Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

While Bryant's injury is not considered serious, Scandrick's required surgery.

From the DMN:

Scandrick used the word shattered to describe the finger and said it will be three to four weeks before the pin that was inserted will be removed.

"I don't see myself catching any balls until camp starts," said Scandrick, who kept a scheduled appearance at a basketball game to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters on Wednesday, even though he was unable to play.

That is rough

hopefully he’ll be fine by camp. I’m curious who the coaching staff would put in there as the third guy if they had to right now? Ball?

by - Adrian - on May 27, 2010 12:12 AM CDT reply actions

Guess what that means for our FS position.

This is why we need more DB depth. Ball can’t be the #4 CB AND the starting FS.

Otogwe

we should get otogwe and keep ball at 4th corner and back up FS

by Portland's Cowboy fan on May 27, 2010 2:39 AM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't rule it out

we could give him a huge front end deal that winds down near the end of the contract. I.E. a nice signing bonus.

Don’t forget the final 8 rule though, would he be a free agent exception or would we have to lose another player?

by G_SWAG on May 27, 2010 2:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I think we're allowed to sign one FA over 5 mil or whatever the cap is

and we haven’t done that yet. So there shouldn’t be any issue as far as the final eight rule.

by TheAnsah on May 27, 2010 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

If they cut him, he's fair game.

But we’re also allowed to sign one guy to whatever we want.

Dolphins interested in Atogwe
On June 1, St. Louis Rams restricted free agent safety O.J. Atogwe will likely become an unrestricted free agent, as the Rams aren’t expected to tender him at 110 percent of his 2009 salary.

The Rams and Atogwe are still talking, but if they don’t reach a deal that keeps him in St. Louis, one team that could be interested in his services is the Miami Dolphins.

Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel reports that the Dolphins signing Atogwe is a possibility, and that the Dolphins’ front office had interest in Atogwe in 2009, when the Rams kept him in place by slapping the franchise tag on him.

I don't see anyway we go after Atogwe..

First, Atogwe wants to get paid big money. Jerry is scared of giving another safety a big money contract now being burned twice with RW and Hamlin. We are also forgetting Sensabaugh wants a new deal. There is no way Jerry is going to shell out two big money contracts to the same position. Everyone might as well get used to Ball being the starter because it’s going to be him.

you know Jerry is scared?

Jerry is a guy that will go for it all.

Jerry wants him, Jerry gets him.

Ich bin ein Berliner--JFK

by HudBaby on May 27, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I love the people who know what boogeymen are hiding in Jerry's closet.

You mean the same Jerry who didn’t learn enough from getting burnt by the Galloway trade to not make the very same mistake a decade later and trade away half a draft for Roy MF’in Williams?

As for the other Roy and Ken Hamlin, Atogwe has made more big plays by himself than the two of those guys combined so that comparison stinks. Also I’d say Atogwe has a lot more left in the tank than Darren Sharper had a year ago and we all saw how much of a cog he was in the Saints run to the Super Bowl.

I don’t see Jerry giving Atogwe a colossal contract but the Cowboys have been pretty silent during the offseason thus far but I don’t put anything past Jerry.

by MadMick on May 28, 2010 5:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Let me clean up the last sentence.

Personally, I don’t believe Jerry will go all in for Atogwe. It could very well be that Jerry likes what his staff has told him about Ball and Mike Hamlin that he’ll stand pat with those guys.

However, if Jerry really believes he’s a certain piece away, he’ll aggressively pursue that player.

by MadMick on May 28, 2010 5:41 AM CDT up reply actions

You remind me of this one character....

Who used to always stifle even the tiniest hint that Jerry might draft a wide receiver high. He was apparently reassured of this time and time again because Jerry would rather get proven receivers through trades and free agency. Whatever happened to him? Did he die of shock?

Strangely enough, you’re that guy’s warped mirror image because your disdain for dumb old boring safeties rivals his disapproval of drafting unpredictable flaky bust-o-matic wide receivers.

You’re both wrong.

by MadMick on May 29, 2010 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

The lack of a 4th corner is a big reason I hope somebody (Hamlin or AOA) beats out Ball for the starting FS position.

I like Ball as a player, but I think he is perfect as a backup FS and 4th corner. Having someone step up at FS or seeing us sign Atogwe (at a reasonable price of course) would certainly help out our CB depth since I don’t have much faith in Wall or Gordon to be reliable nickel corners in case of injury.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Hamlin has a good chance

but Akwasi will never be ready that soon, got to give that kid another year or two.

nicely done

classic Stones reference, Tom…

Is playing smart too much to ask?

by silverblue5 on May 27, 2010 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Well

Dez Bryant I think will actually benefit from getting to observe the timing scheme and the veterans. Also, a little extra playbook studying. I think I have almost zero concerns reference what he has physically; hands, speed, leaping ability – the only thing I worry about is him perfecting what’s going on between his ears.

Scandrick I’m not worried about, dude is a player. Likewise I think he needs to work on his technique and could benefit from observation because he does have really immense physical talent; he’s just caught out of position a lot. If he becomes a lockdown third corner and we get a little production out of our FS position the Boys’ defense officially becomes one of the best in the league.

Like Crayton sitting out, this just gives more reps to the hungry players we need to really evaluate – I would love to have Bryan McCann and his 4.28 speed on this roster.

by G_SWAG on May 27, 2010 2:41 AM CDT reply actions

Not to say our defense wasn't already one of the best in the league,

but when I think of an elite game changing Superbowl winning defense the Jets’ is the one that comes to mind.

by G_SWAG on May 27, 2010 2:45 AM CDT up reply actions

This is why we need to keep Crayton.

If one of our receivers misses any significant time, which isnt out of the ordinary, then we would have to call on him. he needs to get his self to OTA’s and get in sync with Romo.

by bval77 on May 27, 2010 4:35 AM CDT reply actions

I agree that we need Crayton

however,

he needs to get his self to OTA’s and get in sync with Romo.

That isn’t really an issue, they both know each other very well. Crayton isn’t really missing out on anything by not attending OTAs.

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

by aussie_cowboy on May 27, 2010 5:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep,

Crayton seems to be a smart guy, capable of figuring out where he needs to be, how to catch, how to run the correct route..unlike some people lol Crayton being gone doesnt bother me too much..I hope it’s giving Roy more time to figure his game out.

by JLMax09 on May 27, 2010 6:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe,

but each of his previous years I beleive he had attended these OTA’s and such so how much of his knowledge of Romo, and Romo of Crayton, was developed during this time. For all we know he could be taking a step back by not participating. Is this certain, no, but it is plausible.

by bval77 on May 27, 2010 6:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Not really
For all we know he could be taking a step back by not participating. Is this certain, no, but it is plausible.

A relationship formed of the back of years of work isn’t going to deteriorate because Crayton doesn’t show up for a few weeks.

The "ouch" reports.

I can’t believe Scandrick used the word “shattered” regarding his finger. That sounds extremely painful.

Kitna must be throwing bullets out there.

Scandrick suffered the injury in OTAs on Tuesday when he broke up a pass from Jon Kitna to Manuel Johnson. Three fingers on his left hand went numb, and he didn’t realize until later in the day when the pain in his index finger increased that something was wrong.

Trust them...they know what they're doing.

by Aaron Novinger on May 27, 2010 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

He should be better by training camp.

Anything said above is purely the opinion of AFB unless said otherwise.

by lonewolfz28 on May 27, 2010 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

my understanding was that his finger wasn't shattered by Kitna's throw so much

than it was by Manny Johnson hitting Scandrick’s hand to knock the ball out.
