Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

First off, I have never said I don't work as hard in practice! Nor would I ever say a thing like that! What I said was that the Pro Bowl wasn't a big factor to me because I've experienced it and I don't have to feel like I have to work as hard to get back there because it's not a big factor! I have always been a hard worker on and off the field!

I'm a team player and everybody that knows me knows that the Pro Bowl is the last thing that I'm worried about! Don't ever judge me and say that I'm not hungry! Because I want a Super Bowl for my organization and my fellow teammates. That is my goal and that's what I'm focused on this year.

Quote me on that.

I love it- I want everybody hungry. Take all slights personal, invent reasons to hate the opponent… these are the things that championship caliber trams must do when the world is telling them they should be in the SB.

Its too bad for Mike that he has to be the latest example of the media

wringing a story out of innocuous comments. What he said (paraphrased) was that the Pro Bowl was no longer a goal he had to work for and that he felt like his job has become easier and that he didn’t have to work as hard. I can understand why the media would jump on that (ESPNDallas has a story titled “Jenkins satisfied after breakout season?”) for a story, but I thought that in context he was simply pointing out how much easier the game is coming to him now. You would especially think the media could gather that much when he later said that he “always want[s] to be the best guy.”

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Jun 16, 2010 4:38 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I think that's the story he's referring to.

Here’s some snippets by MacMahon at ESPNDallas that may have “inspired” Jenkins’ blog:

"I’ve got a Pro Bowl under my belt, so that’s one of the goals I don’t even have to work for," Jenkins said. "I feel like my job right now is easier, so I don’t have to work as hard. I can just go on and ride that roller-coaster and keep playing."

It could be considered worrisome anytime a player, particularly a young one, says he doesn’t have to work as hard.

[snip]

"I thought John Wooden had a great saying: ‘The best thing you learn is after you know it all,’" Campo said, using a bit of wisdom from the recently deceased UCLA basketball coaching legend. "With [Jenkins], it will be a continuous process of learning."

That’s true as long as Jenkins is willing to put in the work.

Jenkins wasn’t pleased that it took a few NFC cornerbacks pulling out of the Pro Bowl for him to get an invitation, but any bitterness about the selection process has long passed. Forget about that as motivational fodder.

Trust them...they know what they're doing.

Taking words out of context is what McMahon does.

I can’t believe I have to talk about this clown again. I left him behind a couple of years ago. What Tim does is make inflammatory remarks, or try to turn the mundane into a scoop. He thinks he gets more hits that way. Unfortunately for him, he fails to realize that everyone goes away eventually except for his fellow haters. He thrives on pissing Cowboy’s fans off. He was probably climaxing in his panties while he was posting that.

Agreed

I couldn’t stand him at DMN and couldn’t believe he got hired with espn.com (showing I guess that his schtick works). I thought Mosley was the same way at DMN, but actually enjoy his stuff on espn.com. Just can’t stand that kind of dishonesty. I remember Stackhouse getting in McMahon’s face about something stupid McMahon posted on his DMN Mavs blog (something about Stack whining over playing time, which he had never publicly done). Hopefully the internet now being saturated with bloggers will discourage that kind of things.

And Calvin Watkins being allowed a job after pubicly ridiculing a head coach during his press conference (Wade) makes me sick. Ugh. Got hired by espn.com too.

Also funny

that when when Cuban caused an uproar a few years ago by not allowing bloggers into the Mavs locker room, it was probably directed at McMahon.

by ManTab on Jun 16, 2010 5:16 PM CDT reply actions

Hold on, don't tell me...

You mean to say Timmy Mac misrepresented a player’s words, added his own soon to them that gave the words a different meaning than the context in which they were said? Noooooooo.

Look, maybe Jenkins wasn’t able to say exactly what he meant, but this isn’t the first time this has happened with this reporter.

Here’s what we don’t know: the questions that were asked in order to get this response, or the followup questions that were asked during the media scrum. I can tell you from experience, thee players don’t just volunteer these thoughts.

Here's the thing...

Look, I don’t want to completely slam Macmahon here, because I don’t think Jenkins is very clear with his point in the first place.

