movie reference or hyper-speed image posted from him? I have to ask myself if golf or something is distracting him. I know guys like Raf and Dave are established veteran leaders, but if this blog is going to take that next step, Aaron is going to have to take the reins…

You know, for a while I had been encouraging him to partake in the Blog Groupie action
but now, I don’t know. Maybe that fast Hollywood lifestyle, Grey Goose and late nights at the Ghostbar… Maybe he just wasn’t ready for this kind of fame so early in his blogging career. I blame myself.

soon he'll be seeing Hollywood starlets

Brooking as Mentor
I sincerely hope Brooking takes Lee under his wing. I would love for Lee to become his protege.

Brooking always says the right thing
He said this kinda stuff about Bobby Carpenter last year.
I don't recall him saying Carp was intense.
Smart and a hard-worker maybe, but not “very intense”.

When Lee was drafted I was slightly confused....
until i realized we just picked up a replacement for Carpenter…..then my confusion turned into euphoria.
That's not setting the bar very high.
All he’d need to do to pass Carp would be to grow some long hair, whiff on 90% of tackles, and go to Cabo.

Choice
He’s always in the middle of those bs pre-game huddles.
by Cowboysaficionado on May 22, 2010 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions
Not just the BS pre-game huddle
He helped the team tremendously last year calling players out in practice and helping to keep the players focused on the task at hand. There are so many distractions in Dallas (mostly media generated) that it was great to see someone vocal and respected enough to keep them grounded. I know Brooking will only be around a year or two but I hope someone takes this leadership role from him. IMO this is a critical part of our potential success.
Awesome endorsement.
For Brooking to identify those traits that he represents in a younger player that might eventually replace him . . . priceless.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
maybe i got this wrong
But I thought williams was more of a replacement for brooking and lee is the replacement for james
Don't Panic!!!

You guys may be right.
I don’t really know how that would shake out. maybe his “moral” replacement, as boondog suggests.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
I agree with levcd
Sounded like Lee was going to replace Bradie eventually, while Williams will be playing in Brooking’s spot.
But maybe in 2011, Bradie and Lee will be the starters with Williams as the nickel.

Just read a piece on Austin, complete with interview.
How nice it is to have a player that when asked about money would rather talk about winning a championship. It seems clear now the Cowboys want to see him produce at last year’s level before they pay him. Well, there he is, not bitching about anything. Working hard with the team, working on good faith, skillfully avoiding any rhetorical conversation about money. Way to go, Miles.
When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather -- not screaming like the passengers in his car.
Agreed
Like I said in another thread…he’s a very modest and easy going guy who truly appreciates the opportunities he’s had. He seems happy to just be able to be able to play football in the NFL and push himself to be the best he can be.
He knows Jerry will make sure he’s well compensated as long as he continues to play at a very high level. He’s not going to worry about it. It’s not like he’s playing for the Jags or Bucs with their tightwad owners.
Some good interviews:
