Patrick Crayton requests release

DALLAS -- Wide receiver Patrick Crayton, who doesn't believe the Dallas Cowboys plan to keep him on the roster this season, said Friday the team is "messing with people's careers and people's lives" and that he wants to be released immediately.

Crayton, who has not participated in voluntary workouts this offseason, said during an appearance on ESPN 103.3's Ben and Skin Show that he is concerned that the Cowboys will keep him as insurance and cut him after training camp. Crayton wants a chance to join another team as soon as possible, which he said agent Fred Lyles frequently tells the Cowboys.

Ok, Crayton has family to worry about!!!????

Are you kidding me? You make millions of dollars a year, give me a break. This is on par with Latrell Spreewell saying he had mouths to feed a while back when he was making 12 million a year or something. Ridiculous.

by TheAnsah on May 28, 2010 1:42 PM CDT reply actions

there are how many people fighting for spots on the roster?

every single guy should be able to say that. Sounds like he’s just being a crybaby. I understand that it’s your job and it’s the way you make your living, but come on. This happens all the time. I was arguing to keep him this whole time, but now he needs to go, I think.

by Dub_TC on May 28, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, what he said definitely doesn't sound good

but you gotta look at it in his perspective. He has no guaranteed money this year, he only gets paid his game check. So if he gets hurt—he’ll get cut, if he doesn’t perform with us in camp—he’ll get cut. Granted, he signed a 14 million dollar contract a couple years ago, but who knows how he spent the money. He could be hurting, be could just be b*tching like Spree did above. It would probably be best for him to go at this point because he just sounds disgruntled.

by JLMax09 on May 28, 2010 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

if he's hurting for money after 14 mill

it’s his own fault. I don’t feel sorry for him if that happened.

by Dub_TC on May 28, 2010 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

Most people will never earn a million dollars in their LIFETIME, so athletes shouldn’t expect sympathy when they piss away millions and millions of dollars in a couple of years.

by ChrisRichey on May 28, 2010 3:31 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I completely agree about pissing away the money,

all I am saying is that we don’t know his personal story. If we all lost our jobs tomorrow a lot of us would be hurting pretty badly too. All he is saying, is he wants cut in time to latch onto another team and get settled in before the start of the season, it’s what we did with Flo.

by JLMax09 on May 28, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously?

People seriously should look in the mirror before you start taking shots at P.C. A lot of your points of view are always about money. So and So gets paid so much money suck it up. So and So wasn’t drafted and now he should be grateful for what he has. So and So is a big baby. Blah Blah Blah…You guys call yourself fans, but are fickle and are in someways, heartless.

Its about pride. Its about integrity. Its about staying true to yourself. The proof is in the pudding. Name another player who is getting shut out of his position for a guy who has contributed less than him for the past 2 seasons for more money. In the end, they continue to give that guy a shot instead of admitting the mistake, and giving everyone a chance to prove where they stand. Why not prove what the quality of their work is?

That isn’t the case here. Miles has one season under his belt, and now he is being treated like the best WR the cowboys have ever had. Dez Bryant is the second coming of Michael Irvin if you listen to others. Roy and PC are the odd man out in this situation. But reality is, PC isn’t going to get a fair shake. Period. Point Blank. No matter his contribution. No matter his worth.

Now, I need for some of you to go to work, no matter how much money you make (and I make a lot), and are contributing more, but you know your co-worker is being paid more than you. And to boot, people outside of the organization sees it too, they keep you around so that when the other guy still doesn’t pan out, then they’ll keep you (“Just in Case”). You would want to quit and find a new employer just like PC does. Cut the man some slack. He is a man just like some of you.

by FirstnGoal on May 28, 2010 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe it's about honoring your contract????

And life isn’t fair, people get overpaid or underpaid all of the time.

by ChrisRichey on May 28, 2010 3:37 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

He was honoring his contract

but with all the additional draft picks and trades have pushed him into a position where he is going to be cut. When Dallas cuts him will you say Dallas didn’t honor the contract?

by JLMax09 on May 28, 2010 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Pride?

If the guy had any pride he would be doing all he could to better his position instead of bitching and whining. He isn’t be very smart and niether is his agent; do you think this makes him more attractive to other teams?

by bad knees on May 28, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly

it doesn’t make him look good at all. I understand him being stressed and worried, but all he’s doing is making himself look mad or jealous that the Boys drafted Dez.

by Dub_TC on May 28, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Neither is being a 4th or 5th WR on this team

Crayton knows he wont be allowed to compete for Roy’s job. Crayton would be no higher than Roy or Dez, and would be battling Tree for playing time, which would make him about the 6th option in our offense. I wanted Dallas to find a way for him to stay. Do you really think other teams cant look at our situation and go “Why in God’s name is Roy keeping his job?” Teams know he is getting pushed out because 1) Roy’s fat contract and ‘potential’—that he needs to find this year, and 2) because we drafted Dez.

In a perfect world it’d be Miles, Dez, Crayton, Tree right now…but it’s not.

by JLMax09 on May 28, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree with this-

“Miles, Dez, Crayton, Tree " I would put Roy in there performing at the level that was expected of him. You said perfect world that would be much better than anything 31 yr old Crayton can give.

by Jeremiah_24 on May 28, 2010 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, here is my thought process on why I chose that route...perfect is maybe not the best word

If Roy was producing at a 50-60 catch level, we MOST likely, dont get Dez in the draft, because as someone pointed out earlier, it seems like Ogletree is going to be the future slot guy.

So I am thinking ‘perfect’ in more of a terms of Jerry is swallowing his pride and the money/picks he’s put into Roy and allowing a true competition to take place right now in the real world between Crayton and Roy—which is not going to happen based on the money/picks/Jerry’s ego.

by JLMax09 on May 28, 2010 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

My only issue was with his comment about

having familiy to take care of. I can understand his frustration with the rest of it. If this happened to me I would keep working and try to prove them wrong though. Plus I’m pretty sure most of us have way worse stuff to deal with at our jobs.

by TheAnsah on May 28, 2010 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to Stir The Pot

Not to stir the pot any more than I already had. Its still about money. Some of you are talking about a contract. Some of you are talking about how fair life is. Now granted, I’ll afford you the principles of “bitchings and whinning”, but let me be clear (from my perspective), I believe in a lot of his conversations with the media recently, he used the terminology about its a business. Right? Didn’t he?

How about this business. We don’t know how much he has left in the tank. We don’t know what a market there is for a 2-4th receiver type like he is. WEdo know, the longer he is a cowboy but not playing, his marketablility decreases. We do know that just collecting paychex is not good enough for some of us. We do know being appreciated is more motivating than money. The guy got demoted 2xs last season, and over-came them both. Lost the punt return duties, then ran a few back. Then he was moved to the 4th receiver and scored another TD reception.

So if collecting paychex and keeping your mouth shut is a good business strategy as I see some of you are protesting, then you are absolutely right. PC is screwing that up Royally. But if you are sensible like the rare few of us, you see that drafting a stunna like Dez and Over paying/Trading for a guy like Roy….then yes…Crayton has a legitimate gripe and wants out………as my spanish speakers would say……PRONTO!!!!

by FirstnGoal on May 28, 2010 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

It's still all about the money

Crayton is in the last year of his contract and knows his next one will be for a lot less money if he sits on the bench this year.

by ChrisRichey on May 28, 2010 5:32 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

He's signed through 2011

But I completely agree, it’s about the money.

by JLMax09 on May 28, 2010 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Ahhhhh, he is

For some reason I thought they re-worked his deal but it was just an extension.

All that changes is he’s worried about getting cut next year when he’s a year older. Or getting cut now that most teams have their rosters set.

Crayton has run his mouth for YEARS while failing to back it up on the field. He’s a solid, not great, player who looks better than he is due to the talent around him.

by ChrisRichey on May 28, 2010 5:50 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

*or cut later in training camp

I hate editing on this darn iPhone :)

by ChrisRichey on May 28, 2010 5:51 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

That's great and all but

How about Crayton keeping his gripes in house and collecting checks, while trying to make it hard for Dallas to keep him off the field by working hard (like he has in the past). Just because Dez was drafted doesn’t automatically mean they can’t use Crayton this season. I’m sure Dallas wants him to remain with the team if they cannot trade him, just like the situation with Spears.

I’m one of PC’s supporters, but I’m finding it hard to defend him when he runs his mouth and pouts. Jerry has always treated him well. I think he should honor his contract instead of assuming he’s out the door no matter what. Time for him to stop the whining and get to work.

Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Felix Jones = defensive coordinator's Kobayashi Maru scenario

by APerfectStar on May 29, 2010 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I see his point of view.

I think he is correct that the Cowboys are holding onto him as insurance, which is why it’s unlikely that they would release him now. It sucks for him, because if he isn’t going to be here then he wants the opportunity to make an impact on another team, and not attending their training camp is going to limit his opportunities. But, that’s the unfortunate business side of the game. I guess he’s thinking now that if he creates enough waves that they’ll go ahead and release him.

by Baked Potato Soup on May 28, 2010 1:54 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, that seems to be the strategy.

It’s been laid out by many a diva WR before him. And I can understand his issue with being an insurance policy for sure. That one statement just irked me though.

by TheAnsah on May 28, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Desperate move

The Cowboys have been trying to trade this guy and nobody wants him. Crayton’s first and only job is to show himself to be sufficiently valuable that some team with less talent at receiver will pick him up and play him more than the Cowboys will. To achieve that goal, he needed to attend every possible practice, come early, and stay late.

Unfortunately, he decided to skip voluntary practice and wait for the trade. Oops! It didn’t come. Now he’s despearte, and all he can do is make a stink. The ONLY benefit of doing so is that the Cowboys may get so sick of him that they cut him, and some team may sign him if they don’t have to trade anything for him. But make no mistake: if he actually thought he had any real value (enough to trade for, or to compete to be a contributing receiver with the Boys) he would not take this desperation tactic.

This is the end of Crayton’s career. Someone asking to be cut is not brought onto the field under duress, and if he is on the field Romo is not going to throw it to him. (We want no more locker room cancer, and that’s all Crayton is now that he’s asked to be cut.) If his desperation move does pay off, it will only land him with a team willing to pick up an insurance wide receiver (one that they wouldn’t bother to trade for). Crayton’s value in the league appears to be close to zero, and the only question is whether he finds some place to hang around, sit the bench, and pick up a little more money before he retires.

I actually didn’t think his value as a wide receiver was this far gone; like some other fans here, I thought he was still a good enough receiver to start for other teams. But given his level of desperation, it seems that other teams (like the Cowboys) feel that they’d rather spend time/ money on developing young talent than pick up a mediocre 30-year-old.

by boyman on May 28, 2010 2:15 PM CDT reply actions

nail on the head

I agree with everything.

It does sound like a desperate move and unfortunately it came to that. From his perspective he probably didnt have another choice (other than to quietly fall to backup). Seemed they were looking for ways to replace him, but he came back by bad performance of others.

He is definitely good enough to score TDs and be reliable, but not enough that is basically “hindering development”. I’m surprised he hasnt been picked up by some of the teams out there like Carolina/Denver … who also have some young players, but lack depth/leadership.

At this point I am hoping JJ releases him so he does have time to work out with a new team.
Unfortunate, but its the right thing to do. Good luck to him, hope its not for a rival :)

Regarding his “for the family” perspective. I don’t think it was meant to be taken literally like he has trouble putting food on the table … but probably sounded good to him at the time. However he did mention the new home/schools if he movesgetting to know the new team, right?

by fuji1232 on May 28, 2010 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on

What does he want? He should come in and play. The Cowboys released Greg Ellis, Ken Hamlin and Flozell Adams at times that would be best for them to find a new team. Why would they play with him. He has value and they want him on the team. He wants to compete then let him come in but does he really think he is better than Dez.

by objective on May 28, 2010 2:17 PM CDT reply actions

On the possibility of being a 4th or 5th receiver....
“It’d be an uncomfortable situation having guys play in front of you when you know that you’re just as good as them,” Crayton said. “But it’s one of those situations, man. At the end of the day, I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

So does it sound to anybody else that he’s admitting that he’s no better than Dez or KO? Or even some of the other guys vying for his spot?

This after he was quoted, “If it’s a true open competition, I’ll be with the Dallas Cowboys in 2010.”

I think he’s been reading too much BTB. This is the subject of entirely too many fan posts on here.

This shouldn't be terribly surprising to anyone.

The Cowboys should keep doing what they are doing. Keep him on the payroll just in case someone gets injured on our team, or another team suffers an injury that convinces them to trade a draft pick for him. Is it the nicest way of doing business? Not really, but at the end of the day it is what is best for the Cowboys.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Jerry is known for being good to his players

And Crayton should be aware of this. He got well paid a couple of years ago (more than he was worth) but now the Cowboys are messing with his life? Give me a break.

I supported Crayton before this as I think he’s a better WR than Roy, but now I hope he gets what he deserves. The veteran minimum from a non-playoff team sounds about right…

by ChrisRichey on May 28, 2010 3:02 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

No longer do I support keeping him.

Give ’em what he wants, bye bye, good luck in the FA market

Crayton vs #1 & #2 corner: Roy vs #3 & #4 corner

The comparison between Crayton and Williams should be viewed based on their ability to succeed against certain cornerbacks. I believe Crayton would not have consistent success against #1 and #2 corners. Roy would likely be outstanding against #3 and #4 corners. Since there is no salary cap, I’d keep Roy because he’s younger, he’s shown the potential to get high numbers previously and he would beat out Crayton if they were actually competing against the same type of cornerback talent. If there was a salary cap, I might dump both of them because their both overpaid considering the other potential at the wr position.