But its not like Jenkins made this one statement, smiled and walked away. There is context here, and a lot of times we don’t get it. What were the questions that spawned this comment? He was asked something about the Pro Bowl, having to work hard, or something like that. Did he say anything else about it? What were the follow up questions.

The problem is that Jenkins’ initial quote isn’t exactly clear in what he’s trying to get across. So now the burden is on the reporter, to either follow up with questions to clarify that statement, or at least try and convey that context.

The problem here is also with the title of the post. Immediately, that title makes readers want to interpret his statement in a certain way. When I read the article yesterday, I thought to myself that this doesn’t sound like Jenkins is saying he doesn’t have to work as hard. To me Jenkins was primarily talking about the Pro Bowl.

MacMahon using those other quotes, and that line about learning more once you know it all, is bullsh***. That right there is the equivalent of putting words into Jenkins’ mouth.

This is why, when I’m getting quotes from a player in the locker room, I do my best to record the questions getting asked as well. The recorders are all in the players’ face, but can barely pick up all the questions. I don’t think that’s the case here, but it is troubling that all this stems from two sentences that Jenkins said, that was part of like 5-10 minutes of talking to the media in the locker room.

I'm with you, BW.

What this type of story does is take away from actual reporting in favor of a more commentary-based column. The tough part is that MacMahon picks, chooses, and uses these quotes from Jenkins to form his own argument tied to the title of his story.

That’s tough on a player when you spend time trying not to blurt out anything damaging in an interview, and like you said, from a 10-15 minute session, the reporter subjectively searches for juicy nuggets to fuel his piece.

Now, remembering back to the DMN, this isn’t uncharacteristic of his style of reporting. Most likely, he is the yin to Watkins’ yang there on that blog. The problem I have is that he questions a player’s work ethic around that player’s quotes—again, out of context. That’s a type of reporting that some feel inclined to do, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.

If it were me, I’d feel bad for posting that, especially now that Jenkins disputes it. Mac shoulda saw that coming when he was sitting at the keyboard though.

Trust them...they know what they're doing.

by Aaron Novinger on Jun 16, 2010 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, you do that because

you want to get it right. I suspect that McMahon got what he wanted (something he could spin into a story that might get him a spot on ESPN radio let’s say) and didn’t want anything that might disrupt the spin he had going.

McMahon

That guy sucks at what he does, unless his job is to suck and in that case he is the best ever. When he was at DMN I constantly berated him on the blog. Not that it did any good, but it made me feel better to be nasty. I know I shouldn’t lower myself, but I just hate what he writes about the Cowboys and their players, especially things about Wade, who I really like, and Roy Williams. (coachable) Everyone can see with their own eyes that RW has not lived up to his contract, talent, etc. TM just needs to try and be as good as Wade or Roy, which I never see happening.

I think it’s great that he immediately crushed any misconception about his work ethic that Timmy Mac’s article caused.

It's kind of hard to believe anyone would give McMahon a word edge-wise

After being banned from the Mavs locker room you’d think the dipshit would learn his lesson, but he feeds on the disdain that others have for him.

Never take audio or hearsay seriously

I don’t take words seriously unless I can see a video to go with it. Having edited audio and stuff before I know how easy it is to chop things up and make it sound worse than it is and take things totally out of context, while making it all sound like it was said all at once instead of being here and there. Video makes that more difficult to do.

Tony Romo off in dat hole, Watch roll and watch him throw, Watch him lead dem cowboys to the super bowl, now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys, Now watch me "yua!" crank dat cowboys!

Macmahon posted another silly blog

Saying Jenkins misinterpreted his words and didn’t get the whole picture. Now take a look at this crap haha

Jenkins’ post indicated that he felt his words were taken out of context, which causes me to question if he actually read what I wrote or just caught wind of the reaction to it on some fan blogs and message boards.

Some fan blog my ass. If he by any chance intended to point at bloggingtheboys, I pitty the fool.

by Cowboysaficionado on Jun 17, 2010 2:31 PM CDT reply actions

I can see where MacMahon is coming from since the second half of the article was pretty decent

but the headline he used was going to guarantee both what Jenkins said and what he wrote was going to get misinterpreted on some level.
