A further of confidence for the LT position

The New Orleans Saints have traded two-time Pro-Bowl left tackle Jamaal Brown to Washington. Adam Schefter reports for ESPN that the the picks are conditional and most likely will result in the teams swapping picks in the third through seventh rounds. Brown is in the last year of his deal, so this amounts to a one-year look.

This could mean a win-win scenario for the Cowboys. Either Jerry thinks the options currently on the team are better than Brown (win for our O); or Jerry's assessment of Brown is that he isn't worth trading down two rounds in next year's draft (win for our D).

Of course it's possible that Jerry's assessment is way off, that  Brown will return to form. It's also possible that Loomis won't deal to Jerry. But this sort of deal used to be Jerry's bread and butter: a one year look-see deal on an elite player coming back from injury. The old Jerry couldn't have passed this one up, which says a lot about this team and its management; and it says a lot about the fans' expectations that a bunch of posts didn't immediately go up that Jerral missed out again.

I'm really perplexed by this

I’m not saying that we should’ve given up what Washington did, but the fact that we weren’t even on the phone with Loomis for a 2-time Pro Bowl OT is just plain idiotic. At LEAST test the freaking waters, Jerry!

His tender was for only $3.6M

So it must be something other than the cost of bringing him in that made Jerry pass. When healthy Brown was a beast, so let’s hope Jerry is right on this one.

More recent reports project Brown to RT

You may get your wish yet, along with Spencer putting out Brown “for hire”.

just looked over the deal; if Brown is healthy the Skins stoled him.

Washington is quickly looking like a force in the NFC East – thats all they needed …..a smart man in Washington.

Whoa...a force?

Getting Brown, even for just 1 year to get Williams feet wet on the right side, is a nice move for them…But a force? They still have NO running backs (unless this is fantasy football 2006?), no one opposite Moss—who has been highly inflated due to his games against us in the past, and missing pieces to get switched to a 3-4. Especially the middle piece—their whiny bitch of a $100 million dollar NT. Dont forget Landry who never lived up to his #6 draft pick. They are going to be a lot better…but not a winning record.

Maybe, but they just gave Mc Nabb a little more time...

who ever runs the ball a bigger crack to get threw, they have some potential at WR, and a decent defence.

+1

They’re quietly putting together a hell of a team up there in D.C. While I don’t think they’ll necessarily be “a force”, I do believe that a lot of people are underestimating them going into the season. I haven’t looked at their schedule in a while, but I wouldn’t be surprised it they were a .500 team this year, or even a game over with an easy schedule.
They’ve made just enough personnel moves to collectively make a big difference, and knowing the Mike Shannahan is orchestrating things and changing the overall mindset of that team, I think they’re going to surprise a lot of people.

Which is going to equate to in between 6 and 8 wins

They are still the 4th best team in this division, unless Philly REALLY struggles, which I don’t see them being worse than 7 wins.

And Washington’s schedule is a bit weaker as was pointed out:

8. Redskins 134-122 .523

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/21479/2010-strength-of-schedule

Which still will include 6 in our division, GB, Indy, @Lions—I have more faith in Detroit this year than Wash, @Tenn, @Jax

Those are some very good offenses—especially rushing attacks that will give a transitioning 3-4 fits. It’s gonna be a tough year for Washington. I am sure McNabb is up to the challenge, but he was getting awfully inaccurate as the year progressed last year, especially at the end of it. Sure I(and others) might be underestimating the Skins—they will be tough—but I think people are OVERestimating McNabb, he’s not the same player that led Philly to all those NFC Championships.

Shanahan is a good coach, but let’s not forget he didn’t do anything without Elway. He didn’t do anything as a coach the last 10 years he was in Denver. They won there 2 Super Bowls and disappeared. And McNabb is not Elway. There’s no Terrell at RB and their defense is no where near what the Broncos had when they were winning it all in the late 90’s. Is Washington better…yes…but let’s remember who was coaching and playing for them last year.

Smart

I’ve always said Trent Williams could be a great right tackle in this league.

It's a lot harder than most people think

Transitioning from cutting defenders knees on the right to cutting defenders knees on the left. Olshansky will be having flashbacks.

I always kinda liked Brown but I know many Saints fans that dont and who think he is slightly

over rated. Throw in the fact he has been hurt alot and wants a big payday, Im not sure he is worth it. Maybe if we didnt sign Barron I would have been more interested.
He also needs to pass his physical. Thats not a given.

Yes Redskins improved, but is that really all that hard to do. Many self appointed draft gurus on here could have improved them. Throw in the fact they are now trading away their next draft(LOL!) SNAFU!!

DMN via Times Pic saying Jerry did show interest.

And NOLA.com is basically a fan blog

Their “reportage” consists of openly rooting for the Saints and subsequently against the Cowboys.

Calvin Watkins is downplaying the whole thing

Calvin’s description of the report (lol@ “if you will”) sounds much more plausible, that Brown was a possibility for the Barron role, not Free’s. So Jerry and Loomis just couldn’t come to the table on this. Draft picks were worth a lot more right before the draft, and Bobby C. was worth a lot less (not that I pretend to know what the specifics of the offers were).
